Mets Chat Room: Perez rocked again.

May
5

Willie Randolph began the night saying he’s not concerned about Oliver Perez. He ended it by saying he’s still in the rotation.

Perez cut the walks tonight, but gave up three homers to the Dodgers. I’ve been calling him heads-or-tails for almost two years now, but more often than not he’s landing on his tail.

IN A NUTSHELL (LA 5, Mets 1)

Perez gives up three hits; the Mets leave a four runners in scoring position in the first four innings.

IN THE CLUBHOUSE

Randolph on Perez:  “He’s in my rotation and will stay there until we deem that we have to make a change.”

Perez on the homers:   “I did everything I can. It happens. Sometimes I make mistakes and they hit it.”

Moises Alou on missed opportunities:  “It was one of those games where we had opportunities. But, we didn’t come up with the key hit. If we could’ve come up with some clutch hits it could have been a different game.”

IN-GAME ANALYSIS

1st INNING: Nice start by OP. LA 2, Mets 0.
3rd INNING: Can’t anybody here hit with RISP?
5th INNING: Perez keeping the walks down. The home runs are another matter. LA 5, Mets 0.
9th INNING: I am so glad this is over. LA 5, Mets 1.

    Tweeter and the Monkey Man?

  2. Metsie

    Will Billy's message sink in?

    No.

Perez is what he is. I am not sure how to put this politically correct so I will just put it out there…I think Perez is dimwitted/slow/slightly retarded.

Every time I see him interviewed, something just doesn't seem "right" with Perez. I have been calling him an idiot savant for some time now.

His requested song at Shea when he take the mound is "You're Know You're Gonna Be Mine". Why would he pick that song? Something is not right with this guy.

  3. Josh

Erm, I don't think Perez is "retarded"...

You say something doesn't seem "right" when he's interviewed… I disagree… He doesn't show well in interviews because he has a very deep accent and doesn't speak great English, so it's difficult to understand him..

As for his song choice… so what? Last year, David Wright's song was Cassie's "Me&U", but I'm not going to accuse him of being gay…

I do expect a good start from him though, because he is due…

  4. Metsie

Actually, Perez speaks English just fine. I can distinguish between someone who isn't fluent in English and someone who is just a bit "off". Being "off" transcends language and culture..

Jose Reyes' 2nd language is English and he speaks with a thick accent, he appears to be normal. The 2 Carloses both speak very good English, they too are normal. If I didn't know any better, I would think Johan Santana was born in the US. He speaks that well.

Start paying attention to Oliver Perez when he is interviewed, there is something not right about him…and it isn't cultural.

  5. Gil in Savannah, GA

OK, we're off to a great start, insulting people who are mentally challenged and gay men. Anyone else in the posters' crosshairs? :)
And Jon, you should replace the Traveling Wilburys in your headphones with Randy Newman's "I Love L.A." Great city. I say that even after having lived in San Diego the last 10 years and San Diegans player hating on L.A.
And there's no better baseball stadium on the planet than Dodger Stadium.
    Let's Go Mets!

  6. Metsie

Oh and I did not accuse Perez of being gay, I guess that is your own bias coming to light.

I just wonder why that would be his song. He was 10 or 11 when that song was released AND he gre up in Mexico. It is not exactly a classic song and is just a strange choice.

  7. Gil in Savannah, GA

No, Metsie. I was referring to a comment aimed at David Wright "accusing" him of being gay because of his theme music.

  8. JM

Perez is pretty thick. Not sure our satellites reach that far out . . .

  9. Metsie

    Gil,

Where exactly did I insult retarded people?

  10. RG

Ollie's English is not the greatest. To be on the safe side he sticks to cliches. It's bad enough how the media and fans jump over everything a player says. For guys whose first language is not English they might be extra concerned that what they say might not be taken the right way.

  11. Gil in Savannah, GA

"I think Perez is dimwitted/slow/slightly retarded."
People who are developmentally challenged generally feel stigmatized, insulted by labels like "dimwitted," "slow" and "retarded."
Would you call a man or woman using a wheelchair a "cripple"?

  12. JM

The LA tv announcer just called Perez "somewhat erratic." Yeah, and Furcal just hit that ball somewhat into the next county.

  13. edfever

Yeah, that sunk in alright about 400ft worth of sinking

  14. John Delcos

On the bright side, at least he's not walking anybody. You can't give up a HR on an 0-and-2 count.-JD

  15. Gil in Savannah, GA

Well, Wagner's dissing Oliver sure helped, didn't it?
He tells him to throw strikes, he does and it's already 1-0, LA.

  16. tomg

Laddies and gentlemen, meet our bull pen killer, Oliver perez!!!

  17. JM

A lot of guys can shake off a start like this. I've seen Glavine do it plenty. We shall see with Oliver.

  18. Metsie

So basically you are calling th PC police on me because I have an opinion about Perez. Is he clinically diagnosed as being retarded?

If I were referring to Sid Fernandez's excessive weight, would I be allowed to call him fat? Or would it be waist challenged?

  19. Gil in Savannah, GA

JM: The LA announcer is the legendary Vin Scully. With his possible retirement after this year, enjoy him while you can.

  20. JM

    That oughta wake him up.

  21. JM

I think he can go 3 today, easy.

  22. tomg

To think we gave up nady for a 40 year old average relief pitcher and a young left handed pitcher who had a history of not maxing out his potential. it looks to me that perez is going backwards. I've said it before and I will say it all season, good bye Oliver Perez, don't let the door hit you on your way out. Omar, please, take the #1 draft pick from the team who signs this bum.

  23. JM

Stop the game, grab the ball.

  24. Gil in Savannah, GA

Metsie: I'm not calling the PC cops on you, just asking you to consider looking at it from a different perspective. As for how to classify Sid Fernandez's weight management, you'll have to take that question to Jenny Craig! :)

  25. John Delcos

Three innings? That's the way to go out on the limb.-JD

  26. Gil in Savannah, GA

There goes Delgado again. He's finished, right?

  27. JM

Forgive me if OP doesn't inspire confidence.

  28. JM

Schneider can't put the ball in play? Just garbage.

  29. Gil in Savannah, GA

Bottom of the order and a pretty good bunter up there in Schneider. With Beltran on third a suicide squeeze would've been a good idea there.

  30. tomg

great job schneider, great job!! all you need is to make contact to get a run and he strikes out on three pitches. I can see already where this game is going. Oh by the way, the team to beat IMO is up 2-1 in arizona.

  31. John Delcos

    Waist challenged? Funny.-JD

  32. BH

Absolutely pathetic, I'm sorry but that isn't Santana or Smoltz pitching, Schneider has to at least put the @#$%!#$^% ball in play. Striking out with men on base and less than 2 outs should be an automatic fine….or a punch in the face. It's been like this all spring too.

  33. edfever

yeah, Billy's comments sunk in about 400ft worth…..a of course he gets wild after that

Great going Alomar hold Beltran with Schneider do up… rather have him out at the plate then stuck at third

  34. John Delcos

They aren't entirely laid back here. Nice round of boos for Andruw Jones. But, when it comes to booing, nobody does it like they do in NY, Philly and Boston.-JD

  35. JM

They are booing Andruw Jones. Guess Shea fans aren't the only ones.

  36. Mike

I've never seen a team struggle with men on third and less than outs like the Mets.

No one changes their approach, everyone swings for the fences. For Christs' sake, just tap the ball and the run would have scored.

No, instead I think we'll swing at a ball that is headed towards my face.

  37. Metsie

They aren't booing, they are saying "duuude". They like to say that in California.

  38. tomg

philly up 5-1 in arizona, do you hear that beltran, carlos do you hear me?? carlos??

  39. Mike

Dude…the Phils are 1/2 game better than NY thus far.

    You are kidding, right?

  40. JM

I still can't get over the fact that both Carloses had base hits in the SAME inning – maybe the first time all season – and they couldn't score. I am stupified.

  41. tomg

Dude??, I haven't heard anybody call me dude since the late 70's early 80's. i didn't think that word was even used anymore, interesting.

  42. JM

    Mike,

    You're spot on. They're miserable w/ a guy on 3rd less than 2 out.

  43. Mike

edfever-I can't completely blame Alomar there. It would have been a pretty close play, but if he gets out, you have Delgado at 2nd/3rd with two outs.

You have to have faith that the the batter coming up with a guy on third and less/2 outs can at least MAKE CONTACT.

  44. edfever

We've got one player hitting over 300, regarless of pitching that wont cut it long term…..

    JD

what they decide on Turnbow any scoop

  45. JM

    Good AB Jose!

  46. Gil in Savannah, GA

tomg: Dude, ever seen those Bud Light ads with the guys using "Dude" alternately as a question, exclamation and suggestion? Totally SoCal, dude. I lived there the last 10 years—it's a West Coast thing.

  47. John Delcos

To Ed: They are thinking about him. They won't trade for him. If they do anything, they'll wait out the 10 days, then sign him as a FA if they like him. They aren't about to give up anything.-JD

  48. Mike

You don't need multiple guys to hit over .300 (though it certainly helps). This team has shown that they will draw walks and get on base.

The problem last year and so far this season has been the hitting w/ RISP. It's below average and when there are two outs, it's downright horrific.

  49. Metsie

Plenty of people in the east say it too. Everyone at my college said it in the early 90's

  50. edfever

Weve been bad at situational hitting for about a year, fly ball gets a run but we can't seem to get a fly ball. When your at the bottom of the order you take that risk IMO

  51. Gil in Savannah, GA

edfever's got a great question about Turnbow. I'd take a flyer on him and have him try working out his issues in Triple A—where I'd also send Heilman, who, believe it or not, still has options.

  52. Metsie

    JD—
Do you think the Mets will go after Jacque Jones? He could be a good platoon option in LF and would allow the Mets to package Pagan or Chavez in a trade to address their various other needs.

  53. Mike

Geez…this team is so fun to watch.

Is ANYONE capable of getting a hit with a RISP???

    I mean, A-N-Y-O-N-E?

  54. BH

Ok what is heck is up with the Mets' bats? This is getting a little ridiculous. Somebody needs to answer for this, I don't know who, and I don't even know the why, but this is just sad.

  55. tomg

I actually like Jacque Jones when he played for the twins, he is definitely better than Pagan. I would take a chance on him.

  56. Gil in Savannah, GA

Nice play there by Delgado and Ollie. Web gem.

  57. tomg

Did anybody tell the mets that the guy on the mound isn't Cy Young, geez!!!, pathetic.

  58. John Delcos

Great play by Perez. Right dudes?-JD

  59. John Delcos

    Dudes? I didn't say that. Sorry.-JD

  60. Metsie

    Fer sure. Totally.

  61. edfever

    JD,

whos going to make room for Wise and Armas has great numbers in NO any discussion of him coming up as a true longman

  62. Gil in Savannah, GA

Fo shizzle. Gnarly. Hella cool. Gettin' hyphy.

  63. tomg

Maybe this is one of those things where the mets hitters haven't seen this guy and it will take the 3rd or 4th at bats before they figure out how to hit him. Now isn't that a positive outlook.

  64. John Delcos

To Ed: Great question. I don't know. Willie said he hasn't thought about it. I'm sure he has, but isn't saying. No sense to right now.-JD

  65. Metsie

Anyone else want to reach through their TV and punch Ian Ziering in the face? He's sitting in the first row, right behind the plate wearing a Dogers jacket….and he's from NJ.

  66. John Delcos

Tomg: The third or fourth AB would make it the 8th or 9th inning, right?-JD

  67. edfever

Heilman has less then five professional years of baseball, which extends his option years into his fourth season so yes he has options til he acquires 172 days in his fifth which which will come sometime this season.

  68. Metsie

What has Willie ever thought about (except how much he loves veterans)?

  69. John Delcos

    What, no Alyssa Milano?-JD

  70. tomg

It figures, now he makes contact and get a hit!!!

  71. Mike

Hopefully Castillo proves me wrong, but you're seeing the ONE negative of having Church hit second.

The bottom of the order is inept, by and large.

  72. tomg

JD, I guess it would, better late than never, right DUDE!!!

  73. Gil in Savannah, GA

    Ooooooh. Alyssa Milano. :)

  74. John Delcos

Castro update: He caught nine innings in a rehab game and hit a 2-run homer.-JD

  75. Metsie

    Sadly, no.
Alyssa Milano would be much better to look at.

  76. tomg

Castillo hits like a little girl!!!!

  77. Mike

Castillo as a LH hitter is atrocious.

I'm serious, the guy wouldn't hit the ball out of the infield if it was on a tee.

He has now singlehandedly cost this team 3 runs.

  78. edfever

Castillo getting killed down here; with church on fire this team stacks up best like this….

Reyes, Castillo, Church, Wright, Beltran, Alou, Delgado, Schneider

Reyes gets on, Castillo moves him over, Church drives him in, with one out they have Wright and Beltran to try and tack on a run by driving in Church

  79. Gil in Savannah, GA

He might not be Cy Young, but I'd take Chad Billingsley over Mike Pelfrey any day of the week.

  80. Metsie

If the top of the order was clicking tonight like it has with Church at #2 in the past, it wouldn't matter that the bottom of the order was horrible.

  81. alex

It's a safe bet that Alyssa Milano is at the game. She goes to something like 80% of Dodger home games.

As for Ian – I've worked with him last year and his house has a lot of paraphernalia from Yankee greats. but he's been a converted Dodgers fan since he's been living out here for 20 years or so. He's also a really nice down to earth guy, so he's still got plenty of east coast left in him.

  82. Josh

    Luis Castillo is f**kin worthless…

    BTW, I was NOT calling D-Wright gay…

  83. Gil in Savannah, GA

Castillo hitting eighth has made little sense to me. Castillo is ideal behind Reyes as a secondary leadoff hitter and when Reyes is on he can spoil pitch after pitch by fouling them off and he's also useful bunting Reyes over.

  84. John Delcos

Four innings, five runners left. Four in scoring position.-JD

  85. John Delcos

Note on Wise: He'll pitch Tues and Wed, and could be brought up this weekend.-JD

  86. edfever

those grounds balls that have ended innings would be very productive move overs or even advances to third if Reyes stole second

  87. tomg

    Gil in Savannah, GA,

somehow I think you will see Castillo back hitting second again.

  88. Metsie

    Gil—
You are talking as if Castillo were younger and healthier.

  89. Josh

That's why Church is ideal lower in the lineup; there's absolutely no threat in it after the #6 hole…

  90. JM

Can't waste a start where Ollie actually gives the team a chance. Gotta get him some runs.

  91. edfever

one win here they go home 500 against the wests best not bad, just dont get swept

  92. Gil in Savannah, GA

Maybe I've been in Cali too long, dudes.
Granted, I was in New York off and on the last couple of years and at Shea many times, but from what I've been reading here lately, it seems like my fellow New York fans have gone from "what have you done for me lately?" to "what the $#% have you done for me in your last &%$#$& at-bat??!!" and "what the &% did you do for me on the last %$#$&*( pitch you (*&%& threw??!!"
    It's only the 4th inning.
And it's the first week in May.
I know September of last year is still a fresh wound, but it's a long season.
Lotta baseball left to be played.

  93. Metsie

    What is with Schneider?

  94. edfever

best hitter should hit three and thats church right now play the hot hand. this team is to worried about their batting position as a status symbol. Wright should be cleanup not Beltran hitting 200 and they made a big deal about moving down Delgado.

  95. JM

Is there anyone here who thinks this team could go on a streak and win 9 of 10? I don't. There are so many ugly spots it doesn't seem possible.

  96. tomg

    Gil in Savannah, GA,

After last year, I've lost allot of faith in this team. It's all about the character of a team that wins and I don't like the character of this team. I hope they prove me wrong but i doubt it.

  97. Metsie

    Gil

These games count as much as the ones played in September.

If the Mets won 2 more games last May, they make the post season

  98. John Delcos

OK, they got out of the inning without a run scored. But, Castillo has to make some kind of effort to back up second on the steal. I mean, at least think about backing up if nothing else.-JD

  99. Gil in Savannah, GA

ed: No way I move D-Wright outta the third hole. He's our best hitter. I'd rather have him up than anyone else on the team with the game on the line.

  100. edfever

One side syas their is no way this much talent can cont. to hit like this

but then theres another that says I've said that since June of last year so maybe this collection cant play together

    i feel like golum

  101. JM

Don't worry JD, he'll back up the next one.

  102. John Delcos

To edfever: I would like to think the Mets are better than they are. I really do. I'm not the negative bastard some people think. But, here's something we should all consider. Maybe they aren't. Maybe this is as good as it gets. Have to consider all the possibilities.-JD

  103. Josh

    Wow…. David just got robbed..

  104. Gil in Savannah, GA

tomg and Metsie: Believe me, this team has broken my heart more times than I can count in the 38 years I've been watching them. And no way am I saying these games don't count.
But in those 38 years, I've learned that the season is a marathon and not a sprint and I've seen lots of teams that looked dead in the early going, then got hot in the second half and made the playoffs, or won it all.
    Can the Mets do that?
We'll all eventually find out, but they certainly have the talent. Whether they have the character, we'll also find out.
If anyone told you last October that four months later, Eli Manning would lead the Giants to a Super Bowl victory over the mighty Patriots, would any of you have believed it?
How about the Rockies last year, who only qualified for the post-season after playing 163 games?
Granted, those are different teams have different players and different energy, but there's still a lot to find out about this year's Mets.

  105. JM

    JD,

Fans just don't like to here the truth about their team. Anyone who thinks this is much more than .500 team isn't relying on objective evidence. There is none to inform such a belief.

  106. JM

    Sorry, hear.

  107. Mike

    Game over.

Amazing that this team can't put together a streak of winning 8-of-10 or so that even the WORST teams do.

  108. alex

in the immortal words of bill parcells, you are what your record says you are.

which in this case means a team slightly better than .500

will they turn out to be better than that? i don't know. but i don't see any reason not to expect the mets to continue to play inconsistently the rest of the season and finish somewhere btwn 85-88 wins.

  109. dave

Who said you are what your record says?

  110. Gil in Savannah, GA

Nice moment there for Blake DeWitt.
Kid hits his first Major League homer, gets the momentary silent treatment from his teammates, then gets pounded on by his mates.
I tip my hat to the kid.

  111. JM

    tuna

  112. edfever

After last year Omar should have made a shake up in the line up too much stayed the same

  113. Mike

    I don't.

    F*ck him.

  114. dave

    JM/Alex

    thanks

  115. RMKMets

These guys are so pathetic with the bat. I feel like any slumping pitcher can face this team and easily right themselves. I mean Billingsley has given them plenty of opportunity to score and they keep letting him off the hook. Good teams take advantage and these guys consistently don't.

On the bright side, at least Perez hasn't been BB happy…the HRs were with no one on.

  116. dave

I was gonna say Ollie is pitching ok.. but with this walk i dont like his body language

  117. RMKMets

Ugh…I jinxed him. What a bum…he really sucks.

  118. edfever

I thought it was hard to hit HR in this park at night

  119. dave

Is it worth it to pull him or leave him in to battle?

  120. Josh

JM- I disagree with your assessment they've shown nothing. They have played very well at times this season.. They've taken 4/6 from the Phillies, they beat Hudson and Smoltz after losing the 1st game, and they just took 2/3 from the best team in the majors… Problem is, they don't know how to keep it up…

Oh, and f*ck Oliver Perez. I don't want that mental midget anywhere near this team next year…

  121. RMKMets

JD: Has there been any thought given to demoting Perez and trying to give a shot to Armas or anyone else? This guy is an automatic loss every 5 days. He really really SUCKS

  122. Gil in Savannah, GA

Ah, Mike, c'mon. Don't player-hate on the rook.
Give DeWitt credit. Give Kemp credit and Furcal credit, too, while you're at it. We're getting outplayed so far tonight in all facets of the game.

  123. RMKMets

Leave the loser out there and let him get beat around. Maybe he'll learn something. He's such a useless bum…at the least let him eat some more innings so this start has some benefit

  124. tomg

Met fans, keep telling yourselves it's early and it's a long season. I'll give you that it's a long season because it is going to be a long season. This team sucks, period. I don't like the make up of this team. This is not a team that is good enough to make the playoffs. There offense or there pitching isn't good enough to go on a long winning streak. This is a slightly above .500 team. We will be seeing this crap all year long.

  125. alex

the mets should leave him in for a couple of reasons.

    a. he owes the bullpen for last start.

    b. the higher that era climbs, the less he's gonna be getting paid next year – so maybe at some point he starts to realize he better start pitching like a real pitcher again.

    c. the offense hasn't shown any signs of climbing back into this game, so the game was just as out of reach at 3-0 as it is now at 5-0

  126. John Delcos

I leave in Perez just to stay out of the bullpen. Billingsley, by the way, is 1-4 with a 5.20 ERA. They only have three hits tonight. Go figure.-JD

  127. edfever

    Santana, Maine, Armas, Pelfrey, Figgy

Wagner, Sanchez, Heilman, Feliciano, Wise, Show, Perez

Send down Sosa and still have Vargas in case Figgy struggles

  128. John Delcos

    OK, four hits.-JD

  129. edfever

Leave him in five runs is alot for this offense to come back from

  130. JM

    Josh,

Exactly! They play well for a few games, and then tank for a few. So I say again, they haven't shown me that they can be good consistently, that they are better than an 86 win team. I'd love for them to prove me wrong, but that would mean they would have to stop sucking so regularly.

  131. tomg

I would leave Perez in there until his arm falls off!!, save the pen, there not coming back from 5 runs.

  132. RMKMets

Tomg: It IS early…the Phillies were worse than this at this time last year and then they turned it on. The Yankees have done the same thing on multiple occasions.

That said, I do agree with you that the makeup of this team sucks. They are too old, and there is not a bat on this team that I have that much confidence in. Wright can't get anything done because he's got crap behind him in the lineup. The staff is mediocre…it's Santana, and then a bunch of guys who together might amt to 9 innings in a game…and the bullpen (pre-Wagner) is erratic.

  133. edfever

    JD-

you should look up the last time we came back from a five run deficit, it feels insurmountable. But in 06 with basically the same offense you never felt out of it

  134. RMKMets

JD: That goes back to my point…how many times the last two yrs have we seen a struggling pitcher come in and right themselves against this team. It's a mark of how inconsistent this team is.

  135. RMKMets

This umps strike zone has been very inconsistent, especially with the low strikes.

  136. JM

    JD,

The Mets do look like they're swinging broom sticks at golf balls, but Billingsley is actually a pretty good pitcher. He won 12 games last year in only 20 starts, 3.31 ERA.

  137. RMKMets

Trademark Delgado out there…weak groundball right into the shift. Why this guy never even TRIES to go the other way where he has a huge alley down the line is beyond me. A good hitter could easily go on a tear against a defense like that

  138. RMKMets

JM: They aren't taking advantage of the chances that Billingsley is giving them. But it's been their trademark all season so far. They crap their pants collectively when there's a RISP

  139. Josh

John- That ERA is misleading.. Chad had 40 Ks in 29.1 innings before this game, and he had a .397 BABPIP against him to begin the year, so he was very unlucky to begin the season… That being said, we've blown many opportunities against him tonight..

  140. alex

well, one thing is for certain.

i'm glad i opted to go to tomorrow night's game instead of tonight.

  141. edfever

You cant expect much when only one player is hitting over .300 in the entire starting line-up with no injuries. Just as much as the rotation needed Santana this team needed a loudmouth hard charging consitent bat

  142. RMKMets

I dunno what this team needs…they just lack that character that the had in '06. When they were behind you kinda always had a feeling that they would rally with the bats. They need a literal spark plug.

UGH…meanwhile the Phils are killing the D'Backs.

  143. RMKMets

If Perez can go at least 7 in this game then maybe he's at least proven something in the way of guts.

I dont want this guy back next year and if the Mets can somehow find a way to trade him this year and get something of use back for him then I think they should do it. He's never going to amt to anything special in this league.

  144. RMKMets

Look at this guy…he's not even close on a 3-0 pitch. Seriously…does he have his eyes open when he throws??

  145. Gil in Savannah, GA

JD: Billingsley is better than his record indicates.
As you're trying to figure out how he's beating the Mets, I bet the Braves and Brewers and the beat writers who cover those teams are wondering how Nelson Figueroa managed to make those teams' hitters look so impotent.

  146. John Delcos

Gil: Maybe so, but doesn't it indicate that the Mets should be capable of more than one run on five hits? All those runners they left on base. It's not as if they didn't have a chance.-JD

  147. RMKMets

Castillo goes up to the plate looking to walk. Not a bad mentality, EXCEPT for the fact that he has that mentality with EVERY at bat…even when someone's in scoring position.

  148. Gil in Savannah, GA

I'll say it again: I'd take Chad Billingsley over Mike Pelfrey any day.

  149. RMKMets

JD: I'm with you on that. Now look, they have the leadoff man on…it looks like Willie is gonna go to Pagan now with a relief man coming in. Why do I feel a GIDP coming up here, followed by Reyes flying out?

  150. RMKMets

Gil: That's like saying you'd rather drink water over urine any day.

  151. edfever

JD- any rumblings about Freddy Garcia

  152. John Delcos

RMKMets: Nobody makes a point quite like you.-JD

  153. Gil in Savannah, GA

JD: Of course the Mets should be more capable, but looking at it from a different perspective, give Billingsley credit. He got out of those tough spots and made the pitches he needed to make. Pretty poised for a young pitcher.

  154. RMKMets

What's the actual scouting report on Pagan's defense? I thought he was supposed to be good, but he was kind of a liability of late before Alou came back…and then Francesa (who doesn't know anything about nondescript players anyways) keeps saying the guy can't field

  155. RMKMets

Two great AB's there by Reyes and Pagan. Way to go guys…brilliant.

  156. Gil in Savannah, GA

Another bad at-bat by Mr. Reyes.
Swinging at a first-pitch pitcher's pitch and meekly flying out to right. At 24, he still has much to learn about situational hitting.

  157. RMKMets

    JD: I try…haha.

  158. Gil in Savannah, GA

RMKMets: Water over urine? LOL! :)

  159. edfever

And now the only player hitting over 300 is 0-7 ugh

  160. RMKMets

Well…we can blame this start on Perez all we want, but we all know he sucks, so 5 runs is probably about right for him. The fact that the guys seemed to have left their bats in AZ is maddening. You just can't get excited about this team b/c just when you think maybe they've turned a corner, they do this. It's not enough to win series…they need to go on a nice sustained streak to really right things.

  161. edfever

Thats why he shouldnt hit 8th – great mentality when your at the top of the order but stupid with the pitcher behind him

  162. Gil in Savannah, GA

    RMK: It's no lie—Pagan can't field.
I was there in Atlanta when he misplayed a fly ball that cost Johan Santana a run, in my hotel room in Belize watching a highlight o him misplaying a ball in Philly and on my couch drinking…a beer watching him misplay a fly ball in that 13-1 loss at Shea.
    Roger Cedeno would've been embarrassed.

  163. edfever

Delgado, Ollie and Heilman for Rowand and a minor league pitcher from SF

  164. RMKMets

The guy came up as an OF so it's interesting how bad he is

  165. RMKMets

Gary and Ron are talking about what they're goign to do when Wise comes back. Two issues I have with this:

    1) Since when did Steve Wise become some sort of good pitcher? He wasn't all that great in the one or two appearances he made before he got hurt, and he's not ever been that great in his career anyways. Why can't he just go to NO?

2)If they really have to activate him onto the bigleague roster, then it's a nobrainer to me…dump Sosa. You can't punish Smith, just because he has options. He's actually been one of the few reliable ones (his last outing aside). Sosa, on the other hand, is the king of the grandslam.

  166. Gil in Savannah, GA

ed: I hope you're just kidding. Where would you play Rowand? And if you're the Giants and currently wasting $126M on Barry Zito, why would you take on Delgado's contract? Knowing that Scott Boras is Ollie's agent, why rent him for the rest of the year to lose him at the end? Heilman? Well, he's just Heilman.

  167. Gil in Savannah, GA

RMK: Matt Wise had a very strong spring training and was a good middle reliever in Milwaukee. Could he do any worse than Heilman?
And you're right, Smith should stay, despite his maddening tendency to implode after getting the first two men out as he did yesterday.
I'd send Heilman down to work out his problems, sign Trunbow and send him to New Orleans and I'd DFA Sosa and deal him to Detroit for Brandon Inge.

  168. HellofromDC

My oh my,,, look at all the posts The big metsie must be losin and the little metsies are spilling out their venom…. Who you all hatin tonite?

  169. HellofromDC

Where's Tiffany? She's the best little metsie in the whole world!

  170. HellofromDC

I bet the Wilpons are happy since their favorite team is winning….. The Wilpons love the Dodgers so much they are going to make the big metsies play in Ebbets Field…..

  171. Tim in Lavallette

After another poor start from Perez, do you think management will look to possibly putting Ollie in the bullpen if and when Pedro or Old Man Duque make a return?

  172. HellofromDC

You guys think we suck so bad but now we only be 3 little games behind you. I guess you suck almost as much as we do…..

  173. Gil in Savannah, GA

    'Night everybody.
Time to flip over to Charles Barkley for Inside the NBA.
Come back from the ledge and don't lose heart—or hope.
    Peace-out.

  174. Steve (The Original)

I HATE it when I have to agree with Hello from DC. Kudos to Manny Acta for keeping that team hovering around .500

  175. HellofromDC

Oh steve the orginal…. I love you too… and cudos to Omar for spending all that money on a team that barely stays ahead of the Nats…......
and to little Gil stuck in Georgia where its going to get real hot and buggy soon, I can't wait for Wise either. That 80 mph slow ball even I could hit….yummy yummy…..

  176. Steve (The Original)

    Yep, it's pretty pathetic.

  177. HellofromDC

Hey guys, I just have to admit to you all that my posts are so poeth! The natsies rule and even though no one comes to watch their games at least they have me as a fan!

  178. Keith

    Yep, it's May 6th.

  179. Steve (The Original)

DC: Is Acta really a good manager? Or is he just good at handling the youngsters? Would he work for a veteran team? Try not to be a wiseass and let's see your baseball knowledge in actual action! ;-)

  180. HellofromDC

    Ok Mr Original A challenge.
    Manny Acta weaknesses….
    1. He is not any better than any other manager like the one you all love to hate in game situations. I think he gets out maneuvered by most others in close late game situations.
    2. I think he pulls starters rather quickly but he may feel he has to because we are a little anemic on the offensive end of things.

    Manny Acta good points.

    1. Most importantly he doesn't take crap or lazy play. The GM loves Milledge, he benched him for being late.
    2. He benched Belliard after they gave him a multi year deal for not performing.
    3. His guys in the pen know their jobs. When the closer went down with whatever the 8th inning guy Rauch moved to the 9th and everyone moved up a notch.
    4. I never heard him bitch about a guy after 5.2 scoreles innings.
    5. I think these guys respect him and play over their heads for him. Nine game losing streak right off the bat and there were no signs of panic. They've played winning ball since then.
Would he work for a veteran team?
    1. Yes, but only if a GM would back him up if he went with a kid over a veteran. Oh wait, no problem, minaya purged your system of youth pretty much.

All right Mr original its more fun to pick on the bad little metsies but you are now an officially good one with clm dave Tiffany and of course our host Mr Delcos who apparently is going to have a very sick stomach some day from eating too much pizza…..

PS: The imitator, whom I presume is either metsfan or JK the suit guy did a very poor job…..

  181. HellofromDC

I heart Manny Acta! You little metsies should be sorry for letting such a pretty little thing go.

PS: I love my team that finishes in last every year! I'm the only one in the stands!

  182. HellofromDC

Sometimes I feel like a nut,
    Sometimes I don’t,
    New York Mets got fans,
    Nats don’t.

Sorry, metsies. Just thinking to myself.

  183. HellofromDC/PelhamPkwy

Can you believe it Delcos, all the little Metsies are trying to make fun of me…. Don't you think that's pathetic since their team is supposed to be so good and perfect and my team is suppoised to be so bad, but they just can't stand it when anyone other than the Yankees, who they KNOW to be superior to themselves treats them forthe laughingstock that they are because they can never be # 1` in NY. Their own owner hates them and is trying to turn them into his beloved Dodgers. That's why he's making them move to Ebbets Field next year. Becuase even Wilpon hats the metsies…

You little metsies are just like the big metsies. Rollins is in their head and I'm in your head…. Pathetic except for dave and Mr orginal and clm and TIFFANY and of course Delcos who has to put up with all the arrogant and "superior" elitists that call themselves little metsie fans…...

Keep it comin chicken little metsies…. Can't fight under your own identity because they're gonna change your name to the NYchickens because obviously you little metsies can't stand up under your own ID (which you probably forgot is fake anyway)... Maybe I'll start bringing my friends to play with you soon.
