Mets Chat Room: Denver revisited edition

June
20

Nobody with the Mets will say the franchise turned itself around when it replaced Willie Randolph with Jerry Manuel. However, there’s no mistaking the difference in mood from the last time the Mets were here Memorial Day weekend.

“That was another difficult moment,’’ Manuel said. “It was a tough time for Willie. We weren’t playing well.’’
The Mets had just been swept in a four-game series at Atlanta, which was the backdrop from Randolph’s apology to ownership for his comments criticism of him was racially motivated. General manager Omar Minaya flew in for the first game of the series to give Randolph a lukewarm vote of confidence and said the apology ended the matter.

However, this week Minaya admitted those comments created an atmosphere of tension that never fully dissipated after Randolph’s meeting with the Wilpons when the team returned to New York.

The Mets are still a .500 team, but there’s a feeling a cloud has lifted.

“I don’t want to say it’s a relief,’’ David Wright said when asked to recall the club’s first Denver trip. “Everybody feels for Willie, but not having that distraction is a positive thing. … The front office had to make a decision sooner or later.’’

PREGAME NOTES:  Manuel refuted a published report (Post) that accused him of working to undermine Randolph to the front office. Manuel said he’s been on the phone several times with Randolph and considers him a friend. … Ryan Church, on the disabled list with post-concussion syndrome, will begin working out with the team when it returns to New York. After several days the plan is for him to play several rehab games for Single-A Brooklyn. … Moises Alou, on the disabled list with a strained left calf muscle, has begun some light jogging. Manuel said he would handle Alou conservatively when he returns. “I want to get that bat in the lineup,’’ Manuel said. … Damion Easley was at second base last night for the second straight game. “He hit a game-winning home run,’’ said Manuel, who will reward his bench players with more playing time. “You have to perform.’’

Maine off to another swimming start…

Let’s hope this game gets rained out…

  2. JM

Too early to panic, but the Mets cannot score off Cook it seems.

  3. Josh

Aaron Cook career vs NYM: 42 innings, 7 games, 5 starts, 2.14 ERA

    He completely owns us…

  4. JM

Well, Josh, it’s like that haha.

  5. Josh

And just as I say that, Delgado ties the game..

  6. John Delcos

Mets took early BP today and Delgado was working on going to left field. Very windy today and a couple of balls have already flown out.-JD

  7. bob

I can see why trot nixon was a minor leaguer….

  8. bob

oh yeah and today some1 said they should release delgado and said HAH! like edna krapabbpel!

btw any1 think if willie was the manager this woula been a quick 1-2-3 inning AND NICE

BTW AM I THE ONLY ONE WHOS SNY HAS THE WEATHER CHANNEL ON BEHIND IT? ITS DRIVNG ME CRAZYYYYYYY I WANNA SOCK THEM THE WRONG WAY LIKE WTH I CAN NOT TAKE IT!

  9. JM

Been a rough week at work, think I’ll have some whatever bob is having.

  10. John Delcos

In case you were wondering, that was the first time the Mets have batted around since June 3.-JD

  11. Kevin

Jerry Manuel managed their bats to hit the ball… well done JM

  12. JM

    Masterful managing!

  13. bob

I am serious. MY SNY has the mets on but ALSO in the backround, the weather channel is on, its disturbing ill uplaod a vid of it soon

  14. Josh

    TROT!!

  15. John Delcos

And Bob’s minor leaguer goes deep.-JD

  16. Tiffany

He’s not quite the player his brother Troy is…

  17. bob

JD – What did you think I was talking about? I was obviously saying how he just shows a love for the game THATS why he was in the minors ;)

  18. tomg

    Wow,

I will be the first to admit the Mets look like a totally
different baseball team. It is starting to look like that Randolph lost this team at the end of last year. I am starting to think the Mets could get back into the race for the wild card and even the division, Lets Go Mets!!!!!!
They are looking like a team with some passion, cool.

  19. John Delcos

    Bob: Just tweaking you.-JD

  20. bob

LOOK THIS IS WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx-dVVNPQoI

  21. JM

    tomg,

I want to believe that, too. But it’s been 2 1/3 games since Manuel took over. They’ve done this before, so I need to see quite a bit more. Like knocking the snot outta Colorado and Seattle next week would be a start.

  22. Ray Sadecki

Changing the manager usually rejuvinates a team. Sometimes its for a short while, and sometimes it turns a season around. There has definitely been a weight lifted off their shoulders.

  23. JM

As much as I don’t believe Willie was the cause of all their troubles, in the wake of his dismissal it’s really come to light that most of the players were indifferent to him at best. That’s a problem.

And Endy can flat out play when he gets a chance.

  24. Kevin

That was a helluva catch by one mr chavez

  25. JM

Why can’t John Maine throw strikes? When he gets an out he needs 12 pitches. You do not want to see a lot of the Met bullpen at this launching pad . . .

  26. bob

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx-dVVNPQoI

JD – thats my tv, i have no idea y thats happened, any ideas? the only think i can think of is somehow gil from savannah did something, hes always been out to get me BUT BOB WON STAND FOR IT!!

  27. JM

    Christopher Trotman Nixon.

  28. John Delcos

To Kevin: And another one by Troy Nixon’s brother Trot.-JD

  29. JM

Anyone ever see the show with Ted Danson, “Becker?” There was this character named Bob who always talked in the 3rd person. You tell ‘em Bob!

  30. bob

    BOB LIKES HIS CHICKEN SPICY!

  31. bob

jd – you cant answer me eh? WHICH SIDE R U ON?

  32. bob

OHHHHHH WHAT A BIG MAN U AAAAAAAAAREEE! HERE ILL GIV U A PACKA GUM ILL HELPA CHEWIT! DONT IGNORE THE BOB!

  33. Kevin

Bob, the weather channel drowning out the mets game is still better than listen to the Rockie’s color guy continue to call John Maine a sinker ball pitcher.

  34. John Delcos

Bob: Side? What are my options?-JD

  35. bob

Kev dog – No it is not! not when u finally deal with it and it gets drained out and randomly some1 says “Hello, its bob your meteorologist) I had to turn on the radio and listen to that yag wayne hagin

  36. Josh

    What’s wrong with Maine??

  37. JM

It’s amazing how awful and uninformed some announcers are. I heard one of the Padres’ guys the other week, after Delgado popped out with men on base, “What a big out because that guy is a monster.” It’s like some of them don’t follow baseball. Makes you feel lucky to have GRK (Gary, Ron, and Keith).

  38. Ray Sadecki

This will keep me up all night now, Is it Bob Dole or is it Sloppy?

  39. Kevin

Haha, Maine will be talking crap to Big Pelf and Ollie with that rip up the middle

  40. bob

    jd – ur options are

    #1 side with the BOB

#2 dont side with the bob and get well acquainted to BOBS FISTS OF FURY!

  41. JM

Ray, I think it’s just Bob.

  42. bob

wayne hagin single handedly mauled wfan with some weird impression right there. he spoke in a southern drawl something along the lines of “oh mai gawsh, heas owt aaat fiwrst” when he “called” the last out my gosh i despise him. id love to sock him the wrong way, WATCH OUT FOR THE BOB!

  43. Kevin

Bob is your full name Robert Paulson?

  44. Kevin

    JM:

I remember a play in particular when there was runner obstruction and the announcers were completely baffled by why the runner was out. And I was like, where is Gary, he would instantly tell me what exactly is happening?.

  45. bob

i go by bob, my name is bob, so just call me bob. I am not allowed to tell people my full name, JD wisely told me not to awhile back.

  46. JM

Throw Maine back out for the 7th I hope.

  47. bob

HEY REGARDLESS, WHO ARE YOU ASK ME WHAT MY FULL NAME IS? FOR ALL I KNOW YOU WANT TO GET MY NAME AND COME TO MY HOUSE. SURE I LOVE GETTIN IN A FEW SCUFFLES EVERY WEEK WHERE WE CAN TOSS SOME PUNCHES AROUND AND SOME TEETH/BLOOD IS KNOCKED OUT BUT I DONT WANT U COMIN ROUND MY HOUSE THO DONT MESS WIT THE BOB, LOOK OUT FOR THE BOB DONT MESS WITH BOB!

  48. Kevin

You obviously have never seen fight club…

  49. JM

    Bob, we’re all friends here.

  50. ChiliGTC

    Can’t we all get along?

  51. John Delcos

Bob: It’s time to say goodnight.-JD

  52. tomg

    YOU GOTTA BELIEVE!!!!!!!!

I am starting to get the feel that this club has had a huge weight lifted off there backs.

    Tiffany,

you might have been right all along…..

  53. tomg

    Geez!!!!

Marlon look like he was swinging for the parking lot.

  54. tomg

Marlon is going to get a hit, i feel it baby!!!!!

  55. tomg

I see reyes getting at least one run in here, Lets Go Mets!!!!
    Willie Who?????

  56. tomg

Grand slam, do i here Grand slam, Jose reyes!!!!!!

  57. tomg

    Wow,
is Shneider the slowest runner anybody has ever seen, geez!!!!!

  58. tomg

Philly lost, Mets could be 4 and 1/2 games out from first. I feel the negative force changing to the positive force, Let Go Mets!!!!

  59. Kevin

It was terrible baserunning he should have been halfway, not worrying about tagging up if it was caught.

  60. tomg

Great double play, who are these guys!!!!!

Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance kid, who are these guys!!!!!

  61. Kevin

They do seem energized, they’ve played great Defense all night.

  62. tomg

I am watching a team here who looks like there are having fun, especially in the dug out. Anybody notice Wright looking like Big Bird and reyes laughing.

    Unbelievable, keep it going Mets.

    lets go mets!!!!!

  63. Kevin

Rockies announcer “Instead of Wagner the Mets turn to a guy who has been very reliable for them this year, Aaron Heilman”

  64. tomg

    What a play by wright!!!!!

saving a double down the line. Pinch me, is this the 2008 mets. I love what i see.

  65. Kevin

I guess you can be reliably bad… You can rely on a guy giving up a three run homer if he has two inheritted runners on…

  66. tomg

    I do believe!!!!!!

I really do believe for the first time this year.

    Let go Mets!!!!

  67. Ray Sadecki

Tom G., Ralphie boy says welcome to the club!! And dont give tiffany all the credit, I said Willie had to go too.

  68. John T

Wow, was Beltran smiling? Who are these guys?!

  69. Ray Sadecki

This team can rock when its right.

  70. Ray Sadecki

I mean when Its wright. Colorado announcers report that David has the second most HRs per Ab with this many ABs except for straw. And What a glove!!

  71. tomg

I will totally believe in this team if they win 20 out of the next 25 games!!!!!
