Mets Chat Room: Keeping the roll.

June
2

The Mets are in San Francisco tonight to play a team they should beat. They went 5-2 on their recent homestand and would be giving all that momentum and good feelings back it they don’t win out here this week.

So, are you on the bandwagon or not?

Every time I’ve come here before the place has been packed, but not tonight, and it’s a great night. Maybe they are all home watching the Penguins and Red Wings.

The best thing about being on the road. You strike out with the sacks full and you get cheered!

  2. benny blanco from da bronx

I’m gonna use my good ol’ pal copy and paste to put my comment into the appropriate post.

I just flipped my coin in honor of Oliver Perez, same rule as last time, heads is a good game and tails is a bad game.
    And the result is…

    HEADS!
Oliver Perez will have a good game!

EDIT: As of right now though, Ollie gave up a dinger to Randy Winn.

  3. Mike C.

Things are certainly looking better but… y’know… once bitten, twice shy.

Castillo’s hip looked really shakey last night, Church… as well as he did… from what little medical knowledge I have, should not have been out there.

Schnide’s still coming down to Earth, Delgado keeps falling back into old habits and weak batspeed two or three days after a rest… Heilman’s a mess, Alou and Pedro are total question marks.

    And yet:

If Reyes, Beltran, Wright and the starting pitching are all firing on all cylinders at once… I can’t think of a better team out there.

I’m not buying my NL East banner yet but I’m certainly more hopeful.

  4. BH

I keep waiting for the day someone goes out to the mound and punches Perez in the face…I mean serious does anyone ever deserve it more than this !@#$?

  5. John Delcos

Another fine mess you’ve gotten (the Mets) into, Ollie.’’ With apologies, of course, to Laurel and Hardy.-JD

  6. RMKmets

Forget about moving Pelfrey or Vargas…just throw this stupid piece of crap loser Perez out with the garbage. He is the biggest waste of a baseball uniform I’ve ever seen

  7. RMKmets

BH: I’m with you…I wish I could be one of the guys punching him

  8. TheGuvlovestheMets

Thank you Ollie for letting everyone back East get a full night sleep!

  9. RMKmets

Get this loser out of the game already.

  10. Ben from Flushing

I had to go back to find my exact words:

    Ben from Flushing
    May 25th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

How come I feel like the words “first big-league home run” and “first big league win” are associated more with Mets’ opponents than anyone else in baseball?

  11. John Delcos

Ben: You know, I thought of that. Nice job.-JD

  12. John T

What the hell did I just watch? I guess we got the wrong side of the Coin Flip. Go Red Wings!

  13. Warner Wolf

You could turn off your sets right there…

  14. Ray Sadecki

forget about my let Ollie pitch 4. Seriously, can we get anything for this guy now? I would rather have a vargas or a
Armas out there. You cant be a contender with a starter like this.

  15. Ray Sadecki

The Pirates are laughing thier behinds off right now.

  16. John Delcos

Randolph shot out of the dugout as if he were on a spring. I think we have a glimpse of Vargas’s new role.-JD

  17. Jimmy dean

Good thing Ollie got to San Fran a day early!!!

  18. John Delcos

OK … this game stinks. Anybody want to talk about the Celtics and Lakers?-JD

  19. RG

Where’s that @#*! arbitrator who awarded Coin Flip $6.5M?

  20. JCT

At least we don’t have to worry about wasting big bucks on OP next season—sheesh what a performance. Coin flip? How about Coin Flop?

    JT

  21. Warner Wolf

    Carlos Delgado…SWISH!

  22. John Delcos

To Jimmy Dean: I’m going to use that. Can you imagine what would have happened if he came here tired?-JD

  23. Ray Sadecki

    Does perez still have options?

  24. Azy

Since the Mets are facing the closest thing to Oliver Perez, they might have a shot to get back in this game.

  25. tomg

Perez is a bum, plain and simple. I’ve said it on this blog a few times. I would not sign this guy after this season, let him walk, good riddance.

  26. Warner Wolf

Jose Reyes from the right side…SWISH

  27. John Delcos

Azy: I read that just as Jose Reyes doubles. It is early, but if they come back that would really screw up a lot of lines I’d like to use.-JD

  28. edfever

    JD-

Joining late Willie should have left him out there til he reached 100 pitches – im sick of the kid – he will always be a tease and his flashes of greatness are getting shorter and shorter

  29. Ray Sadecki

Im not turning off my tv yet, Lets go Mets!!!!

  30. Tiffany

He’s got to find a way to finish the inning. If he can’t tough it out and record three outs, then he gets relegated to Trachsel/GlavineLand.

  31. John Delcos

edfever: You know, part of me is torn. Let him suck it up and save the bullpen. Then again, if you’re doing that, you’re telling your other players they don’t have a chance. They do have enough time left in this game.-JD

  32. edfever

Pedro told Berhardt El Duque looking at July first heard anything

  33. John Delcos

Tiffany: Let me do the math. He got one out and gave up six runs. Three outs would be 18 runs, right? Hey, if you can’t laugh, what else is there?-JD

  34. edfever

Your right but I’m sick of his act and them trying to baby him to get the most from him – rem. when willie yelled at Maine on the mound and he went on to strike out the side- ollie would have started crying and then walk everyone in town

  35. Tiffany

He had absolutely nothing during his start in Denver, but I thought he showed something by toughing it out. Tonight, in the words of Borat, “Not so much.” I’m afraid this will become a question of intestinal fortitude, what Delcos eloquently refers to as stones.

  36. Ray Sadecki

    Hurry back duque

  37. John Delcos

What’s really a kicker about Coin Flip, is he’s still going to get a pile of bucks after this season to be mediocre for somebody else. What a country!-JD

  38. BH

What I find most ridiculous is the fact that if Perez pitched a no hitter his next time out I wouldn’t be at all surprised.

  39. John Delcos

BH: That’s why I call him Coin Flip.-JD

  40. Ray Sadecki

Oh, the Giants are trying to give this one back. One big fly, cmon.

  41. paulunde

    John-

You never told us it was a two-headed coin! This guy truly is awful. He hasn’t improved one bit since the Pirates washed their hands of him.

    Paul

  42. Ray Sadecki

    nevermind.

  43. John Delcos

Paul: It seems both sides have been tails. This is three stinkers in a row. Maybe he is consistent.-JD

  44. edfever

Church should make the All-star team

  45. edfever

Yeah that coin isnt landing even – 06 was the aberration

  46. edfever

Despite the big lead these guys are showing life

  47. John Delcos

For the record, Coin Flip’s outing was the shortest by a Met pitcher since Tom Glavine in the final game of last season. In case you were wondering.-JD

  48. edfever

    JD-

Does heilman have options, he’s over three years in the majors but might not have five years of professional baseball meaning that he has to complete four years in the majors before hes out of options

  49. John Delcos

edfever: Heilman does have options remaining. I spoke to Omar about that recently and he said the team has no plans on sending him out. If he’s going to turn it around, it will be up here.-JD

  50. paulunde

    John-

You have got to get a few comments from Wagner following the game. I doubt he’d want to give you anything you can use after his last commentary on “our boy Ollie,” but we can all imagine what he must be thinking.

And don’t we usually have some Perez defenders posting here from time to time?

The only good things to possibly come of this is that perhaps Willie will let Ollie hit the pines instead of Vargas, and Boras may have to actually work for his next boat load of cash.

    -Paul

  51. edfever

Instead of Coin toss = russian Roulette he either kills you or make you take a big sigh of relief – never easy to watch

  52. John Delcos

Just wanted to say that Luis Castillo has been playing real well lately. Bat and glove. Still think four years was too much, but he’s been on the last few weeks.-JD

  53. edfever

they’ll get two years, platoon a third and eat the last – he is very smooth in the field almost goes un-noticed

  54. Sam G. in Portland

Don’t be so sure Perez won’t be around next year. This is the same Omar Minaya that threw fools money out to El Duque too.

Personally, I’d like to see Minaya grow a set and DFA him tomorrow.

  55. edfever

    JD-
Any insight into why they wouldnt send him down – seems like a bit of tough love for a guy on the ropes that has provided alot in the past

  56. edfever

vargas looking good as a long man – Armas could jump into the rotation he’s pitching very good in AAA right now…

  57. edfever

They could send down Casanova and keep all the pitchers – there not using him anyway

  58. Ray Sadecki

If Pedro cant stay healthy this time, forget it. I like the russian rulette, Ed, but in that game there are 5 good chambers and 1 bad. That ratio doesnt work with Crazy Ollie.

  59. John Delcos

edfever: Minaya seems adamant Heilman can work it out up here. He was throwing well before the meltdown in the Dodger game. Heilman has always had spurts when he stinks, but turns it around. He’s just been more stinky lately than usual. Did I just write ``more stinky?’’-JD

  60. edfever

lol how about a double barrel shot gun- Muniz just got himeslf sent down theres pedros spot

  61. Ben from Flushing

Helluva Game 5 on NBC. Two overtimes down, ? to go!

  62. edfever

being a liitle tough on the kid- leaving him in

  63. Ben from Flushing

Maybe it’s the late hour talking, but I have a feeling that Willie won’t sugarcoat his comments on OP tonight. Hope you don’t have to prod too much, JD.

  64. edfever

JD- I dont think Heilman’s coming out of this one too deep – change of scenery is needed

  65. benny blanco from da bronx

    Hmm, so much for Heads

  66. alex

i think they should skip coin flip next time through the rotation (and JD – please ask if this is a possibility). maybe that might have some impact (as the money he might lose for his bad walk year doesn’t seem to be having much effect).

i reluctantly agree that given the fact they’ve been playing somewhat better baseball of late you had to take him out, but i almost would have been willing to give the game away and let him stay out there and give up 20 runs if he couldn’t figure out a way to make it out of the inning.

of course, part of my motivation for wanting him skipped is that i’m driving down to san diego from la this weekend to watch santana and pedro pitch friday and sunday and i unfortunately got stuck with perez in between them.

but really, at this point why not send muniz down, pitch pelfrey on thursday and vargas on saturday?

  67. Ray Sadecki

Paging Dr. Peterson…..Paging Dr. Peterson…..... We have an emergency here. Patient Needs a quick dose of a clue stat!!!!

  68. John Delcos

    FROM THE CLUBHOUSE

-Randolph sugar coated nothing, calling it a ``terrible, terrible outing.’’

-After the game, Randolph said Carlos Muniz would be optioned to make room in the rotation for Pedro Martinez, Mike Pelfrey would stay in the rotation and Claudio Vargas would work in long relief.

  69. Mike C.

...once bitten, twice shy, as a dude said.

Good to hear they’re not wrecking Pelfrey mentally by demoting him, though. That’ll provide results beyond the simple near-term, definitely.

  70. Ray Sadecki

OK, I will be the one to bring it up. Before, I called him crazy Ollie a few times, jokingly. Could this be the first case of a player being DLed for Mental health problems? His chewing on the baseball the other day may hint at that, Or is it drugs? There is obviously something wrong with this kid, I hope they find out what it is soon. You dont go from 15 Wins to garbage in one year unless something is wrong. Normally its something physical, but he looks to be in fine physical heatlh.

  71. OS

How long before the players on the field give up on backing Ollie? Time to get rid of him, wether it’s mental or not. There are other options that can be used and they can’t be as bad as he is this year. If they keep him, Willie will need a Malox drive.

  72. scoopcoop

We all know that OP is a head case (loses focus, gets upset when anything issue happens on the field-an error, a misplayed ball).

But I also wonder if he is hurt. His FB does not have the same zip (it has been down from time to time and he has hardly hit 93, mostly 89-90). His slider also does not seem to have as much of that nasty break either which accounts for his very poor numbers against righties. He comes across his body (that puts alot of stress on the shoulder).

Or is he just not getting properly loose in the BP b/c several games his FB has been mid-80s to start.

In any event, if he keeps throwing like this the Mets are in trouble unless Pedro can stay healthy and Pelfrey pitches more like his game against the Dodgers or his games against the Nats.

  73. tomg

I know it won’t happen but if I were the Mets I would try and trade Perez. There’s gotta be a team out there that would be willing to take a chance that needs pitching desperately. It’s also a positive that perez will be a free agent. it’s amazing how this Met team makes the below average teams look good this year. The giants have no offense but yet they score ten runs. The giant pitcher who pitched last night is one of there worse and yet the guy pitches 7 innings, strikes out a ton of met hitters and gives up two runs. This team is way to inconsistent to win the division or to make the playoffs.

  74. OS

scoopcoop – It might be just experimenting on the mound with Ollie. He is know to do that in addition to losing focus. Can he be optioned to AAA? If he can, it might be what he needs to cure whatever ails him(physical or mental). If not, let somebody else take him and good luck to them.

  75. The Magic is Back

John, I have the same question as OS. Does Perez have options? As shaky as he’s been I think Pelfrey is a surer bet right now. To keep running Perez out there might do serious irreparable harm to him not to mention what he’s doing to the team and the bullpen.

  76. RG

    I got it:

Coin Flip is trying to get Peterson’s hair to fall out. Peterson didn’t shave his head like the rest of the team did last season. Coin Flip is just trying to get Peterson to bond with the team—however belatedly.

  77. tomg

It looks like Ortiz could be out for the season. If I was Omar I would contact the Redsox and see if there is any interest in Delgado. Maybe the mets could trade Delgado to the Redsox for a prospect or two. The Redsox have a very good farm system and
Delgado could DH for the Redsox and play first base.

  78. Stillsane

I think scoopcoop’s point about coin flip’s health considering the recent loss of speed on his fastball is a very valid one. We all know that flip needs “a checkup from the neck up”, but, the fact that his fastball has all of the sudden become batting practice quality is one that should not be ignored. Maybe some time on the DL with everything from an exorcism to an intervention for flippy may do him some good. His head is obviously not in the game at this point. They can even try to work with him on his pitching mechanics!

tomg – I thought Ortiz was only going to be out for a month. Did you see something different? I do not think anyone is going to take Delgado without the Mets picking up about 90% of his remaining salary for the year. One can dream though, I agree.

  79. tomg

    Stillsane,

according to what I heard this morning on espn is that if he has surgery done on the wrist he could be out for the season.

  80. Stillsane

    Thanks Tomg for the update.

  81. scoopcoop

I always find it amazin that people berate a player for his crappy performance but expect that he can be traded and the mets get something in return.

If the Mets pay the remainder of Delgado’s salary and give the Sox a couple of prospects then maybe the Sox take him.

To expect anything different is silly.

I don’t think OPs lost velocity is b/c he is experimenting. Sometimes he tries to side arm it but that was not the case last nite. He had no zip.

But if he is experimenting, Willie should give him an ultimatum. Do it the Zen Master’s way or find yourself in the BP. At least Vargas gives it his best.

  82. scoopcoop

    To my earlier point.

The Mets are 15–7 in games when Maine and Santana are pitching. They are 13–21 otherwise. They need Pedro to stabilize the rotation. That is alot to ask. That is why OP being so bad will hurt this team big time.

And people are saying get rid of him. What do you replace him with? It is like saying get rid of Heilman. There is no one to replace him either.

If Pedro could be counted on you to give you 2 to 1 wins to losses like Maine/Santana then you could think of using Vargas. But that is a big if.

  83. tomg

    scoopcoop,
“If the Mets pay the remainder of Delgado’s salary and give the Sox a couple of prospects then maybe the Sox take him.”

If anything is silly is the comment you made. Mets trade Delgado, pay his salary and give boston prospects, that is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. Delgado isn’t that bad. I’m just saying if Ortiz had surgery and ends up out for the rest of the season the redsox might be interested in a left handed DH/First basemen. There isn’t anything silly about it.

  84. tomg

If anything is silly is met fans thinking that there is something wrong with perez. The only thing wrong with perez is
the same thing that’s been wrong with him since the days he pitched for the pirates, it’s called mechanics. Plus he has air between his ears.

  85. scoopcoop

tomg, you post many negatives on many things including saying Mets should get rid of Delgado but then say the Sox should give the Mets players in return for Delgado?

Be realistic. Not silly. Mets are not gonna get rid of Delgado unless somebody picks up alot of his $$-that is not gonna happen. And since that won’t happen, to expect any team (especially a team run as well as the Sox) to give the Mets anything in return is silly. Plus, why would the Sox trade for him right now? They are bascially in first place. They don’t need a guy who is owed 10MM, does not play well and has a bad attitude.

So if my comment is silly it is b/c posters post silly comments like Delagdo stinks but let’s get some prospects for him. Not gonna happen unless you give him to Sox for nothing and give them something they can use (some prospects). Of course Mets have no prospects, so it is a mute point.

and as far as OP. Do you watch the games? His velcoity is down and his slider is not breaking. His BAA against righties is way up over last yr.

It could be mechanics simply b/c he is dopey and changes them on purpose or simply can’t repeat them. But it could be b/c he is adjusting his mechanics to eliminate some pain. He throws across his body. Maybe he has stressed out his shoulder. Time will tell.

  86. tomg

    scoopcoop,

let me get this straight, I’m being negative because I mentioned if ortiz had surgery and is out for the season Omar should look into to see if the Redsox would be interested in delgado. That’s what I posted. I never said they should, could or anything but Omar should look into it if Ortiz ends up out for the season. I also didn’t realize that you were a doctor and know that perez is injured or doing drugs. If anything those are ridiculous statements. If there were anything physically wrong with perez, don’t you think that the mets would know, come on man, your killing me.

  87. tomg

The whole delgado thing is a mute point anyway because as of right now the Redsox said that there are going to place Ortiz on the DL and hope the wrist gets better. If they opted for surgery he would miss the rest of the season but obviously the Redsox are trying to avoid that situation.

  88. Tiffany

Scoop—I share your concerns about Perez’ health. Keith and Gary were mentioning how his fastball was lacking both during his start in Colorado and last night. If his arm was hurting, do you think he’d tell anyone when he’s in his walk year and looking for a long-term contract?

  89. scoopcoop

Tiff, professional athletes sometimes just don’t say anything b/c they have aches and pains all the time. Who knows? But I would not be surprised if he had something. On the other hand, Tim Hudson mysteriously lost velocity for a couple of starts and now seems to be fine….

  90. scoopcoop

tomg, I’m just trying to throw some realty in here. alot of fans seem to think that other teams GMs will just take away Met players b/c we want them too.

I’m sure Omar has been shopping Delgado for months. But either he has no takers or no takers at the price he is willing to do it at (possible scenario-take at least half Delgado’s $$). Fact is, I highly doubt he will be traded. Just hope batting 7th he can do something like last yr 24/87.

And hope Mets can land Texiera b/c they need that 3rd bat in the middle of the lineup if they are going to have nay chance in the future.

  91. tomg

I hear you, I agree but I don’t think the Mets are going to land Texiera. I hope I’m wrong but he is from Baltimore and the Orioles can afford him since they cut there payroll. It’s either the orioles or the yankees who will probably sign Texiera.
