June
17

The Mets fired Willie Randolph, making the announcement two hours after beating the Angels, 9-6, tonight, and named Jerry Manuel interim manager.

Manuel is in his fourth season with the Mets and has been bench coach since 2006.

The Mets also named Ken Oberkfell, Luis Aguayo and Dan Warthen to the coaching staff and fired pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto.

GM Omar Minaya will have a press conference at 2:00 P.M. PT.

More to follow.

Firing him at 3 AM, one game into a west coast swing…disgusting.

To quote Hank Aaron in much happier times:

“I’m just thankful to God its all over.”

    Turn the page.

    Typical Mets.-JD

One game into a road trip? Do they pay their airfare back home?

Damn firing a dude right before his bedtime? Just ruthless… How’s does he get back home? Will he fly back with them? That has to be awkward…Too many unanswered questions.

Didn’t someone famous once said that they would rather be fired early in the morning because that way they had they rest of the day to do what they want? I guess not in this case.

Good news is that Willie is out in Calli..Torre might be able to use him. Even San Fran and San Diego could as well.. they both stink. Willie has to be better than what they have now.

Now why did they fire the first base coach? What did that guy do wrong? If any thing i would have thought Conti or Alomar were both gone, they both show that they suck as well.

    Who’s next?

I think it is going to get worse before it gets better.

Done in a lousy way, but it had to be done. time to move on

I can see why the Mets made a change but the timing is bad. On the other hand the Wilpons could have let this fester for another week. But as usual the culture of this team is wrong. They don’t hustle enough and the team is old. The former may be Randokph’s fault, the latter is definitely Minaya’s.

Well it’s a new day. Very surprised at the timing. Surprised it wasn’t just Willie.

Glad to see Peterson go. The pitching sucks and he did not seem to have a positive effect on the pitchers. OP sucks, Maine is languishing, Big Pelf has been toyed with, Sanchez is bad now, etc.

Let us see if a regime change makes them better. Let’s hope so.
