Mets Chat Room: My rooting interest edition.

May
9

Welcome back to Mets Chat Room. Tonight the Reds are in town. Mike Pelfrey tries to get it together after three straight bad starts. I like Pelfrey, I really do.

Now, about the issue of my favorite team. Some of you think I hate the Mets and love the Yankees, which couldn’t be further from the truth.

Just because I don’t bleed orange-and-blue, the assumption is I bleed pinstripes. When you do this for a living, you stop being a fan. I root for good stories and good people. I root against jerks and cheaters. The last professional sports team I rooted for with any passion were the Larry Bird-Kevin McHale Celtics. That was easy to do because I didn’t cover hoops.

Actually, I would be doing you all a disservice if I loved the Mets the way you gals and guys do. When somebody claims I hate the Mets, I beam because it tells me I am looking at the team objectively and doing my job.

If I had to choose between Endy Chavez and Angel Pagan to clear a roster spot for Matt Wise, it would be Chavez. I think Pagan is a better player. Personally, I think Chavez is living off that catch.-JD

  2. Bob

well you DID cover the yankees for 8 seasons. what did you expect? and matt cerrone is a huge metsfan ur telling me he can't continue his blog? adam rubin is a big mets fan and basically has the same job as you

  3. Doug

    100% on the money JD.

I hate to see him go, but we're a long, long time away from the catch.

    Time to move on.

  4. Bob

and jd that must suck having to watch every game and not even rooting for them to win. doesnt adam rubin do the same thing and I think he roots for them to win

  5. sloppy

matt cerrone is a lackey for the mets tv network… he's owned. Delcos is a newsman and a good newsman doesn't root for a team.

  6. Tiffany

I think Delcos has a shrine to Frank Ryan in his basement.

  7. pvhornet05

So sloppy I am guessing you didn't read Matt's article about Willie and it may be the end of the line for him after this month.

  8. Bob

sloppy – I have been reading Metsblog since december of 06, and I must say while Cerrone sometimes takes stuff down/puts stuff up which looks sketchy I.E. hes doing what sny tells him. hes no lackey to them though. he does a fantastic job and no offense to JD but I view it as the #1 mets site for all the fans

  9. sloppy

pvhoenet05: What in the world would I care about an article from his site. All his articles are stuff from other articles or plugs for his masters at SNY. Was his artile original or was it attributed to someone else's article. If you want a synopsis from the news go to metsblog. If you want a kiss up routine go to metsblog. If you want honest reporting then stay here.
Plus anyone can write an article that says anything "may" happen at a certain time. You can't be wrong because you only said it may….

  10. pvhornet05

First off John and Matt are both great writers and these are the only 2 sites I go to for Mets information.

Secondly the article that Matt wrote was in regards to Dan Graziano's and how the Mets management are going to reevaluate the staff at the end of May. But Matt also gives his opinion on Dan's article and his opinion on Willie.

  11. Bob

sloppy – do you ever noticed how theres always posts that say opinion – blah nblah blah, its not all plugs and articles as u say, those r mostly from his other writers such as nichols, dj short, etc

  12. tomg

    Repost!!
    tomg May 9th, 2008 at 10:37 am

    John Delcos,
sorry man, nothing personal. I got the impression you were a yankee fan by some of the bloggers on this blog but that's not my question. I am responding to your post.

"Oh, and Teixeira to the Mets? Can't see it happening?-JD"

    My question is, Why not?

  13. scoopcoop

sorry JD but Pagan's defense is lacking, despite his catch Wed, for a 4th/5th OF in my book.

As far as Cerrone's blog. It is great to able to go to a site that gathers all the info and Cerrone does that. I'm not able to spend every waking hr looking for Mets info. Cerrone does that for me.

He clearly states he is a fan. He is a blogger not a reporter and as such can root all he wants. He does not have to be objective like a reporter is suppose to be. I see nothing wrong w/him trying to make a buck at it either.

  14. Keith

First – JD, I agree on Endy. Right on the money, as per usual.

Second – I would not call Matt Cerrone a great writer. He has a great site that performs a great service for Mets fans, but his "articles" are more like featured blog comments that are more fleshed out (oh yeah, and rational.) This is not to disparage Cerrone, it's just calling it like I see it.

Third – As for JD's rooting interest, I don't see how it matters. He might seem a bit overly critical at times, but I think it's a good thing, since he looks at the team more objectively than I would… and I like to think I am fairly objective about the Mets. But I'm a fan of the team and an optimistic person by nature so that can cloud my view of the team. JD helps me maintain a more objective perspective.

However, regarding Rubin, Cerrone, or even Leitch from Deadspin, it's different strokes for different folks. JD prefers the more old school, objective approach and it works for him.

  15. sloppy

Bob, You can view it as the # 1 mets site but since you yourself says it takes stuff down becuase of SNY I appreciate you proving my point that Cerrone is a lackey owned by SNY.

Delcos: Does SNY make you take stuff down? Didn't think so.
Why a rain delay. I see sunshine out my window…....

  16. Bob

sloppy – metsblog usually has 10-20 posts per day sometimes more.

  17. Mike

Cerrone's blog is informative if you're looking for tidbits instead of searching all over the internet, but he's a pathetic apologist…and this is coming from someone who looks at the glass 1/2 full approach when it comes to the Mets.

Oh, his appearances on tv are HORRIBLE.

  18. John Delcos

    A few things:

-To Tomg: It's I see the Mets trying to land another pitcher first and would try to fill first elsewhere. I don't see where Teixeira is worth $20 mil a season as has been reported.

-Scoop:No question Chavez is better with glove, but I don't see where Pagan is the liability people make him out to be. Oh, yeah, I have nothing against Matt's blog. I've never ripped it here.-JD

  19. scoopcoop

sloppy did you ever have a boss in life? Did they ever tell you that you can't do this or you can't do that? Maybe you were/are lucky and never had that situation in life. But most of us have to make a living and as such you can't always do whatever you want to do, say whatever you want or write whatever you want when someone is footing the bill.

  20. Mike

scoop-His blog was that way BEFORE as well.

JD-Totally agree on Chavez…though to be fair, I don't mind keeping him. I'd much rather jettison Sosa.

  21. scoopcoop

JD gotta say that there has been about 1/2 dozen balls that Pagan made bad reads on that Chavez may have had and a couple of those may have cost games. As a backup OF, I'd prefer better defense.

Plus, Pagan's RH batting is much to be desired, he does not bunt well like Chavez and has even less pop.

  22. pvhornet05

Slop what articles were taken down?

  23. John Delcos

Tiffany: Not that old. My favorite Browns QB was Brian Sipe.-JD

  24. sloppy

hornet ask big bob He declared this a fact. I stopped reading it the day SNY bought it..
From Bob "and I must say while Cerrone sometimes takes stuff down/puts stuff up which looks sketchy I.E. hes doing what sny tells him."

  25. JM

    JD,

I agree you shouldn't be a die-hard fan of the team you cover, but your logic seems a bit off. Somebody claims you hate the Mets – herego, you are doing your job? It may mean you've avoided watching them with rose colored glasses, but objectivity cuts both ways. Criticism does not per se equal objectivity. In fact, I think often you are too soft on these guys. Speaking of Metsblog, Cerrone noted that the Mets are 71-71 in their last 142 games. Quite frankly, for $140 million, that's unacceptable. I'm just curious how much tether you will allow before you write the "it's now or never" story for this team.

  26. Bob

pvhornet – a link to a vid of joe smith going at it with chicago fans. it had curses in it, supposedly a met official went crazy and made him take it off, that was from ny dailynews and the post

  27. Bob

and he puts up vids of sny everyday. even though he knows all the readers hate it/dont care for scott farrel toad voice

  28. Mike

scoop-I like Chavez and I wouldn't mind seeing him hang around. Like I said, Sosa should go.

That being said…what exactly endears him so much to you? He's good defensively…and that is virtually it.

I've said this numerous times the last few weeks:

    1) he has ZERO pop
    2) for a guy with speed, he never steals and if he does, is caught
    3) he had a career year in '06 and hardly played last year

  29. JM

Castro is back at least. I really wish Willie would use him to pinch hit like Bobby V used to do. He's gonna land on the DL again anyway, might as well make good use outta him while he's in one piece. One very large piece.

  30. sloppy

Really scoop sometimes you have to do what your boss tells you… I never would have guessed…. I had to work for the ex Mayor presidential candidate loser genius when he was making a name for himself going after mobsters and letting the rest of southern district office of NY go to crap. So I don't think i need a lecture on doing what your boss tells you. It doesn't make the other blog site any better because Cerrone has a a boss. He's a lackey for them. He sold out to them. He wasn't originally owned by them but chose to be a sell out.

  31. JM

Endy has had some clutch hits for this team. He doesn't have power, but the pressure doesn't seem to bother him. Can't say the same about A LOT of the others.

  32. Mike

JM- Again…I like Endy, but he has done NOTHING really since that bunt single last season which beat the Rockies.

Again, 2006 was his career year and he came through often…he hasn't really since.

  33. Bob

sloppy – your a tool, your gonna catch a smack next time I see you.

  34. DC

I have sopme seriously bad ad sad news news for all you metsies. Your favorite X-Met Paul LoDuca, broke his wrist or something and won't be able to play in the parking lot stadium again next week. I'm sure you are all saddened to greet him with the mesie jingle that you give to all metsies whether or current or past
    BOOOOOOOO
    BOOOOOOOO
    BOOOOOOO

I do love the fighting that goes on here about so many irrelevant things, like a blog site. You metsies should be so proud of yourseves. And to all those metsies who apparently are in love with some other metsie web site,... Why are you here if that site is so much better. ?????

Delcos I don't care what they say. DELCOS HAS THE BEST BASEBALL BLOG SITE IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. Jimmy dean

    To Sloppy:

Look, I am never one to pass judgement on people. If and when, I ever do post, it's usually something worth while. You are definitely entitled to your opinions on Matt Cerrone. But tell me, what the hell did he ever do to you. If you don't agree with his site, then don't read it. It's my first stop when I search the internet for Mets information…and why is that, because his posts then direct me to other great Mets sights like JD's blog, Adam Rubin's blog, and David Lennon's Newsday blog. Don't hate on the kid just because he created a name for himself and is making a career out of doing something he loves. Sorry, you had to work for the former mayor…just my two cents, but maybe someone is a bit jealous of Cerrone and his success.

  36. pvhornet05

You really think that SNY made him take it off even though you can clearly hear Smith cursing. WOW

  37. Mike

    Game called folks

  38. JM

    Mike,

That isn't true. I recall specifically that he had a big run-scoring single to help the Mets tie up one of those games in Philadelphia during September. They were down big and Endy's hit completed the comeback. Of course, they lost the game, b/c they simply could not beat the Phils. I agree with you generally, he's not a special player, he belongs right where he is on the bench. I'm just not sure that Pagan is any better, and I won't draw any such conclusion after seeing him for only 89 ABs.

  39. Jimmy dean

    Rained Out…day nighter tomorrow

  40. Doug

Endy is the odd man out. Look who was getting the ABs this week when Beltran and Alou sat. It was Pagan.

  41. John Delcos

    Bagged. Day-nighter tomorrow.-JD

  42. Choo Choo

    JD,
I have tix for the Sat game, I am assuming that is still the 1PM game.

  43. tomg

    John Delcos,

I don't know where the Mets are going to get pitching next year because the free agency market for pitchers next year is not good. The only one worth anything is CC Sabathia and he will get around 20 million dollars.

  44. Bob

tomg – Id suspect Johan, Maine, and Pelfrey are most likely going to be in the rotation next yr. Johan and Maine are the only locks though (obviously)I wouldn't sign back Pedro unless he can prove that he canstay healthy the rest of the year, and in no way do I want the Mets to sign back Ollie. Boras will milk some sorry team for about 70 million. What about Ben Sheets or Derek Lowe they're both FAs. Id rather sign a lowe to a smaller amount and get teixera than just sabathia

  45. Bob

and refer to him as Jd I think hes earned it, you tool

  46. tomg

    Bob,

Sheets is always hurt and lowe is getting up there in age. I think the mets should try hard to sign Teixera because he is a good offensive and defensive first basemen. Teixera bats 300 +, 30HR+, 100rbi+. Like I said. I don't know where the pitching will come from unless Niese and Parnell will be ready next year to step in, that's a big if.

  47. tomg

    bob,
"and refer to him as Jd I think hes earned it, you tool"

What are you his agent? That's his blog name. If he has a problem with me using his name than I should here it from him not you.

  48. sloppy

Hey Jimmy Dean: Thanks for the advice. Of course if you were literate you would have known that I stopped reading it when he sold out….
Why are you guys posting here when you are in love with metsblog….. ?

And for your information, having an opinion that is in conflict with someone else's is not jeolousy. Its an opinion. No better and certainly no worse than yours. But in my opinion being on one Mets blog and raving about another's as being so great is disrespectful to the site you are posting on. Do you go on metsblog and tell everyone how great LoHud is? I doubt it.
And why are you sorry for whom I worked for. I could have quit and found another job. FYI…despite his "leadership" it was still a great place to be.

  49. Bob

tomg – even though Lowe is getting up there on age he'd be a nice stabilizing force behind Johan and Maine. He gives a solid 200 innings 12-14 wins and a 3.20-3.70 era every yr

  50. tomg

    Bob,

IMO it's iffy but I will say he would be the only one out of all those free agent pitchers I would consider signing. The rest are all to old or not good. Of course Sabathia is the best out of the whole bunch but I don't see the mets going after him.

  51. dave

As I see it both Pagan and Endy are bench players. It depends on what you value more.

Endy plays great D. Unfortunately he tends to get hurt. Pagan is unknown. He has some skills and seems to be able to hit some. But his D is shaky. Not sure I would sub him for his D.

As for blog sites. I have caught the sites everyone mentions. I come here. I also go to the prospect hub.

As others' say the metsblog seems to be a collection of links. JD makes his own content. He also centers his blog on his readers. He will throw something out there for us to talk about.

Different sites different strokes. I prefer this one.

One more thing. JD is a writer first. The site is an extension of his job. His job is covering the Mets.

  52. NYMetsGrrl94

let's hope schneider catches for Pelfrey so he has a chance to win. with brian behind the plate mike is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA and without him he is 0-2 with a 8.34 ERA. big difference!

  53. Doug

I hope they go with Santana in the day game, he's always a better pitcher in day games while Pelf has been better in night games

A sweep would be a huge push for this team.

  54. Mike

Santana is pitching the day game. They don't to mess with his routine, seeing as he was scheduled to go tomorrow anyway.

  55. John Delcos

To NYMetsGrrl94: You make a great point regarding Pelfrey being caught by Schneider. Randolph said he doesn't believe in personal catchers, but Pelfrey has clearly been more comfortable with Schneider. Traditionally, managers go with their No. 1 catcher with their No. 1 pitcher in the first game of a doubleheader. However, in this case, I'd like to see Pelfrey-Schneider as presumably Johan Santana is able to make the adjustment.-JD

  56. Bob

jd – "Traditionally, managers go with their No. 1 catcher with their No. 1 pitcher in the first game of a doubleheader."

oh really? thanks for clearing that up for me.

  57. John Delcos

Bob: No sweat. I figured you would need the help more than most.-JD

  58. metsfan

Hey John, I respectively disagree on the Pagan point you made earlier. While he's a good athlete, and therefore will be able to make some plays, he's just not instinctual, he gets bad jumps, it just seems precarious out there for him sometimes. He also has a really bad arm, I mean, its just horrible. If Moises Alou has Pagan's body, now that would be a good defender. Alou is instinctual, he really knows what he's doing out there, he just isn't the athlete you need to be to be a really good defender. The thing is, Endy is that. It really has nothing to do with the "catch" either. He was a great defender before that, and still is. He's gold glove caliber.

  59. John Delcos

Metsfan: You make good points all the way around. Pagan is not the instinctive player defensively Chavez is. Pagan is the better athlete, which I think gives him greater upside potential. I like the way Pagan hustles and his offensive potential, which is why I would pick him if forced to make a choice. Defensively, however, you are right – Chavez is better. Here's the question the Mets would have to answer: Which has the higher value: Pagan's offensive potential vs. Chavez's given on defense?-JD

  60. pvhornet05

JD, I would go with Endy's defense unless Alou gets injured then I would go with Pagan. Its like what metsfan said, in the late innings I want someone who I can count on to replace Alou defensively and for me that is Endy.

  61. John Delcos

Fair enough. I think I will make this a poll question in the morning.-JD

  62. john

any thoughts on what the mets will do with the rotation over the next few weeks?

Somebody will have to take the start on Wednesday, I can't see Pelfrey or Santana going on 3 days rest. Which means either it will be Sosa or maybe they send down Figgy after he makes his start and bring up Armas? Also, they have a double header with the braves in 10 days and then they go about 2 weeks without a day off, which means they will need another starter on or around the 24th… who then?

  63. sloppy is a see you next tuesday

    to sloppy….

    c u next tuesday

  64. Doug

With Beltran in center and Church in right, I think we can lose a little defense in left

The difference between Endy and Pagan isn't as big as people make it.

And Pagan's offensive potential makes up for the differences with Endy.

  65. sloppy

Pagan/Chavez: If an outfielder goes I'd send Pagan down because he has an option and you can have him back when Alou goes down for another month or 3. Chavez might get picked up by somebody when you DFA him….. But I agree all around, Pagan is a better player than Chavez is now. I think he lost a step or two when he got hurt last year.

  66. mlj

Today looks like a great day to crack open a cold beer or two and watch the Mets play a couple!

    http://www.myteamrivals.typepad.com/mr_mets_daily

  67. Stick

IMO, Pagan and Chavez are to a certain extent redundant, in that they are very similar players, and can only play OF.

I think the bench would be better if they had one of the 2 (I pick Pagan), and replace the other with a RH 1B/OF type with some pop in the bat.

I actually like Nick Evans at AA, although he might not be quite ready to step into the role, but soemone like that.

Hey, if he can play a decent 3B in a pinch, even better!

  68. John Delcos

To MLJ: Pelfrey's pitching? Just two?-JD
