Mets Chat Room: Philly, Game #2

July
5

It’s doubtful the Mets will get a better pitched game than they got last night from Johan Santana. John Maine coming off his “tired arm’’ game in St. Louis, so he will be watched carefully.

The offense will have to come up bigger than it did for Santana.

Jerry Manuel was asked before the game what Mets should make the All-Star team and he said Billy Wagner and David Wright. That’s about it. Santana has pitched well enough, ERA wise to go.

Check out the latest poll to vote for your Met All-Star.

It’s amazing to see David’s average heading toward .300 again considering how much he was struggling before in the .270’s. The fact that he remains in the top 10 in rbi’s despite his occasional struggle at the plate shows how great of a hitter he is. He certainly deserves to go to the All-star game and it is frightening to see some mets fans claim he is overrated.

  2. John Delcos

Jonathan: Couldn’t agree with you more. Overrated is something Wright isn’t. Not by a long shot.-JD

  3. dave

I don’t think he is over-rated, altho I would like him to fix his throwing which costs us runs

    JD

For your poll I think David, Church and Santana are deserving of the All Star game. You could make the case for Jose too if you can get past the errors in the field.

But for our position players I think Church has been the most consistent on the team both in the field and at the plate.

Wagner also gets consideration for the numbers he has put up.

  5. Kevin

Church sure looks good in that two hole

  6. John Delcos

Kevin: The thinking is he’ll get more fastballs. It worked earlier this year. Jerry Manuel was talking before the game about putting Beltran there to snap him out of his slump (2-17) going into the game.-JD

  7. Kevin

    JD,

I think it could work either way, the problem is the 5th position if left to Easley (who has been hot) or Delgado is that the cleanup spot just won’t see the pitches that the 2 hole will in front of Wright. Ideally with Alou (yeah i know), I think the best lineup at this point might look:

    Reyes
    Beltran
    Wright
    Church
    Alou
    Delgado
    Easley
    Castro/Schneider

When is the press going to stop kissing up to this lying manager we now have. He says he’s going to strtetch his starters and he takes Santana out with less than 100.m He says the pen will have roles. They have no roles just like before, he says a hot guy will stay in theline up and that’s bull. You press guys like him calling fans names and players girls and so you gove him a free ride. disgraceful press coverage of this club. When is the press going to say why he got driven out of Chicago. when is the press going to challenge him for bad moves and not knowing how to do a double switch like last night. When?????

  9. John Delcos

Buck: Hi Buck … He never called the fans names, that stuff in the Post was overblown and misinterpreted. C’mon, if he really said that, then every other paper would have written it because afterall, it was a public forum. ... I’m not seeing what you’re saying. He’s only been on the job a couple of weeks. ... Actually, the press coverage has been softer than it should. There are times when this club should have been buried, but hasn’t been.-JD

It sure is nice to see Manuel at least receptive to the idea of switching Beltran out of the 4th spot to get him out of his slump. I feel Beltran would be best utilized as a number two or three hitter since his production has clearly dropped in the recent lineups. That is the downside of not having a prototypical clean up hitter in the lineup – or, as in Delgado’s case, having one that cannot seem to bust out of his slump. That seems to be a major problem for the consistency of the team as each day they’re getting such different production from each spot in the lineup and it’s just not fluent. But, that said, each team faces similar problems and it’s up to the team to step up and cover each other’s mistakes.

By the way, how about that John Maine throwing pure gas today? :-)

  11. John Delcos

Maine has been throwing well. He was up to 95 that inning.-JD

  12. Kevin

Now lets hope our offense doesn’t confuse John for one Johan.

  13. Jonathan

A little off topic, but does the team plan on giving another media tour of citi field anytime soon? It’s nice to see the progress of the stadium.

  14. John Delcos

Jonathan: I’m sure they will after the break. We usually get one every six weeks or so.-JD

  15. John Delcos

They’ve scored on a DP and an error. The offense is really clicking tonight.-JD

  16. John Delcos

Damn, I drew Geoff Jenkins in the no-hitter pool.-JD

  17. Jonathan

It sucks to feel the 3-run homerun coming before Howard even sees the first pitch.

  18. BH

1st hit is a 3 run HR? Come on! I am so sick of this @#$, half this team deserves to get their ass kicked for having absolutely no ability to concentrate and execute on a regular basis, and Maine just added his name to the list.

  19. John Delcos

Some guy just proposed on the video board. I was in Texas once and the girl got angry and ran away. I don’t remember if she hit him first.-JD

  20. Kevin

This stadium is a disgrace to baseball

  21. Kevin

I didn’t realize that they compensated for the lack of speed on your fast ball by expanding the strike zone 3 inches outside and 3 inches lower.

  22. John Delcos

A disgrace is walking Jamie Moyer.-JD

  23. John Delcos

It’s Maine’s left arm. We haven’t had an announcement yet.-JD

  24. John Delcos

Maine has a cramp in his left forearm.-JD

  25. John Delcos

Good decision to hold the runner at third. He would have been nailed at the plate with a good throw.-JD

  26. Jonathan

Bases Loaded, 2 outs, tied game. Wright is the guy you want at the plate. Let’s see if he steps up and comes through for this team.

  27. Jonathan

Sigh. Gotta love this team’s ability to leave so many men in scoring position.

  28. John Delcos

Jonathan: It is one of their more endearing qualities, isn’t it?-JD

  29. bob

oy vey, if the mets dont win tonight I may just kill myself

  30. Jeff H.

John, I found this odd: Jerry walks Jenkins, hitting .236, to pitch to Coste but last night he didn’t walk Victorino, hitting .263, to pitch to Coste.

  31. bob

    thats it, wheres the gun?

  32. paulunde

‘Gotta love Feliciano he is very consistent.

  33. John Delcos

When it comes to booing, some of you guys at Shea are amateurs when it comes to the wolves in Philly.-JD

  34. Jonathan

HUGE HIT!!! Way to go, schneider. That’ll get you back in the lineup.

  35. Kevin

    JD,

What’s the story with replacing Church? Is he hurt or did the lineup card just win an epic chess match with Manuel?

  36. John Delcos

NOTE: Ryan Church is out of the game. He complained of dizziness.-JD

  37. BH

On that note (re: Church) the entire Mets medical staff should be replaced. Man did they screw up.

  38. Kevin

Sweet lord, tell me the guys has allergies and the pollen is off the charts in Philly this time of year…

  39. paulunde

Good game for the manager tonight. He made some great moves. Manuel was a big part of why we won this game.

A couple of other points: Carlos Delgado sometimes reminds me of… Carlos Delgado, lately. He is certainly having a better year than last season. I wonder if he can keep going?

I guess we’ll be without Church for some more time. Lets hope this is not concussion-related, but how can it not be? Jeez. We need help in our outfield!!

  40. Azy

Great win, also, I think Reyes should back up Hanley in the all star game.

  41. Scott from Pelham

Good win, playing with a bit more focus they look sharper in the field. They really need Beltran to get going.

Did you notice both teams used the back up catcher to pinch hit. This usually never happens and yet the ground did not open up or any other disaster of epic proportion. I guess that third catche is not really necessarry after all.

  42. Mike C.

Nice win but… frankly .500 teams have the occasional nice win.

Pleasant as hell but hardly anything to spark my imagination toward Turning Point #549.

  43. John Delcos

-Maine has a cramp in his left forearm. He doesn’t know how it started, but said he doesn’t believe it should keep him out of his next start.

-Church left the game with dizziness brought in by a migraine. He said he’s had a history of migraines since high school and it wasn’t concussion related.-JD

  44. TJ

But how would he know for sure? Post concussion syndrome can cause migraines too.
