About Last Night

Jerry Manuel said the Mets were flat last night, and thinks part of the reason might be from the emotions of the past few weeks.
Still, there were three errors and don’t forget John Lackey.
The big thing that came out of the game was the Jose Reyes incident. Manuel would not accept having his authority challenged.
That’s a positive.

OT – but another positive event last night was – THE CELTICS – who beat the Lakers 131 to 92. How sweet for the hometown guys to really give it to the left coast invaders!!!
Yes, it was a positive. But if Reyes is out for any length of time, this season is over. The Mets aren’t good enough offensively like the Phillies were last year to overcome a loss of Jose. I would expect that he is sitting tonight though, no matter how healthy he might be..Call this a conspiracy theory, but I think a night off might be more due to Jose’s tantrum than his hammy.
Yeah, they were flat. Riiiiiigght!! Because this team is so unbelievabley awesome that there is no way one of the best pitchers in baseball could possible hold them to only one run unless the Mets were playing below their actual level. Oh yeah, 3 errors, must be something wrong with them. Please!! The smash that Kotchman hit to Delgado was a very tough chance. It bounced up and hit him in the forearm. The Easley not covering? Big deal, the guy hasn’t been playing a lot of SS lately. I think you can give him a pass on that one. I enjoyed the game. The Mets played hard. It was almost like they didn’t absolutely HAVE TO win. Now just get rid of Omar and we can start fresh and wipe the slate clean. Decent ballclub, we’re hopeful, but we DONT ASSUME we will win 92 games or something must be wrong.
Was firing Willie and replacing him with Manuel a change for the sake of change? I’ve heard Manuel is very similar to Randolph in many ways and I would have preferred to see someone with a more agressive style. I hope I’m wrong, but I think Manuel’s tenure as manager will be very short-lived.
I like the move by Manuel, and I am glad reyes came back and apologized to the whole team. He says he should be ok for tongiht.
Joe D.,
The manager never was the problem. It doesn’t matter who they bring in this roster has problems. They may still get some guys healthy and some other guys playing better and make the playoffs after all but it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MANAGER!
Santana at the Angels ballpark was also a problem. He was 1-2 with an ERA of 5 before the game and he certainly did not show any better last nite. I’d guess that might be his worst numbers at any ballpark.
Lackey has gone 7+ inn in every start this yr while allowing 2runs or less in every game except 1. If he keeps it up he just might win himself a CY.
Gary Cohen mentioned that Toronto was the 1 place where Santana had a higher ERA than Anaheim.
We got Ollie going against John Garland tonight. Let’s hope Ollie feels comfortable out there tonight. Should be a good entertaining ballgame. Now if they can just figure out a way to make the games shorter. I’m falling behind on all my chores because these games take so long. I’ve taken to DVRing them and starting to watch them about 30-45 mins in so that I can shorten the time by skipping all of the commercials.
Taylor,
I think that you are right in blaming some of the players but also Willie was at fault. There was a huge problem with the attitude of the club and the overall chemistry. Willie never put his foot down and squashed any drama or chatter. Manuel putting his foot down from day one was a good sign because he isnt going to take that garbage from Reyes. It is evident throughout Manuel’s career that although he is similar to Willie in certain respects, he is very different. Manuel handles things differently and you can see that if you think back to the botched HR call against the Yankees. Manuel stood up for his guy (Delgado) and he made sure he at least made a point. That is what the Mets need, they need someone they like and someone that supports them but is the boss at the same time. I really have a good feeling about Manuel, despite the loss last night.
Manuel getting tossed on the bad home run call gives me hope that he can give this club an example of leadership. He handled himself well at the press conference. He is going to challenge these guys to overcome thier 2007 collapse. He is going to rest his go to guys. Willie didnt even want to give Cliff Floyd a day off and by the playoffs in 06 he was done. Good Riddance to Willie Randolph.
JD, is there any truth to the rumor that bernazard would tell the players what willie said about them in private meetings? If this is true bernazard has to go. He is a cancer to this team. What exactly does he do anyway?
Also, JD, can you confirm that Tony Bernazard is one of the best-dressed, well-cologned men in the Met organization?
Tiffany: I can confirm that Tony Bernazard wears Armani suits and borrows his cologne from Pat Riley. Who the hell needs JD to confirm anything…
With due respect I just don’t agree. I don’t know what will happen with the Mets the rest of the year, but I don’t think that Willie Randolph’s attitude had much to do with their performance up to this point (or up to Monday to be more accurate). I think Willie was stern with Reyes and I think he was the boss. But more to my point, that stuff is overrated. How ever much the manager puts up with or doesn’t, in my opinion, has very little effect on things like whether Carlos Delgado can catch up with a 94mph fastball or whether Marlon Anderson can bat better than .190 or whether Moises Alou can play at all, or whether Aaron Heilman can keep his change-up down. The things that the Mets have needed in order to win more games have nothing to do with Willie Randolph’s attitude. Of course if the Mets do start winning more it will indeed be attributed to Manuel because people don’t like the idea of randomness, they don’t like to think that things they care about are largely due to luck (they are) and the media needs a good story line. So if the Mets start winning it will be the magic effect of Jerry Manuel’s new attitude, his take-no-stuff toughness, blah blah blah. I hope they do start winning but I’m not looking forward to that nonsense.
i’m thinking of changing my handle to glutton for punishment as yes, yet again, i’m about to make another trip to a ballpark to watch the mets in person.
thankfully la to anaheim is a little shorter than to san diego, but that won’t make the drive home any less depressing if they lose again.
which they have done in 5 of the 6 games i’ve been to this year. sigh.
C’mon Mets, Do it for Alex.
You know Alex if we can just get word of your predicament to the team I’m sure it will inspire them to victory.
Just win baby. A win tonight puts the Mets only 4 games back where it counts, the loss column.
Steve—I sat near Tony B. at a ballgame once. I’ll say this much: He’s a man who knows how to wear cologne. The scent just oozes off him.
Mike and the Maddog tried to press Minaya on Bernazard. He Said Tony was a very important advisor to him and that he is responsible for the farm system, and hes the guy bringing in all the talent from latin america. That should be enough of an indictment to get rid of this guy yesterday. But seriously. Who is the leaker? This goes way back to Art Howes days here.
i think it’s a good sign that manuel benched reyes, and yes, i said “benched,” and i agree with steve, the trip to the bench was because more because of his tantrum, not so much the injury.
The Mets handled it poorly but they may have gotten a better manager in Manuel. But the big problem is too many cooks stirring the broth. The Mets need a clear chain of command with defined roles.
I’m sure Jeff Wilpon (or one of his flunkies) does quite a bit of leaking. Is G Gordon Liddy available to find the culprit?
Gotcha Dan, Need a plumber to find a leak. Good one !
Ray: I usually don’t give M & MD much in the way of kudos, but I think they did a great job interviewing Minaya, especially Dog. If anyone gets a chance to go over to the WFAN website, they should have a listen.
