Who are you going to dump?

June
13

I understand the philosophy some of you have for blowing up this team and starting over.  At the trade deadline, depending on who they are dealing with, maybe they might be able to unload a player or two.

However, if the Mets are six or seven back, they will be thinking they still have a chance. And, with games left against Florida and Philly, they would be right.

But, seriously, if they become sellers, what do they have? Most of their older players have no-trade clauses and would be unable to trade.  Who do you want to get rid of?

delgado-carlos.jpg
-Carlos Delgado: Makes a lot of money, has an injury history, and is on a decline. I can see the line building now.

-Luis Castillo: With that contract? Who’s crazy enough to want that? Yeah, yeah, I know.

-Moises Alou: You must be joking.

-Billy Wagner: Would have to waive a no-trade clause. He’d be the one attracting the most interest. Baseball people know he doesn’t stink and this is just a bad stretch.

-Aaron Heilman: Would attract interest. Value is down.

-Carlos Beltran: His contract is reasonable by today’s standards. Doing so would be a sign of starting over and I don’t see Omar Minaya doing that.

    JD-

This team is not rebuilding…maybe someone like heilman but certainly not beltran or wagner..this team has a new expensive stadium opening up and that is in the mind of management for next year..as is winning of course, there not trading people like wagner, beltran, reyes, wright, santana.

  2. Tiffany

I agree with Dan. I think the two most likely moves are firing the manager and moving Delgado. Together, that would go a long way towards sanitizing things.

  3. ChiliGTC

    Here is my plan:

    1) fire Willie, Alomar, HoJo, and Peterson
    2) hire Manuel on an interim basis
    3) trade Wagner, Perez, Heilman, and Castillo (if possible)
    4) change my batting order to #1 Reyes, #2 Beltran, #3 Wright, #4/#5 Delgado or Alou (lefty/righty), #6 Church, #7 Schneider or Castro (lefty/righty), #8 2nd basemen unknown if we can trade Castillo.
    5) pray for rain…..

  4. John Delcos

Dan and Tiffany: Agreed. That's purpose behind the post. There is limited to no trade flexibility.-JD

  5. Mr Met

I don't think Castillo would be as hard to move as you think. The money shouldn't be an issue, because the Mets would obviously have to eat alot of it.

After this season, he is owed $18M for the next 3 years ($6M per year) if the Mets eat half ($9M) of that, I think several teams would be interested in having a guy like Castillo at a rate of $3M per year.

And the Mets wouldn't necessarily have to look at such a move as 'Eating Nine Million Dollars', because more importantly, they'd be saving Nine Million Dollars!! :)

  6. tomg

The only two players on the mets that might have value are Perez and Heilman. Like others mentioned Minaya is not going to blow up the team with a new stadium coming next year. The mets have more than just one problem. The obvious thing to do is to fire Willie just for the sake of making a change. If willie gets fired I strongly believe Peterson should go with Willie. Othe r than that there isn't much that can be done at this point.

    Hey John-

Although Delgado has improved slightly of late, I think we will be hard pressed to find a taker for him, unless we take a bad contract in return. I think that the most likely changes are…

    Willie out, Manuel in

    HoJo out, who in?

Peterson out, Mazzone or Warthen in.

I also think the return of Valentin will make Marlon or Easley expendable. But if Valentin cant come back as a player (currently 1-13 at AAA), I see him becoming a coach, as his word and attitude seem to carry a lot of weight in the clubhouse, much like Floyd's did.

Also Id like to see Perez, Duaner and/or Heilman take a trip to Mardi Gras, to make room for Tony Armas, who has been lights out in AAA.

  8. steve in NC

    PS:

Id also make a change at 3b and remove Alomar, Sr. He has been dreadful. Possibly move HoJo to 3b coach, as keeping him around would appease Wright.

Nieto and Conti stay, they've done nothing to deserve the axe…

  9. steve in NC

Also, Castillo is not too expensive, relative to the market, but keeping him at $6 mil each year over 4 (including this one) is a big risk. If there is a taker out there, I think you do it, as years 3 and 4 of the contract may be unbearable. Pay up to half and get a good prospect. If Havens is as good as they say, he may be our 2b in 3 years anyway.

    Mark Ellis (32)
    Orlando Hudson (31)
    Felipe Lopez (29)
    Aaron Miles (32)

are all Free Agents, plus others may be available on the trade market. Also, does Dan Murphy play 2b?

  10. kranepool

Might as well move Billy Wagner as he has the highest trade value and really what does a .500 to sub .500 teamneed with a top flight closer anyway?

  11. Stillsane

I would like to see them give Manuel the interim shot at manager, Warthen the picthing coach, and let Manuel pick his other coaches. As for players, I agree that dealing Delgado, if possible, would help to start the healing. I would also like to see coin flip get a change of scenery, if possible. Finally, since they are never going to give Heilman the starting shot that he want, trade him now even if he is devaluated.

  12. Stillsane

One more thing, isn't Marlon Anderson hitting about .150 right now? It is June already. Can't we find someone who at least is at or above the Mendoza line????

  13. Tiffany

Perez could have some trade value, but I think I'd rather get a draft pick than a mid-level minor leaguer.

The guy with the most value, if he's healthy [insert your own joke here] would be Alou. A proven, righty power-bat for a pennant race. Comes as is. Three-month commitment only.

As for Castillo, he's light years ahead of Miles, Lopez and Ellis. His .371 OBP is nothing to sneeze at.

  14. Stillsane

    Tiffany,

I agree with Perez, but, the other thing that has to be taken into consideration is that you have to hold him on major league roster for the rest of the year regardless of how Jekyl and Hyde he pitches. If he really starts to go south, it may be tough just to have him around. If I got a reasonable offer for him, I would even help him pack.

  15. The Coop

Believe it or not, the Mets could very well be sellers at the trading deadline – we have some valuable chips who aren't doing much and we can replace elsewhere via trade or in the minors. Only drawback is we could probably kiss the wild card goodbye. In any case, yes Beltran's contract is reasonable – if we can convince him to waive his NTC he could be gone. he hates NY anyway. Perez and heilman could EASILY be packaged in a trade for a masher corner OF/1B replacement to spell Delgado (providing he is NOT extended this year – i know, it's seems a foregone conclusion he will not be, but you never know with Omar – see: Castillo, Luis). Esp to a divisional front-runner who could use a 5th/back of rotation starter – ideally I would like reconvert Heilman into a starter, that just aint happening on the Mets, so let some other team reap the benefits of his filthiness. As for coaches I am not against firing wills, hojo or rp at this time but if they're gonna clean house CLEAN HOUSE. Fire everyone, and I mean everyone. Replace them with guys who give a crap in the minors for having a ML level job – and also if you have to "keep" someone it may as well be Manuel since he knows the team already but let it be known he will be manager on an "interim" basis meaning after this season is over, commence the manager search. then fire him (hee hee) the only untouchables I can see are Reyes and Wright.

  16. tomg

I do not think Manuel is the guy to replace Willie, I don't know who is out there at this point but Manuel is another laid back guy. I would not prefer Manuel.

  17. tomg

I do agree though if the Mets are going to fire Willie than they should get rid of Peterson.

  18. tomg

If Omar is shrewd enough near the trading dead line he might be able to find a team desperate enough to give up prospects
for some of the players mentioned. When teams feel they have a good shot at making the playoffs they might feel it's worth giving up some prospects to go for it if they feel the players the mets have can help them get there.. Anything is possible but it all depends also how the mets are playing at that time and where the mets are in the standings and if the Mets organization thinks the season is over at that point.

  19. Taylor

You always have to give up value to get value. Trades make sense when you have too much talent at a particular position to utilize and it is going to waste. The Mets are not deep at any position. They really don't have anything to gain through trading. They are stuck with this group.

  20. Ray Sadecki

If Perez and Delgado leave as FAs at the end of the year, we get draft picks, Better to wait a few more months. They will bring back little if we trade them. Heilman would really benefit from a change of scenery, I could just see him haunting us for years. He still has value, so if they can find a taker in the AL, I would see what I could get.

  21. Tiffany

Delgado has virtually no trade value and, because he has a buyout in his contract, won't likely be offered arbitration (i.e., no compensatory draft pick). As such, you deal him now for a bag of used baseballs, just to get the bad taste out of here.

Unload Delgado and change managers—and then cross your fingers and hope things turn around.

  22. Ray Sadecki

Tiffany, Your point is taken, but If Delgado goes, who plays first base? Marlon Anderson?

  23. Tiffany

    Trot Nixon.

  24. TheGuvlovestheMets

This fantasy about getting draft picks. You only get draft picks if 1. The guy signs with a team before the date to offer arbitration or 2. You offer the guy arbitration and then he signs elsewhere. OP isn't signing quickly since Boras is his agent, and Delgado isn't signing early since he's worthless and woould get much much more by agreeing to arbitration. You offer to either and they will be back next year. You don't offer, no pick.

Next thing you don't know until late July who the buyers are and what the needs are, so theoretically anybody could buy any Met if the needs were there. The Met system is so barren however, the Mets would almost have to trade position by position which is very hard since the buyer would have a need himself at that spot.
If I could trade, the first guy I'd trade would be Wagner because bad teams don't need a closer. Roberto Hernandez could close for all I'd care with a blown up team. Wagner might wave for a chance to ruin one more team. In my dream I'd keep Wright/Reyes/Maine/Santana and Joe Smith.

  25. Ray Sadecki

Trot Nixon, OK. Hes currently beating up on AAA pitching for the dbax. Who do we trade to the snakes to get him? and btw isnt he about the same age as Delgado?

  26. Tiffany

It's not about getting younger. It's about addition by subtraction.

  27. Dan Gurney

Are you allowed to trade a player like Castillo who is in the first year of a multi year contract? Isn't there a restriction against that in the Basic agreement? Or am I misinterpreting it?

Should the team think big and trade Reyes or Wright? I doubt it because your goal should be to acquire good young talent that is signed for several years. I would be interested in what would be offered for them. I don't think it has been done very often in baseball history. But I can't help thinking how the Dallas Cowboys won three Super Bowls by getting a king's ransom for Herschel Walker.

  28. John Delcos

You can trade a player with Castillo's contract, but he has the option to be a FA after the season. That makes it even harder. You are not hearing any rumors because it is early in the trade season and the Mets figure to be buyers.-JD

  29. Seaver

I don't understand why the new stadium has anything to do with blowing up this team. If this team is as bad as it is, keeping it together isn't going to help the new stadium be filled.

  30. Tiffany

I don't think Castillo would walk away from three years and $18 million to declare free agency; if he did, you'd take him out to the Gold Club to thank him.

  31. Ray Sadecki

Tiffany, Ok, Then who do the dacks want from us?

  32. Tiffany

For a 34-yr-old at AAA? They'd probably take a bus with no wheels.

  33. Ray Sadecki

Hmm…Very prescient Tiffany. Whats your secret?

  34. runnin rebel

    Fire Guy Conti

    Trade Heilman

Fire the Groundskeeper who maintains the bullpen..

    Fire the Bullpen Catcher

Hire John Franco as Bullpen coach.

Make the pay enormous fines for whomever gives up runs in from the BP.

    Fix that damn bullpen!!!!

    Start there.

  35. scoopcoop

If the Mets do anything I just hope it is not something dumb since they have a good history of doing really stupid moves.

Maybe that is why I say don't do anything. At least then nothing even worse would happen.

  36. scoopcoop

That Trot Nixon moves indicates to me that not only is Alou down and out but maybe Church is gonna be out for quite sometime.

  37. Tiffany

Actually, if you bring back John Franco, then he can give his comp tickets to the Gotti family—and then anything is possible for this team this year.

  38. Matt B in AZ

you can't get rid of everyone but here are the names i think are in the running- for position players: castillo, easly, and delgado.

For pitching- perez, wagner, heilman, feliciano…ok pretty much the entire bullpen except for vargas.

i'd start ike davis ASAP in place of Delgado, and whoever that other infielder was in place of castillo. and remember, i'm not saying you can make all these moves obviously, i'm just saying some of it would be a start. o yea and fire Willie, this team has no motivation. they should motivate themselves to an extent, but some of it falls on the manager, and that is one of the places where willie falls short.

and stop saying that it's still early. we're 2.5 months into the season, and in order to have a shot at the post season we're gonna have to post about a 66-32 record for the rest of the season. that's not going to happen. this season is done, i dont know why everyone is so hesitant to do anything.

  39. scoopcoop

why do people continously post ideas that will never happen? don't people follow the team and the way it operates?

There is no way that Castillo is traded or let go. No one will take his contract and Mets won't release him and have to pay him for not working for Mets. ditto Delgado….

and if you get rid of heilman and feliciano and the whole BP, who replaces them?

and you are saying the Mets have to win 98 games to make the playoffs? If that is your expectation you should be rooting for another team. Mets have only won that many games twice in 45 yrs….and nobody predicted 98 wins before the season.
