Mets Chat Room: Alou down again edition

June
12

It’s not official, but count on Moises Alou going on the DL again. The Mets are waiting for the MRI results, but Alou just said, “I think the DL is a possibility … I know my body and this feels like more than a few days away.”

I’m not going to put a lot of stock into last night. We’ve seen games like that before and had them hit the skids. They need to run of 15 of 20 or something like that to turn the corner.

Can you confirm that Ramon Castro is, in fact, at the ballpark?

  2. JOHN

That game ,although a win, still left a bitter taste in my mouth, I almost killed myself when Wagner gave up that HR. Lets see if we can get 2 in a row with a win today.

  3. edfever

It will be cathartic for this team to obtain a full time corner outfielder…. Whether it's a trade or someone on waivers/FA…. They have been in limbo offensively and roster wise due to Alou…. move on, if he comes back use him off the bench we know he can hit cold and is a great clubhouse figure….

  4. JOHN

    edfever,
I agree, this bootleg lineup with chavez and/or tatis, has run its course, Please helpppppp!!!!!!

  5. Steve (The Original)

Ed: There probably isn't anyone available to trade for that the Mets have prospects for. If they could get Raul Ibanez from the Mariners for a low level middle of the pack prospect then I would do it. I think that is where Omar should be looking.

  6. edfever

Steve – At least they finally promoted an actual outfielder in Chris Aguila before him it was all infielders out of position. If Aguila flops they three other outfielders ( Feliciano, Pascucci, Rodriguez) who should be given a try before Cancel, Casanova or Nunez return. There are stop gap guys they could bring in until the trade deadline.. Jay Gibbons, Kenny Lofton to name a few, there are a few out there…..

Then yes closer to the deadline you make a big move…

Both Omar and Willie see their patience as an asset and i tend to agree but it becomes a detriment when you never have a sense of urgency…

  7. John Delcos

edfever: Willie said Jay Gibbons was never on the Mets' radar.-JD

  8. Joe D.

    Hi everyone.

I've never been a big fan of Gibbons.

  9. Joe D.

I am surprised that the Mets would call up Aguila and then not start him.

  10. Joe D.

    Darth Vader launched that baby.

How many wins will it take to win the NL East?

  11. John Delcos

Joe D.: Are you really surprised by something the Mets would do?-JD

  12. Mike

Has Omar called Michael Strahan's agent? I'd pay to see him at First…

  13. edfever

jd- I was just suggesting a name but he is a LF/1B career .260 lefty who appears blacklisted from the mitchel report willing to sign a minor league deal at any level. I'll be very surprised if Aguila gets much playing time at all, he'll then have a .200 average and be sent down for an out of position aging vet.

  14. Steve (The Original)

JD: What do you think about Ibanez? He is in his walk year isn't he? I think he'd be a good addition and i'm pretty sure he could play 1b as well.

  15. mlj

Do we need at least a three run lead in the ninth for Wagner???

    http://www.myteamrivals.typepad.com/mr_mets_daily

  16. dan-rutgers.

    mlj-

dont post your site on someone elses site

  17. John Delcos

I don't feel very comfortable right now. Tying runs on with no outs. Wagner making us sweat again.-JD

  18. Matt B in AZ

putting wags in was a bad call. what happened last night with the three-run-jack will have metal reprocussions, there's no way he's focused.

  19. John Delcos

yeah, I don't think this is going to end pretty.-JD

  20. alex

anyone wanna wager a guess how this plays out…

  21. tomg

When you really need Wagner in a big spot he always gives it up. The Mets had many opportunities today to add on. Especially Wright and Beltran with bases loaded and one out and didn't get a signal run, just awful.

  22. Tiffany

Willie will do his best Art Howe imitation: "We battled…"

  23. Steve (The Original)

    Wagner is pathetic.

  24. John Delcos

Tiffany: I do believe Willie gave us a ``we battled'' the other night.-JD

  25. Mike C.

Winning in the 13th on a home run when you should'a won it looooooong ago isn't exactly a confidence builder. And now… here we are… with Wagner unravelling.

Lovely. A new flaw every day.

  26. John Delcos

Close, but it was a good call.-JD

  27. John Delcos

    Five blown saves for Wagner.-JD

  28. Matt B in AZ

christ. this is wagner's 3rd blown save in a row.

  29. tomg

If my memory serves me correctly the collapse was mostly the mets bull pen and Wagner. It looks like they decided to implode early this year.

  30. Metsie

I think for every blown save, the fans get to scarifice one of Billy's Alpacas. If that doesn't motivate Billy not to blow saves, I don't know what will.

  31. Steve (The Original)

Newsflash: Wagner has never been trustworthy in his career. No shock that he should continue to be that way. Add another need to the list

  32. BH

Wagner has traditionally had a few god awful games around this time of the year, a certain Yankees game comes to mind in particular but it has been an annual trend. Sadly, while little old me, sitting in my office in Boston, knows this, apparenyly no one on the Mets has figured it out.

  33. Matt B in AZ

this is unreal. and the worst part is, there's no solution.
anyone have any ideas as to who our closer should be?

  34. Evan

Let's see Wagner use his big mouth to explain how he just blew his last three save opportunities in a row.

  35. tomg

Well, now I know why the Astros got rid of wagner, 5 blown saves in a row is a good reason to dump his a@@.

  36. tomg

wow, to great defensive plays and good night.

  37. alex

    extra innings!? again?! oh boy!

i've begun to look at this as me getting more bang for my buck with my DIRECT TV mlb package.

  38. Steve (The Original)

tomg: IF DELGADO KNEW HOW TO SLIDE HE WOULD HAVE BEEN SAFE!!!! AAAARRRRGGGGH!!!!!!!!

  39. Tiffany

I think he's coping with the death of his changeup.

  40. Metsie

    Oh good, its Heilman.

  41. Steve (The Original)

5 blown saves and the year isn't even halfway done. Unbelievable. Unreal. Unfathomable.

  42. Josh

    5-4 Arizona

    Just shoot me…

  43. alex

well that doesn't bode well for me getting as much bang for my buck as last night…

  44. Matt B in AZ

i'm going to take so much crap for this.

  45. Matt B in AZ

a four run lead. how many times does this have to happen for some change to occur.

  46. tomg

first it was the starting pitchers not getting the job done, than the offense, now the bull pen. To me the collapse continues and there is no signs of it stopping. If this team is playing like this near the trading deadline I would sell or at least dangle wagner, perez, martinez, delgado, heilman and see if Omar can make a steal of a deal. At the trading dead line teams might be desperate for pitching and Omar might be able to get good young prospects, one can dream.

  47. Tiffany

Question: Any chance Delgado goes into the photobox for that ball?

  48. Steve (The Original)

And to think I thought Heilman could have maybe straightened himself out last night. Nope, same ol crap. I can't take this team anymore.

  49. Taylor

If the Mets are going to lose I'd prefer that they don't have the lead for the entire game before doing it. Its as if they go out of their way to lose in the most agonizing way possible.

They should have had more than 2 runs in the 7th. This is so GD frustrating!!

  50. Taylor

Matt B, what are they supposed to do? Promote Joe Smith to closer? If Wagner can't close games we have a disaster on our hands. Also TACK ON MORE RUNS!!

  51. tomg

What I like too know is where are those bloggers who said that it was early a month or two ago when i knew than this team was not as good as projected. I like to hear what they have to say now, still to early? 137 million dollar payroll, this is more than embarrassing. This is a bad organization, there is no other way to look at it. It figures that teams I've like and followed my entire life are now bad organizations. The rangers maybe are the only one who has a future but that's not because of James Dolan. Tom Renney and Dave Maloney are the reason why
    the rangers have a future.

  52. Tiffany

Is it time to shoot Old Yeller?

  53. tomg

    Tiffany,

It depends, who is old yeller? If it's Wagner than yes, shoot him.

  54. Matt B in AZ

taylor- yea that's pretty much why i posed that question. it's time for billy wagner to go, i don't care where or how.

and the fact of the matter is that more runs would have been nice, but bill wagner was given a simple job today: GET THREE OUTS WITHOUT LETTING TWO RUNNERS CROSS THE PLATE.

needless to say, he failed. everytime he picks up the ball, he fails.

  55. Taylor

Misery loves company. The Braves just plunked the winning run in with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th in Chicago. They had a 2-1 lead late in that game.

  56. John Delcos

    A few things:

-Let us not forget the comeback began with Joe Smith.

-The Mets are saying day-to-day for Moises Alou. The MRI showed he re-aggravated the injury.

-The Mets were 1-for-10 with RISP and left 11 runners.-JD

  57. scoopcoop

    stat of the day….

Santana is 1-2 w/2 no decisions when he gives up 0 or 1 runs. With the Twins he was 19-0 (I might be off here a little…anybody remember what they said on SNY?) w/2 no decisions over his career.

If you can't win games when your ACE pitches like that, you can't be any good. These kinds of games remind me of Pedro and the Mets in 05. And that team was a .500 team….

  58. scoopcoop

Why do any of you think the Mets would get rid of Wagner? They would not even get rid of Matsui until he was owed less than a couple Mil… and does it look like they are going to get rid of Delgado?.....Get real….the Mets simply do not dump large sums of $$....

  59. ChiliGTC

this team stinks, no ifs ands or buts…..time to fire Willie and trade Wagner, Heilman, Castillo (if possible), and possibly Beltran…time to load up the farm system and give up on this season!

  60. Dan Gurney

Just watching some of the replay on SNY. Do these guys bother to hustle? On the play when Wright was thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple did he run hard out of the box? Did he run hard on the smash to third in the 9th (picyure shows him kind of jogging when the throw reaches first)? Did Delgado run hard when he was forced at second on the Easley at bat to end the 9th? It's hard to tell on the TV and the announcers aren't mentioning it one way or another.

Delgado may be DL'd again? What a shock.
Smith, Wagner and Heilmann are the new Moe, Larry and Shemp.

  61. Taylor

I just watched the 9th inning on SNY Encore. I have to say that it was not as bad as it seemed at first. 3 reasons why. 1) the 1-2 pitch to Chris Young was strike 3. Not it was too close to take and the pitcher was around the plate so the ump should 'give it to him'. No it was actually over the plate right on the inside corner. 2) The chopper by Stephen Drew was a lucky infield hit and 3) the chopper by Connor Jackson where it bounced too high to get a double play was also lucky. Sorry all of you who just want to trash the Mets but they had some very bad luck that inning.

  62. Dan Gurney

The Mets had some bad luck but they put themselves into that position. Up 4-0 after 7 innings, bases loaded and one out with Wright and Beltran up and they get nothing. Was it necessary to sacrifice with Chavez and not steal with Reyes in the ninth?

  63. tomg

    Dan Gurney,

Totally agree, they left 8 men in the 6,7 and eight inning. All three games they score early and than the offense sputters. There is no excuse here people. This is a bad team. Everything that is happening with this team is because it's just not a good team. The Wilpons need to wake up and realize that Omar Minaya and his regime has not done a good job here. Omar Minaya built this team to win now (2006). This team has to many aging players and there not going to get younger. It appears Willie Randolph is going to get fired. If he does the rest of the coaching staff should go with him and in the off season Omar Minaya should be next.

  64. tomg

Here is a link to a interesting article by Joel Sherman about Omar Minaya.

  65. Stick

theres about what, 40 or so games until the trade deadline?

Unless the Mets can go roughly 27-13 over the next 40 games (a big if), they should probably look to sell off the movable parts (BP arms, Delgado, OLlie, etc.) at the trade deadline, to see if they can get some viable bodies to help restock for 2009.

They still need to make 2 or 3 major additions for 2009, but they also need to collect some parts, and who knows, maybe they can score a young guy that will blossom for them?

  66. Taylor

Without Alou and Church in the lineup and with Oliver Perez reverting back to the form that led the Pirates to give up on him this is a .500 team. If Perez can pitch fairly well and Church and Alou can play they are actually a better than .500 team, more like a .600 team. But those are big ifs and all 3 might turn out badly. Alou's injuries have to be partly due to bad luck which can't continue forever but then again maybe he's just constructed of third-grade body tissue. Church may or may not come back from the concussion. Concussions have ended many athletes careers, like Brett Lindros who never played a game after the age of 23. So Church is no guarantee to come back. Lastly Ollie is a very sensitive personality who could go into a spiral and have trouble getting himself out of it. Especially in this very high pressure environment with the Mets having an agonizing and disappointing season. So, yeah, when 3 of the guys that we were counting on getting significant contributions from may not be able to give us any, we aren't as good as we thought we were.

  67. TheGuvlovestheMets

Let's see Taylor: The first guy up was alefty hitiun back-up catcher and Wagner gets ahead 1-2 and doesn't come close to the plate. Seems like bad freakin pitching to me.
The next guy Drewhits a ball that you call bad luck. In reality my frirnd, it ewas bad play, bad play by Easley who never covered 2nd; if he went to the bag insterad of wandering around aimlessly, there is an easy out. Bad play, not bad luck at all.
The pitch tp Young. Sny never used the overhead shot, soyou don't know if the pitch was inside. Since there was no reaction from Castro, or big mouth, it was inside. Even it was a bad call, are youy excusing Wagner getting rocked on the next pitch. A 36 year old supposed superstar, can't handle a call. Excuses, my friend are for losers, winners execute. See the bottom of the 9th for execution.

  68. tomg

    Taylor,

Alou was injury prone before Omar signed him to his first contract with the mets. The guy is 40 years old and has been injury prone for most part, his whole career, it's not bad luck, it's a bad signing. Church getting concussions was a bad break and Ollie is the same guy he was when he was traded from the pirates. I as a met fan want a team built for the most part through the farm system, not signing over the hill veterans and over paying them, that's not the way to build a team that will be good for years to come. This is why the mets looked good in 2006.
