Mets Chat Room

Welcome back to Mets Chat Room. The boys against the Nationals. Claudio Vargas will become the seventh pitcher to start for the Mets this spring.

The Yankees’ series is a couple of days away and nobody is making a big deal if it.

Nor should they. You will hear about what an impact interleague play has made on attendance. Don’t drink that Kool-Aid.

I would rather see a Mets-Marlins game than a Mets-Yankees game. I know the Yankees would draw more, but that’s unimportant to me.

The integrity of the major league schedule, and that all teams run the same race is what matters most.

Interleague play is, always has been, always will be, a shameless gimmick.

I thought Pelfrey was pitching. I guess with the Vargas acquisition life changes huh.
looks ok so far. I see Delgado still gets the benefit of his long career.
    sigh
oh well. the rest of the team will cover for him…

  2. John Delcos

Steve: You want to bench such a great bunter?-JD

  3. craftylefty

Who was the clown that threw out the first pitch? Made a whole big show of using the resin bag, and then bounced it up there.

  4. Steve C.

So let me get this straight. They make Church their hottest bat. bat in the 2 hole. so that the hole in 6th wont matter because wright beltran and alou follow. so the strikeout at the 6 spot wont matter. unreal. just so that Delgado doesnt have the number 7 spot. sigh

  5. Steve C.

JD: i wish. he'll never bunt again. he should be in the 2 hole.

  6. Steve C.

hey JD can you make a quick poll. how will delgado strikeout? K, fly, ground, lineout?
i know this is mean of mean but.. i am in a mood. i will be 10 days with no baseball.

    John –

"The integrity of the major league schedule, and that all teams run the same race is what matters most."

This would mean that baseball could revert to two leagues playing the same game.

    No more 'Designated Hitters' –
    No more pitch counts –

No more play off wild card games –
An All Star Game based only on a players' record not 25/votes per computer fan –

Real doubleheaders in the afternoon/evening for a single ticket –
Wouldn't it be wonderful…. Yes, it would. And I remember games like that – before gimmicks and greed took over.

  8. Dan Gurney

I always find it interesting that how many people complain about what a gimmick interleague play in baseball is but never say the same thing about the NBA, NHL or NFL. Just like I don't hear people complaining (at least as much) about how the NBA and NHL should play their playoff games on weekday afternoons "so the kids can see them".

  9. Steve C.

But the rules dont vary like baseball.
and with football they play once or twice a week? not many games,.

  10. Seaver

I couldn't agree more. And IL play has been disadvantageous to the Mets, who get 6 Yankee games every year.

As to Gurney's point, at least in the NBA, every team in one conference plays the same number of games against the teams in the other conference (unlike interleague in MLB). And thus it has always been. And in the NFL, the interleague and out of division games are selected based on prior season's final standings, so at least there is some semblance of an attempt to make the strength of schedule equal.

Yes the afternoon thing is nonsense. But the schedule is a legitimate complaint. If you want regional play in baseball, then re-align the leagues and have Mets and Yanks in the same division. I really hope they abolish interleague play, restore credible schedules. I'd like the DH to go away too, but the union likes those salaries. Maybe a 26 man roster to compensate for eliminating the DH?

  11. Steve C.

Isnt there no bunting in AL ball also? bunch of babies dont know how to run./.

  12. Dan Gurney

I don't see 6 games as this huge huge disparity. They play 162 games a year. Plus the Mets have a huge advantage in market size that their division opponents don't have. Even in the days of the reserve clause some people like Ed Barrow, Branch Rickey, George Weiss, Walter O'Malley and John McGraw found a way to use it.

Sports are entertainment. I see far more friends and co workers argue Wright vs A Rod, Torre vs Bobby V, Reyes vs Jeter than any division rivalry. The few times the pitiful Islanders get crowds are for the Rangers and Devils. People like to argue with their neighbors. You have skyrocketing revenues in baseball and I think interleague play accounts for part of it. Why are so many people are interested in the Civil War. On an extreme scale, it brings out neighbor vs neighbor, families and regions divided.

Are both Vargas and Redding pitching well or are the hitters off tonight?

  13. Josh

    Damn, Zimmerman crushed that one…

  14. ChiliGTC

you can say that again Josh….

  15. Josh

    Heilman is a loser…

  16. ChiliGTC

    Heilman is this year's Mota!

  17. clm

What the heck is wrong with Heilman? I just don't know where his confidence went? Still how is this offense not scoring runs!!??!!?

  18. BH

JD, could you ask Willie why the #$@! he left Heilman in when it was already 3-1? And if he answers by referring to having "faith" in Heilman, please hit him in the head with a bat for me, thanks!

  19. Stillsane

Randolph makes watching the Mets painful. When it became two to one and Heilman looked off, what was he thinking?????

  20. clm

Yes – Why wait to bring in Smith then? I thought Soso was this years Mota?

  21. metsdiehard

Me think the Mets are in the business in losing fans. Why this team keep bringing out Hellmen to pitch when every Mets fans know that 9 out of 10 times he gonna blow the game to kingdom come.Smith was a far better choice.

  22. Dan

This game gets blamed mostly on willy..they should have brought in smith instead of heilman..it makes absolutely no sense to bring in heliman in that situation

  23. DC 9er

Oh poor little Metsies. I just got home from work and turned on the TV and I can't believe my eyes…. The great big Metsies are losing again to the horrible Nationals. I just can't believe it…... Are we cheating ?

  24. scoopcoop

0-16 when losing after 7. Soon to be 0-17.

I don't like to be so dramtic but a loss tomorrow and a 3-4 homestand would be a disaster.

  25. metsdiehard

So DC 9er, what's your favorite baseball team? The last place Nats?

  26. DC 9er

John Delcos: Do you still write your stories with a typewriter? Do you still listen to your music on a record player? Do you still drive your car without wearing seat belts? Do you want tax day to still be March 15? Do you watch TV with rabbit ears? Why do you cover the Mets? They were an expansion team …... Why recognize them….
Are you still looking for regular gasoline? The world changes…. Its very old news…. saying you'd rather watch the Marlins. Even Marlin fans would rather watch Yankees/metsies…...

  27. DC 9er

Oh little metsie diehard.. You are indeed a genius…. Does your IQ register on the Richter scale?

  28. Dan Gurney

The rally in in full blossom. Two on, one out bottom of the eighth. Come October when we are all drinking champagne, we will look back and remember what we are about to see. The Mets rally against the Mighty Gnats. You Gotta Believe! Let those dogs out!

  29. Josh

What a pathetic at bat by David…

  30. metsdiehard

D(i)C(k) 9er is a Nats fan and a closet yankee fan.

  31. DC 9er

I think Danny boy is already sipping the champaigne. It will all be in Philly come October, just like last year, Danny boy.

  32. DC 9er

oh metsie diehard. I notice that whenever you metsies have to show some depth of brain power you revert to dirty words. Is the f bomb next mr genius? there are no closet yankee fans mr diehard, they are the @ 1 team in their ciry unlike you lowly metsies who have always been # 2, are still # 2 and will forever be # 2 in NYC…..

  33. DC 9er

that's it diehard? you quit on me already? time for dinner. can't wait to read all the venom you nasty little metsie will spew at poor little Aaron tomorrow.

  34. Josh

The Marlins get 6 in the 9th, and this team can't even get a baserunner on… Pathetic chumps…

  35. DC 9er

You are a very smart and supportive metsie Josh. I couldn't have said it better myself!!!
You metsies want to be professionals, but you think that means being zombies… Well Omar has a team full of zombies and it shows…... DEAD DEAD DEAD

  36. Cliff

This team just plain stinks. A losing bunch of underachievers with one of the worst pitching staffs in MLB.

  37. Dan Gurney

A disappointing loss. But there are still 123 games left in the season. I am not sure if that is good news or bad news.
Is Vargas start a good sign for him in the rotation or a missed opportunity to cash in on a good piece of luck?

I'm not ready to add Heilmann must be released to each posts like I did for Mota last year. But I'm considering it.

  38. Azy

Heilman with 3 consecutive 2 outs hits, ugh.

  39. John Delcos

DC 9er: No, I don't write with a typewriter. But, it's different. Interleague play is not progress. Interleague play is a gimmick. I write about it because not criticizing would be accepting it. I can't accept interleague play as a positive because it is not.-JD

  40. Ray Sadecki

I have been one of Heilmans biggest supporters, but I cant take it anymore He needs to go down to AAA to get himself straigtened out. Its now obvious that he will never get it together without radical help.

  41. cver

John, without a doubt, the worst Met game of the year. The way Willie put Heilman in and left him in, was the end as far as I'm concerned. Willie HAS to go! Nice guy, but he's had his chance. I really hope that the Wilpons can insist on doing this quickly before the season is ruined and that they can find the proper replacement quickly.

  42. Stillsane

Heilman is the new mop up man for now. Willie demonstrated the term "asleep at the switch". This is not a team that can afford for a pitcher to pitch a team four runs down. If Willie does not get that, then the Mets need someone who do. I blame Willie for this loss tonight. He is making a difference to the team. Right now, it is definitely a negative one.

  43. JK

JD: I know from last year that you really hate interleague. Sure it's a gimmick, but that doesn't necessarily make it bad. And it's a successful gimmick too. Even without interleague, all teams wouldn't really be running the same race due to unequal revenues. That means some teams are already running the race with a disadvantage. The length of the major league season is so long that any inequities in the short interleague schedule could be made up by any team that wanted the postseason bad enough.

  44. JK

cver—on the postgame, Willie said that Schoeneweis wasn't available and that he wanted to stay away from Wise who would have been pitching 3 days in a row. He also mentioned the short turnaround time before tomorrow afternoon's game. That's why he really wanted to get at least an inning out of Heilman. His explanation makes sense to me.

They have Pelfrey going tomorrow too. The starters just need to go longer.

  45. DC 9er

I'm pretty much a tired, played-out gimmick myself.

  46. Spiderpig

Is it possible to option Heilman to AAA snice he has yet to pitch too many years? It's getting painful. Bring up Muniz, Collazo, Lugo, anybody else just to try it.

  47. DC 9er

Why should the big metsies play good. They play to the expectations of the very nasty and "despicable" fan base. You boo them endlessly and you want them to excel?

  48. scoopcoop

Until Heilman gets his head screwed on right he should not come into a game w/guys on base. His BAA w/o runners is under .200, w/it is over .350.

He is obviously trying to be too perfect. He like alot of the players is tight as a drum and walking on pins and needles. Willie says he knows his team? Why can't he get them to relax?

Have to win today to salavge a poor homestand.

  49. Billy

Let's face it, Willy will take the heat, but you have to have talent to win, and unfortunately the window on this team has closed. They were built to win it two years ago, it is time to pull the plug on this team….

It is frustrating to see all the young players Minya has traded and to see them doing well….Bannister, Keepinger, Jacobs, Bell, Ring, Nady …..

  50. sloppy

scoop: Its been said many times by Willie that they don't talk about last year. Like not talking about it makes it go away. Its like they are in denial. Willie refuses to let them go thru the "grieving process" (for lack of anther term), and for that he has made himself a failure as a manager of this team.

  51. clm

DOOM and GLOOM!!! THat's why I like DC. Gotta admit – he/she (I don't believe I know) makes me laugh.

Of course the Nats were cheating!!!!

  52. sloppy

I agree CLM, the Nats did cheat. Nobody was supposed to claim Flores after a year in A ball. It was also cheating bringing in the closer for 4 outs. Billy Wagner would never allow such a thing to happen to him….. Did we lodge our official protest yet.
