Mike C: Love the optimism. But this is far from a championship quality pitchng staff. Not with there being basically two dependable starters and a closer that you know will end up blowing up at the most inopportune times. Not with there being one of their counted upon setup men having a huge confidence problem and their other one still feeling their way thru their comeback from injury. And regarding their hitting, until Beltran, Wright, and Reyes become consistently good and play up to their baseball cards, this hitting will be in a shambles. There is only so much Willie can do in that case. However, I do think Willie will be the one that goes if this thing doesn't turn around in the next 30 days...i'm tired of him constantly protecting his players. His excuse for Castillo that "he probably wouldn't have scored anyway," was so out of line...who cares? He didn't hustle. Why isn't Willie telling him or the press that he should be writing out a big fat check to his favorite charity? He let Delgado loaf too last year without even a mention of it. It's the lax attitude that Willie has that is so frustrating. Not to mention his lack of defending the players when they really need to be defended!!! Like arguing with an umpire!!! I think Willie is the one that needs an attitude adjustment and pretty quickly, or Omar will be making the adjustment for him.

Willie had a pretty good team and payroll. Didn't see him in the playoffs.

You don't make the playoffs 12 years in a row by luck.

I think Joe Torre Light is a pretty good description of Willie. And I think Joe Torre is the luckiest guy in the world to have had the club and payroll he had to work with for all of those years.

When did it become acceptable to denigrate Joe Torre? The guy has won multiple championships and his Yankee teams always made the playoffs. It's easy to say he benefitted from the Yankee payroll, but I didn't see the Mets in the playoffs last year. The bottom line is that there were times when it looked like the Yankees were going to rip apart at the seams and it never did because Torre kept it together. Plus, look at what he's done with the Dodgers. IMO, Joe Torre is exactly what this team needs.

Do not insult Mr. Torre, who is going to the HOF as a manager, by calling Willie "Joe Torre Light."

If your closer is the one standing up and talking about being disgusted with the way the team plays that is a problem b/c it means there is no team leader.

After this latest explicitive stuff from Wagner and the fact that it was noted that last yr the bench guy (Marlon Anderson-who wasn't even on the team until mid-yr) was calling team meetings, it is clear that there is no leadership.

You can have the greatest collection of people (no matter the business, baseball, or otherwise), but if no one leads, you don't move toward your goals.

I think Joe C is all wrong in regards to Billy Wagner. From what I can see Wagner has always stood up and faced the media - even when he's blown games. The guy to me is a throwback. We need more guys like him.

I continue to feel that the Mets will NEVER win with Randolph as their manager. He doesn't bring much to the table and he certainly does not seem to have the respect of this team. How much longer are we going to have to have him manage this club? Worse yet, in midseason, who could we get to replace him? I continue to miss Bobby V. Does anyone out there believe he would not have found a way to get this team into the playoffs last year?

the problem is the bench. the bench is filled with role players. no one is there who could play their way into a starter.

we cut the only player who fit that description.

this is omars fault. he built the team. u can make the case for anderson and easley individually, we have church in right and pagan on dl, but logically there should be someone who can play first or second who can take a job and they dont exist.

I hate to say it but the Mets are over-hyped and over-estimated...with expectations set way too high by a constantly hyperventilating NY media that goes bonkers over a $130M payroll of de-roided and de-fanged use-to-bes. Signing Santana doesn't make up for:
- Aging broken down veteran pitchers (El Duke / Pedro)
- Listless, overpaid and declining vets (Delgado, Castillo)
- Broken down players (Alou, Castro)
- Mentally broken SS
- helllooo Endy, anybody home?
- Beyond godawful bullpen - at least the 3 guys most relied upon in terms of IP and appearances.
- Pathetic pitching management. Is the 100 pitch limit an actual MLB rule or just a Little League guideline that somebody thought was a good idea? What the he!! are they protecting - the integrity of Winter League Ball? "Don't want any dead arms down in the Dominican come December"...these clowns pitch every 5th day at best. It's pathetic to watch.
- Absolutely no help on the way from the Farm - which is gutted like a hog on a skewer.
- Church, Schneider and Maine are the only bright spots on this team. Even Johan Sebastian Bach looks mediocre half the time (insert adjusting to ny excuse here...should be good for a free pass from Willie for all of '09, or until he goes on the DL for a torn cuticle that keeps him out 2 months - maybe he and Moises can rehab together down in St. Lucie and get in some quality golf time together).

The Mets have championship-quality PITCHING.

Hitting? I dunno...

Basically, here's what it comes down to.

There's no trades to be made without giving up the only can't-miss-barring-injury prospect they have.

Hitting-wise, there's nothing in AAA that'll make any difference and there's no one in AA who's ready to make the jump.

There's nobody on the bench at the majors champing at the bit to take over a starting role.

There's no free-agents out there to sign.

Something needs to change and there's only one thing to change.

The manager.

Willie can't manage a bullpen, he refuses to make the veterans show any responsibility and his stoic-and-steady bullcrap won't work on the younger players... because, as much as he can't admit it, it ain't 1975 anymore.

Joe Torre's only a good manager on a team full of performing veterans and Joe Torre Lite certainly doesn't cut it on a team of unmotivated veterans and rudderless young guys.

It's the only change that can be made and it is the time to pull the trigger.

Get someone young and/or in his first managing role in there to fire the place up and if it makes Alou and Delgado and Castillo angry... all three of those guys should by-rights retire at the end of this year so who cares?

It's time.

This comment says to me that this team is not together and Willie has lost the clubhouse...

That undercurrent of discontent over some Mets ducking the media boiled over after the game. As reporters spoke with Billy Wagner after the loss, first about the Yankees series, then about today’s game, Wagner wondered aloud why the closer was drawing attention.

Then he went Paul Lo Duca-esque, minus the racial component.

He looked over toward the area of Carlos Delgado’s locker and blurted: “Someone tell me why the (expletive) you’re talking to the closer. I didn’t even play. They’re over there, not being interviewed. … I got it. They’re gone. (Expletive) shocker.”

Would anyone be surprised that Willie might not find his parking spot at Shea when the team comes back from Col. if the Mets get swept by the Yanks and look real bad losing or worse does not get on the plane to Atl?

Steve, Yes Wright was taking his time too, but Castillo was the one who could have scored and so the focus is on him. Washington was making bonehead plays this whole series too, but it just seems to always cost the mets when they do it. Do you remember Timo? I know Its not just Willies fault, The players hiding from the press shows the gutless nature of this bunch. Something has to be done. This cannot go on.

Steve - I caught a bit of Willie's postgame from the other room, and I think he said Beltran was going on contact if the ball was hit to the right side. It's Beltran's fault to not notice that it was in the air and caught. He shouldn't have been going on such a sharply hit ball with the infield in because he will make it anyway if it gets through the infield. Willie probably wanted him going on contact because he didn't have faith in getting a hit in that spot, so might as well try scoring on a ground out. Unfortunately, it was a line out, and Beltran got caught.

Who Needs Lohan - I think you're being somewhat sarcastic, based on fan reactions, because I'm not in the "Rangers suck" camp, and I don't think you are either. :)

Willie probably wanted him going on contact because he didn’t have faith in getting a hit in that spot, so might as well try scoring on a ground out. Unfortunately, it was a line out, and Beltran got caught.

Who Needs Lohan – I think you’re being somewhat sarcastic, based on fan reactions, because I’m not in the “Rangers suck” camp, and I don’t think you are either. :)

This season has not been about ups and downs.
The bottom line this team does not come out and play with any urgency.
The attitude top down is quote "tough loss today we did not get the breaks we will be better tomorrow."

This needs to change fast or a 500 season will even be a distant memory.

It's easy for Wagner to talk tuff since he's pitching well these days. Everyone goes through ups and downs. It will never happen, but I'd love for OP, the next time Wagner blows a save (it WILL happen) to go to the media and say, "Billy really just needs to focus more. We really needed this win but he spit the bit and let us all down."

If accurate, that's essentially what Paul Lo Duca said last year, when he noted that his teammates "speak English."

Yeah, apparantly the gist of what Wagner said is: "Why are you talking to me for? Im only the closer? Why don't you talk to the guys responsible for the loss? Oh...I see why...they arent there anymore.

JD - I have never seen you be so strong in your comments.

It is welcome. Big Pelf had a nice game from the boxscore.

I don't have an opinion on all that is said here, but Omar picked this team. As someone said earlier this season the new guys are the ones playing.

It seems many teams make that mistake. Go for the tried and true which in the end gives you a team with no energy because you don't have enough hungry players. I think that is one part of the problem here. There are no young bench/starters who are trying to prove themselves every day.

Experience is nice and necessary, but so is youth.

Yeah, Wagner had something to say. Good for him. I wish some of the others had the guts to speak up and rip themselves. Some of these guys have the toughness of tissue paper.-JD
