That's pretty ballsy, this DFA'ing of a guy making $2 million.
Glad to see Omar using his head for more than a hat rack. Tiffany….what's 2 million per season nowdays anyway? That amount should never scare off a team like the Mets from releasing a player. I don't think it's ballsy. It's the smart baseball move.
John or others, can you explain the exposure situation for Figueroa and Sosa? Do they both go on waivers? I seem to recall that Sosa has an option that allows him to become a free agent rather than go to AAA. I also believe Figueroa is on a minor league deal. What are the Mets options w/r/t each?
Sosa does have the option to become a free agent.
I believe the way this works is that the Mets would still have to pay him the prorated portion of his remaining salary for the year (around $2mil) and he could sign with a new team for the veteran minimum.
Nelson has to pass through waivers and can then be sent to AAA – an assignment that he would (presumably) accept and could then be brought back up anytime after 10 days.
Sosa is a mystery. 95 mph heater and a nice slider. He gave the club a nice lift as the 5 starter for about a month last year and was effective in the pen until Willie burned him out in September. This year he has looked good at times too but too many bad ones, and last night sealed it for him.
Figgy wasnt tricking anyone anymore and too many walks. Probably will be in AAA.
Sosa has been a journeyman type of pitcher throughout his career. It wouldn't surprise me if another team picks him up and he gives them some good appearances. But I don't want him on this team anymore.
Here's my fearless call: he signs with the Phils. Solid moves excepting the Tatis thang. Looking forward to seeing strikeout. Not looking forward to him play the outfield….
Dumb move pinch hitting Pagan yesterday.
Now hes on the DL for 15 days. He should have been put on the DL the day after he got hurt.
McEwing: I should've mentioned that, but you're right. Just stupid. It's what the Phillies did with Rollins.-JD
i think it's a slightly different situation between pagan and rollins.
first off, pagan is a bench player as opposed to one of the primary components of the team.
and, as such, with alou back, pagan was still able to be used to pinch run and possibly even as a defensive replacement. whereas rollins with his ankle really couldn't do anything.
also, pagan's injury (shoulder soreness) could very easily have gotten better with a few more days rest. but once castillo got hurt the mets' hands were forced into making a move.
first base for sale!?
yeah i know 16 million* still ..
I am sorry i cant let this go. i can deal with a crappy bat most times as long as there's a glove attached. whne you get another NO Vaughn.. it just rubs me raw.. u can razz me all you want.. Delgado hurt us last year and he will end os this year.
