Mets Chat Room: Game #3 at Philly

July
6

Coin Flip pitched well last time out, so what do you think, out by the fourth? Any chance of leaving here having gained ground means he has to win today. He has a decent 3.83 ERA in 10 starts against the Phillies, but is 2-3.

No Ryan Church today. Still suffering the fallout from the migraine. Last night Jerry Manuel said if Church was able to play he would. This morning he said it is his policy to sit a player the day after he pulls him from a game with an injury.

He also said Church could play today.

Oh well, the spin continues.

  1. RG

    Jerry is making me dizzy.

He spins almost as good as Omar.

    Ollie makes me dizzy, too.

  2. Stillsane

Here we go…..Did Delgado and Reyes fall asleep?

  3. Stillsane

Nice work by Flippy. Hope each inning does not go thirty pitches!

  4. Taylor

Aguayo should have sent Easley with Perez up next.

Easley, Anderson and Schneider all reached and we didn’t score. Uggh!!

  5. Taylor

    How NOT to do it.

  6. John Delcos

Good work by Perez to pick up Anderson’s error. That could have been an ugly inning-JD

  7. Taylor

LASER!! That left the yard in 2.3 seconds (est.)

  8. Taylor

Good point. Errors in the past have had a tendency to throw Perez off. Good to see him overcome it.

  9. Jeff H.

John, You know which Met(s) are All-Stars, right? I’m guessing that the Press has been told but the information is embargoed until the TBS show is over at 3.

  10. Taylor

Easley is hitting everything hard. I always thought he was an exceptionally talented player.

  11. Kevin

Wow Wagner on, no Wright, freaking Tejada and Aramis Ramirez… there are like 16 cubs on this team

  12. Taylor

That 3-0 pitch to Werth wasn’t even close. 3-0 he’s taking all the way. Its a free chance to throw a strike.

  13. Taylor

The All-Star teams are ridiculous. They always have been. I think they should let Baseball Prospectus choose the all-star teams. Then you’d a more fair and unbiased team.

  14. Kevin

Its a joke really… I don’t know who is worse the fans, selecting fukodome, soriano, and braun in the outfield or the players

  15. Jeff H.

No David Wright, no Jose Reyes. Only Billy Wagner.

  16. John Delcos

Wagner is the only Met selected to the All-Star team. ... Orlando Hernandez gave up two runs in four innings in a Gulf Coast League rehab game in Florida.-JD

  17. tomg

This team needs to take a crash course on how to get key two out hits, please I beg you!!!!

  18. Scott from Pelham

Still possible for Wright to be voted on as the last man on the roster.
I know the guys really want to be at the game but the 3 days off could probably be more help.

  19. John Delcos

I stand corrected on Coin Flip today. He has been outstanding. -JD

  20. tomg

JD, maybe Warthen is on to something. I mentioned on this blog that most of perez’s problems are between the ears and his mechanics. Supposedly Warthen worked on is delivery and even though this is only his second start that is two in a row. It’s a shame the mets don’t know hot to hit when they get men on base. I’m not sure but i think they stranded today 8 innings straight with runners in scoring position, awful.

  21. John Delcos

tomg: I gave Perez no chance to do this today after his first inning of almost 30 pitches. Pitching out of trouble in the second after the leadoff hitter reached on Marlon Anderson’s two-base error was the key of the game for him.-JD

  22. tomg

Unfortunately the Mets can’t get clutch hitting and there inconsistent offense going this game has a met loss written all all it. This is why this team can’t get any type of winning streak going, it’s sickening.

  23. tomg

There is a possibility this game could get delayed by rain. Checking the radar there is rain approaching Philly.

  24. pvhornet05

    Mets are losing this game.

  25. Kevin

It should have been delayed already, the Phillies already received a benefit when Duaner couldn’t handle the grounder.

  26. Scott from Pelham

The only good thing during the rain delay is that CW shows the Odd Couple -

  27. Scott from Pelham

If it keeps raining is this game a rain shortened win or suspended. I get confused with the new rules.

  28. pvhornet05

I believe they win but not sure.

  29. tomg

I don’t think this rain is going to last long enough for the crew chief to call the game but it would be a huge break for the Mets if that happened because if this game resumes we all know the Mets are going to lose this game. The Mets had opportunities to score almost every inning and the lack of clutch hitting and there inconsistent offense is the reason why this team continues to struggle around the .500 mark.

  30. John Delcos

The game is supposed to resume at 5:10.-JD

  31. John Delcos

Never mind that last post. As soon as they took the tarp off it started to rain again. It’s back on.-JD

  32. John Delcos

We had our first tarp slider. Head first into second. Then with the security guards chasing him he ducked into the tube they wrap the tarp with. Give him points for creativity.-JD

  33. Azy

Come on, just call it. :)

  34. alex

what channel is the game going to be on when it resumes?

  35. tomg

    Alex, CW11!!!

  36. Stillsane

    Any update?

  37. John Delcos

Still pouring. No word on when they’ll resume.-JD

  38. Stillsane

Thank you JD. Hope there is good food nearby.

  39. edfever

    JD,

Coin flip has had two games in a row that I’ve expected from Johan and not recieved, given a lead regardless of how small HE HELD IT !!!!!!

Offense is embarrassing how many opportunities do they waste.

Is it bad that i want this game rained out because i think Philly will score in the 8th with Howard up, two on and one out….

  40. Bob (southington, CT)

Delcos can we have an update since Gary, the booth and & CW11 haven’t given us a SINGLE one for 2.5 hours?

  41. tomg

    Edfever,

That’s how I feel exactly. This rain delay is prolonging the agony of defeat.

  42. Stillsane

Edfever – I also agree. I would love to see flippy get a decision like this one and if it can be gotten on a rain out, so be it. I think it would really help Perez.

  43. tomg

Looking at the radar the rain is starting to dissipate. I would say they probably will start playing within the next half an hour.

  44. Bob (southington, CT)

JD, what do you think about this idea:

I don’t like the Ryan Howard against Pedro Feliciano matchup. With Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell due to bat in the bottom of the 8th, I’d have to think it makes the most sense to use Billy Wagner here. Yes, it goes against the defined bullpen roles, however we really need to win this game and it should be managed as a must win. Heilman should be able to handle their 6-7-8 in the 9th. What makes the most sense, use our best option against their best 2 hitters or the home run king feliciano against Howard and Heilman against Burrell?

  45. John Delcos

Rain has stopped. The field is draining. They will play again.-JD

  46. tomg

    Bob (southington, CT),

I know you asked JD this question and I’m not JD but I am a die hard met fan so i know my team. I say using Wagner here is a bad idea. Wagner never does well when he comes in to an inning with inherited runners especially in the eighth inning, my opinion is it’s a bad idea.

  47. John Delcos

Bob: Tomg is right. Wagner is far better leading off an inning. Of Wagner’s five inherited runners, three have scored.-JD

  48. John Delcos

They are saying the game will resume at 7:10.-JD

  49. Bob (southington, CT)

I understand that Wagner has never been good with inherited runners, or going 1+ innings. However, THAT Wagner worse than THIS Feliciano?

  50. John Delcos

Feliciano is miserable this year in that category, with nine of 26 runners scoring.-JD

  51. Bob (southington, CT)

This game is resuming? That’s unfortunate, we’re in trouble. LGM!!

  52. Bob (southington, CT)

    Howard is 4 for 16 with 1 HR, 5Ks, 0BB against Feliciano.

  53. tomg

    Bob (southington, CT),

after leaving a neighborhood of friends on base I knew the Mets were in trouble 2 hours ago. The rain delay has prolonged the inevitable.

  54. Luis

If Wags cannot handle coming in wi runners on in a game like this, then what is he paid for??!! A REAL relief pitchers DEMANDS the ball right now, AND finishes the game!!

  55. Stillsane

Great to see Beltran come through with the two out RBI.

  56. Trunzo

    you cant be serious…

  57. Stillsane

    That’s our allstar….someone please deflate Wagner’s ego….just a little…..please!!!!!!

  58. BH

Is this Wagner’s last year on his contract? What a pile of crap, he can’t pitch anymore under anything less than ideal conditions. He’s throwing 93 out there right now.

  59. RMKMets

I dont want to hear another word out of Wagner’s mouth the rest of the year. He has been directly responsible for 5 losses this year and now potentially another one now…this will be a killer and likely season ender if they can’t regroup. What a stupid bum…total example of someone who loves to talk but can’t back it up

  60. Stillsane

Wagner just wasted every Met fan out there’s time. Manuel should pull him now after the single since he is once again getting hit. He is the true case of either having it out there or not. Once he does not have it, he should be lifted from the game.

  61. Jay

Oh well. Tie game- off to extra innings and win this game.

    C’mon boys, LETS DO IT!

  62. metsdiehard

    Billy Choked!

  63. Stillsane

This was a wonderful game and a real morale boasting victory for the players and fans as well….Then Wagner came in and threw it all away. Wagner’s only comments to the fan and on his regular radio show should be an apology. He gets paid for results and for shutting down the opposition. Today, he did neither.

  64. John Delcos

``Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit drinking.’’-JD

  65. tomg

Wagner has always been the closer who blows a save chance when the game is a big game, The phillies just lock up lidge who is 19 for 19 with a era less than 1. They have the real closer and was smart to let wagner go to another team. I still think philly blows so the last laugh is on the phillies fans if they think there team is going to win a world series. They couldn’t even win a playoff game last year. Unfortunately the Mets are worse.

  66. jk

John, I hope you get paid overtime.

  67. Stillsane

JD…Excellent Airport reference…Would be laughing except I am still seeing Wagner giving up the lead… Also just heard Sabathia in on his way to the Brewers. May be they want Wagner also.

  68. John Delcos

The reports are a deal is in place for Sabathia. Huge gamble on two levels. One, if they can’t sign him. And two, if they do sign him. At close to 300 pounds, you don’t think he’s eventually going to break down?-JD

  69. Stillsane

Agreed JD. – They have always said that his weight continues to be a problem. Show has to finish this inning here after giving up this single.

  70. Stillsane

Good Job Smith! Let’s Go Mets in the Eleventh!

  71. Buck

So are you going to accept Wagner’s lame and BS excuses withoput challenging him fopr being a loser in every game against important foes for his entire career. Will he ehine about stretching twice and you just write it down for your Lower Hudson readership? I hope Perez beats his butt in the press just like mouth poison Wagner did and all you guys lauded him for being poison.

  72. John Delcos

Buck/Sloppy/Guv/DC … Try decaf for all your personalities.-JD

  73. Dan Gurney

Huge gamble by the Brewers but they haven’t made the playoffs since 1982 and it’s Sheets last year. Who will win more games in the next 10 years 300 pound Sabathia who threw a lot of pitches under age 25 or Sheets?

  74. Jay

JD: Brewers have to make this deal and quick. There is a chance any pitcher is going to break down over time, even the fat ones. And if he doesnt resign they get 2 picks, so if they can win with him its a worthwhile gamble.

And who thought we would ever be talking about a mid-market team getting the biggest chip in the trade market? Baseball is unbelieveable.

  75. Stillsane

Big Hit Tatis! Hope the Mets hold and Fernando gets a reward start tomorrow from Jerry!

  76. Ray Sadecki

Ha Ha Hee Hee, Im back. Lets go Mets!!!

  77. Stillsane

    Excellent job, Joe Smith!!!!

  78. Ray Sadecki

    Yessss!!!!

  79. RMKMets

    Last nite’s MVP: Tom Gordon
    Tonite’s MVP: Perez and Tatis

  80. Jay

Now we just need to carry this into tomorrow and through the week. TIme for a good run.

  81. RMKMets

It’s a shame they wasted Friday…that should have been our game too. We really should be going into tomorrow looking to sweep.

  82. pvhornet05

RMK, gotta add Joe Smith as well. He pitched great.

    Hey Phillies, YOU GOT TATISED

  83. dave

So far Tatis has turned into an interesting player. He is coming up big in big situations.

That said I hope they don’t sign him to a fat 3 year contract next year.

  84. tomg

    Ok,
I admit it was a surprise nice win. lets not get illusion of Grandeur with this team. Wagner in a big game is shaky at best. The offense is constructed of non clutch hitters and is inconsistent. That’s the reason why this team has struggled to go over .500 hundred. The SP is the teams strong point but the bull pen is average. Let’s not get to high because this team will bring you just as fast down. The outfield without Church and Alou is mediocre. It was a pleasant surprise to see the mets in tonight for a change. Don’t get your hopes up to high
because they will crash and burn just as easy.

  85. BH

Good job by Smith, I have to admit I thought we were done, even after the Tatis HR b/c I didn’t think we could hold their bats down anymore.

  86. Mike C.

I second the reward start at first for Tatis tomorrow.

That and everyone other than Tatis has to buy Smith a nice shiny gold watch for going so far and above the call of duty.

  87. tomg

I hope I am wrong but why is it that i have this vision of pedro giving up homeruns to Utley, Howard amd Burrel tomorrow.

  88. Scott from Pelham

Back to 500 at last. Now lets see if they can turn the corner. A month ago this team would have folded after Wagner gives up the bomb.

  89. tomg

    Scott from Pelham,

good point, I agree but I’m not sold yet. if pedro goes out tomorrow and pitches a decent game and the Mets hit and win and than go on to win the next 2 series 2 out of 3 than I will start to believe. I’m not there just yet.

  90. Dan-Rutgers

This team is the source of my drinking

  91. Jay L

I cringe at the fact Ryan Church was not used in a 12-inning game. Wouldn’t be surprised if they shut him down through the All-star break.

Mets are gonna have to go get themselves an outfielder, that’s the bottom line. There are in a spot now where for the next 3 months, they don’t know from one day to the next if Church or Alou will be healthy. I think if they are willing to take on a little salary, somebody like Ibanez could be had for minor prospects. Worst case scenario would be that all are healthy at the same time – no big deal, because with Alou’s tenuous knees, there’s plenty of room for 3 regulars to cover the two corner positions in a pennant race. But they can’t continue to go through the year crossing their fingers on Alou and Church. Both are each going to struggle to play in half of their remaining games. I love Endy, but its hard to carry his bat in your lineup everyday without a competent offensive counterpart at the other corner.

  92. JohnM

Big Blunder Billy Bailed By Big Bat Tatis.

Why couldn’t his name be Batis?

  93. Mike C.

If you DL Church now, three of those days are the All Star Break. I’m just sayin’, here. Shut him down now and hope that after the extra rest he is finally ACTUALLY healthy.

  94. dave

    Mike,

I agree. Since the team has no clue on Church, better to be safe and give him extra rest. he wont like it but who cares.

  95. Steve (The Original)

I’d make a serious run at Randy Winn. Hits for a pretty good average and gets on base. They really must have another OF bat if they are going to have a shot at this thing.
