Mets Chat Room: Going home edition

Can the Mets salvage this road trip and head home with enough steam to right their season? Personally, I haven’t changed my feelings on this team. I still think they can get into the playoffs.

But there’s no secret things have to change. And, they’d better happen quickly. They have first-place Florida coming in this week. They are four games back, so you do the math to figure out what they have to do.

I have spent much of the morning trying to figure out what to do about the problems lately with obnoxious posters. I don’t have the capabilities on implementing a registration system unilaterally. But, that is something that has to be discussed. In the interim, thanks for your patience.
For posters such as Josh, JK, Gil, Tiffany, Annie Savoy and others, I know who you are and know when you’ve had an imposter. I’ve tried to delete as many as those as I could.
Bear with me. I’m not going to let a few ruin this.-JD
Ordinarily I hate the trite “Keys to the Game” that networks like SNY trot out before every game, but I agree that Maine’s pitch count is kind of a big deal. Too often he has to labor through batters and ends up giving the Mets less innings than they could use.
Exhibit A: 26 pitches to get through the first 4 batters and get 3 outs. Hope he finds a groove, and fast.q
Ben: Better so far in the second. Two outs on 10 pitches.-JD
Good for Gary Cohen for calling out Gary Carter for his disgraceful campaigning for a job currently held. Keith should’ve backed him up instead of trying to cover for his old teammate.
Oh, Jose. (sigh.)
6 ks thru 3 for Johnny… perfect lineup for him today, the only good hitter in there is Helton…
WTG Reyes… instead of a DP to end the inning, now it’s 1st and 2nd and 1 out…
And it results in 3 runs… god, Reyes is such a f—-in idiot…
Lack of focus and attention to details will kill you everytime.
It’s funny the defense or the pitcher always hide the offense, who once again looks aweful.
How many times do I have to say it, reyes has s@@t between his ears. I do not like reyes anymore, he is such a waste of talent. All the talent in the world but nothing upstairs. Reyes is probably thinking about going out to a club tonight.
How come I feel like the words “first big-league home run” and “first big league win” are associated more with Mets’ opponents than anyone else in baseball?
JD,
This team is a joke. It goes so far beyond injuries, and old age, and lack of fire. These guys can’t even make the plays they ARE physically capable of making. There may be a handful who have their heads in the game. The rest have checked out. The fact that there is no plan B for Pedro, Alou, or El Duque is Omar’s fault. That these guys are asleep time and again on the field falls on Willie.
I’m afraid it’s because you’re right Ben.
This is the met team that we are going to see all year. The mets will score a ton a runs one maybe two games in a row, look good, than the next 5-7 games look horrible offensively, score very few runs and look lethargic.
Well at least we’re in Colorado where no lead is safe. We’ll come back!
JD,
I’ve been blaming Omar for the team he built but your right, the mets look like there heads are not in the game more than times than not and that has to fall on the manger. I’ve changed my mind, I think it is time for Omar to wake up and make a move, the only problem is there isn’t anybody available that could change this teams attitude and if your going to fire the manger the whole staff should go.
Here is my problem with the Mets starters, every time Maine and Perez pitch we keep hearing about the high pitch counts by the time the fourth inning rolls along.
What exactly does Rick Peterson do about that. I’ve never seen so many 0-2 counts go to 3-2 counts in my life…
Well, the good news for me is I have a sweet 16 party to go to at a hall. It’s going to be like going to a wedding so I’m out of here and won’t be able to watch the rest of this game which will be beneficial for me.
Hi John – I’m just back from the local Memorial Day parade – what happened here?
Joe D from Mets Merized Online,
That’s another thing I mentioned the other night. Why is it I
never here or see peterson take any hits. I think he needs to go. I would fire the whole coaching staff.
tomg – I agree that if Willie goes, all the coaches should go with him. But… none of the coaches were hand picked by Willie. They are all Omar’s guys… Rick Down was the only coach that Willie himself chose… He was also fired by Omar… Don’t hold your breath thinking that Omar will fire the entire staff.
Whatever they were just cooking looked gross, gimme my Nathans hotdog over that garbage anytime!
That play where reyes got picked off in the 10th inning is like a recurring nightmare…
reyes slowed up on that play. couldve been safe, and HEY WILLIE IF YOU THOUGHT IT WAS A BALK WHY NOT GO OUT THERE AND SAY IT!?
Great baseball instincts by Cook on that DP, wish the Mets showed some baseball smarts like that.
Bob – Willie does most of his talking during his post game, otherwise… mum’s the word.
Joe D and tomg – as I wrote above, I’m just back from a parade – we had impostors here? What do you guys know about that?
Annie: Reyes error prolongs inning. What could have been an inning-ending DP was parlayed into a three-run homer.-JD
Hi Annie – I was not aware of that. I Showed up in the 4th inning…
I’ve been thinking about it, and I kinda liked my impostor better than I like myself.
4-1 Colorado.. and on the verge of losing 2/3 to the 2nd worst team in the NL… what the hell is wrong with this team???
It looked like Maine was handing the ball to Willie like he thought he was going to come out. I like that Willie is letting him work his way out of trouble.-JD
John – I like that old school way – make the pitcher get out of his own mess.
So, someone else was being Annie?
Yeah, but 121 pitches is bad news for a young pitcher.
tiffany – maine isn’t exactly young, he IS 27
Annie: Trying to. There is only one Annie Savoy.-JD
I hope so, Bob. At the end of the day, I place my trust in the Jacket: He’s been very good at preserving young arms.
JD – is the meeting with willie, omar, and the wilpons supposed to happen tonight? I hope they ax him, hes horrible
Whoever they’re considering has to be able to cure Reyes of his regression.
Tatis in left, Schoeneweis now pitching.-JD
I’m not saying I think Willie Randolph doesn’t deserve what might be coming, but is it really his fault that this offense disappears for days at a time?
The meeting with Willie, Minaya and the Wilpons should be Monday. The Mets don’t want to have this drag on.-JD
Eventually, Willie will get axed. All managers do. I just don’t see it happening tomorrow. If it does, I’ll never believe Minaya again.-JD
I think so. I think inconsistency is a hallmark of a focus problem. Just watch Reyes for a week and ask yourself if he would benefit from a new manager.
The Mets are one game below .500 and four games out of first. Firing the manager now is a panic move, something Steinbrenner used to do.-JD
jd – but they have been playing 500 ball for almost a full season by now! Look at the loss of focus on all the players! Not everything is Willie’s fault but something needs to change!
I agree John.
In the half inning before Church pinch hit, they had the camera in the dugout on John Maine and Church was next to him looking up with his eyes closed shut for about 3-4 seconds like he was still groggy…
He didnt seem like he was in and condition to pinch hit.
I think you could make a strong case that you could hang this loss on Reyes…
does anyone think we should resign Oliver Perez? (Assuming that he wants to)
joe d – no way boras would milk the mets for all their money. Id rather they go after teixeira
I think today’s topic title, “Going Home”, is very appropriate based upon the Met’s hitters seemly having already gone home. I appreciate that Church still tried to pinch hit even with dizziness. I still think Reyes is unfocused, and, truth be told, Chavez does not look like he has any clue offensively. The best thing to happen this weekend was see Vargas keep the Mets out of their bull pen early on three days rest and Evans coming up and showing some of the veterans on the team what exhuberance and hustle looks like from a ball player.
Joe D – I haven’t figured out OP, but he is an interesting pitcher.
John – What did the Wilpons hope to gain by refusing to return Willies call about the apology?
oy vey this team is pathetic, losing 2 out of 3 to the team with the 2nd worst record in the nl? come on, PLEEEASE FIREEE WILLIE JEFFY
I would not sign OP if he remains the same because he is inconsistent, and, does not look like he takes instruction well. His natural stuff is appealing, but, his overall makeup would make me pass.
I plan to be at Shea tomorrow and I hope it doesn’t get too ugly when Willie comes to make his first pitching change and will likely hear about it from the fans.
OK – Howie has put this flawed game in “the Book”. Tomorrow should be an interesting day for the Mets organization.
Safe trip everyone.
ben – i hope the fans rip him to shreds, this team has been lifeless since june of last year.
ben – don’t forget his despicable comments, this will be the first time the fans will get to boo him since those comments. expect extreme booing deserved or deserved
Bob—I’m not saying it’s undeserved, just hoping it doesn’t get too ugly. Insta-curse, swear-chant, Rocker-esque ugly.
The Mets need change. Like it or not, there is no way that the Wilpons are going to let the continuing public outcry of dissatisfaction from the Mets fans to spread much further. Their are businessmen, and their ability to sell advertising, seats, and, the Mets as a whole, is directly related to their success. With a new stadium coming in, I believe they are not going to be satisfied with a third place finishing, 500 team. The answer may not be to dismiss Willie, but, the worse choice in the public’s eye than dismissing Willie is not doing anything. The Wilpons know that the New York market is a demanding one with little patience and even a shorter memory span for the positive things only. Their product is failing and changes are needed.
Just came up from the clubhouse. I could have predicted everything that was said. Nobody, however, is pointing fingers at Randolph. The players are saying it is their fault, which, of course, it is.-JD
Have a safe flight, John. Tomorrow may prove interesting. Even if nothing is done, the leak about the meeting with Willie and the Wilpons begs some type of response.
This team is gutless heartless sack of crap. Jose Reyes has become a mini version of Carlos Delgado. Careless attitude horrendous defense and no hustle. Delgado has poisoned the entire clubhouse. Glad Steamboat Willie pinch hit Church for Evans. I mean God forbid the kid get a chance. Why not pinch hit for Schneider instead? Oh wait he’s a veteran I’m sorry. I can’t take too much more of Endy Chavez. Yeah wonderous catch two years ago he has had what one good game since then? Beltran has freaking stunk too, but unlike Delgado he plays good defense. Captain cliche David Wright shouldn’t be taken off the grittle. Neither should the injcompetant Gm. Who built an old aging soft team that once they go down by a run or two they stay down. Sickening.
This team is alot like the ‘92 team with Delgado playing the part of Bobby Bo and Steamboat Willie playing the part of Jeff Torborg. Have I meantioned Castillo has very quickly become one of my least favorite Mets of all time. 3 years left on that retarded contract good job Omar.
Drug Test JOSE REYES! Ever since he started hanging out with Castillo. He’s not the same player. Who ever thought that Gooden would become a druggie. So its possible REYES is either on DRUGS or goes out drinking every night with Castillo.
In ‘06 Reyes had Floyd and Valentin as role Models and they kept him humble and he followed their example. These days he’s following that cancer named Delgado. I was fine with Willie benching Reyes for not hustling, but once he didn’t do the same to Delgado he lost Reyes and the respect of the room imo.
John was the piece of thrash Delgado still in the room? If so when are you guys gonna ask him about his putrid defense, hustle and his loser attitude? Oh wait you are a liberal and Delgado’s anti war talk makes him above approach I apologize. Was that yappy little loser Reyes around?
Hey John they’ve stink for over a year now. What other move can be made? The team is unmotivated and lazy. They play hustle free sloppy baseball. That is not on Steamboat Willie? His I am not worried we’ll get pay back routine didn’t work last year.It won’t work this year. I have no issue with dumping Omar as well. Beinfest or Ryan would make a fine choice as gm.
Reyes makes an error and the great John Maine lays not one but two fastballs right down the middle. If it were Perez you all would be talking about him imploding. Well, Maine certainly imploded and not one of you said a word. You all are so busy hating on your own, you don’t even watch anymore.
And I’m sure not one of you bitched when Church came up to bat. The only thing worse than the team’s play, is the supposed fanbase.
oh a real fan here. Let’s all cheer the crap we’re being spoonfeed. Maybe we should give Delgado a standing O for his effort, hustle and leadership.
Any chance that John Delcos can bug the room where the Wilpons, Minaya and Randolph will meet on Monday? That would be very interesting. This is so disheartening I don’t know what to say or do. I have advocated for Randolph to keep his job. He is not solely responsible for the team’s play. But he doesn’t seem to be helping it either. Maybe Randolph, a good player and a good man, isn’t cut out to manage.
But if not Randolph, then who? Jerry Manuel? He had some success in Chicago but is he pretty much the same personality
as Randolph? Lee Mazzilli? He has probably the best manager the Orioles had since they fired Davey Johnson but that isn’t saying much. Bobby Valentine has an out in his contract. He did good work his first few years but he mailed it in back in 2002. Basically begged the Mets to fire him. I don’t think the Wilpons will bring him back. They never brought back Davey Johnson (neither did Cincinnati or Baltimore).
40 years ago the Mets traded a young pitching prospect to get a manager from Washington named Gil Hodges. Minaya and Bernazzard love Manny Acta, who has done a good job with a weak team (which is not the same as trying to win with a team expected to). The Gnats would not want to help a division rival. But maybe they can make an offer the Gnats can’t refuse.
I would be interested in knowing what Hojo and The Sweater are doing with their pupils. But they can do only so much. They aren’t on the mound or in the batter’s box.
So graves9, did John Maine not throw 2 pitches right down the middle of the plate??? Did John Maine not pick up his teammate after an error? I guess he didn’t give up the HR on the fattst pitch of the year since Wise’s fat pitch in game 2. I guess Delgado gave up the HR. So Delgado’s is evil because he opposes the war. Well, why aren’t you in Iraq if the war is so good? I guess 75% of Americans are just like Delgado because they all oppose the same war. Are 75% of Americans a bad influence on Reyes?
He picked up that jackass Delgado in the first he couldn’t pick up Reyes. It still doesn’t change the fact that Delgado in a complete and utter disgrace.
My bashing of Delgado has zero to do with his political views. It has to do with his play and his attitude. Maybe he can give an effort once in a blue moon. Maybe he can actually hit for the first time in two years.
Reyes plays under the same malaise as Delgado. No effort putrid d careless attitude laughing like loons while the team is getting their ass kicked. Not sure if he hides from the media like Delgado does yet.
You Mr Graves9 brought up the war in insulting Mr Delcos or did you forget in your evening stupor. I will remind you of your statement: “If so when are you guys gonna ask him about his putrid defense, hustle and his loser attitude? Oh wait you are a liberal and Delgado’s anti war talk makes him above approach ” So who brought the war into the equation????
Since Reyes and Delgado are so bad, lets make you the manager and you tell me, looking at the roster that Minaya has given you, who is your SS and 1B. You, my friend, would have the same choices as Willie. You have none. And you would play them also.
A little late to the game here, heh, heh, but I have a couple of comments.
1. I have absolutely no problem with Gary Carter campaigning for the job. If you want a job ask for one is my motto. The problem I do have is that he made it public. Never a good idea. And I really don’t care that he campaigned for a job that somebody else has. Let me tell you if I wanted a job and somebody else had it and I knew his manager wasn’t happy with the way things are going I’d go after it in a heartbeat.
2. Whatever you think of Omar Minaya’s skills and Willie’s management skills here is my take. If I am Omar Minaya I probably feel that I have a pretty good team here. And before I lose my job I want the chance to have someone else try to run it better than Willie has appeared to. It may be that I have instead constructed a flawed team, a team that can’t win, but I don’t think so. So I want the chance to prove to myself and to ownership that it can. especially after watching the clubhouse the last couple of days.
That’s my arguement for firing Randolph. The arguements for keeping him may be that the clubhouse is fine, no one else is out there, and Pedro is coming back, who knows.
Question – We here a lot about Heilman going down to the minors lately. Has anyone thought that this just might be the right thing for Jose Reyes too? A little demotion to right the soul? Comments?
I would play Reyes but release Delgado and call up Carp. Either that or give Evans the job. They couldn’t do worse. My point on the whole Delgado issue is since the majority of the media is so liberal is they give passes to guys like Delgado cause of his political stance. Piazza who unlike Delgado was a geat Met and actually cared took some shots from the media cause he was a conservative. While guys like Delcos ignore the way Delgado dogs it his putrid defense asnd his lack of caring about winning or losing. Him being washed up is barely mentioned.
graves9: You didn’t read the rules. You are the manager not the GM. You have the 25 man roster the GM gave you. Carp is not on the roster and the GM has not released Delgado. Who is your first baseman? If you play Evans who is your Left Fielder, the aging and just as bad if not worse than Delgado, Tatis? You have said you’d play Reyes. So how do you make him play any different than Willie has? Look at the team and you will see that the problem is the GM and not the manager.
Both are the problem. Is it really Omar’s fault that Steamboat Willie is the worst in game manager in Baseball? It is partly his fault that Willie can’t motivate this team. I mean why not get mad at the players and sit them after they don’t hustle. He doesn’t do that to Castillo or Delgado. His don’t worry be happy after a loss doesn’t help. He is overly senstitve and paranoid. He says the same thing after every loss no matter how bad. Tip the cap and turn the page we’ll get em tomorrow , we’ll get pay back. He is so laid back that he’s one of the reason this team is so comatose.
You blast Willie but you wouldn’t change SS and you can’t tell us who would be your first baseman? What’s your winning lineup with this roster? And why would it be better than what’s out there now?
Remember now your bench consists of two backup catchers, a RFer who gets dizzy every day, a utility guy who couldn’t get a big league job for 4 years and another one who when he gets to play 2B makes Castillo look good. How you gonna make things better ????
Met bench
Castro
Casanova
Tatis
Easley
Church
Make the team better man…..
I am glad you ignored my comments on how bad of an in game manager he is and how he can’t motivate anyone on this team. Or how the team has taken on his comatose personality.
I didn’t ignore them. I took them to be a response that shows that there’s nothing you can do with this lineup. How do you inspire overpaid, over the hill guys who don’t even have any competition for their jobs? You can’t do it any better than Willie. All the hungry kids were traded away. Message to Jose from Omar. Play like the vets or you’ll be in KC or Minnesota or DC or Pittsburgh with all the other hungry X-Mets.
It is not only the lineup. It is his awful bullpen management his general stubborness his paranoia. Add in him not making the vets accountable for doging it. He honestly has no clue. Like I said Omar needs to go too.
Hey did anybody read abt the Mets intention in the draft? They intend to grab the top prospect at the time of their pick regardless of the organization’s needs so they can trade them away? This is rediculious. This team needs to get younger not older and falling apart.
Well Graves since you can’t improve the lineup, I would suspect you couldn’t improve the pen either. Most of the guys in the pen are really crappy pitchers so i think the strategy anybody could have is pick one from a hat and pray. You say he doesn’t make the vets accountable. I say when your subs aren’t even mediocre there’s no move you can make. Well, whatever, at least this conversation is staying civil.
OS: The story you write about is BS. You aren’t allowed to trade players you just drafted in baseball.
Pulling Delgado or Castillo after they dog it might embarass them into giving a crap. That might be a small chance but still. How many times did Willie stubbornly go to Mota in big spots last year? Or Sosa early this year? I like Heilman but he’s a mess right now and Willie has gone to him in big spots over Smith who has been terrific so far.
