Mets Chat Room: Trying to get back on track with Figgy.

May
6

We all know Nelson Figueroa is one of the better Mets’ stories of the year. A feel good story. Who doesn’t like rooting for the underdog?

However, the simple fact Figueroa is in the rotation means the Mets’ rotation is not where they hoped it would be. Figueroa will go against Hiroki Kuroda tonight in LA.

  1. TJ

The Mets vs a pitcher they haven’t faced before? Sounds like a perfect candidate for the Mets ERA Lowering Service ;)

  2. RMKMets

TJ: I hope you’re wrong, but we know this trend all too well…

  3. TJ

Though I’m sure most teams have trouble facing a pitcher they haven’t seen before, it just seems like the Mets are somehow worse in these situations. For example, when a new face shuts the Mets down after getting torched by other teams. I’ve wondered the past few seasons if there is some sort of problem with the Mets advance scouting or their ability to adapt to a pitcher the 2nd or 3rd times through the lineup.

  4. scoopcoop

as someone stated about OP overthinking on the mound, the Mets position players overthink in the batters box, especially against a guy they have not seen and thus stand there and watch strike after strike wiz by.

I hope they win but I would not be surprised by a 2 run effort.

  5. JM

    JD,

You call Figgy a feel-good story, I call him our 3rd starter. And that doesn’t make me feel very good.

  6. HellofromDC

    Let’s go Mets!

  7. JM

Is there any chance the Mets just bomb Kuroda tonight? He doesn’t throw hard, he has no experience in the majors, and he’s probably gonna finish with a 4+ ERA. Yeah, he’s gonna dominate.

  8. John Delcos

    To JM: There’s always a chance.-JD

  9. JM

Well, in case it isn’t already clear, whatever is wrong with the Mets, Ryan Church just doesn’t care.

  10. Toby

And just like that we’ve got a ballgame! Let’s gooo Mets!

  11. Josh

    Why did Beltran get scratched??

  12. tomg

Thank you jim bowden for Ryan Church!!!

  13. tomg

Sounds like Beltran’s knees were hurting a little bit so Willie gave him the night off.

  14. John Delcos

Beltran scratched. We’re getting an official word.-JD

  15. Mister Dior

Beltran is 99.9999999999999% and not 100% so he can’t play until he’s 100%

  16. Metsie

    Beltran is 78% healthy

  17. JM

    Mister Dior,

That’s pretty funny. If anyone is interested, Gavin Floyd has a no hitter through 8. Glad he ain’t on the Phils anymore.

  18. John Delcos

    Hi Toby …

  19. John Delcos

We’re still waiting for word on Beltran. I could play a round of golf in the time it takes the Mets to give us an answer.-JD

  20. Ray Sadecki

A night off for Beltran is a good idea. He needs a rest like anybody else. Tomorrow is a day game, and he will be playing while some other regulars rest.

  21. Metsie

ESPN is showing the 9th in the no hit game

  22. Doug

    Gavin Floyd has a no-no through 8.1

On ESPN if anyone wants to flip over

  23. Metsie

    JD—
You should ask Rick Peterson, he’ll give you an answer

  24. Doug

And his no hitter goes bye bye.

    Joe Mauer breaks it up

  25. Bob

    nice job jinxing him metsie

  26. Metsie

Really? A guy in Manhattan commenting on a blog can jinx a pitcher?

  27. JM

    Figgy is wily out there.

  28. Bob

    yes….

  29. Bob

schnieders D rele hasnt been all that impressive

  30. Doug

I think the jinx is ESPN going to live coverage.

I’ve probably seen a dozen no hitters broken up the inning ESPN picks up the local coverage

  31. John Delcos

Beltran out with flu like symptoms.-JD

  32. Gil in Savannah, GA

Hey ya Mesie, JM, Bob, Doug and JD.
Hope you guys are having a good night.
Keeping one eye on the game and the other on the primaries. Better start to tonight than last.
Although Vin Scully just tells us that Beltran is out tonight with “flu-like symptoms.”

  33. Mister Dior

The Mets just realized that Ricky Ledee has been our center fielder the whole time this year in a Beltran jersey and not Beltran himself. They have scratched Ledee-Tran from the lineup.

  34. JM

    Beltran has the flu.

  35. JM

I feel like Kuroda is ripe for the taking. They just need a big knock.

  36. Mister Dior

aww someone get Beltran some Airborne…or some ThermaFlu…

  37. Gil in Savannah, GA

So, dare I ask: Are Castillo and Schneider as worthless now as some of you said they were last night? :)

  38. Mister Dior

    I mean TheraFlu…that stuff works wonders…

  39. Bob

any1 against the idea of bringing back Figgy to be the #5 next yr?

  40. Gil in Savannah, GA

    Way to go, Jose!

  41. tomg

    Let’s go Mr. Church!!!!!

  42. JM

    Ok, let’s end this now.

  43. Gil in Savannah, GA

Bob: Ease up on anointing Figgy to No. 5 starter next year, dude. He’s only made a handful of starts. Remember last year when Jorge Sosa started the year 6-2? It’s a long season and baseball has a strange way of evening things out.

  44. Mister Dior

Beltran went out last night drinking for Cinco de Mayo…so his “flu-like symptoms” are really a hangover…

  45. tomg

That was brutal. Why did Mr. church swing at ball 3. That was a inning killer.

  46. tomg

D-wright needs to pick up Mr. Church.

  47. Gil in Savannah, GA

    Let’s go, D-Wright!

  48. Bob

gil – you calm down, I just asked a Q. No need to rip my head off jeez

  49. Gil in Savannah, GA

Nasty splitter there to get D-Wright. We really needed those two ducks left on the pond. :(

  50. John Delcos

That inning had such great potential. Ahhh, such a tease these Mets are.-JD

  51. Josh

Wow… bases loaded, nobody out, and we don’t add on… Why are we so awful with the bases loaded???

  52. tomg

That was not good plate discipline by Mr. Church or D-wright. This seems to be a theme with the Met hitters this year. The Mets should have had at least 5 runs on the board. This will most likely come back to haunt them unless they continue to score runs.

  53. Gil in Savannah, GA

Dude, did I really rip your head off? Sorry if it sounded that way—no harm meant.

  54. John Delcos

Josh: How much time do you have?-JD

  55. JM

The way the Mets hit rookie starters, 3 runs is more than I ever imagined. But yeah, they needed to add on.

  56. Doug

If the Mets can go 4-2 on this road trip, its a great job. If they can hold out in this one and then beat Penny (which they usually do, Penny is 5-11 with a 5.66 ERA against the Mets in 19 starts) you really can’t be disappointed.

Beat the best team in baseball and a team coming off an eight game winning streak.

Maybe the fans at Shea will be a little more easy going.

  57. John Delcos

Especially when you’re giving up two-out RBI hits to the other side.-JD

  58. Bob

ahhhhhhhh typical mets pierre has waht 2 rbis already htis series? didnt he get like 2 hits in like 30 games or something. typicallllllllllllllllllllllllllll like ya and Gil if I saw you in person Id challenge you to a fight. You are a very disrespectful person.

  59. Bob

wow church couldn’t even get a sac fly?

  60. Gil in Savannah, GA

Doug: From some of the comments I’ve read here, I doubt the fans will be more easy going, though I wish we all would. One thing I learned as a fan from the last couple of years is that no matter how much we think we can will our team to victory, we can’t. And no amount of booing our own can help. Sure hasn’t helped the Knicks all these years.

  61. John Delcos

    Bob: Try decaf.-JD

  62. Bob

JD – I dont get it

  63. JM

Juan Pierre graduated first in his class at the Jay Payton School of Baserunning.

  64. John Delcos

Gil: The Mets could have swept this trip, but they would boo Pelfrey once he started walking guys.-JD

  65. edfever

Nelson looks like a longman – throws too many pitches to go deep. Armas should take his spot and move him to the pen.

Bases loaded and you walk away with two. its better then nothing but not much….

  66. edfever

Nelson looks like a longman – throws too many pitches to go deep. Armas should take his spot and move him to the pen.

Bases loaded and you walk away with two. its better then nothing but not much….

  67. Doug

Is it me or do these west coast games DRAG

Jeez..Top of the third and we are already into hour #2.

  68. edfever

I wish we had alou when he was 30 – never really watched him much on other teams – what a gamer too bad he breaks so much

  69. Gil in Savannah, GA

Bob: Think about it. You just told me to calm down, yet you’re thinking it might be worth your while to drive 16 hours down here to fight me?
All because I challenged your take that Nelson Figueroa would be a good No. 5 starter next year? I even apologized to you in my earlier post.
Do you always react this strongly when others dare to challenge your opinions?

  70. Bob

Gil – I never said I’d purposely attack you and find you but lets say I see you walking by me down the street I’d love to get in a scuffle with you, your apology was NOT sufficient and I am perturbed in how loud and indecent people can be.

  71. Doug

They HAVE TO push this run across.

If they mess this up, they could lose the game.

  72. Doug

Well, stealing home wasn’t something I was figuring, but hey I’ll take it.

  73. Josh

    SWEET MOISES!!

  74. BC

    Priceless. Hi JD. :)

  75. John Delcos

I just love that play. That’s the kind of ball they should play all the time.-JD

  76. Bob

MMM imagine Alou at ike age 31. Damn, it stinks in how the Mets fans will never be able to fulyl appreciate just how good Alou once/still is.

  77. edfever

Nelson doesn’t have over powering stuff or exceptionally deceptive off-speed pitches- his best attribute is his age=Knowledge but it means he throws a lot of pitches and they figure him out by the third time around. That makes him a longman more then a fifth starter IMO

  78. edfever

“My presence alone will make this club better” Moises Alou

  79. Gil in Savannah, GA

Bob, please explain to me how my words were either loud or indecent.
And sorry to disappoint you, but violence isn’t my way of resolving disputes.
If we saw each other, I’d offer to buy you a beer while watching a Mets game and we could sit down and calmly discuss our differences. Hopefully, at the end of that discussion, we’d shake hands like two adults, put our differences aside and go back to doing what we’re on this chat board to do: cheer on our favorite baseball team.

  80. Ray Sadecki

Is Alou the oldest man ever to steal home?

  81. Bob

edfever – wow thanks for being mean… all I said was maybe Figgy can be the 5th starter next yr no need to be a total meanie :)

  82. Doug

This is the game the Mets need to play.

    Stealing bases, Taking chances.

OBP is the biggest stat for this team.

Maybe Jose can break this one open.

  83. Ray Sadecki

I just dont like Japanese Pitchers. Every one the Mets have had has been a bum.

  84. JM

    edfever,

Armas is no better than Figeuroa.

  85. John Delcos

Ray: We’re looking into that now. It could be Paul Molitor. BTW: The last Met to steal home was Beltran in 2005.

  86. edfever

    JD

The guy doing the book on Glavine and Moose is quoting Glavine as saying the only player who called for a closed door players only meeting in the midst of the collapse was Marlon Anderson, If thats true thats a poor showing by the leadership of this team, A bench player who came over on waivers…...

  87. John Delcos

Bob: If you were to say Blue Meanie, like off ``Yellow Submarine,’’ that would be fine. But meanie? You need more spice than that.-JD

  88. Bob

Gil – when you referred to me as “dude” I thought right there you made it become informal and then I totally lost my respect for you. Your first response was very crude because basically you tore me down and didnt even give me a shot, while I agree violence isn’t always the answer I think this calls for it. I’d really love to sock it to ya just to show you whos boss. Yes I love to cheer on our fav team the Mets, but no body disrespects me especially with your crude and indecent comments. – bob

  89. edfever

Bob i wasn’t being mean you miss read my tone(can that be done- LOL) i was just making an arguement for him as the longman – Armas might not be better but I think thats where Figgy will excel and then we find out what we have in Armas and can see if they need to bring in someone at the deadline

  90. Gil in Savannah, GA

ed: Which book is that? Please tell us. Also, anyone bought that new book “100 Things All Mets Fans Do Before They Die?” Hard to get title down here in occupied Braves territory.

  91. John Delcos

Edfever: I agree. It kind of says it all, doesn’t it? It should have been Wright or Beltran. Those are the only two that would have made sense. Delgado wasn’t playing well enough. Who else? Shawn Green? Damion Easley? Paul Lo Duca (he pissed off half the clubhouse anyway).-JD

  92. edfever

    JD

Cohen was saying the club might bring up wise and go with 13 pitchers sending down pagan – any word on that it seems a bit much 12/13 split

  93. Doug

Alou stole home for the Giants in 2006

“When Alou barreled from third to score on a double steal with Ray Durham in the fourth inning of Wednesday’s contest against the Arizona Diamondbacks, he became the oldest player to accomplish that feat since Minnesota’s Paul Molitor stole home in 1998 at the age of 41.”

  94. Bob

ed – sorry, I guess you weren’t THAT mean like Gil…. While I agree he can be an effective long man we don’t have any1 to fill in for him right now especially with perez and pelf struggling. I view a sp as mroe impt than a long man.

  95. edfever

Is Wags a leader with his comments or is he seen as a pain

  96. JM

I’m not moving one of the few guys (Figgy) on this team who actually posts when he gets in trouble. He’s earned this.

  97. edfever

I hope they bring in Garcia- should be ready in June

  98. John Delcos

Bob: You seem to have a problem working and playing nicely with others tonight. Let’s all get along now.-JD

  99. edfever

Castillo is so smooth at second

  100. Bob

jd – any chance Castro comes back in the reds series?

  101. Gil in Savannah, GA

Bob: “Dude” is a term of friendship—at least in SoCal, where I’ve lived for many years, such as “man,” “friend,” “guy,” “brother,” “pal,” “buddy,” etc. is used in other parts of the country.
If you’re joking, though, with your responses, they’re kinda funny—reminiscent of the Jerky Boys character, Sol.

  102. John Delcos

    Bob: I don’t think so. I think they’ll give him a little more time.-JD

  103. JM

    edfever,

Now that is not a bad idea. If they can sign him to a minor league deal, or even a 1-year contract, that would be a low risk, potentially high reward move.

  104. Ray Sadecki

No comment on Wrights play? I guess we are spoiled.

  105. John Delcos

Edfever: Excellent question. My gut says more of a pain.-JD

  106. edfever

I agree SP is much more important but a guy who can only go 4 innings because he’s in trouble ever inning then he’s not a starter – third inning bases loaded for the second time- you can only play with fire so many times- he reminds me of a Darrin Oliver

  107. John Delcos

Here’s The Jacket. Notice his right hand on Figueroa’s shoulder. Wow!!! That’s coaching.-JD

  108. Bob

jd – sorry for not getting along with the people. Its not my fault girl I mean gil was mean and I misinterpreted Edefevers comment to me.

wow did they seriously just play we will rock you?

  109. John Delcos

Thanks Gil. I have a feeling you and Bob are going to be buds for a long time.-JD

  110. Gil in Savannah, GA

Figgy’s making the team may have been the feel good story of spring training, but let’s face the hard truth: at best, he’s a marginal pitcher, not suited to be a starter and best used sparingly as a long reliver.
    This performance tonight exemplifies that.

  111. JM

So much for posting when Figgy gets in trouble. Gonna need more runs. Sigh.

  112. John Delcos

Thanks Bob. Life is good right now. Well, except for that hit.-JD

  113. edfever

SP just cant do this staked to a three run lead and he has runs on everywhere for three innings – demoralizing – said the same about Ollie

  114. Gil in Savannah, GA

JD: Must be my Quaker school upbringing! :)

  115. John Delcos

You’re right on that one. He’s a good story because he was a long shot. But the definition of long shot is the Mets need better. All those missed opportunities? You knew they’d bite them in the butt eventually.-JD

  116. tomg

This team really truly sucks. They have the bases loaded two straight innings and don’t get a run. Than with two outs the met pitcher walks the house and gives up a two out hit. This is the same crap so far this year and the same crap they did last year in September when they collapsed.

  117. Bob

gil – sorry I didn’t respond to your post quicker, I was laughing my butt off when you tried to refer to me as a “friend” I may take you up on that offer of actually driving down to GA just to have a good ol fashioned fight. I won’t but if you ever walk by me Ill shove you into a wall and beat you up.

  118. John Delcos

Stat Time: That was Alou’s fourth career steal of home. The last time in 2006. Still waiting to see if he’s the oldest.-JD

  119. Bob

wow fees like we should be winning 6-3 not 4-3, feels like the pitts game where it shoulda never gone to extras

  120. hellofromDC/PelhamPkwy

tomg you are truly are very smart little metsie. I agree with your thinking completely…..

  121. Doug

Well Moises is only 50 stolen bases of home behind Ty Cobb now.

  122. tomg

I don’t understand how anybody can tell me that this isn’t the same garbage they did last year in September. It’s getting to the point that I can’t watch this team play. It’s so frustrating t5hat I want to throw the damn TV out the window.

  123. Bob

    has reyes ever stolen home?

  124. John Delcos

Bob: I guess I spoke too soon. Must be the optimist in me.-JD

  125. Doug

I can only fathom what kind of damage Moises could have done in his career if he could only stay healthy.

  126. edfever

If you could replace one player to alter the line-up so that they would produce more consistently – forget contracts – take into consideration injuries, defense and clubhouse effect who would that player be

  127. Gil in Savannah, GA

I wonder if Hong-Chih Kuo will bat tonight. It’d be interesting to see how long Mets pitchers’ memories are.

  128. JM

I was reading an interview with Glavine a couple weeks ago in the Atlanta Journal Constitution. He was talking about his time with the Mets and he said that Moises was a great teammate b/c he would run through a wall to win a game. True, his body acts like its run through a few walls, but you gotta love the way Alou gets after it at 40 something.

  129. edfever

    that was pathetic

  130. hellofromDC/PelhamPkwy

Delcos: Why is Hu not on first????? Costello will be very upset by this horrid event?

  131. Gil in Savannah, GA

Two on, one out and we go down swinging on six straight pitches? Kuo is pretty good, but he’s not Doc Gooden circa 1985 is he?

  132. Bob

any1 else feel the dodgers are our 5th rival after the braves., phillies, yankees, and cardinals? i hate kent, penny, kuo, jones, furcal, aaaaaaaaand TORREE

  133. John Delcos

    Thanks DC …

  134. edfever

Braves, Phillies, Cards, Dodgers, Astros in my book

  135. Doug

    Vin Scully is just awesome.

No one better to listen to when it comes to baseball

  136. Keith

Does anyone think MLB teams need to seriously re-think how they stock their bullpens? Instead of having a bunch of specialists, why not fill it with guys like Figgy. Pitchers who can’t start because they get exploited after 2 turns through the order.

Assuming you carry 7 bullpen guys like the Mets, here is how I would construct a bullpen if I were a GM:

You would have 3 late inning, “shut down” pitchers. For us, this would be Wagner, Sanchez, and Feliciano.

Then you would have 3 “second starters” (or “failed starters” if you must). These slots would be filled by pitchers who are effective for about 3-4 innings at a time, but once a lineup sees them for the 3rd time, they get hit hard. It is due to a lack of a 3rd pitch or just stamina/focus issues. Heilman would be perfect for this role. Figueroa would probably work. Heck, even Lima would be fine (he really was ok for 2-3 innings before imploding).

The last slot you could play with. Maybe you would have a LH specialist, especially if you’re the Mets b/c you have the Phils and Braves in division. Otherwise, you could add another 2nd starter or shut down guy, depending on your needs.

My thoughts with splitting the bullpen are like so: with starters lasting roughly 6 innings, this gives you 4 innings per night the pen needs to pitch. If you had 3-4 guys capable of giving you 2-4 innings per appearance, you wouldn’t need to throw guys every freaking day.

    So, for example: Johan – 6; Heilman – 2; Wagner – 1. Ollie – 5; Heilman – 3; Wagner – 1.

A few more notes on the execution: You wouldn’t want to bring your second starters into the middle of an inning if you didn’t have to. This is why you have 3 shut down pitchers. Say Ollie is cruising along through 5 when things start to unravel in the 6th. Now he’s gone 5.1 innings, and there are men on 1 & 2. You wouldn’t want to bring a “second starter” into this situation. This would call for a shutdown pitcher (or what they used to call a fireman). So you would bring in Sanchez.

The problem is, this would require a whole new way of thinking for managers. Imagine Willie bringing Duaner into the game in the 6th inning? I’m not sure he could even make the phone call. This would require a whole lot of “thinking outside the box.” (And this would apply to most managers, not just Willie, so I don’t mean to pick on him.)

  137. Bob

ED – y the stros? the 86 nlcs?

  138. Gil in Savannah, GA

Doug: totally agree. Vin had a great line back in ‘96 about then-Dodger outfielder Raul Mondesi when he said Raul’s inconsistent play “would drive a saint to drink.”

  139. Bob

    jd – wheres kieth

  140. edfever

Stros from the 80s mets killers never got over it

  141. Doug

If Nelson can get 5 innings tonight, it would be a miracle.

We’re averaging an hour for every two innings, looks like we could be here till around 1:30 am.

  142. RMKMets

These guys should be way more ahead in this game, but it’s another example of poor clutch hitting. This time the goat tag would go to Church followed by WRight for ruining the bases loaded no outs inning.

BTW, what’s Wright’s avg with RISP the last two weeks? He seems to be doing nothing in those spots lately. Figures he has to balance out his hot start with a crap end of April/early May. The reverse of last year…hopefully he turns it back on sooner than later. Last year he did it by making a concentrated effort to hit the ball the other way

  143. edfever

guy from SI forget his name was saying he thinks roster will go to a hockey style – 28 man roster – 3 men deactivated per night

  144. Gil in Savannah, GA

I ask again: Is Kuo channeling pre-cocaine, pre-Jheri curl Doc Gooden here, or what?

  145. RMKMets

If Figgy can have another quick inning the next time out he might be able to pull it off. Their inability to get innings out of their starters is truly getting to be pathetic

  146. edfever

    ouch

  147. RMKMets

Who wants to bet on Castillo getting a day off tomorrow?

  148. Gil in Savannah, GA

Atta baby, Luis, rub some dirt on it.

  149. RMKMets

I really hate it when these guys bunt with someone like Castillo or Reyes on 1st. I mean what the hell do they get paid for out on base?? Let him steal and then try to bunt them to third. In this case it’s the pitcher up to bat, so it makes more sense here, but in other cases, esp when thy do it with Reyes on 1st, I can’t stand it.

  150. Gil in Savannah, GA

I’ve got it! Kuo is channeling Oliver Perez!

  151. RMKMets

Now Jose needs to have a productive AB. No bad swings at a pitch in the dirt. He needs to line one into the OF and score Castillo

  152. edfever

those seats behind home plate at eye level are great

  153. RMKMets

Ok Jose…now look for your pitch and drive it. Good AB thus far…he’s being patient

  154. RMKMets

UGH…I can’t believe he took that one right over the plate. WTF?!? Don’t be that patient!

  155. RMKMets

    Reyes missed another one there

  156. Gil in Savannah, GA

Come on, Jose. You can do it, kid!

  157. Gil in Savannah, GA

    Yikes.

  158. RMKMets

UGH…that was horrendous. If Church F’s this up, its so typical of this team this season

  159. edfever

what is this guys deal he looks unhittable then all over the place is he related to Ollie – distant cousin

  160. Ray Sadecki

    Keith,

Thats what my namesake Sadecki used to be. A 100k “bonus baby” (that was a large sum to pay a draft pick then}signed by the Giants. He failed as a starter and became a very effective long man – spot starter for the Mets in the early 70’s. Special prize to the one who knows who Ray was traded for after the ‘74 season.

  161. edfever

another missed opportunity – Omar should have altered the offense this year – it’s so similar to last years

  162. RMKMets

Great job guys! Nice to see these guys are coming up looking to drive a run in. There’s nothing more aggravating than striking out looking in a spot like that

  163. Gil in Savannah, GA

If you’re scoring at home, Kuo has now struck out half the Mets lineup.

  164. Doug

Ray Sadecki was traded for Joe Torre

  165. Gil in Savannah, GA

Ray Sadecki: Was it Mike Phillips?

  166. RMKMets

Please Figgy…for once a nice clean inning.

  167. Gil in Savannah, GA

Question for everyone: Even if Figueroa survives the 5th without allowing a run, does anyone trust the bullpen to hold a one-run lead (since it appears the Mets offense is spent) the rest of the way?

  168. edfever

Pascucci – is killing it since signing .627 Slg. .350 BA
1B/OF bring him up for the bench player against lefties
    http://neworleans.zephyrs.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Pascucci%20%20RF&pos=&sid=t588&t=p_pbp&pid=407831

  169. RMKMets

Figures…he has an 0-2 count with 2 outs and he serves up a nice fat one.

  170. Keith

Ray, thanks for reading my thesis on bullpen use, haha. No idea about the trivia question though.

  171. RMKMets

Gil: I don’t at all. Which is why I’m hoping for him to make it thru as much of this game as he can. I dont want to see Sosa or Heilman in this game

  172. edfever

Speaking of Phillips heard a funny story today – They were talking about Steve Phillips being an ego manaic – someone saw the Phillips jersey and thought he activated himself- turned out to be catcher jason Phillips- by the way Jason is playing for Camden River Rats independant league

  173. Gil in Savannah, GA

RMK: I hear ya, bro. Just like when Joe Smith had two outs and none on on Sunday, then managed to allow the D-Backs to tie the game, costing Johan a win. I’d love to know how many two-out, none on hits and walks our pitchers have allowed…just like the one Figueroa has just allowed. And this time, I’m NOT at all happy for Blake DeWitt!

  174. edfever

why was church on the ground do long and this is why Figgy shouldnt be a starter – you league the entire game and then give it back you kill any momentum

  175. Doug

Ugh. Where is Pagan on that ball?

  176. RMKMets

UGH. Well the defense is only going to bail you out so many times. WHen you keep throwing up meatballs like that it’s going to get you. And that goes ditto for the garbage situational hitting

  177. Gil in Savannah, GA

edfever: Those expensive seats you mentioned? I think D-Wright just nailed someone in them with that errant throw.

  178. John Delcos

All those missed chances. You knew something like this would happen. It always does. But, don’t blame Figgy. He’s given the Mets more than they had a right to expect.-JD

  179. RMKMets

These guys seriously play like a mediocre team that has no remote aspirations towards anything big. The starting staff is weak, the bullpen is unreliable, and the guys just can’t hit.

  180. edfever

    lol

  181. edfever

Figgy has three keep you in the game innings then its on= longman

  182. RMKMets

JD: I think Figgy is fairgame to receive blame here. If he can’t get the job done then he shouldn’t be on the mound. Is it too much to ask him to get a guy out when he has them 0-2 with 2 outs? Is it too much to ask him not to walk 4 guys?

  183. edfever

im sick of losing games this same way – lets go something here – come on a little rally

  184. TJ

This team is just so hard to like and to watch. It’s just more of the same from last season. But on the bright side, by purchasing the Shea Goodbye pack, I may be in store for the quite literal final game at Shea =/

  185. RMKMets

This is seriously ridiculous. I’d like to give some credit to Kuo, but this pathetic lineup is making it so much easier for him. These guys really are bad

  186. edfever

hey – is kuo in the running for the cy young

  187. RMKMets

Church shouldn’t have to explain anything to him. Figgy was bailed out all game long by the defense.

  188. Gil in Savannah, GA

The Mets need to bring in the Iron Sheik to give them a little motivational speech.

  189. RMKMets

Ed: Put me in there against this lineup and they’ll make me look like an HOFer too. These guys couldn’t hit the ball of a tee

  190. Keith

TJ, look at the brightside… that ticket will be worth a lot more if it is the literal final game at Shea.

  191. Ray Sadecki

Congrats Doug, your special prize is waiting for you here in arizona. Hurry before that cold one get warm. btw my bad, I checked his history and he was drafted by the Cards. We got him from the jints, and he had a 20 win year for the birds in their Championship season of 1964. He came back to the Mets in 1977 to pitch a few innings before hanging them up. Isnt trivia so much better than watching this horror show?

  192. edfever

We lose tonight and were in third place. At least this year the standings will reflect the preformance and I wont have to hear Willie say that maddening statement that it was a tough loss but were still in first

  193. Gil in Savannah, GA

Oh no. Aaron Heilman is in the house. Cover your children’s eyes and ears.

  194. TJ

Willie might modify his statement to say ”...but we’re still within striking distance of first”

  195. RMKMets

The day this team has a pitcher that actually makes it past 7 innings, I think you’ll see the bench clear and a big mob in celebration on the mound.

  196. Gil in Savannah, GA

Where in the world have Andruw Jones’s skills gone?

  197. edfever

two outs and a hit what a surprise

  198. RMKMets

Something I’ve noticed about every pitcher on this staff, esp the younger ones, is that they rarely challenge anyone. Perez gets in trouble because he tries to locate his pitches too much and doesn’t try to throw and challenge people. Figueroa has nibbling this whole game…don’t even get me started on Pelfrey. It’s no wonder why these guys can’t go any distance into the game. What the hell is Peterson telling these guys?

  199. Gil in Savannah, GA

RMK: Notice a disturbing trend here? Another hit allowed with two outs and no one on.

  200. edfever

Rem. the Arte Howe battle answers – willie is just as bad

  201. RMKMets

Here we go, the trademark Heilman loss of command with 2 out

  202. edfever

JD= Willie & Jacket make it to the break

  203. RMKMets

Gees…Schneider looks like Piazza throwing these balls to 2B. What the hell is wrong with him???

  204. edfever

they know schneider thumb is hindering him

  205. Doug

    Well its officially my birthday

I demand a win in the next few hours.

  206. Gil in Savannah, GA

edfever: If you want to check out the managerial post-game meltdown to end all post-game meltdowns, check out former Cubs manager Lee Elia’s classic on youtube—the unedited version. Then check out White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen’s rant earlier this week, in which he paid homage to Elia’s ranting.

  207. Gil in Savannah, GA

    Doug: Happy birthday!

  208. RMKMets

Omar should be the one fired, not Willie. This is simply a bad and poorly assembled roster. There’s no fire on this team and they’re all old. Aside from Wagner, none of these guys seems to care that they suck. They just go thru the motions like lemmings…just watch how they go 1-2-3 here

  209. edfever

I don’t think we need Lou Pinella but i dont think willie makes adjustments – and theres a disconnect with reality – he wonders why fans are mad and thinjs they havent gotten over last year- and somehow doesnt realize the team is playing the exact same way and thats why their mad becasue they see whats happening when he doesn’t

  210. Gil in Savannah, GA

JD: When’s the last time a pitcher had double digits in strikeouts in relief? Kuo’s damn close.

  211. edfever

wow cy young kuo had another clean inning

  212. edfever

we could script these games, mets get a small lead, let numerous opportunities go by the way side, other team comes back on our starter, starter leaves early, pen gives up add on runs while our offense looks completely inept against some journeyman who usually has a huge ERA before facing us

  213. Gil in Savannah, GA

edfever: I’m telling you, the Iron Sheik, not Piniella, s the answer.

  214. Doug

Randy Johnson struck out 16 Padres in “relief” in 2001.

If my memory is correct Johnson basically started a game that was postponed, I think for some sort of stadium problem the night before.

  215. Gil in Savannah, GA

RMK: Two outs, nobody on. Whaddaya wanna bet Heilman allows a baserunner?

  216. RMKMets

That’s it Im out. Im sick of watching these pathetic losers. They clearly shut it off for the nite in the 4th. Hopefully they salvage this tomorrow.

  217. Gil in Savannah, GA

Uh, what exactly was David Wright looking for on that 0-2 pitch?

  218. Doug

    This game is taking forever.

I hope JD is getting paid by the hour.

3 AM would be a nice time to hit the 8th.

  219. edfever

.175 with Two outs RISP thats not major league quality offense…

  220. Stillsane

I can see that Willie is trying extra hard to impress his old mentor. Will someone please wake him up so that he can get ready to give his failure to perform, did not execute speech ready? He could not look less interested. That constant scowl thing after three years has become very old. If we he wants to look to blame someone, he should start looking in the mirror. The Mets might as well run themselves.

  221. Stillsane

Andruw Jones must have been looking for the same pitch that David Wright was.

  222. Gil in Savannah, GA

If Elvis were alive and a Mets fan, he’s have shot out the TV with his gat by now.

  223. Gil in Savannah, GA

Oh for someone on this team to destroy the post-game spread table just for kicks and giggles.

  224. John Delcos

Hi guys … miss me? Just filed my gamer. This should be over soon. Wonder what the boys will have to say. They can’t be happy. ... Happy Birthday Doug. ... It’s been a pleasure talking with you all tonight. ... Catch you later.-JD

  225. Gil in Savannah, GA

Just watch. Schneider’s gonna pop his first homer of the year right here.

  226. Gil in Savannah, GA

OK. Maybe not. Castillo’s gonna get it done with a single.

  227. edfever

    called strike three

  228. Gil in Savannah, GA

    Well, maybe not.
    See y’all later.

  229. Stillsane

What ever happened to protecting the plate???? Nice play Castillo. You must have been watching David Wright.

  230. Ray Sadecki

The only thing this team is missing is Andrew Jones. A strikeout just waiting to happen. Overpaid, past his prime, out of shape, just got paid, going through the motions, wake me up when the game is over.

Is this the worst loss of the season? hard to tell. theres been so many just like this. Delgado overwhelmed by an 89 mph fastball? seen that movie before. Wright and Reyes contribute nothing at the plate? seen that one too.
Beltran has been invisible all year. Might as well stay on the bench.
Do you know what this team needs? Jeff Kent. Yeah, a nasty bastard who wants to win at all costs.

  231. Josh

I’d have to categorize this loss as the worst of the season, because it completely epitomizes everything that has gone wrong this season… Early leads, lack of add on runs, blowing that early lead, and then doing nothing for the rest of the game…

This team doesn’t need a “winner” like David Eckstein or stupid garbage like that. What they really need is a starter who can go more than 6 innings once in a while, or someone who can actually get a clutch hit…

BTW, Can someone tell me what the Loverboy’s average is since the day he appeared on Letterman???

  232. sloppy

Yes Josh it was the worst loss of the season. All of the flaws were exposed in ione game. Clutch hitting and the Mets have been extreme opposites for more than and for more than this season. Starting pitching claimed to be the long suit of this team by many, is anything but. Maine is trying to be a solid # 2 but still hasn’t found that consistency to be one. Perez is fragile and like I said early on when the brainless one blasted him for going 5.2 scoreless innings, what do you do when he goes bad? You gotta know who you can blast and who you have to hug, and they blasted the wrong guy and its going to hurt. The pen isn’t as bad as everyone claims. They are eing overmanaged in every closes game because its ovbvious they can’t give up a run because the offense is just bad.
And finally, Luis Castillo has to be moved out the 8 hole. And I’m not going to blame Church (much to scoopcoop’s chagrin I’m sure). But he has been made totally useless there. His best tool, the bunt, is gone, he won’t be walked because his hits are so short he can only cost you one run ever, he is the worst suited # 8 guy around.
And why were people blasting Willie last night? He did a double steal with Alou!!!!! He pitched a releiver for 2 good innings. Maybe he forgot to give the pitchers a scouting report on some unknown 3rd baseman who looks like Eddie Mathews these last two nights? I doubt it….

  233. Steve C.

explain why the first baseman consistently watches the ball bounce by him?

  234. tomg

The Mets left 24 men on base. That is truly pathetic. This team is pathetic. I now can understand why HellofromDC was a met fan at one time but has now gone to the dark side. This team will do that to there fans. I have had it with the Mets myself, screw Omar, he is the jackass that built this team. This team is a cast of characters that don’t know how to win. Omar has built a team of a bunch of players with no character, passion, energy, whatever you want to call it but this is not a good team.

  235. Steve C.

tomg: 24 is nothing. I have seen far worse met games than these.
    ;-)

  236. Dan Gurney

One thing about Ray Sadecki not mentioned earlier.
The Cards traded Sadecki to the Giants for Orlando Cepeda (Giants fans still complaining about that deal). The Cards later traded Cepeda for Joe Torre and a few years later traded Torre for Sadecki (I think they wanted to get a young Keith Hernandez in the lineup and they thought Ken Reitz would be a star. Mr April was Ken Reitz. He would get off to a good start, proclaim year was different and would end up with a 7 HR .260 year). How did the Mets get Sadecki? I had to look it up..I thought they traded OF Dave Marshall (not to be confused with Jim Marshall, first Met to get booed because the Opening Day crowd at the Polo Grounds wanted Gil Hodges). actually Marshall came with Sadecki for Jim Gosger and Bob Heise.

Anything to avoid talking about what a frustrating game/series. take two of three from the D Backs and now it’s hoping we salvage a game?? I beginning to think this franchise is doomed to give us only one first place year out of every 15, with 5 years of treading water followed by 5-7 of losing.

  237. mlj

I am getting the feeling that we are destined to be a .500 team this year. I don’t really know for sure if we are very talented, but mismanaged, or just flat over rated. What I do know is I am looking at a mediocre team.

    http://www.myteamrivals.typepad.com/mr_mets-daily

  238. Steve (The Original)

    It’s only May. :-)

  239. HellofromDC/PelhamPkwy

To tomg; Other than saying I went to the dark side, I agree with you 100%.

Anyway little Metsies I hope you start doing better because I cannot pound on the Metsies as good or as much as you yourselves do….. Yesterday’s loss almost, I repeat almost made me feel bad for all of you good little Metsies, but not the bad Metsies.
Little Metsies like tomg and Mr Scoopy and dave and clm and Tiffany and Metsfan deserve better than this rotten bunch of Omar-ites give you every night. You are suffering because of the sins of your evil little Metsie brothers and sisters!!!!! But just think football camps open soon and the happy days of the Giants championship reign will be back to cheer you all up, except of course some of you are probably Jetsie fans as well as Metsie fans, so I can’t help you with that big problem…...

If it makes you happy we suffered a terrible defeat also last night, but hey, its so much more fun with no expectations isn’t it?

Almost lunch time… Gotta go… See you for the big game maybe, if you are lucky!!!!!!

    Is that nicer tomg?

  240. HellofromDC/PelhamPkwy

Ah…just got back from taking a nice post lunch dump. Man I stunk up the house with that one.

Ok little metsies…where you at? I have nothing better to do than to come here and harass all you guys. Why aren’t you writing back? Is it because I’ve become too poeth?

    PS: “Buck buck.”

  241. Mike

JD- I know you mentioned recently about not banning DC because technically, he’s not doing anything obscene or against the rules.

That being said, I really think you need to reconsider. I, for one, love to read your blog, but his posts constantly make it impossible to enjoy the site. You can say, “just ignore it” but it really is rather difficult when I’m trying to read everyone’s opinions and his keep popping up everytime I hit refresh.

I don’t care that he doesn’t like the Mets…that means nothing to me, but his inane and childish ramblings just take away the enjoyment from this blog.

I ask you to please consider doing something about it, or you will lose at least one reader because of it.

  242. RMKMets

DC comes here and posts just to piss people off. That’s the annoying thing. Every now and then though, he does make some good points. There’s freedom of speech so as long as he doesn’t make any obscene posts, etc he shouldn’t be banned.

That said, JD, is there any way to institute an ignore function? I know it’s probably kind of difficult given the rather anonmyous nature of this blog, but something to consider.

  243. Tiffany

As a matter of disclosure, DC and I are now officially engaged!!!

  244. Steve C.

DC. explain to me what does Poeth mean. My vocabulary is quite well rounded and broad. but for the life of me. i have no clue what you mean…

  245. DC

Since we’re engaged I can us my shorter name….Tiffany and I will be married at home plate in ugly Shea Stadium wearing our wonderful David Wright jersies….. Delcos will perform the ceremony. His first LOHUD Mets blog wedding….

  246. dave

    Steve,

I believe the DC post saying he is going to lunch is the real one the next one was the pretender.

  247. dave

    Keith,

I read your post about the pen. I believe that is the way pens used to be designed. The current generation is a waste of time. Half our pen is made up of situational pitchers. There should be only one. You are either a closer or someone who wants to be or you are a failed starter who comes in to pitch the rest of the game.

  248. dave

    Mike,

I used to feel the same about our friend from DC. However, he is a unique voice on this forum who occasionally brings something interesting to the table.

There is a lot of vitriol on this site and even though he likes to tag people here he does it with humor, even if many here do not appreciate it.

I for one do not want to see him banned. It breaks up the monotony.

    Dave

  249. tomg

    HellofromDC/PelhamPkwy,

Yes, that I can take, that was much more professional and I now understand you. Actually HellofromDC/PelhamPkwy, maybe I’ve gone to the dark side instead of you because It won’t bother me anymore if you come on this blog and kill the mets. I’ll actually back you up because this franchise deserves a beating. Unfortunately I am also a jet fan so you can understand my pain.
