5:25 – Update – Omar Minaya just talked in the dugout for 16 minutes and 37.4 seconds (kidding). He didn’t have too much to say that was different from Tuesday. He said he tabbed Manuel because he provided the smoothest transition from Willie Randolph, not because of his managing style. Omar admitted he didn’t know how Manuel would manage the team.
Interestingly, Minaya said he had a Plan B if Manuel, for whatever reason, had turned down the job. He then pulled back the bait, and wouldn’t say who Plan B was. Oh well.
Although Omar said Manuel is the interim manager, he added: “Mt hope is we win the World Series and Jerry manages here for many years.”
4:30 – Update – Ok, just returned to the clubhouse after a long and wide ranging 24-minute press conference with Jerry Manuel.
He tried to clarify his comments about fertile ground, saying that fertile ground “a positive thing.” Carlos Delgado said he talked about the potential the players have on this stage, and how they should use it as a positive.
On Castillo – Manuel said they will play him then evaluate how he feels after the game. He hopes Luis can play on a regular basis, but he said the club will rest him multiple times in a given week if it must do so to get peak performance out of the 2B. Interesting.
On Church – He will work with the team today. They will evaluate him, then decide how to proceed. Manuel said Church may play in Brooklyn either Wednesday or Thursday.
Josh Thomson in today for John.
Here are the guys designated to beat The King:
Castillo said he felt good enough to play when he woke up today.
ITs an absolute packed house today.
