Why do you hate the Yankees?

May
15

As a Mets’ fan, are the Yankees your natural enemy, or is it somebody else? The Phillies? The Braves? Or does it vary from year to year?

But, what is it about the Yankees that makes you hate them so?

Is it the sense of entitlement from their fans? Is it the arrogance of some of their players? Is it George Steinbrenner? Or Hank?

There has to be a reason or an event that turned you off to that team. What was it?

    It's still the Braves.

I hate most Yank fans, but they have really become insignificant lately.

    Phillies? Not buyin it.

    I really hate/fear the Braves.

  2. DC 9er

Can I help the little Metsies with this one?
    10. The little Metysies hate the fact that the Yankees get the most back pages of the NYC rags.
    9. The little Metsies don't like the fact that there are so many people wearing Yankee hats and so few people wearing Metsie hats.
8…The little Metsies can't stand the fact that the Yankees go to the playoffs 14 years in a row, or something like that, while the Metsies hardly ever go to the playoffs.
    7. The little Metsies hate the Yankees for having so many Hall of Famers while the Metsies have all of 1.
    6. The little Metsies hate the Yankees because the Yankees don't have to play in a parking lot.
    5. The little Metsies hate the Yankees because the Yankee owner is proud he owns the Yankees while the Metsie owner wishes he owned the Dodgers.
    4. The little Metsies hate the Yankees because the Yankees are their # 1 rival but the Yankees spit on that because the Yankees save their hatred for the Red Sox.
    3. The little Metsies hate the Yankees because Yankee fans don't think the Metsies are lowlifes, the Yankee fans know it.
    2. The little Metsies hate the Yankees because when the Metsies had their chance they blew it in the World Series against the Yankees and their best player Mike Pizza was too chicken to beat up Roger Clemens when Clemens threw a bat at him.
AND THE # 1 REASON the little Metsies HATE THE YANKEES is because as it always has been and as it is today and as it always will be as long as their is baseball in the city of New York, the Metsies will always be the # 2 team in NYC and there ain't nothing the little Metsies can ever do to change it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Metsies # 2 forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

The Braves are definitely first on the hate-list.

Southern culture is running and ruining our country with little to no real explanation toward their success other than the fact that if you have the ignorant with you, you probably win by sheer numbers.

The inexplicable long-term success of the Braves overlaps perfectly with that little nugget of truth.

    The Yankees?

Their fans don't know a damn thing about the game, they only pull out their hats when their team is up by twenty games their division…

The whole 200,000,000 dollars worth of hired-gun home run hitters who can't field thing.

The way the NYC press will make the back page of all the rags about if A-Roids sneezes but a ten-game Mets winning streak would maybe get squeezed between the OTB results and the hockey scores.

The question is not why one would dislike the Yankees.

The question would be… other than a sheer and craven desire to front-run, what in God's name would make a person root for the Yankees?

    As for the Phillies, c'mon.

They're like our crazy violent racist uncle that came home from the 'Nam not quite right… annoying, sure, but sometimes just so ridiculous that you can't look away.

  4. Mike C.

ALSO: the AL-style of baseball is basically the short-bus version of baseball… dumbed down and boring.

    Station-to-station bullcrap.

  5. Leonwestbrook

I don't hate the yankees as a Team or an organization. Granted there have been excellent Yankee teams and their farm system is the best in baseball.

I hate the yankees because a vast majority of their fans are arrogant, rude and classless. Most of them are bandwagoners who have no knowledge about the yankees other than the fact that they started to win World Series again back in 1996.

Most of them were not around in the 1980's when the Yankees stunk.

There is not mistake that the Yankees are number one in this town, I don't care that we don't get the back pages. I will keep on rooting for the Mets.

  6. Churchrules

The Yankees are the Yankees. There is absolutely nothing we can do about the coverage they get. Let the NY press fawn all over A-Rod and Jeter. It is what it is. We're not going to change that. And remember – a fan is a fan no matter what their team does or does not do during any particular outing. Let's show our resilience people. The next few days are going to be a challenge. Don't give in and bash the Yankees. It just makes us look bad. Mets fans are better than that.

  7. dave

I don't like the yankees but never hated them. i like some of their players notably jeter who plays the right way and mariano. george is a blustery fool and his son is an idiot.

there is no team in our division i fear and so cannot hate them for doing us in.

you keep mentioning we are a championship team. that is how i feel altho it looks more and more like we are a flawed team that will not win.

there is time to come together, but the fans need to get off their backs and they need to play with passion.

  8. Dan Gurney

My main dislike (I don't want to use the H word) tends to be our strongest opponent at the time: Cubs under Leo Durocher in the late 1960s, Cards under the White Rat in the 1980s, Braves ten years ago. Maybe the Phillies now although I'll take Jimmy Rollins on my team anyday and I am amazed Jamie Moyer still takes the ball every fifth day. The Yankees? Probably their overbearing fans..must of them like Mike Francesa who can't even bend over to tie his shoelaces but thinks they are great athletes. The players and front office at least have some right to be arrogant: they won the 26 championships, 39 pennants, most names on the Mitchell report yadayadayada. Steinbrenner and his elder son (does this guy look like Frankenstein's monster?)
are mostly bombastic arrogant cowards although George can be charitable ("it's his bribe" as one person describes Willie Stark in "All the King's men"). But George is proof that good guys seldom triumph (why couldn't Bowie Kuhn have thrown him out when he got caught in Watergate? Because George was slick enough to high the Beltway's best lawyer Edward Bennett Williams to drop subtle hints about baseball's reserve clause being in jeopardy).

At least with the "strongest opponent is my main dislike" policy, the Gnats will never be it. Nick Johnson will break Ripken's consecutive game streak before they are the top team in the league.
But let's face it: jealousy has to enter into the equation. Why can't we ever get a 5 year run like they had in the late 1990s, late 70s or early 1960s?

  9. TJ

As a Mets fan, I find that most of the time, the Mets are my natural enemy =/

  10. benny blanco from da bronx

It's thier fans. They're so incredibly annoying. It's incredibly hard to even have a general baseball discussion without sensing their sense of d-bagness and without wanting to choke them.

The Steinbrenners, well I don't mind too much because as much as their opinions are pretty annoying, they do genuinely want to win and as a fan you really cannot ask for any more than that.

As a tiny little kid I loved the Mets then 1996 happened and the 9 year old version of me fell in love with the Yankees and became a Yankee fan, upon entering my pre-teen years around 1999 I got tired and bored of the Yankees winning all the time and became a Mets fan again. My fandom has gotten worse and worse every year.
I don't know what the point of that story was but I guess it says something about me switching away from the Yankees after rooting for them for a little while.

  11. benny blanco from da bronx

I have no respect for alot of Yankee fans. They only know about 20 players in the entire major leagues and they all wear pinstripes.
I used to do a little thing back in the days where I would ask a random Yankee fan in the street to name me the Yankees 3B and got some outrageous answers like Derek Jeter and Bernie Wiliams, one time the person who guessed wrong had an A-Rod shirt… its THAT bad.

And I cannot stand Yankee fans bringing up things that happened before my 91 year old Grandmother (R.I.P) was even born. I don't talk about 1986 for the Mets because I wasn't even born yet. New rule: If your not born when it happens, you can't talk trash. And also, talking trash should only be allowed between the month of October till November the next year, then no more flaunting the championship. Because obviously you lost the following season.

  12. Luca Brasi

"Southern culture is running and ruining our country with little to no real explanation toward their success other than the fact that if you have the ignorant with you, you probably win by sheer numbers."

Mike C, please elaborate on this comment…I'd really like to know what you are getting at…

  13. DC 9er

At least with the "strongest opponent is my main dislike" policy, the Gnats will never be it

Cute danny boy but i think when we meet in September and the overpaid, overhyped, overbooed and overstressed out Metsies need to win 3 of 3 to finish ahead of us lowly, poor, pathetic, inept Nats we will be your only rival because the rest of the league will be laughing in your face for our 140 million payorll and 75 win season…..

Just remember, we are your future…an omar destroyed system with over rated players on the roster and a farm system with nobody with even AA talent. You will be reliving the 79-82 era all over again except with a fan base so nasty and irritable that not even overpaying will bring a free agent into zombie field as a stop gap measure.
We suck but we sure know how to ruin your seasons don't we Danny Boy…...

By the way I just love the clubhouse environment in the Queens dump. I bet those Metsies love to be in the clubhouse as much as they love to be on their home field.

You Metsies don't have to hate any team because you are so good at hating yourselves…...Plasyers, fans its all the same….. Hate metsies hate metsies…..
Billy poison Wagner… Destroyed the Astros, destroyed the Phillies and destroyed the Metsies….. Big talk and September loser…. As that very cute Yankee owner would say of him…. Mr May II…..

  14. Metsie

I wonder why Yankee fans worry so much about the Mets.

If your favorite team is supposedly so high and mighty with your 26 titles and the Mets are supposedly so far inferior, why do you worry about the Mets so much?

Why did Steinbrenner worry so much about the Mets?

Peter Luger doesn't worry about Sizzler
Tiffany doesn't worry about some crappy jewelry store on Canal St.

No matter what, the Yankees won all those rings in the 90's with so many former Mets on their roster…along with a former Mets manager.

Funny how the Yankees haven't won anything since all the former Mets are gone.

Oh and like others said, most Yankee fans no nothing about what happened pre mid 90's

  15. Jon

In the 9th grade, the Yankees started getting good and all the bandwagon fans needed a Mets fan to torment. I was their target. Have hated them ever since.

However, after living in NY for a few years, I hate the Red Sox and their fans even more. At least Yankee fans are NY fans.

  16. Maine Event

Yankee fans like DC 9er is one of the main reasons many Mets fans hate the Yankees. Honestly, we're in completely different leagues, I don't have any problem with the Yankees, I don't even root against them. Why do you yankee fans have to bash the Mets? Is it that you guys are self conscious, and therefore feel to need to mock teams that don't have the same history as you? Its unnecessary, and when Yankee fans continue to throw it in our face how much better they are, and mostly do it unprokingly, that is when we have problems. But for the most part, the Yankee are of no concern to us Mets fans, as well they shouldn't be with the way our team is playing right now.

  17. Ceetar

I hate the Yankees, because they act entitled. It's not surprise that their fans act the same way. There is no such thing as the "Yankee way" and they're aren't a more clean, professional team than anyone else. Maybe actually less than everyone else.

  18. Jon B

because from 1996 to 2000, 80% of your fan base walked around cocky as hell and talking so much smack and from 2000 to now, those same 80% will look you in the face and tell you that they were not "like those other idiot Yankee fans".

Also, stop talking about things being the "Yankee way" and "Yankee pride"...stop, just please stop. We all see through that madness. You employ overpaid, whiney, drug abusers like the rest of the league, your Owner is a raving, immature lunatic and you've bread a legion of fans that truly believe "it's the Yankee way to expect a world series and nothing less".

I dont' hate the great players and minds that have come through the organization in recent years, like Jeter and Rivera and Bernie Williams…Torre and Stick Michael. I hate the "recent fan". The moron that your organization has developed by brainwashing them to believe they are part of something special.

  19. Joe L

i live in syracuse, ny and can't seem to get away from yankee propaganda. bumper stickers, t-shirts that brag about how many ws titles, the countless amount of bars with neon yankees bar signs (i have yet to encounter a neon mets bar sign anywhere in central new york – and what's even more sad is that red sox bar signs (and red sox bars for that matter) outnumber the mets here and this is freaking new york state). walk into any sporting goods store or sports merchandise store, and you're immediately bombarded with yankee jerseys and shirts AND red sox jerseys and shirts. it's rare you will ever see a mets jersey displayed anywhere. but the thing that upsets me the most is how the yankees are always given priority over the mets in the local newspaper. even if the yankees end up losing the night before, they'll still get priority on the front of the sports page and the mets are lucky enough to get a few paragraphs on page 5 or whatever.

  20. Derek

I hate the "Yankees fan", you know, the arrogant shmucks who think that their team is beyond question the greatest thing ever and will spout off 26 championships anytime you say anything remotely objective about the Yankees, yet can't name the starting First Baseman before Tino Martinez.

But really, they're a distant third on the "Hate List", well behind the Phillies and the Braves.

  21. John

First off hate is too strong a word. We are just talking baseball here. More than anything what I dislike about the yankees, is their fans. If you gave most baseball fans truth serum they have a respect for guys like Jeter and Bernie Williams and a great respect for the Yankee history and place in the history of the sport, but when the neanderthals start to run their mouth about their team without thinking, it becomes very difficult to like anything about the whole Yankee way.

  22. JK

I don't hate the Yankee players. It's their owners and their fans who are obnoxious. Yankee fans are especially delusional and totally out of touch with reality. They will make up things to fit their fictional reality if need be—like the caller to the FAN who said the Yankees own Santana even though the opposite is true. Or the Yankee fans who think the Mitchell Report was some big conspiracy. Or those who are in total denial regarding the taint to their teams' WS titles over the last decade.

Sure, there are some Yankee fans who are objective and rational, but a good portion of their fan base takes the cake for the most delusional fans in the country.

As for the Yankee owners, King George and Hankie have done more to escalate ticket prices, payrolls, and fan costs than any other ownership group in baseball. They're also unbelievably arrogant (Hankie took credit for Mussina's turnaround) and as delusional as their fan base. Hankie, despite all evidence to the contrary, is in denial about his team's heavy taint due to PEDs.

  23. el jefe

I've been a Mets fan for 40 years. The hatred for the Yankees came with Steinbrenner and his "win now at all costs, go out and buy the best free agents, we'll worry about next year next year". Unfortunately that's what the Mets have become. No Met has been with the team for five years. Reyes and Heilman have the longest tenure on the team. This is what you get when you sign the mercenaries. I was against the Santana trade and still am. I'd rather watch a bunch of rookies play exciting ball, try hard, and lose; than watch a bunch of overpaid players play lazy .500 baseball.
The Mets have become the Yankees, except the Mets don't win.

  24. Peter

Don't hate the Yankess…but do hate those Yankee fans who can't come to grips when they stink and fall back on saying something like, "Yeah, well how many titles do you have?" Jeez, that's just annoying. Can you at least acknowledge it when you stink sometimes and stop living off the glory of teams that you weren't even alive to see?

  25. Salty

After last year, the Phillies surpassed the Yankees as my most hated team. However, I don't hate these teams for their players as much as I hate them for their fans.

    – STOP LIVING IN THE PAST. When I point out the fact that the Yankees aren't playing well or they just lost a series to a bad team, etc… all I get are responses reminding me of their "26 World Championships!". I don't give a shit. You haven't won diddly since 2000 and even then most of your players were on P.E.D.'s. Get over yourself.
    – The "big brother" mentality and false sense of superiority that Yankee fans have. Yes, your team has a successful history. No, I don't give a shit.
    – Complete lack of knowledge about any of the Yankee "non-stars". The Yankees have the highest percentage of fans who know nothing about their favorite team. That is a fact based on trigonometry and chemistry experiments. Try asking that pretty little thing in the Pink Yankee hat and Jeter jersey who Morgan Ensberg is. Or Ross Ohlendorf. It is sad when I know more about your favorite team than you do, Yankee fans.
    – Their breath. Yankee fans have the worst smelling breath in the history of baseball fans. Also validated through chemistry experiments.

  26. Oleg

So many people are saying the same thing. I, too do not have anything against the Yankees as a team or organization. I hate the fans – the classless obnoxious people who are mostly bandwagon fans who jumped on in the mid-late 90's. Yanks are a great team and deserve plenty of recognition for what they've done in their division over the past 12-13 years. Their fans, though, need a reality check! Bunch of morons!

  27. Drew

As has been repeated here already, the thing I dislike most about the Yankees is their fans – who, most of the time, like the Yankees for no reason other than the fact that they won a lot, and have no real baseball knowledge.

I was in NYC in 2006 for the NLCS, and watched Game 1 at a bar in Brooklyn. The bar was filled with Mets fans, except for one Yankees fan who proceeded to tell everyone how the Mets sucked and the Yankees owned everyone – even after the Yanks had already been eliminated from the playoffs.

It's that kind of arrogance that makes me dislike the Yankees, although the Philles are first on my hated list and then the Braves. The Yankees can't even win my dislike contest.

  28. steve

    I don't hate the Yankees.
I do, however, hate some Yankee fans.

And it's nice to know I'm not alone thinking that.

  29. Steve

I have two favorite teams. The Mets and anyone that plays the Yankees. It has nothing to do with the players (the Yankee teams immediately preceding Clemens were very hard not to root for). It has nothing to do with the owner, senses of entitlement, money spent or newspaper coverage. It is all about fan interaction. Mention Jose Reyes, and you will hear about Jeter's 4 World Series rings. Mention Wagner, and you will hear about Rivera being the greatest of all time. Etc. Etc. Mets fans and Yankees fans cannot be together without some bragging, defending, etc. Even Yankee fans that also "root" for the Mets, can't mention the Mets in a breath without mentioning the Yankees too. In the end, I root for the Mets and anyone that plays the Yankees, because tonight I will be in a room with some Yankee fans and I need to have the emotion behind my "debating" persona.

  30. Daniel W

The enemy for Mets fans over the last 15 years or so has been the Braves, although we don't like the Phillies or any of the other teams in the division either. I have no problem with the Yankees themselves, but how do you think a group of fans would react as a result to having to hear year in and year out that they are stupid for liking a team that doesn't win every year, or how the Yankees have so many more championships. This is not the only reason to like a team, I have loved the Mets through good and bad, and it has been fun to see some Yankee fans I know jump on and off the bandwagon, and even badmouth A-Rod. If you guys don't want one of the best players in baseball, we will take him for you. Its this front-running fan attitude that Mets fans particularly hate, and not necessarily the team itself. It's just a product of the fans.

  31. Bob

It's not the Yankees I hate, it's Yankee fans who project the Yankees winning image onto themselves because they are such losers.

  32. Larry

I actually find the hatred or contempt between fans a little dumb especially since a majority of the players fraternize with each other during batting practice. It's not like the 1970s when there was legitimate animosity between the Red Sox and Yankees. Of course alcohol and the willingness of people to flex their beer muscles adds to it as well.

  33. Tim

I certainly don't hate the yankes. Most of my friends are yankees fans, but some yankees fans in the late 90's had a holier than thou attitude. These handful of fans made it harder for me to root for the yankees.

  34. Mike

It's not the Yankees that I hate. I don't necessarily mind them as a team. I just can't stand Yankee fans and the ridiculous sense of entitlement they feel. They think it is their birth right to go to the playoffs every year, and that they should win the World Series every year as well. They act as though they actually had something to do with their team's success. No, you root for the winningest franchise in sports history. That does not, however, make YOU a winner.

Most of the people that fit this description are the bandwagon jumpers who came aboard in the mid 90s, who I have no respect for. Generally, these people are the most vocal and obnoxious. I don't have a problem really with the true Yankee fans, as they are somewhat more level-headed and less obnoxious, but this class of fan has completely transformed me from someone who grew up in the 80s a die hard Mets fan but had a soft spot for the Yankees as well, to one who despised them because of the behavior of their fans.

That said, the Yankees are a distant third on my list of hatred, behind the Phillies and Braves. Because really, for the most part, the Mets-Yankees rivalry is pretty insignifcant.

  35. Andy

Look at DC 9er's posts. That's why we all hate the Yankees.

  36. Dana Brand

If you go to my website, metsfanbook.com, and click on the link "Yankee Hatred," you'll get my take on why Mets fans hate the Yankees. I won't take up your space by reprinting it here. It's a complex thing, and not a mean thing. But it is a central part of being a Mets fan. As I say "it intensifies the experience of Mets love" and it gets to the heart of why people choose to be Mets fans and not Yankees fans. Yankee Hatred is a generous and realistic philosophy of life shared by many, if not all Mets fans.

  37. RBWizard

I have been a Mets fan since 1969, without fail. But I must say that I do not hate the Yankees. They have an enviable record of success. But envy is a sin I try to avoid.

"Love thy neighbor but beat them at every given opportunity"

  38. Gina P

In our family, the Yanks only register as much as any other team out of our division. There is only indifference, no love, no hatred. No comparison whatsoever to the level of feelings we have toward the Phils or Braves. That's intense :)

  39. stats1203

I'm not a yankee hater but I can tell you why many Mets fans hate them. Simply because of Yankee fans like DC9er who answer blog questions that are directed towards Mets fans with obnoxiousness like that. They seem to worry more about our team than theirs because they are insecure and weak. They're scared the Mets may one day be #1 here (like it was in the 80s)I know some true Yankee fans who have been down since before Derek Jeter and they're usually not like this. It's these new ones who don't know what it's like to not make the playoffs for a year or two and think they are entitled to a championship every year that annoy us. It's the sad, scared, narrow minded, pompous yankee fans I hate, not the good ones (and there actually are some).

  40. Andrew33

as a yankee fan, i hate yanke fans like that dc 9er guy, but hey, there are plenty of annoying met/redsox fans just like him

  41. carpathia

i was born in 1986 and raised a yankee fan. luckily for me i was able to witness the dynasty teams. have i been spoiled with success? a little bit, yeah. all i really demand as a fan is that the team have a realistic shot at the playoffs every year. thats it. if i am going to pay outrageous prices to support the yankees then i demand a winning product. is that unreasonable? i would like to think i am one of the yankee fans that met fans would say 'oh hes alright' to. i don't root against the mets unless the Yankees play them and whatever anti-met comments i have i usually reserve to family members who are met fans and know i am joking around. speaking for real though, both fan bases are pretty similar. yankee and met fans both have high expectations, are quick to criticize, and are very passionate about their team.

  42. caryn

The reason I hate the Yankees? That their fans are so devoid of life or personality that they think it's a great use of their time to hang out on a METS blog for the sole purpose of trashing them. I wish I had that much free time.

That I can see on any given night at Shea gaggles of Yankees fans in full Yankees regalia, cheering on whoever our opponent is. I GUARANTEE you that there are not dozens of Mets fans in Jose Reyes and David Wright jerseys walking around Yankee Stadium when the Yankees are playing, oh, the kansas city royals, and rooting on the opposing team just because they're the opposing team.

they're not at shea because they're with friends. they're at shea, together as a group, because their mindset is such that they think it's a good thing to do with their time and money.

    that says everything.

  43. DC 9er

ONLY ANDY UNDERSTANDS: For you you richter guys, I was speaking from first hand knowledge as a former little Metsie who was lucky enough to escape.

  44. Andy

    Is that Lenny Harris? Weird.

  45. Lenny Harris

    Who you calling weird Andy?

  46. Andy

    You, Lenny. Just you.

  47. Lenny Harris

    Gotcha Andy…..
