Who has a better shot at October?

The Yankees have a better record, but the Mets are closer to first place. Both teams still have issues to solve and teams it must leapfrog.
So, on the eve of Subway Series II, which team has a better chance of playing into October?

Sadly… of course, the Yankees have a much better chance of getting into the post-season. Is that even a question?
The Yankees have more than three guys who can hit, for one, and starting pitching that's going to continue to get better as the season goes on as opposed to standing pat at best.
But moreover… the wild card is going to be in play for an AL East team whereas the wild card is NOT going to be in play for an NL East team.
There are two playoff spots coming out of the NL Central, it's just a matter of who is getting them… whereas all the Yankees need to do is hop over either Boston OR Tampa Bay to get into the post-season.
The Mets have to win the NL East to get to the post-season and… the story of the NL East is that everyone is horribly flawed and in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
And in the NL East, the Phillies can at least mash, while the Mets, Marlins, Braves and Nationals can't perform consistently in ANY aspect of the game.
I mean, I doubt the Yankees will make it… but their odds are much better. I also doubt that a one-dimensional team like the Phillies would make it out of the NLDS either but… if simply making the post-season is a victory, someone has to advance out of the NL East.
Anyway.
Sunday's the halfway point, the Mets are under .500, the "calvary" that are coming are… a legendarily fragile Moises Alou and a twice-concussed Ryan Church, for heaven's sakes… and we're talking playoffs?
Playoffs? PLAYOFFS?!
Nonono. Just because the Phils are going through a slump and it is creating the illusion of an opportunity to take this division?
Guys. Guys and a few girls, seriously.
The Mets couldn't take two from the MARINERS.
Lets not drive ourselves crazy with false hope.

Mike C. – what are you drinking? the wild card is definately in play for the Metsies if they can just get 5 games above .500 and continue from there. The Phillies can mash, but have no starting pitching past their #2. And their bullpen has been doing it with "smoke & mirrors" for closr to 1 year. As for the NL Central, you truly believe that the Cardinals and Brewers will hold up? with what? Listen, the Mets are very inconsistent, but if they can get a streak going and keep their head above water, they've got a shot…these next 12 days will tell us a lot….
Again, the Brewers and the Cards better than the Mets, I don't think so IMO.
October?
You're talking October when these teams are barely making it through June?
I'm not even sure who will win Subway Series II – are you?
If I must, I'll say the Yankees will be playing in October, but I'm not betting on it.

You're much more succinct than I am, of course, but we basically agree.
The Mets have to start playing better than mediocre before there's any point in talking October and… they aren't. They're almost LITERALLY mediocre. They're slightly LESS than mediocre, right now.
This can't be a serious question. No Mets fan likes to admit it, but guys like Jeter and Posada just know how to get it DONE. And that Rivera guy ain't bad either.
I still have hope for the blue and orange, faint as it may be.
I have paid almost zero attention to the yanks so i cant comment. Today we are still a game under 500. we still seem to have the same problems we have had for one year now.
as i said in the other thread, we have many problems. besides the pitching ( i thought we were in a good place, but pedro got hurt, el duque seems done , maine has been inconsistent and ollie, well i wont go there ). then there are the everyday players and we have nothing in lf/1b and 2b is forgettable at best.
so we can put out a legit 1-4 and then you struggle through 2 innings until your 1 comes up again. i dont count catcher because they are supposed to catch. so 1/3 of your lineup is a complete black hole +1 for the pitcher and +1 for catcher.
I dont want to hear castro because he is a bench player. nice for a game or two or even for a few in a row, but he has never stayed healthy and doesnt seem to have a plan behind the plate the way schneider does.
If you ever shop at Modells you would get the idea that NY
has three baseball teams not two. So my pick of the NY team with the best chance is the Boston Red Sox.
All joking aside, gotta sadly say the Yankees.
Until they do not make the post season you have to believe they will find a way to get in.
btw: if you do not believe me about Modells try shopping in the stores in the city. Many times way more Sox gear than Mets.
I think Boston and Tampa Bay are stronger teams than Philadelphia. As such, the Yanks could get their act together—and still finish third. For what it's worth, I think the Mets have an advantage over the Yanks in that they better control their own destiny. Whether they exercise that control is another story, of course.
If the Mets could figure out a way to beat the Phillies then they have a chance. Otherwise neither NY team will make it to the post season.
The traveling all star team needs to contend against one of if not the best team in MLB. The Rays have a more than capable starting bullpen, have some offense, and you cant discount the leadership of Uncle Floyd.
Yankees have a much better chance. They have players that know what they need to do to get the job done. Thier lineup is stronger. the pitching is a question mark, but so is the Mets. It seems if one or two players aren't hitting they have others to pick up the slack (as of late). I have yet to see that with the Mets. The only real advantage the Mets have is the yankees are competeing with much better teams to get into the playoffs.
If the Mets keep picking up talent like Andy Phillips and Trot Nixon, the question will become, will they have a better chance to catch the Nationals than they will have to catch the Phillies. As for the Yankees, except as a Met fan who always wishes bad on the Bronx bombers, why would I care and compare. After Sunday the Yankees are irrelevant to the Mets' future.
