Mets Chat Room: Day-nighter edition
-
- June
- 27
Here we are at the Stadium, in the first of 18 innings. Pelfrey and Pedro for your team today. The Mets are on the board early with David Wright’s RBI single, which is not a surprise.
The Mets have outscored the opposition by 56 runs over the first three innings of the game. However, they’ve been outscored by 62 runs from the fifth through eighth innings, an indication of their starters losing it and the bullpen never having it. Of course, the offense isn’t blameless there, either.
From the pregame:
-Best case scenario has Ryan Church returning Sunday.
-Jerry Manuel called Carlos Delgado “an enigma.”
-New Met Andy Phillips, who plays first sits while Fernando Tatis, not a first baseman, plays in the first game.
-Jerry Manuel’s decision to start Martinez in the second game was for the fan’s benefit at Shea.
I’ll be with you all day. Take care.

Heads up play by Marlon to get to third.-JD
Crappy at-bats by Schneider and Reyes to leave him there.-JD
Next time you see Schneider tell him to shave because anyone who wouldn't be a slugger in girl's softball should have a clean shaven face. He is the most horrible "regular" in all of baseball.
Why is Delgado an enigma…? Does Manuel and Minaya drink the same potion that refuses to recognize the aging process in the new drug testing world of MLB?
PS: Yes, Anderson ran the bases well. He still should be a PH.
Just checking in since I am able to watch the game. Pelfrey looks good so far but not dominant. Concerned whenever the Mets face a journeyman, rookie, or over the hill pitcher but would love to see them sweep the Yankee stadium side.
Guv – Is he really the worst in all of baseball? Or is he second to the worst?
Schneider's season started with such promise. I guess the injuries have gotten him out of the groove he was in for a while there. Right now he doesn't seem to be that much of a factor for the team. For a short while there I thought the Mets had found a catcher of the present and the future.
Did I see it wrong when he was up? Probably but I thought that he was hitting .260? No/
Had to get to this guy sometime.
JD- Sounds like a split crowd today? That was a sizeable roar for Beltran.
Schneider entered the game at .260, two homers and 16 RBI.-JD
clm: We've had some ``Let's Go Mets'' chanting.-JD
Just heard a healthy boo for Trot Nixon. No doubt that was Red Sox related.-JD
Hopefully, to paraphrase my mother, his next at bat he gives them something to boo about.
Schneider also has thrown out 44% of basestealers. I could think of a lot of worse players than him.
Horrible play by Reyes on RBI liner by A-Rod. Brutal.-JD
I don't understand why Phillips is not in there against his former team. 'Seems like a natural to me…
Well Pelfrey is going to be put to the test here. It would really be a statement if he can get out of this one.
Everyting the yanks hit is finding a hole.
another cheap hit.
It really is amazing. Four runs – almost all on cheap hits.
paulunde: The hardest hit ball of the inning was the one by A-Rod that got by Reyes, and he should have had it.-JD
Well, he made a nice play for the second out.
Dan Geise, given a lead, looks like a HOFer against Minaya All everything bottom half of the lineup.
Five homers and 18 RBI total for the last four hitters of the order.-JD
This start was a complete mismatch for Pelfrey….
pelfrey usually starts off strong, but as soon as he makes one mistake, he makes 5 more and the game's over. he's returned to his old form.
Sounds a lot like Shea when they score today. Take that!!!
hmmm…i like their uniforms today. in my opinion, they should wear the blue hat as much as possible, with the black hat/black jersey as an alternate. get rid of that black and blue hat, it's terrible. anyone agree?
I saw something on one of those 'science' shows where a girl throwing a softball blew away this guy throwing 95,
they had a plate which he hit and did some damage to. she shattered it.
i know that is not all there is to pitching, but it was pretty impressive.
I like the blue hat a lot. I wish they would go with the pinstripes and blue hat at home and just what they are doing today on the road.
DELGADO HITS A GRAND SLAM!!!!!
Nice to know delgado accepts gifts graciously
Its twice as sweet against the skanks
Yup, he's washed up. What a cheap homerun. Tongue in cheek!!!
the signature arod HR in garbage time.
Let's see, it is almost 5PM, we're in the middle of the 6th inning and the next game is scheduled for 8PM across town.
What's your guess for the new starting time at Shea tonight?
The enigma Manuel was talking about before the game regarding Delgado is this: Would anybody really be surprised if he struck out four times tonight at Shea?-JD
I think you can kiss that 8 pm start goodbye.-JD
good the later the start the better to get stuff done while the sun is up. I for one wouldn't be surprised at all. But I think that sometimes you can use up a day in an at bat and other times you go hot the entire day.
Ron Darling said that was the way to break our for Delgado. I love Ronnie but we have a long way to go to say that.
Still, the way he gets trashed you would wonder what it's like to be aging in any area of life and hear stuff like that.
I am sold. It has to be the blue hats.-JD
You just know that the Mets are going to have trouble scoring runs in the second game, dontcha? :-)
JD: Was Reyes the ONLY player who made a brutal play out there today? I've never seen someone with a bigger bug up his butt than you do with Reyes. Sheesh.
Boy. This Delgado fellow looks like a natural DH to me. If Big Papi were to miss the rest of the season, I wonder if Theo wouuld be interested.
Steve: Get a grip buddy. Reyes screwed up when the Yankees took the lead in the third inning. It became forgotten when Delgado went nuts. Even so, he should have made the play.-JD
Uh? Maybe he is breaking out!!
paulunde: If the Red Sox made an offer now, would you take it even with what he did so far today?-JD
Wow… 9 RBIs for Delgado?? Simply mindblowing…
Wow the offense looks a whole lot better when Delgado can actually use that piece of wood he holds up at the plate.
JD: C'mon now, you must realize that you are harder on Reyes than any other player on the team. Castillo made a brutal play, Abreu made a brutal play…I don't know, maybe i'm over protective of Jose, but it sure looks on the surface that Reyes is the only one you single out for bad plays. If that's not the case, you have my apology.
john: I am a few seconds behind you guys. I am now following the game on my iPhone and your blog & MLB.com as I leave the Lincoln Tunnel (in a bus.) When I mused about trading Delgado, it was before that 2nd blast. Even so, I'd have to consider the move. The problem is that we need a 1st baseman, because as I have been saying all along, I still think we'll be in the post season. What'd would you do?
15 – 5, maybe we should just play the second game here…...
Jose needs some guidance – if not John, who?
Howie has put this game 'in the book' – one with extra pages for all the home runs etc. But, the night is young, stay tuned for the evening show at Shea – Pedro is waiting.
That was fun, lets do it again !!!
a nice way for the mets to send off their home-away-from-home.
and delgado doubled his amount of rbi's this season! now he probably won't hit the ball until august! but all joking aside, i was impressed with the hitting today, but Pelf didn't really get it done.
JD- what's the mets record previously in this 2 stadium double headers against the yankees?
SECOND GAME LINEUP FOR METS
SS Jose Reyes
2B Luis Castillo
3B David Wright
CF Carlos Beltran
1B Carlos Delgado
LF Trot Nixon
C Ramon Castro
RF Endy Chavez
RH Pedro Martinez
Steve: I would say of all the Mets, I am the hardest on Coin Flip Perez. I have been hard on Reyes, but I don't think unfairly so. When he was here, Willie Randolph wanted to sit Reyes, but had his legs cut out from under him by Minaya and Wilpon.-JD
There's a new poll up on interleague play. Please vote.-JD
Huge ovation for Delgado. Deserved.-JD
This is the third time Mets-Yankees have done this. Yankees swept in 2000 (winning 4-2 and 4-2). Yankees swept in 2003 (winning 7-1 at home and 9-8 at Shea).-JD
If Delgado pops out with the bases loaded in the first, I bet they still boo…
I thought A-Rod had that one off the bat
Kevin: You're so negative. You were also right. There were a few boos after that groundout.-JD
I can't believe they actually booed Delgado…
I don't agree with it, it's pretty sad really
That stache makes Ron Jeremy jealous…
Horrendous at bat by Reyes..
Thanks Josh. You beat me to it. Bases loaded, no outs and they get nothing.-JD
How many times do I have to see Jose swing at the first pitch and pop out, crucial at bat, what a hack.
I've been waiting for the mets for a while now to finally win a game that will place them a game over .500. I really feel like once they reach that plateau they will get going. I am still waiting, could this be the night?
It was nice to see delgado hit and drive in all those runs in the first game but lets be realistic. It was against career minor league pitchers who have no business pitching in the major league.
JD:
Everyone talks about the erosion of Delgado's skill primarily in terms of batspeed, and the lack there of forcing him to cheat and get himself out on junk in the dirt that he is banking on being fastballs. But from watching him line these balls foul down the right field line, it seems like he is plenty quick. Do you agree with this prognosis or is there something else that has been plaguing him all season?
Hi John
That did not work out to well.
Not good leaving the Yankees in the game.
Did not see the first game.
What was you opinion of Pelfey's start.
The box score was not very impressive.
Happy to see they finally hit a grand slam.
How long has it been ?
This obese waste should be out of the game already, instead, we haven't even scored off of him yet…
I see the Mets are back to normal, 7 men left on base in three innings. If this team could hit consistently they would be up 5-0. This team should be called the New York doctor jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Lead off walk usually scores, unless your the mets.
Well, at least pedro looks good the first three innings like he did in Colorado, unfortunately this game takes 9 innings.
ok, the Mets had the bases loaded and nobody out and got a big
fat zero to show for it. the Yankees got the bases loaded and nobody out. How many runs do you think the Yankees will score?
I say the yankees will score three runs.
To Scott: Pelfrey wasn't sharp, but the flip side was it could have been worse for him. He was lucky to get the win, but that makes up for those he lost but should have won. ... Delgado's first-game slam was the Mets' first since David Wright in 2006 at Colorado.-JD
Hey, I'm impressed, I was wrong, they only gave up two runs, maybe there is hope after all in met land. One can only hope.
I say two
now, now kevin, I think you cheated. The idea is to predict the outcome before it happens.
I hope i am wrong but this game has the vibe that it's just not the mets game to win tonight, especially that if they win it would place them one game above .500. That seems to be a disease for the mets.
I did not cheat, I just retroactively put in my prediction.
Kevin, I see, than give me your prediction of tonight's game outcome between the Mets and Yankees. I want it now, not when it ends.
well, it doesn't matter because this championship team according to Omar Minaya will lose tonight and again be under .500. The sad part is the Wilpons believe in Omar Minaya. That is a disaster waiting to happen. If you think the Nady trade was a disaster wait, Omar isn't finished destroying the Mets. Omar has a plan that will kill the mets for years to come, just wait, you'll see.
agee20- the wilpons BELIEVE in omar, not believED. they will happily endorse him until this team is eliminated from playoff contention, and then guess what! THEY'LL STILL SUPPORT HIM! omar is here long-term…whether we like it or not.
and does anyone else think that pedro martinez is over-rated, old, past his prime, injury prone, and in no way deserving of a spot on our starting rotation?
He certainly isn't number 2 caliber anymore
Agee, what the hell are you saying. I said believe. Please read before you post.
Did you see Cano grimace when the Shea fans booed Castillo after that groundout. Even the other players know how awful that is.
He did trot down the line like he was waiting to get on a carnival ride
The met fans should be booing Omar minaya, not the scrubs he brought in to play for the mets.
Wow another tough crowd tonight. The Mets win by 10 and are only down by 4 to Ponson and you guys are down on them again already? Way to show a little faith.
clm,
seriously, enough of this crowd is ruff, I can't blog here anymore because it's to negative. wake up man, this team sucks. This is the third highest payroll team in baseball and this team truly stinks. Enough of your, I'm being positive crap. wake up man, Omar Minaya has done a horrible job. this is highway robbery of the Wilpon's money and they are to stupid to realize it.
Hey I'm not gloom and doom, I just said Castillo didn't bust it down the line.
Agee20 I am awake and baseball is a game that you don't seem to enjoy very much.
Kevin – wasn't talking to you about that.
Fred is good business man when it comes to Real Estate but when it comes to owning a baseball team he is as dumb as an A@@!!!
John- What's the deal with Pedro? Are we expecting too much from him, or is he still not in top shape? All these walks are murder. Are we going to see him get better as things roll along, or am I dreaming?
Paul
I enjoy baseball when my team plays the game the way I used to play when i was in the Mickey mantle league. Obviously you didn't play baseball. This is New york and when you have the third highest payroll in the sport you expect much more than this, that I can tell you.
Agee20 – You made your point. Now you are just instigating for no apparent reason. In fact I could say when it comes to your chosen field you are good but when it comes to real intelligent blogging and constructive criticism you are as dumb as an A@@!!! But I won't go there because I am too busy sleeping in a positive manner.
Why does Gary keep saying "it wasn't like he was hit hard tonight", like that changes anything… "it isn't like Yadier Molina is a good player", Oh well, I feel even better he singlehandedly knocked the mets out of the playoffs.
paulunde,
Pedro is coming off major surgery in his middle thirties. There isn't much to expect here, it is what it is, he is near the end of his career. I would not resign him next year. Why don't you think the red Sox let him walk. it's because they new he was done. The red sox have gone on to win another world series.
And maybe they should sign someone with you heart and talent. I mean when you are a star in the Mickey Mouse league it certainly gives you every right to criticize the major leaguers.
CLM,
seriously, what does that mean, really, is that some sort of come back, that is weak man, really weak.
Hey, brother clm…..
I must say you proved yourself a true gentleman the other week.
Oh, I'm sorry CLM, did I miss something here that the Mets with a 140 mil payroll is a good team, dude, you need to wake up. This team blows. i am very passionate with the teams i am a fan of and if you think this team is good than you are blind man.
I was out of line. Thanks guv!!!
clm, you were out of line but i'm not getting baited in a blog brawl because it's just stupid and immature to do.
Agee20 you are arguing things I never said. I hope they prove themsleves to be a good team and I enjoy watching baseball and love the Mets. Don't see how tearing down people, no matter what they do for a living accomplishes. If it makes you feel like a passionate fan have at it. I think it just makes for worse discourse on the blog and doesn't add anything other than you know how to curse with funny little symbols.
But as a fan of free speach have at it. And I will criticize it if I like.
Since I don't get to see more than a game or two a month of the Mets on TV, I am really appreciative when I do. Tonight, watching and listening to Gary, Keith and Ron is such a pleasure – guys who really know the game and the English language, not many broadcasters are so erudite (except Scully).
I'm also taking in what Shea looks like these days, and remembering the great times I had there.
Baseball is intent on moving away from the average fan and that makes me doubly grateful to have had the experiences I had when it was so much more fan friendly.
I'm also glad to see Pedro – win or lose.
John – how many miles is it from Yankee Stadium to Shea? I understand that Sam Borden walked that route for charity today.
Vin Scully was and is a fantastic broadcaster. He and Joe G. (sorry cannot spell it) were fantastic in the '86 WS.
Yanks going to pen. Their pen is atrocious. Except for the game's best closer. There is hope.
My question is: Why didnt Omar sign Ponson? The guy obviously has a major league arm. Oh, yeah he has a bad rep, he got into a DUI or something. Its good that Omar found vargas for us. Never mind.
CLM,
I am just telling it as it is, if you don't like what i say than it is your problem not mine. I never once came back at you even though i didn't agree in what you said and i still think you talk like you take it personal which is kind of odd. Do you live in San Fransisco?
What I find funny is all winter long many here ripped the Mets for not spending money. The line Freddy Coupons was mentioned many times.
Look having alot of money to spend helps but it is always a gamble to spend long term on old players. You just never know when they are going to lose it.
Delgado is a good example 2006 was very good, but I bet not many thought he would go down hill so fast. I think most of us thought Alou would play at least 80 games this did not happen.
Except for Castillo how many bad contracts will the Mets have next year. I do not see any.
Omar took over a very very bad team in 2005 and nearly got them to the World Series in 2006. The future is alot better now than the end of 2004 ( the last year of Howe )
sorry for the long post
For the record I love constructive criticism of the team. I love the debate of this guy is good or bad and here's why. I don't mind someone pointing out Minaya's mistakes or the OP is and up and down pitcher. Or I'd rather have this guy or that guy or whatever.
I do not like this one or that one sucks. This one is a scrub. Wilpon is an A@@!!! or on and on. Why? Not 'cause I am a prude. 'Cause I really aint. But because it is not enlightening and doesn't do anything but start arguements and we just never get into a good debate anymore.
Agree? Disagree? But a good passionate debate is much better than name calling any day. My 2 Cents. OK?
Ponson is a bad guy. If I wanted the Mets to sign a bad guy I would much rather sign Bonds. We really do need A LF.
CLM,
peace brother, I now understand, no hard feelings. I still think that Omar Minaya has done a bad job, 140 mil for a sub .500 team. It is what it is, I tell it like I see it.
I would agree Scott from Pelham if the team was like Boston and had a bunch of kids you were excited about. But we don't. We have a 19 year old who is seemingly following in Alou's tradition, not of getting hitsd but in being hurt all the time. two maybe first baseman and 3rd baseman who has to learn another position, maybe one pitcher in AA. so minaya is going to go on another buying spree? He improved the team yeah, but he built it for 2006, not for 2006 thru a long time.
Annie, to answer your post on baseball catering to the rich. That is mostly a New York phenomenon. In Arizona, where I live, they were selling dollar tickets until two years ago. There are still lots of available seats here. I scalped a playoff ticket in the bleachers for $20 last year.
NY teams have too many corporate customers who will pay big bucks.
Agee20 – You sound like Ruch Limbaugh. You tell it like it is? You tell it like you see it, not like it is, just your opinion just like mine.
I am from Poughkeepsie, NY, played baseball as a kid, grew up a Mets fan since 1969, moved to Raleigh, NC and follow them year in and year out from here. Love to love them when they are good and criticize them when they aint. But never in the manner I see here so much.
San Francisco? Don't even know what that means. But I guess you aint psychic cause it's the wrong coast. Take it personal. Not really. Just having fun, in reality.
The problem with a blog is that everything is delayed. So peace back.
Boy, am I glad I didnt gloat over game one to my yankee friends. This is painful. I am losing faith in Pedro now.
And really Rush Limbaugh was out of line. That is worse than calling Wilpon an A@@!!! Don't you think? And I agree that Omar has made some really bad moves. But he's made some good ones too. I think he does a lot better w/FA talent than in evaluating the minors. I could go on and on about the people he traded away.
CLM, did you ever pick your feet in Poughkeepsie?
Ray – Should have gloated when you could and then not answered the phone.
Ah Ray – A fan of the French Connection, huh? I guess I probably did.
Guv: you have a point
The question is would you try to sign Bonds or just cut Delgado and bring up Carp.
Carp most likely would look really bad at teams but maybe he would give this team a shot of energy.
The tricky part is would some of the other guys just pack it in if the Mets become sellers at the trade deadline.
I was wondering if you would get it. I will never forget that line from the classic movie.
CLM,
it sounds like your my age. How old were you when you played ball. I was 16 years old when i made the mickey mantle league. The age in that league was 17-19. I was a center fielder. I was a good ball player but lost interest as I got older. I'm sorry if you don't like my post but i am extremely disappointed in this franchise. I don't see it getting better with Omar Minaya as our GM, just my opinion. I don't see this team making the playoffs either and with a 140 mil payroll that is a crime.
Great movie. Gene Hackman is one of my all time favorites. I loved it when they tore that car to pieces.
btw on F-Mart he could be another Alex Escobar or just like Reyes get past his injuries and become a really good player.
My hope is that Omar does not go on a buying spree but holds tight this off season and gets lucky the way he did with Santana.
Would I sign Bonds???? Not in 2008. Would I cut Delgado. I would hold Delgado looking foir a trade if anyone lost DH or 1st baseman until desdline. If e's still here then, bye bye. Evans would be here now, spelling Delgado and playing some OF. Seeing these washed up guys in the O is sickening. Evans got 20 some ABs. He wasn't any worse than Nixon. I'd just DFA Perez nowand bring up Niese and ive him the next 3 months to learn under our new pitching coach. At least that way you'd have a clue if these guys can make it or do you have to buy everywhere. But its a fantasy. 3-4 games out despite mediocre play the entire year will lead to the fantasy that we are good. Well, maybe its '73 again and you only have to play good for for one month to win. Who knows.
Unless Pedro can right himself, a "healthy" Pedro is going to make every fifth game a long day for the rest of the season.
Pedro is done, like the MeTs, you can put that in the books!!!!
It could be 73 again, but I beleive the next 10 games will make or break this season. 2 more with the Yankees , 4 with the Cards and 4 with the Phils.
clm,
I just watched unforgiven the other day, Another great Hackman performance. Who could ever forget his encounter with english bob?
Another view of Delgado laughing and having a good time during a blowout. Sorry, I dont care about your big day against bum pitching, you gotta go smellgado. I cant take it anymore. you are a loser, and you stink is permeating this team.
I see Ryan Church played six innings for Brooklyn tonight and struck out twice. I wonder if we will see him before the Mets end the home stand.
Ray Sadecki, Delgado is a dog, the Mets are going nowhere thanks to Minaya.
Scott from Pelham- this isn't 73 again all though wishfull thinking. The Phils will win the division only because the mets stink, no other reason.
The only drama now, can our heroes avoid the shutout against the putrid Igawa?
I guess not, the teasing continues. Disgusting.
that was a despicable showing, willie is laughing somewhere…
This game is mercilously over. I think that Manuel is partially correct. Delgado is an enigma, but, rest of the Mets are that as well.
My fear is that we'll never truly appreciate Gene Hackman until he's dead…and then, it will be too late.
Once again, Ponson has qualtity arm. Why didnt Omar take a chance on him? Waiver pickups go by last years standings, that means the Mets had a chance and passed. Buy we pick up garbage like Nixon and Phillips. Omar, you made one good deal to get Maine. Now the perez trade looks like a disaster. Pedros signing is not looking so great either. Omar, My support of you is over. I now join the guv bandwagon. FIRE OMAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My fear is the mets will never win another world series until we are all dead, maybe or maybe never.
Ray Sadecki,
thank you, I agree, fire Omar which I've been saying before TheGuvlovestheMets but with a different blog name!!!!
Fire Omar!!!!
Agee, Good point, bro. Look, If Pedro is finished, then so is the season. Right now it aint looking too good.
Mets have to win the next two. Santana needs a win and Perez has to bounce back.
I can't believe some are bashing Minaya for the Santana trade; 99% of the fanbase would've murdered Minaya if he didn't make that trade…
And despite this absolutely abysmal shutout loss, it's not all bad news… We actually gained a half game because of the day win, and the Phils lost(again) to an AL team…
Oh, and Fatty McGriddles Ponson is getting seriously lucky. His WHIP entering this start was 1.56, and that probably increased today… He'll eventually revert back to garbage..
The only problem is the Wilpons think Omar has done a good job. Why, because they are clueless owners. It's been reported that the Wilpons like Omar Minaya, God help us met fans. Watch, another brutal trade is coming up for the great Omar Minaya. This franchise is in deep trouble. I am starting to think that Omar Minaya is related to Isaiah Thomas, God help us all.
Agee, While I agree with you about Omar the tentmaker, It would be nice if we kept the same name, How do I know what you posted before?
sorry Ray Sadecki,
it is me, I said i wouldn't post here anymore and i didn't, of course under my name tomg. Omar Minaya is ruining this franchise. I am convinced.
Josh, I dont see anybody complaining about the Santana trade, with the possible exception of the guy who runs this site. Thats not the point anyway, Its easy to make deals when you have unlimited millions behind you ala Pedro, Beltran, Yes, Delgado, and Santana. The true pros are known by their steals of other teams talent. The only one I see is Possibly Maine right now. Thats after 3 1/2 years.
How many have been stolen from us under the tentmakers watch? Nady, Flores, and Bell are a few I can think of right away. I have had it, Already, Now its time for this guy to give an account.
tom,
Its Ok, Knew you werent going anywhere. thanks for fessing up.
To tomg: Ray makes a good point. Continuity is a wonderful thing. ... And, to Bob. You've been a pain in the butt, but your question deserves an answer. Email me your address and I'll give you one. Part of the problem is your 900 email address kept getting bounced back to me. Very annoying. .... ``Please, tell me why you delete my posts and i'll stop posting my comments with obscene comments in them. – bob …. Geez Bob, don't you think you answered your own question?-JD
I will give Omar Minaya Beltran and Maine and that's it. Other than that his rebuilding the farm system and trades have been down right brutal. To think he will be trading again near the trading deadline is down right scary.
Delgado ain't an enigma.
His batspeed is largely gone and 95% of his hitting was his quick hands… and here in the twilight of his career, he won't change his approach.
If you give him ample rest, if the rare occasion comes along to DH him, if a rest day comes along framed around no or little travel…
He rests up enough to get a lot of that batspeed back for a day or two… but Momma Injury and Father Time come back for that batspeed after those days and…
He's an old injured guy trying to swing like a slugger in his prime again.
Hot day game, lefthandedhitter's park, crappy starter, DH, ample rest… a perfect storm for one good game outta the guy.
Problem is, it'll probably make him KEEP swinging like he's ten years younger and we'll end up the worse for that one good game.
Not an enigma at all. Just another player at the end of his career who can't admit he's done if no one will force the realization on him.
JD,
in all fairness i didn't think I did anything wrong. i wasn't nasty towards anyone on this blog, just having fun, speaking my mind.
John,
Can you ask Omar why he didnt give ponson a shot. He is obviously more talented than many who he has chosen as pitchers off the waiver wire?
Ray Sadecki,
I thought the same thing today when I was watching Poson throw 93-94 consistently and getting the crucial out when needed. That proves to me Omar is clueless.
Tomg,
Just keep your name, Unfortunately, we both gave our allegiance to the Mets a long time ago, and now its too late. I live in a town with a good young team with a stacked minor league system and smart management, and I continue to pay money to watch these patetic losers. Its too late man, Its in the blood. Just admit it.
I heard this on a cop's radio at the end of the game: ``The Parks Department is reporting three seats were taken from the upper deck. Be on the lookout for people trying to take seats out of the ballpark.’’-JD
JD, You just gave me a nice belly laugh. Thats New York for ya. God Bless.
Why do you guys want Ponson on this team so badly.
The dude is a real bad person.
As I said earlier if you want a bad person on this team then get the best, get Bonds. He also plays LF. I think this team needs a outfielder more than a back of the rotation starter.
Ray you keep talkin bout the D Backs.
How many games over 500 are they ?
Well try 0
They have lots of talent but it does not show in the standings.
Maybe they should fire their manager.
I like that Fire Omar line….. tomg keep posting your frustrations. They represent the feelings of the Met fans who haven't drunk the Minaya kool-aide and watch with eyes wide open.
I wouldn't take Bonds in a million years either but… I agree. The Mets glaring lack is not so much in the starting pitching as it is…
In left field… and right field… and at first base… and at second base… and at catcher.
After you fill those five black holes in the line-up, y'know, go wild on the pitching.
Scott,
Thats a great question,
Bad boy Ponson Vs. Bad Boy Bonds. I like it.
Ponson is a pitcher. Pitchers are in much more demand than left fielders last time I checked.
Ponson isnt connected with a federal investigation, about steroids, where Bonds trainer, after taking the fall for him in federal prison is ready to spill all the nasty beans at last.
I could go on but thats more than enough. Barry Boy will still be sitting in a cell with a very long number instead of a name.
Look fire Omar, don't fire Omar.
The truth is it really does not matter who runs the show unless you give them 5 or 6 years to rebuild the whole team top to bottom.
Do you really think Met fans will tolerate a 5 year top to bottom rebuilding plan.
I think not, after a couple of years the media will constantly complain and then the Mets will overspend in the free agent market.
This will start the cycle all over again.
Tom g: Look at the NY Rangers Sather spent crazy for years and got nowhere. Now he built a core group and the Rangers have turned the corner.
This is Omar's 4th year. Not enough time to fix the farm system. Most GM's will tell you it takes 5 years to evaluate a draft. Omar's first draft was 2005. Tell me in the spring of 2010 how good or bad it was.
Scott,
I would indeed be remiss to answer the other part of your question, Why do I compare the dbacks to the mets favorably.
Its easy, most of thier players are homegrown and they play like they give a sheet.
Ray: Ponson did beat up a Judge in his home country of Aruba. That to me is a really bad person.
Give me Bonds tomorrow, the Mets really do need a left fielder. If the Mets need to go all in this year then Bonds is the man.
Maybe this judge needed a smack. Are all Judges God? Have you ever dealt with a godlike judge? especially in a 3rd world country? have you ever seen corruption on that scale? We dont know the answer. We all know about Bonds dont we? without his little helpers, he would get worse treatment than Delgado from the Shea faithful.
Ray you are right the D backs play like they care, but they do have one thing similar to the Mets. Two of their highest paid players are having lousy years. ( Johnson and Byrnes ) Just goes to show you the Mets are not the only team that spends money badly.
You all may think I am an Omar apologist. I just think they need some stability in the front office. Changing GM's every 4 years leads to more disfunction. It always seems as you are starting over.
The Mets were a complete disaster when Omar took over.
Many of the problems still exist. Maybe Omar is not the guy but I think he deserves at least till the end of next year.
Ray all I am saying is Bonds could help this team.
As for Ponson he was driving his boat and was drunk at the time he beat up the person who he later found out was a Judge.
Please don't get me started on Judges and Lawyers.
You do not have to go to a third world country to see
corruption and payoffs. NY and NJ have more than any banana republic.
Ray its late here in NY so I will catch up to you during the week. I think we both just wish the Mets were better this year.
I believe Theo Epstein only has one year left on his contract. He would be great to have as GM. I guess if I gotta wish, than its best to wish big.
