Mets Chat Room: Team has own chat room.

May
16

Manager Willie Randolph said he called this afternoon’s team meeting. Randolph said he was “disappointed’’ in how his 20-19 Mets were playing. GM Omar Minaya said the same thing and when asked whether the manager’s job was in jeopardy, said: “No.’’

Randolph cited the team’s hitting as the most significant problem, and said, “we are what we are … I have confidence we’ll get better.’’

Carlos Delgado and David Wright said there was no division in the clubhouse. And, Billy Wagner made it clear he was not singling out Delgado.

Delgado said the meeting was beneficial, “because things needed to be addressed sooner than later.’’

Of course, it all boils down to playing, and that begins tonight.

well at least they are talking.

it is an improvement from last year when they never had a meeting.

by the way how did willie score the all star game?

  2. JK

JD—In your experience, is Delgado usually available to answer questions from reporters after games? Never? Sometimes? Always?

Since your sitting in the rain, I know you don’t like interleague play but for teams like Pittsburgh out here on the years they get to host the Yankees or the Red Sox or the Indians it is a major financial boom for them. 3 straight sellouts doesn’t happen for them for any National League team. But its a guarantee for those 3 teams. Even when the Mets had a chance to clinch in Pittsburgh in 2006 PNC Park was not sold out. I’m sure the Sox/Yanks are also guarantee sell outs for all the small market teams in the NL. Money talks more than tradition as you well know.

I just heard on our game that you metsies are afraid to play in the rain tonite, you can watch us pick up another half game on you instead. I think that Figgy guy lit a fire under us instead of you…. Thanks Metsies, we’ll be seeing you in the standings real soon.
Good nite Metsies love and kisses

JK: Sometimes you have to wait for him, but if you ask a question he will answer. I don’t think Wagner was singling him out. He raised his hand in a sweeping motion, and I think it was interpreted that his was point toward Delgado. Wagner said he made a point of talking with Delgado. I’ve seen Delgado get testy before, and I don’t think he was angry with Wagner.=JD

Gary Cohen always complains about interleague play. The complaints he makes make me think he is stupid. He always complains that some of the matchups are not compelling. As if there were a way to have interleague play but at the same time only have compelling matchups. Lots of intraleague matchups aren’t compelling either, but they still play them. Its called a schedule. The Phils just took an 8-0 lead on Toronto (grand slam by Werth, his 2nd hr of the game). There’s nothing wrong with a baseball game between the Royals and Marlins. 2 major league teams playing a game that counts in the standings. What’s the problem?

  7. dave

the problem is rivalries are born from familiarity. if the phils kick our ass for a couple of years it is a rivalry. you meet a team 2 times every few years who cares?

as jd keeps asking who do we hate. most here say no one. because there are no good teams who spank us.

besides the AL doesnt play baseball. a player should play both ways. you can be a good hitter but if you cant field that is a decision. ig you are a pitcher who throws at ppl you should get your turn.

there is symmetry to the game and the AL doesnt have that.

  8. Taylor

There are lots of games that aren’t rivalries. You care if you want your team to make the playoffs. The games count. That’s why you care. You have to have all of these random matchups to balance the schedule for the rivalry games.

The DH debate is a separate matter. Pitchers hitting doesn’t really do anything for me and any pitcher who intentionally throws at a batter should be suspended for 10 games period.

  9. DC 9er

Man, I was wrong again! I’m a loser!

  10. Mike C.

Well, the good news is that extra off-days tend to squeeze small bursts of offense outta Delgado Castillo and to a lesser extent Alou.

For a game or two, their debilitations are merely nagging and they can hit a bit again.

So… maybe they can get in two solid games against the Yankees, now, and at least hit when the public eye is most on ‘em.

I don’t know, maybe that would turn the morale around?

  11. JK

JD, thanks for the reply. It is good to know that Wagner was apologetic and that Delgado didn’t seem to be mad. The last thing this team needs is for disunity to contaminate any good chemistry they may have.

  12. clm

When the NY press starts in on a jo watch you better watch out. Willie better get it together soon. This will become self-fullfilling very soon.

No offense to JD here but these guys are tenacious (is that how you spell it). And it is starting to landslide. Went from the fan blogs to Marchand at the Sun and now all the papers. Willie needs to go on a 45-10 run ala Bobby Valentine or he will be the former manager of the NY Mets.

Problem is – Who would take his place?

  13. Tiffany

It was so refreshing to see them emerge from their closed-door meeting with their on-message soundbites rehearsed to a tee. I was delighted to learn that the media had quoted Wagner out of context, since he never motioned towards Delgado’s locker (stupid reporters!) and a tear came to both eyes when I heard Delgado explain how “a family emergency” had caused him to leave the clubhouse immediately following Thursday’s loss.

Good to see that there are no problems in that clubhouse. Just dumb reporters and family emergencies. Let’s go Mets!

  14. Dan Gurney

Just win some games and people will forget clubhouse dissent/is Randolph in jeopardy. Win the series and let the heat fall on the last place Yankees. Have Santana pitch a shutout and ask Hank what he thought of his performance the way a reporter asked Tommy Lasorda what he thought of Dave Kingman’s three home run performance in 1976 (an edited version appears on the Rhino CD “Baseball’s Greatest Hits”).
But lose and face even more heat. Maybe it’s not fair since there are 500,000 things in this world more important than a game but people come to New York should know how intense it will be.

  15. tomg

    Tiffany,

I thought the same thing when I saw Wagner’s response yesterday. It’s called damage control and spin it in a opposite direction.

  16. tomg

The mets should look down I95 towards Philadelphia and there they will see a major league baseball team with Character, heart and passion. The mets could learn from the Phillies. Met fans know the Mets don’t have character, heart and passion. Willie will disagree but than Willie knows his team.

  17. Doug

For all that heart Philly has, seems to me they are only what, 1.5 games up after playing 4 more games then the Mets.
