Mets Chat Room: Can Pedro rebound edition?

July
2

Pedro Martinez said he’s fine and the Mets say he’s fine. His ERA says otherwise. After his last start, Martinez said he might have been tipping his pitches, which is kind of an odd thing for a pitcher to admit.

Truth is, Martinez has pitched decently in two of his five starts since his return. And, he says he’s healthy. He’s saying he’s still rusty and might be expecting too much from himself.

One of the St. Louis announcers just said Pedro was a BORDERLINE Hall of Famer. They are now on permanent ban for the rest of my life. I refuse to listen to stupid people.

  2. JM

Phils are starting to play better it seems, which means the Mets might have to win more than once every other night to keep it tight.

  3. JM

    BH,

Agreed. If you watched him pitch in his prime, you know that the discussion begins and ends with his face on a plaque in upstate New York, save your extra ballots.

  4. JM

And he cannot be happy tonight.

  5. John Delcos

Ouch! Nice little hole the Mets are in. Pedro might indeed be a Hall of Famer, but it's certainly not by anything he's done with the Mets lately.-JD

  6. tomg

Wow, I turn the game on just in time in the bottom of the first inning to watch the same garbage I've been watching out of Pedro. I guess he is still tipping his pitches or could it be that he is 36 years old coming off major arm surgery and is pretty much done.

  7. tomg

I now have turned the game off because before it got started it's over.

  8. John Delcos

tomg: I'm betting on the latter. Maybe it's both, what an awful combination. When that happens you give up three-run homers. Oh, wait … JD

  9. John Delcos

tomg: C'mon, what kind of spirit is that? Ryan Church just got a hit.-JD

  10. Josh

    Pedro is FINISHED

  11. John Delcos

Josh: That reminds me … please vote in the Pedro Poll.-JD

  12. John Delcos

You might not see it on TV, but I see it here. After every inning the Mets just walk or slowly jog off the field. I once had a scout tell me that if you want to get a measure of a team's heart, just watch it come on and off the field between innings. And, it's not just the score. This is something I've noticed before.-JD

  13. Ray Sadecki

The problem with Pedro is he is not locatating like he did before. I dont think hes done. He still has good velocity. If he was throwing 96mph fastballs i would agree.

  14. Josh

I wonder how Pedro will fare next Tuesday against the Giants… oh wait, I forgot, our stupid pitching coach moved him up so now he'll start on Monday IN Philly! I wonder how many runs he'll give up in his next start; 6, 7, 8?? You never know, the sky's the limit with this tool…

  15. tomg

    JD,
I said that a while ago, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know this team has no heart, just watch the games. What is really sad is the future doesn't look good in Mets land. The Mets have to many old players in key spots and no farm system. If they go through free agency in the future they lose there picks, hence, no rebuilding there farm system.

  16. JM

I disagree that Pedro is done. Unless he is hurt, he'll be better.

  17. Ray Sadecki

I meant 86 mph fastballs. Pedro will be alright, just mark my words. And this game is not over either. Mets got 3 hits off pinero last inning and would have had a nice rally without Mr. Double play Delgado killing it. Yes, Its OK to be negative about Delgado.

  18. JM

    Still punching.

  19. John Delcos

All year in situations like this the Mets would come away with only a run. They need to do much better than that now.-JD

  20. John Delcos

And, that might have been the worst swing Church has had all year.-JD

  21. JM

    Little jab.

  22. John Delcos

Dammit … I want Easley to play everyday at second base.-JD

  23. JM

And I'm keeping a list of everyone here who shovels dirt on Pedro.

  24. John Delcos

And, still they stroll out to the field. Unbelievable.-JD

  25. Ray Sadecki

Just call me the Prophet. Tomg, you can be the Prophet of Doom.

  26. Ray Sadecki

    Hey John, Strolling is cool.

  27. John Delcos

    It's starting to rain.-JD

  28. John Delcos

Ray … It is when it's through the park with a beautiful woman on your arm.-JD

  29. John Delcos

Speaking of which, who should that be? Any nominations? Ladies, of course, can have their vote, too. Might as well have some run during the delay.-JD

  30. JM

Might not be the worst thing for Pedro to come out of this game, but they can't afford to blow through the pen before Philly.

  31. tomg

Ray Sadecki July 2nd, 2008 at 9:17 pm

"Just call me the Prophet. Tomg, you can be the Prophet of Doom."

Sorry ray if I bring you down, maybe if this team played consistently better I wouldn't be the gloom and doom blogger.
Maybe I should change my blog name to the gloom and doom.

  32. Tiffany

I cast my vote for Suzyn Waldman…

  33. John Delcos

You have to figure if this lasts long, and it looks as if it will, that they'll lose Pedro for the night. Mets aren't in again, so if they bag it we have a DH tomorrow. Not what they want before Philly.-JD

  34. JM

The gal from Top Chef, Padma Lakshmi.

  35. Josh

John: Off topic, but what was the reasoning behind switching Maine and Perez's starts??

  36. John Delcos

They are saying another 40 to 45 minutes.-JD

  37. Ray Sadecki

I will take Madonna. Oops. Never mind, I will take Angelina Jolie, Yeah thats the ticket.

  38. dave

    Jessica alba

  39. Tiffany

I'm confused now. Are we picking hotties or someone to stroll alongside through the park with Delcos? If it's the former, I gotta go with Angie Dickinson. If it's the latter, I gotta go with Angie Dickinson.

  40. John Delcos

They are now saying around 10:15 … The rain has stopped and Martinez is walking to the bullpen. They might not have wasted him afterall.-JD

  41. tomg

Sorry Folks, Gloom and Doom here. I just checked NOAA's radar for the ST.Louis area and there is a wide band of thunderstorms moving south east towards St.Louis area. It doesn't look good for the rest of this game. Look at the bright side, at least the Mets didn't lose.

  42. tomg

    JD,

all I can say is they will be lucky to get another half an hour of the game in because there is thick line of rain and thunderstorms heading for St.Louis. Actually there is a severe thunderstorm heading for St. Louis. Good Luck!!!

  43. JM

Heads up play from Jose for a change. Way to bluff it.

  44. Dan Gurney

Can we take a sample of Rick Ankiel's blood for future testing?

  45. Ray Sadecki

They should just put luis on the Dl already. Its a perfect time with the break coming. He is a much better second baseman than he has shown this year.

  46. John Delcos

Joe Smith in for Mets. Pedro goes five innings, gives up five runs on seven hits, including two homers.-JD

  47. Ray Sadecki

Its the new, never say die Mets I tell ya. 7-5 Metsies.

  48. Ray Sadecki

Boy, Is it just me, or has it gotten quiet here?

  49. Ray Sadecki

    8:26-9:25 = 31 posts
10:45 till now 4 posts, 3 by me one by JD. I rest my case.

  50. Josh

    Feliciano is useless…

  51. tomg

    Ray Sadecki,

looks like the same Mets to me!!!!

  52. pvhornet05

is that joe torre managing the mets. how many times is jerry gonna use feliciano. scho is just as effective against lefties.

  53. tomg

I do admit that when Pedro gave up 4 in the first I figure this was going to be a blow out win for the cardinals. Pedro settled down and the Mets scored some runs. Unfortunately all that good Karma wasted away by Felicano.

  54. tomg

OH yea and by the way, beltran up the inning before with wright on third and less than two outs and what does carlos do, nothing, what else is new. That was a huge at bat by Beltran.

  55. Ray Sadecki

tomg, good to hear from you, bud, I thought you went to bed early tonight. not.

  56. Ray Sadecki

I agree about beltran, need to get him out of the clean up spot. How about trying Church there?

  57. tomg

Ray, I actually was delighted to see the boys come back and make me look silly and maybe I was wrong. Unfortunately Feliciano decided th throw the game away. This is why I don't get excited with this team anymore this year. When you think they might have turned the corner and they make you start to believe, this crap happens.

  58. Josh

Schoenweis should've been brought in to face Duncan, especially considering Duncan had homered off Feliciano before…

  59. tomg

Like I said Ray, I will get excited and in to this season as a met fan when i see this team be more consistent and reel off a good winning streak. The mets win some lose some just isn't going to cut it for me to get excited.

  60. john

I hope the bottom of the order can put a run up for wagner, I'd hate to see muniz against pujols in the bottom of the 9th.

  61. tomg

There is a ton of rain getting closer to St. Louis. The mets better get a run here and get wagner out there to seal the deal or this game might not get completed of course unless the cardinals win it in the ninth.

  62. john

    i knew it.

  63. Dan Gurney

AAARRRGGGHH!!! Beaten by the Trojan Glaus! Fall behind, come back and blow it again.

  64. tomg

This is the 2008 New York mets, win some, lose some, nothing to exciting. I'm past expecting anything good from this team so I really don't care anymore. This team can't get out of it's own way, it's just laughable.

  65. pvhornet05

    where the hell is scho?

  66. tomg

I said after the first month and a half this was a .500 team. They keep this trend up and they might not even be a .500 team. Who would have thought that before this year started.

  67. Azy

And Yadier Molina kills the Mets again. He takes out Sanchez, who can't pitch tonight, and Feliciano gives up a homer in Sanchez's inning.

  68. Annie Savoy

RE: Strolling on and off the field: Derek Jeter and Don Mattingly were playing catch in the outfield late in the day at the old Yankee Field in Ft. Lauderdale during Derek's rookie year. There was no one around. Derek started walkling in when Don said: "Always run going out and in from the field – you never know who is watching"

Watch Derek now – he's always running.

Someone to stroll through the park with – rain or shine: Ron Darling

  69. it ain't Willie's fault

Phils show hideous Met front office what to do with overpaid/underperforming players: Brett Myers sent to minors. Mets crap stay in bigs and play every day.

Met hideous front office signs crippled second baseman to 4 year deal. Moron interim nmanager plays him for 18 innings. Then, when he's hurt agian, interim moron manager says maybe he shouldn't have done it. Pathetic press gives him free ride because he says cute things.

Interim morn manager pitches worst releiver in 9th inning of tie game. Hideous front office sends guy down immediately after game. Meanwhile moronic interim manager keeps Schoeneweis and Wagner "fresh". Again, pathetic press gives him free ride because he says cute things.

Fan base starting to get it. It ain't Willie's fault. Mets suck.

  70. If only

The world according to Omar Minaya

If only someone could make Carlos Delgado stay 31 years old… I might have looked for a decent part time first baseman who bats right handed. Screwed that one up.
If only someone told me a guy who has to have both knees operated on might lose his range, his speed and his ability to play everyday. I might not have given him a 4 year deal. Screwed that one up.
If only someone told me that Moises Alou was kidding me when he said last year's injuries were a fluke. I might have looked for a healthy guy to play the outfield. Screwed that one up.
If only someone told me that a starter who missed a year with major surgery might not be so good when he returned, I might have looked for a dependable innings eater. Screwed that one up.
If only someone told me that Oliver Perez only has one good year out of every three, I might have traded him when his value was high. Screwed that one up.
If only someone told me that Wagner poisons every clubhouse and sucks in the clutch, I might have looked elsewhere for a closer. Screwed that one up.
If only someone told me that a horrible bench with no fielding ability would hurt the team I might not have gotten these old guys. Screwed that one up.
If only if only if only…. Good thing the owner likes me…....

  71. Doom and Gloom

I heard a rumor that Omar Minaya is thinking about running for
governor of New York next term, Yippi!!!!!
If you think living in New York is hard now just wait!!!

  72. Annie Savoy

    Doom and Gloom –
Everyone eligible is thinking about running for Governor of New York next term. Due to recent events it will be an easy seat to get.

  73. Taylor

You people are watching a different Mets team than I am. We are talking about the NY Mets baseball club here right? On the SNY network? I see a team that hustles its ass off. It doesn't give up and fights till the end of every game and every AB. What the heck are all of you watching. Show me one instance of a Met player giving up or not trying. That's right. You can't. Because the Mets bust their asses. They came back nicely last night after getting in 4-0 hole. Pedro looked fine. Yes I watched the entire game so I know he allowed 2 HRs. Do you really think every bad pitch he makes all season will be put into the seats? Part of that is bad luck. The other part is that his command is still coming back to him. That was a disappointing game but I like they way they played.

  74. Ray Sadecki

Taylor, you are right on. I knew after the walk off homer by Glaus, this board which was so quiet when the Mets came back, was going to explode into crying and gnashing of teeth. I am just checking in now to see what I am glad I missed.

  75. Steve C.

Taylor thats the team I see as well. but there are some players that dont/cant pull their weight.

Delgado is the biggest hole and wildcard. His sux as a fielder, and his hitting has been very very spotty he only produces when he's knocked down the batting order.
Castillo has great offense his Defense is so-so. Easley is a better fit.

Endy finally owns Left field , church is back and Beltran is coming out of a hitting slump. The only positions to fix other than 1st is Pitching and Reyes. I think Reyes will come around.. The pitching will have to change or get better. Pedro should just retire a winner.

When I watch I look beyond the statistics and I watch the player and the heart and the reaction as they play.

Catchers we are split, we have a glove in schneider and we have a bat in castro ..

Waiting for alou is like waiting for Pedro. we should just use him as a Pinch Hitter. yes he's great but his injuries keep piling up. we get 1 or 2 Stellar performances because he goes out to win, then gets hurt.

Sometimes you have to wake up smell the coffee and settle your losses and build new. Its time to build new. Goodbye pedro, degado, Castillo , Alou (Castillo, Alou are the last guys i want gone of the 3, they play to win, but castillo sux as a fielder and both are Injured permanently)

Lets play ball and Lets Go mets Go.

  76. Steve C.

Ray, I have been out of town and busy with work. thats why I havent been able to post nor watch the game. speaking of which I am gone for another week, so guess what not hearing from me, means I am not around to hear from …

  77. Taylor

    Steve C. I agree.

Here's the deal with Castillo. He really truly has bad knees. Its not just a rumor. Those bad knees drastically reduce his range in the field. Thats just how it is. He has been getting on base so his offensive contributions have been good.

As much as Alou has been injury prone, injuries are not inevitable. He may avoid the DL for the rest of the year. If we get lucky thats what will happen.

Delgado has been awful offensively for a 1st baseman and his defense is as bad as you say. But he's been much better of late. Maybe he's turned a corner. He still has tremendous bat speed and crush the ball. He just has to get it started quickly or time the pitcher better. He has been doing that. He hasn't had as many swings and misses lately.

I don't really know what you mean when you mention Reyes. What I see is a guy having a tremendous year. Not the best fielding year of his career but not so bad really and just terrific offensively. Stolen bases are the most overrated stat. Who care if Reyes isn't stealing a lot? I don't.

I really think Pedro Martinez will find his command and finish very strong. I mean sub 3.00 ERA the rest of the way (not finishing with sub 3.00 ERA but sub 3.00 ERA from here on). We'll see.

  78. John M.

    http://www.hotfootblog.com/2008/07/03/tidbits-tony-pena-on-mets-radar-mets-shopping-ollie/

Mets looking at Tony Pena as a possible manager next year.

  79. Mike C.

Injuries are not inevitable with Alou? Have you… not been watching the last two years? Dude can still hit but dude can't stay healthy.

Delgado really hasn't been all that much better as of late, what's changed is that he's been having a few more of his occasional big games, when the stars align for him to get his batspeed back for a game or two.

A day game, playing DH, in Yankee Stadium, against a crappy pitcher… sure, he has a big game.

After a day-off, after a travel day, in a home run park, against a pitcher who doesn't have the stuff to exploit his old and injured upper body…

Sure. He has a good one here and there. But that's hardly consistent improvement.

Castillo is done and has been done. Knees are gone and the guy's whole game was built upon his speed as a batter and his range as a fielder.

Church is still a question mark, Schneider can't hit and Castro can't stay healthy long enough to be an everyday starter even though if he could he'd have more than enough bat for an NL catcher.

Pedro's finally run out of gas, Maine and Perez are largely coin-flips, Pelfrey's still developing.

    The bullpen's erratic at best.

Look, you can say "it's only 4.5 out" until you're blue in the face but… unless something is coming down the road to chance the above significantly, "Being Close" in early July don't mean a thing.
