Mets Chat Room: Trying it again edition.

Rained out last night, Johan Santana tries again. It’s a bright, sunny day, but what’s going on with this team hasn’t changed in the last 24 hours.

We are one-quarter into this season, and for as erratic as the Mets have been, they are two games out of first.
It’s a simple question really, do you believe they’ll turn it around or not?
IN A NUTSHELL (Mets, 7, Yankees 4).
Johan Santana pitched a strong game and settled down after Brian Schneider blocked the plate to get the Johnny Damon for the first out in the fourth inning. The offense played well.
IN THE CLUBHOUSE
David Wright on a connection between the meeting and hitting: “It does look good to play well after a meeting.’’
Willie Randolph on the offense: “When we’re hitting like that it takes the pressure off everybody. We haven’t had that in awhile.’’
Brian Schneider on the play at the plate: “I had the plate blocked. The throws were good. Everything happened so quickly.’’
IN-GAME ANALYSIS
1ST INNING: Andy Pettitte strikes out the side and Derek Jeter continues to torment the Mets. NYY 2, Mets 0.
2ND INNING: On the plus side of Alou getting picked off. There’s one less strike out and one less runner to be stranded in scoring position.
3RD INNING: Schneider saves a run. Let’s see if it becomes a wake-up call.
7TH INNING: Mets finally tack on some runs. That’s 10 homers allowed by Santana. Mets 6, NYY 3.
9TH INNING: Billy Wagner works more than an inning for the first time this season to earn his ninth save. Mets 7, NYY 4.
NOTEBOOK
-Ryan Church has hit safely in 16 of 18 road games.
-Johan Santana is 4-0 with a 2.98 ERA lifetime against the Yankees.
-Carlos Beltran has a nine-game hitting streak.
-Moises Alou played his first game at Yankee Stadium after 1,936 career games.
Until we meet tomorrow, have a good night folks.

Wow, impressive inning by the mets. Reyes and Beltran swinging at pitches over there heads to strike out.
I do think they are turning it around, but not the turn around the Metsie are praying for. My book the worst team onety can buy part II will match perfectly with their 75 win season this year.
DC 9er,
“My book the worst team one can buy part II”, maybe but we have here today the Yankees, worst team money can buy part I.
Evidently, they didn’t cover pitching to Jeter in the meeting.-JD
I’m sorry but Santana is over rated. 22 mil a year for this guy, I don’t think so and I don’t want to hear that mets had to make that deal. The book on him last year was his fastball was down and he gives up to many home runs. That is exactly what the mets got.
Hi Metsie tom…. The difference between Yankees and metsies is Yankees were in same boat last year and year before and they turned it around both times, and they are getting the best hitter in baseball back next week. What hope does a Mets fan have for turning things around?
Willie knows his team. Willie said the players need to focus. Well, if this is what you call being focus, good luck Willie.
Alou looked like he was day dreaming like he was on a sandy beach.
DC 9er,
for a guy who claims he is not a yankee fan you sure seem to care what the yankees do. Come on, admit it, your a yankee troll.
The Mets need a kick in the ass…plain and simple…
This team blows…
The Mets are and always will be the SECOND best baseball team in this town…
Billy Wagner for manager babyyy
I hope my team never has a team meeting…...
Why aren’t the metsies and Yankees sharing announcers? Yesterday the Orioles and Nationals shared and we had Palmer and Sutton together. Over 600 wins debating every play was pretty good entertainment.
Looks like they didn’t cover a few things in the meeting.-JD
I just got in. Was the HR a cheap Yankee Stadium homer or was it a Santana change up that went into orbit?
sloppy, it was a change up on a tee to jeter in his wheel house.
DC 9er,
trust me, you don’t want to hear the yankees anouncer. They are the worst in baseball and I’m not saying this because I am a met fan, they really are bad.
Sloppy: Let’s put it this way about the Jeter HR. He should be ashamed if he didn’t hit it out.-JD
It’s true, the yankees are now the number one team in this town but since I’ve been following baseball from the late 60’s to the present. The yankees being the #1 team in new york started in the mid nineties with the yankee championship run which shows me that there are allot of front runners in new york.
I don’t care who manages this team, the talent just is not there. They are too old, and none of the supposed “big gun” guys are the types that can actually carry this team and lift them to anything.
Tomg: You surprised about NY being a front-running town? If would have asked I could have saved you some time coming to that conclusion.-JD
I am listening to them now. Nobody in the world is as bad as our play by play guy Bob Carpenter. He screams on every foul tip like its a grand slam. He kind of has prayer sessions with himself hoping somebody will hit a 9 run homer. The O’s have this ex Met guy Gary Thorne who’s pretty good and I like Palmer and Sutton but Sutton is overwhelmed by this Carpenter guy.
Hey sloppy metsie guy… That homer was just caught by my girlfriend on the mall. she’s doing the museum gig and got a Derek Jeter HR from 500 miles away!!!!!
Reyes is pathetic. This guy is making the same mistakes he made as a rookie, swining at pitches outside of the zone. What a loser. I’m so sick of these guys
Great play by Schneider to block the plate. I don’t miss Lo Duca at all – in any capacity.-JD
RMKMets,
I’m with you on the Reyes front. Reyes has all the talent in the world but nothing between the ears, he is a major disappoint. It’s odd that he starting playing like this since he got benched by Willie last year when he didn’t run out a fly ball.
JD,
“You surprised about NY being a front-running town?” it’s because I’m not a front runner. I am a met, ranger, jet and knicks fan since the late 60’s. I’ll admit, I haven’t followed the knicks as much because there is nothing to follow. Hopefully the new regime will change that situation.
Holy crap!
sloppy = the DC troll. I would never have guessed that one if he/she hadn’t slipped up again. With mel and hollywood josh it was pretty apparent. But I never thought for a second he was DC.
sloppy, that’s pretty low of you!! How many other names do you have besides:
mel
DC (and DC 9er)
Hollywood josh
I think you need professional help, sloppy.
Tomg: Used to like watching the DeBusschere and Frazier Knicks. That was a real team.-JD
If these guys blow ths inning after the way Pettite went 3-0 on Easley and is now behind on Schneider they should just quit now. I won’t even mention that pathetic AB by the washed up loser Delgado.
RMKMets: You just did.-JD
JD,
Those were the good old days.
We are witnessing the birth of an offensive juggernaut.-JD
He’s not the old Andy today, is he….....
To Tomg: They could bring the ball up court, take nearly the whole 24, and not take more than four or five dribbles the whole time.-JD
Three runs is better than none, but they could have had five or six.-JD
JD,
That was a fundamentally sound team offensively/defensively without a doubt.
...and Jerry Lucas would be coming off the bench, the Manhattan yellow pages firmly embedded in his brain.
Tomg: Remember the game when they scored the last 19 points to beat the Bucks? When the Pearl was on his game, the net would barely move when he hit a shot.-JD
Tiffany: Marv would call the shot Lucas took from the top of the key a Lucas Lay-up.-JD
Frazier…to Monroe…back to Frazier…Bradley top of the key…YES!!!
JD, yes I do because that bucks team had Jabar and oscar robernson so they were a very good team.
Here we go, alou was hit by the pitch. Do I hear the word DL.
Every time I see the trainer even look at Alou, I get this bad feeling.-JD
That’s five left on in two innings. Who doesn’t think that’s not going to come back to bite them in the butt?-JD
Delgado in two innings in a row strands 5 base runners, where is Steve C., Delgado favorite fan.
Holy smokes, I can’t believe what my eyes just saw, Jose has found his head after all, it’s about time.
now I can understand how the yankees hit home runs. That right field is a joke. Both those home runs would not have been home runs at shea.
Dc9r – Sloppy – Whatever – I feal so cheated!!!
What is going on? I am watching game cast and after Giambi’s homer – Nothing. Is this the longest pitching change in history or what?
clm, no pitching change, the mets are up in the eighth. Game cast is sometimes very flaky and behind on real time.
Tomg – Yeah you got it. I reloaded and magically Castillo is on 1st base. Friggin’ Fox!!! Who needs to see the Red sox. Even with MLB Extra Innings I cannot get this game because of them.
MLB should note that if I pay $150 to see my Metsies then dammit I want my Metsies!!!
Thanks!!!
Second time this year (wow) a Mets’ pitcher goes to the 8th!!! Save that bullpen!!!
Santana is on a pace to break his total home runs given up which was 23, he now has given up 11 this year, ridiculous.
JD – On gamecast you can’t tell if they are playing a good game or just getting lucky. How do they look? Same old team or did something click? Here’s hopin’?
Jeez – Right after I make those comments another homer!!1
The Mets should have had 10 runs this game. They left men on like three innings in a row and nobody could get a big hit. Santana has given up three home runs today. The book on him last year was his velocity was down and given up allot of home runs. it looks like the book was accurate on him.
wow, willie brought in wagner in the eighth with two outs and wagner throws three pitches and gets the out. Hopefully wagner can pitch a 1,2, 3 inning in the ninth.
heres hopin part 2. could use more runs – seen this movie b4. not always a happy endin
To CLM: Offense looks much better after a slow start. Defense was good today. Since they got those, they can live with Santana giving up three homers.-JD
A RBI single and a fist pump from Delgado. All is right with the world this afternoon.-JD
Nice hit by Delgado…
Delgado has come through!!!! The universe has turned!!!!
who’s that guy? was that beltran and delgado combining for a run?
they do perform better away from shea
Who made the last out in the seventh for the Yanks? I don’t recall.
jd – thanks. all is right for today – still until that last out!?
tif – matsui – last out
Matsui was the last out in the eighth.
Who’s Duncan pinch-hitting for? I don’t remember.
The metsies sure shut me up today. I need to find a better way to spend my time.
Nice win for Santana, Willie and the team – ‘It’s in the Book – tomorrow OP meets CMW. Now to the Preakness…
Keep the yankees down boys, keep them down.
tiffany – duncan hit for gonsalez. nice thing about gamecast is it’s all right there for you. the only nice thing.
In all honesty, I can’t recall. I don’t doubt your version of these events, it’s just that I don’t remember.
dc9r – you still make me laugh even after you’ve been outed if that’s really you
good game ang g’night everybody
To answer the question: yes, I believe the Mets will turn it around. Though that could just be the fan in me speaking.
Love all the objective commenting by you Delcos. Jabs and potshots equals objectivity apparently. I guess I have a few things to learn.
Yesterday was a really good sports day in several venues.
The Mets/Yankees game was competitive up until the last out and two important pitchers gave it their all. Both teams played well. Now is the time for Willie to name David the Captain – he is certainly qualified and has all the necessary attributes.
Lorena Ochoa, the LPGA’s best golfer by far (and the nicest person, too) is where she belongs – on top of the leaderboard. Cool, calm and capable, she should stay there all day.
Big Brown – a horse owned by a conglomerate, trained by a lifelong racetracker, and ridden by a Louisiana jockey – rolled to an easy win in the Preakness over a field of also rans who are not even in his class – he’s got Nureyev on his sire side. Can he win the Belmont? – maybe, maybe not. I think he can make the distance – a mile and a half – on a good track, but if it rains and the track goes to sloppy, probably not.
Metsfan: I would say more than a few things.-JD
Lets hope that losing 3 of 4 at home to the Nationals proves to be the “rock bottom” point of the season. When this team plays with passion and focus, as they did yesterday, they are good! When they don’t, they are a .500 or slightly better team.

Santana and Wagner both made me sweat yesterday, but the Mets ground it out for a win. I’m not too confident about tonight, however.
How come Castro wasn’t the DH, especially with a lefty on the mound? He would seem to make a lot more sense than Easley, who proved while Castillo was out that he’s not the best everyday hitter.
I guess this sporadic rain throughout the whole weekend is why they went with the doubleheader next time, but I would think it would make more sense to play the game on Monday so the rotations aren’t screwed.
