Steve C said to me "Mets fans dont throw crap at their players "

Now Steve C that was funny since you are the number one metsie bad fan who throws crap at his own players all the time. I bet you've thrown crap atr Carlos Delgado 10,000 ties just this year alone. You are indeed a funny albeit "despicable" little metsie......

Last year Delgado said the arm surgeries had no negative impact on him. In fact he stated his arm felt better than it did the year before when he put up big numbers.

Because his defense has slipped so much, I do think it's simply age decline. And that's something Willie or any other manager can't fix.

This is the way I am looking at things (as of right now.)

Delgado had two surgeries following the '06 season. Personally, I think this had a big affect on him last year and I don't think he was in good shape either.

This past offseason he had to recover from a broken wrist. He seems to be in better shape this season.

I am willing to cut him a bit of slack as he could just be having a bad month. But hey, I could be wrong and he could be finished. I still think it's a bit too early to cut bait.

I was expecting Delgado to produce slightly less than last year in terms of HRs and RBIs, but it looks like even those modest goals won't be met. Yes, it's still early, but he looks worse than last year, with the glove too. The numbers back that up, and his defense has slipped a lot.

The thing is, if he continues at this pace both with the glove and bat all year, I can't see the Mets making the playoffs. So how long do you wait before you consider a serous platoon situation, perhaps brining up one of the kids from Binghamton, or something even more drastic? If some of the other teams in the NL East continue to play very well, then the Mets will have no choice but to make a big change sooner rather than later.

Marlon is not the answer. He would get exposed if he played everyday. He's been a bench player for a few years now. There's a reason for this.

I still say it's early. Let's wait until the weather heats up before we pronounce him finished. And I still maintain if he can at least duplicate last year's numbers hitting 6th he would be solid and certainly not a liability.

Delgado vs the Bench

Yes Delgado has more power. But too many times this season and last his appearance is not productive. He no longer can crank it and pitchers throw heat inside ( 86 mph heat ) and win. Those used to leave the yard.

His secret is out. He offers no protection and does not keep rallies alive and does not drive them in or over. He may change. It is still early .. yada yada. But I would like to see him platooned at this point.

Marlon provided hits the other day that scored runs.

We don't have the 1B we should. We need to make do with what we have. Delgado is a liability now.

Keith: on boo-ing. agreed and thank you.
on power: agreed again we need power but we also need consistency. On fortunately many of our hitters have been inconsistent. But for the most part they have been reliable. Delgado since last year has not been either. The pitchers dont even pitch around him anymore. That should speak volumes.

But hey there's a long season ahead. Keep the faith.

Lets Go Mets Go!

Our 1B isn't here for defense, otherwise we would have kept Dougie M. We need some power from 1B, and while not providing the power he once did, Delgado still has a ton more power than those 3.

BTW, just wanted to give you kudos for your statement in another thread about not booing your team. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who thinks this way.

Keith: of course you can disagree. thats what discussion is about ;-)

as for:

Shawn Green played an awesome first base last season. everytime willie put him play.
Gotay was given a shot and wasnt too shabby.
Marlon has played well.

and those 3 i mentioned. all hit the ball as well.
since we dont have 2 of them for odd reasons. I think one of our extra infielders could do the job.

But as you say lets see what Delgado does this new month.

My hopes arent that high but if he proves me wrong. Thts fine. I rather be wrong. Trust me.

Steve, I will just have to respectfully dissent. Sure, you don't want an absolute butcher at 1B, but you can give up the D if you're going to get offensive production. I think Delgado will replicate last season at least. That will be fine and definitely worthy of hitting 6th as long as Alou is around.

"I honestly feel there are better suited players that can play 1st."

I've seen you and others state this, but my question is who? Start naming names.

DC you talk out the wrong hole dude. Mets fans dont throw crap at their players like GNATS and Yankee fans.

and since when arent people allowed to have a personal opinion on players? Have I ever said once that i hated my team? Never.

so go bite the dog's bone ..

Now I know why 75% of NYC area loves the Yankees and hates the Metsies. Its not all the championship flags or all the playoff appearances. It because metsie fans are so disgusting to their very own players and managers and coaches. Nobody who is a real baseball fan can not be appalled by the despicable behavior of the metsie fans in NYC.... No wonder the few good metsie fans have to wear earplugs to the games. They can't stand their fellow metsie fans.... If it weren't for Tiffany, dave, Mr scoopy, clm and keith and metfan sometimes and Mr original, there might not be one decent metsie fan in the whole world......

Keith: ok garbage is a bit harsh. I'll grant you that. But first base is very important. and a 1st baseman that watches balls roll by is no fielder. yes Delgado was excellent player but injuries have riddled him. He hasnt been honest with the team or players as to his health. This is my belief.

I honestly feel there are better suited players that can play 1st. and as dave has said. if delgado does play he needs to bat 7th .. 8th is a very important spot. 8 needs to get on base to clear the pitcher..

Also granted many of our bats have been semi quiet but they at least hit clutch ball most times. between last year and this year delgado has been far from clutch.
Also i will restate if either his bat or his glove were alive I could ignore the lacking of the other. look at wright and beltran their bats are suffering. but their gloves! and they are slumping then they are hitting.. so you have to watch them.

So we will just have to see what the Mets do about 1st base. notice when delgado hasnt played. we won...

Let me barge in here.

Delgado in 06 was great.

Now I think he might be useful but would not cry if he is gone. He does not play a good 1b and his bat is not good enough for any special treatment.

He strikes out way to much and does not seem to be able to make contact anymore. He is a bottom of the lineup guy not a 4 or 5.

On this team at this point of the season, if Church is not batting behind jose he should be behind Beltran or Alou.

Delgado in 06 was great.

Now I think he might be useful but would not cry if he is gone. He does not play a good 1b and his bat is not good enough for any special treatment.

Delgado was never anything special? Allow me to refresh your memory:

'06 38 HR, 114 RBI, .265/.361/.548
'07 28 HR, 87 RBI, .258/.333/.448
162 Game Average for his career: 37 HR, 120, .279/.385/.546

Delgado may not be Lou Gehrig, but he's had a damn fine career. And while he had an atypical year last year, please tell me who you're putting at 1B to produce those numbers? Marlon Anderson? Fernando Tatis? Val Pasucci? I don't think so.

Delgado may no longer be "Delgado" but he is still going to produce better than most. Lastly, 1B is last on the defensive spectrum. Yeah his glove stinks at this age, whatever, stop complaining about it. There are far worse than him at the position.

Looking back over my post, I seem to have been a bit short, and I apologize because you're a good poster here. But seriously, calling Delgado garbage is a bit too much.

Keith: Delgado helps us win.. how?
By watching a playable ball roll by him time after time?
By swinging in the breeze every single time? which i could forgive if he was a real 1st baseman with a real glove..

Listen Delgado was never anything special what spell he had on the rest of you is beyond me and from what i see. many of you have opened your eyes and see what i have seen for the last 2 years .. garbage.
