Mets Chat Room: Getting back up edition.

June

I hear all the rumors, too. But, nobody with the Mets has said Willie Randolph is in immediate trouble. Of course, I wouldn’t expect them to. This is all so ugly.

Not sure how you can blame Willie for yesterday, or any of Wagner’s recent blown saves. The players haven’t been up to snuff. Very few are performing the way they should. This is a team of players you can’t trade. Their value, when you come to think of it, is with the Mets and the hope they turn it around.

The Mets are down to hoping because there hasn’t been any sign of consistency they can turn it around and sustain.

Don't understand why we haven't heard any trade rumours at all. How can Minaya not be looking to dump Perez, Heilman, Delgado, or anyone in the bullpen? Even if you have to eat salary to do it. There's no help in the minors ready to step up, so why not try to get a high level prospect or two for some of these guys. I'd trade anyone not named Wright, Reyes or Santana, if I could find a taker and get some AAA guys. Really, John, why hasn't the press asked about moving some of these guys?

  2. Ray Sadecki

Boy, Its quiet on the board tonight. As John says, There is no way the Mets get close to equal value if the dismantle now. Its also too early. They will hope that changing the manager and a few coaches will stir things up. Omar is also hoping and praying that Church and Alou will come back and rake, Pedro will stay healthy and contribute, and Pelfry will continue to improve.

Sometimes, you just need to open up the window and let the bad air out.

  4. Seaver

Hey Ray—Omar is dreaming if that's what he's thinking. The team couldn't win when they had everyone healthy. And I'm not looking for equal value for some of these guys—just some AAA guys with an upside. Alou is done. He's 41 and has always been injury prone. Church hopefully recovers and continues to hit. But Delgado is a .240 hitter. The bench is beyond weak. Castillo was a mistake last July and last December. Perez is schizo and gone after this year anyway. Who needs Wagner on a .500 team. Heilman needs a change of scenery. Schoenweis might have value as a LOOGY to someone. Same with Feliciano. These guys should all be considered expendible on a team who's chance of making the postseason seems to be gone. Maybe an infusion of youth (sorely lacking in Mets minors) would help more than "equal value".

  5. Ray Sadecki

Seaver, I said close to equal value. Omar will keep on dreaming his dream until its close to the trading deadline, and the mets are double digits out of a wildcard spot.

  6. Tiffany

Delcos—When you see Dan Warthen, make sure you ask him about that sensational roundhouse curve he used to throw when he was with the Expos.

  7. Matt B in AZ

for the first time in my life, i'm going to take willie's side. the position players played/hit somewhat well in the d-backs series, it was the bullpen that blew 2 games(almost 3)

i guess what i'm getting at is that as much as i'd like to see willie go, these past few days (since sunday) havent been his fault.

  8. Tiffany

So, Willie's only responsible for the position players?

  9. Dan Gurney

Up 7-1 in the 6th with a good game by Coin Flip (after a first inning home run). Even Wagner and Heilmann can't blow this game (I hope).

  10. Jason W

We have nothing of value to anyone. Might as well stick it out with this group and see where we go.

The only change I would make is to make Heilman a starter when we are out of it. See if he can do it.. if fact, we should do it now and if he pitches well, we might be able to move him at the deadline.

Nobody wants Delgado. Perez is too inconsistent to be worth too much.

Really the only guys with value is Schoenweis and Feliciano.

  11. Ray Sadecki

If Texas was in our division life would be much better.

Way I see it… if Willie's fate is truly in Omar's hands then… Omar knows that as long as the press has Willie to blame, he's not in the direct line of fire… as he really most likely should be, at this point.

What's truly devolved since last season at this point is more the pitching than the hitting so… fire the pitching coach, buy some time.

I say this less as a Mets fan and more as a student of baseball:

The logical thing to do would be to fire the pitching coach so that Omar can look like he's doing SOMETHING without discarding his most effective firewall for his own employment.

  13. Ray Sadecki

Actually, the starting pitching has been very good lately. The 3 2-1 losses in San Diego, and every game since then has been well pitched by the starters with the exception of Pedro in SD. Ollie seems to be back on track and most importantly, Pelfry is really coming on. Good win tonight, lets see if they can build on it. Texas is a Godsend to this team right now.

    tiffany –

well, there you go. the mets traded for trot nixon. perhaps you should be considered for any of the potentially forthcoming vacancies in the mets hierarchy.

  15. Mike C.

Yeah, I'm not saying that it is all the pitching coach's fault… though the headscratching awfulness of the bullpen lately needs to be partly there.

    I'm just saying.

If this has been made Minaya's Call… then he needs to fire somebody to deflect blame from his own damn Castillo-signing self…

And best to drop a secondary mark before firing your main shield.

  16. dave crockett

I see the logic Mike C., but at this point I doubt a staff firing would buy Omar much of a reprieve. The only real move he has is a 'I had to do something' manager firing.

Is John Delcos still running this blog? I heard a rumor that the Journal-News traded him to the Beacon-Journal for two copy editors to be named later. Any confirmation of this?
