How to fix Perez.

What we saw the last two times from Oliver Perez is what we’ll continue to see. There will be a few good games mixed in to keep the tease aspect going, but overall he’s still heads-and-tails.
I’ve posted a new poll asking what the Mets should do with Perez, the assumption, of course, being he’s fixable.
No, sending him to a French penal colony isn’t an option.

So far this year this team is just so flat it almost feels like they dont care. Best example of the season was the extra innings win against Pit last week. Wright got the big hit and rounded first with half a smile on his face. The team looked like they were just relieved that they could go home now (much like Keith Hernandez during extra innings). Lack of excitement was very evident the next day when they lost 13-1. Could be a long season…...
How about brain washing him and make him think he is Steve Carlton?
I give up on this team. I will still watch every pitch and pull for them as hard as ever, but I give up trying to disect their flaws, b/c most of them I just don't think are curable. If you could transplant Johan Santana's brain into Oliver Perez's skull, you might have something. Barring that, this IS Oliver Perez, as JD has recognized. He is a microcosm for the team: talented, but inconsistent, residing on another planet, and susceptible to pressure. I need a long winning streak to get me thinking positively, but I don't think it's coming.
JM: you give up? There's no giving up. unless you arent a Met fan.
Listen Perez wants to pitch his way which doesnt work. He needs to listen to people and pitch properly and that will also work with his strengths. when he does that he pitches well. its only when he decides to do it all his way he forgets what to do…
darling noticed it and i am sure Peterson notices it. soon Perez will grow up and notice it too.
JM: Give up? Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?''-JD
Germans? I thought the Japanese did that…
;-)
Intense psychiatric counseling?
Ollie's always been erratic and impending FA seems to have made it worse. He's staring at a multi-million dollar contract—which will probably set him up for life—and it's getting to him.
Maybe sending him down to N.O. would help with the change of scenery and less pressure. Is he not getting along with Peterson or is Peterson not getting through to him? If things are still productive between them, move him to the #5 spot. Again, less pressure. I don't know if Ollie has the make-up to be a reliever (he'd never know when he'd get the call and I think he needs a steady routine) and with his contract up at the end of the year who would trade for him?
The pitching staff could use an elder statesman to help the young guys through the rough spots. Johan is maybe too new to the team for this and Wags is the quirky closer. Could really use Pedro here. Actually, Figgy might be able to help Ollie, Maine, and Pelf. Talk about a guy who's been through a lot but kept focussed, kept working hard, etc.
JD,
"Give up? Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?''"
Time to go back to history 101 in jr. High
Niedermayer? Dead!

Niedermayer? Dead!"
Who Scott Niedermayer of the ducks?
Well, I'm going to look at this season on the bright side. Last year the Mets led the national league east for almost the entire season until the last game was played. This year let the Phillies lead the national league east for almost the entire season and let the mets come from behind and sweep past them and win the division like the Mets did against the cubs in 1969. All we need is a black cat to walk past the Phillies dugout in august when the Phils are in town and the Mets will be in business.
Nah dont wish evil. the wheel turns on that crap ya know.
Just wish the first part.. lets have a slow start and turn it on mid season. thats when its most fun..
Who knows maybe Delgado will surprise me and wake the eff up. ;-)
I really want to be wrong about him.. but i dont think so..
;-)
Steve C.,
don't like the black cat? Oh well, I tried. I think that is the only way the Mets will win but ok, no cat, just do it.
yeah no cat wishing bad karma. let thm win it fair and sqaure. ;-)
Maybe Ollie has to copy Brad Penny's pitching form, which is keep his head looking at 1st and then at the last minute look back at the catcher.
I am no pitching coach but it just seems that Ollie's head is too far in front and he is dragging his arm around.
I listen to darling. he's usually Spot on. and before anyone says anything. He's the first person to rag is own pitching. He always stipulates that he wasnt a good pitcher.. But mechanics are key.. and Perez seems to refuse to polish his mechanics so thats its automatic. you cant think the mechanics.
don't any of you (excluding tiffany) know an Animal House quote when you see one?
yes. i do. but:
It just doesnt matter..
(and yes i knew exactly what you meant..
but..
it just doesnt matter
Yeah Steve C. I'm not suggesting I've stopped being a Mets fan, only that this team has been psycho-analyzed beyond the point that it is useful. Either they are the .500 team they've shown themselves to be over the last 5 months of regular season baseball, or they're not. If they are better than that, then it's time they show it. And don't question my fanhood.
Good AH reference JD. Very good.
Alex i do.
"Thank you sir, may I have another," seems to describe Ollie pitching last night.
JM: just a question not a statement ;-)
what did u think that i was some sort of kansas city MOe-Ron.
Think Ollie could be the demise of the Jacket…..
There has to be a west coast team that's deperate enough for pitching that will take a flyer on him because they see potential and hope being where he wants to be will make him happy reulting in prodictivity along with hoping they have a leg up on signing him thanks to their location. In return we could use some offense, I think we need more offense. Texas, SF, Colorado come to mind maybe the Dodgers
Steve C.,
Sorry for being testy. Some wins would help my mood.
JM no problem.
but i do have a question for ya..
do you mind if we dance wit your ladies???
"Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!"
This was fun. time to logoff and prepare for a long game
Lets Go Mets Go.
time for me to head to the stadium to watch my fellow brandeis alum get the mets back into the win column.
i hope to find many more Animal House related quotes in the thread upon my return.
and remember "fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life."
although it is a decent way to watch a ballgame.
JD – Calling John Bellusi. Nice one.
It's not over until WE SAY IT IS!!
