Mets Chat Room: Church goes on DL Edition

Here’s a surprise. Ryan Church went on the DL this afternoon for a second time with post-concussion symptoms.
I asked Omar last night in Philly if he thought the Church situation would prompt the Mets to treat concussions differently in the future and he said no, that he thought the team handled everything correctly.
Yeah, right.
Nick Evans returns to replace Church.

JUST WHAT THE METS NEEDED, ANOTHER BALL PLAYER PRONE TO INJURY.wILL WE EVER HAVE 9 BALL PLAYERS ABLE TO PLAY TOGETHER FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH.
This is terrible news for both the mets and Ryan Church. I wish him well—he has to be shook up….
Mike: You can’t be serious. The man has a head injury, and we can only assume it has been made worse by the horrible way the Mets handled it.-JD
JD,
Evans is the best choice the mets have in there farm system. What happen to Fernado Martinez?
I’m no doctor and I’m no expert at concussions but I am a huge hockey fan and football fan and have seen players get concussions and witnessed how they were handled by there organizations and knowing church had a second concussion in a span of a few months the man should not have been on a long flight to colorado, never mind playing days later. I don’t care what Minaya thinks or said, it was a terrible decision by the Mets organization, it was handled horribly.
I can’t say I’m surprised. I am appalled at the cavalier way the Mets Managment(?) handled such a serious injury to one of their players.
As a parent, I’m wondering how Ryan’s parents are dealing with this mistreatment of their son. I would hope that the Wilpons – Fred preferably – would have made some contact with them.
However, I doubt it.
Obviously, the Mets mishandled Church, but you don’t know if this is the result of that. Migraines are apparently a typical presentation of post-concussion syndrome. There’s no evidence this has anything to do with playing him after the 2nd concussion (which, again, was obviously a mistake).
hat I do not understand is this: If the Mets knew or had an idea that he had migraines in the past (They should know in their medical file). And he went through not one but two consciouses. Then they should 1) Don’t put him on the plane 2) DL right a way. I am confused why the organization will treat someone with these history so poorly
I’m guessing they went with Evans because he’s two years older than F-Mart and played in more games in the minors. Albeit not a ton more games. That and possibly to reward him for how well he has been hitting since being sent back down.
Maybe F-Mart isn’t ready. It is probably good that our best prospect remains in the minors so he can develop into a good player. There are too many players whose growth is slowed down as they are rushed to the majors.
Anybody want to talk about Barry Bonds? Do you want him, or do you not want him?

Exactly, if he’s as good as he’s supposed to be, let him show it by mastering minor league pitchers first before letting him graduate to the major leagues.
Does Minaya believe he handled it the right way because he genuinely does or to protect himself against a lawsuit?
Dan: I’m not sure Minaya believes, but he obviously won’t admit to doing anything wrong in this. I’m sure the Mets lawyers have briefed him on what to say. But, they’ve screwed this up on so many levels.-JD
Evans was most likely called up because he was already on the 40 man roster and F Mart was not.
John 2 questions on Evans what number is he wearing last time he was up he was # 6 but Trot Nixon has the number.
Also I guess now he does not get to play in the AA all star game. I think being in NY beat that but I wonder what he thinks.
A. Reyes gets his first ML hit.
Always cool to see the ball being taken out of play.
One of the great rituals of baseball.
John – You’ve been very consistent with your position on this (and, dare I say, you are 100% right). That being said, you do seem to being venturing into one too many “told you so’s” territory.
Do you think you may be piling on a bit now? For so many different reasons, some of which you’ve already acknowledged, the Mets can’t officially omit that they bungled Church’s care and put his health at unnecessary risk.
At this point, short of the unrealistic propsoect of a complete legal admission of negligence, what sort of response would satisfy you?
At the very least, I think it’s now clear that they are willing to be as conservative as they have to be to ensure they don’t cause Church further harm.
Excuse the typo—meant to say “offically ADMIT”
Wow…this is really bad. Church’s conditions seems to just keep getting worse.
There is no doubt the mets bungled how they handeled this, but the key issue is whether or not their doing so actually caused Church further harm, or if some of what’s happened was “going to happen” anyways.
If the Mets ever get church and alou healthy there is no doubt they will win the division. Unfortunately that is a big “if”.
The Mets should sweep the Giants, there offense is brutal. The
Mets should win at least 4 out of 6 on this road trip.
Truly amazing the Mets win big and no one has anything to say.
Anyone who thought the Phillies would be inspired by almost beating the Mets last night is sadly mistaken. With Hamels on the mound they were as flat as a pancake and lose 2-0 to the Cards.
I’m nearly ready to let the Mets draw me back in fully. I’m still timid though. Keep it rolling, take care of business these next 5 games and I’ll have one foot back in the door.
I am 100% convinced that they mishandled Church’s injuries to protect Minaya from looking even worse in regards to his moves this winter.
The same reason they used Schneider and Castillo as everyday players for so much longer than you could possibly hope that they’d “turn it around” at the plate.
To try and protect Minaya from looking bad about every move this off-season other than Santana, which fell in his lap.
Mike-
Minaya also stuck with Randolph as manager for too long. Clearly, things have changed dramatically for the better since Randolph’s long overdue removal. I didn’t know much about Jerry Manuel before his hiring, but I like his style, the things he has to say, and more importantly, so it seems, does his team.
I don’t think anybody should go ga ga over the Mets. They have alot of flaws starting w/corner OFs who eventually will fall back to earth.
But since the division is so weak they might just be able to get away w/it if Pelf etal can pitch like this.
As for Church, the Mets messed up. But since there is nothing else negative to talk about w/the team right now, it sounds like you are just beating a dead horse and piling on JD.
Wow. 4 in a row for our Metsies. Game and a 1/2 out of first place. I am loving it. In Poughkeepsie on vacation and going to the stadium (Shea) tomorrow.
Checking in to take the mood of the blog and there really isn’t one. Nothing about the game last night. Was there a technical problem?
Just don’t understand how it seems the better they do there is less blogging going on? I am just trying to figure that out in socialogical terms and can’t come up with something.
Just maybe that being negative and losing are more conducive to blogging? Don’t know but it is kind of interesting.
Love the way, most people, including me, are like a jilted lover, with the Mets. You want to try love again but are just too afraid of being hurt again. Wow!!!
Pelfrey is really turning into something, huh?
Later gators!!!
On a different note, BigPelf has turned into one of the leaders in the rotation.
He has the 2nd most 7 inning games on the staff – after Santana – and has won 5 straight. I am not saying he is the second best pitcher on the staff, but right now he is a reliable pitcher which is more than you can say for most of the staff. OP also has pitched well in the past few weeks.
Tom G: Uh….the Mets are playing at home. :-)
Oh yeah, and for all the grief we have given him, alot of it deserved, Delgado is on his way to hitting 30 homers and knocking in 100 runs. So kudos to Delgado and prayers that his hitting continues!
John and all.
I have for better or worse been very close to the understanding of brain issues in the last six to eight months in regards to a child and I can tell you this much in regards to a 29 year adult male who is a professional athlete. When doctors do MRIs and they all, every one comes up negative and they see no damage to the brain they essentially rely on the ability of the patient to communicate the problems they are having.
If Church has had migraine headaches since his teenage years it is beyond easy to see him dismissing his symptoms as migraines.
So while many of you borderline accuse the Mets and Minaya of endangering Ryan Church, you completely dismiss the oddles of medical advice that was given to both the Mets and Church.
Insofar as references to football and hockey players, you are talking about excessively high impact contact sports.
Did Pelfrey look great or what?

“Tom G: Uh….the Mets are playing at home. :-)”
Yea, that was obviously a mistake on my part. I’m not sure why I typed “road trip”. The brain and the fingers sometimes is off.
Tom G: Nah, I think it all comes with being a Met fan. They end up confusing you all the time. :-)
