Pre-game notebook: Randolph talks to Wagner

May
2

-Manager Willie Randolph didn’t say what Billy Wagner said about Oliver Perez was wrong, but said he wished he would have not taken it to the press. Randolph didn’t exactly tell Wagner to tone it down in the future, but maybe think first. Said Wagner: “It’s been taken care of.’’ Also, when asked the bigger issue, Wagner speaking out or Perez’s pitching, Randolph said it was the latter.wagner-billy.jpg

-No news yet on the roster move they’ll make to clear a spot for Moises Alou. Brian Schneider is still a couple of days away, so I might consider putting him on the DL instead of optioning Gustavo Molina.

-Randolph said moving Ryan Church up second in the order is tied in to Alou’s return because it lends more balance to the line-up.

IMO…Wagner has said nothing wrong. He has earned the right as a veteran pitcher to be vocal towards a young pitcher that needs some guidance. It seemed Perez was fine with the comments and knows they were true. I see Wagner trying to help, they are on the same team trying to win. Willie needs to shut up and do nothing…He is good at that. Perez is still learning and has the talent and it can be frustrating watching him pitch at times. Kind of like Pelfrey…Awesome at times but awful at other times.

Willie is 100% wrong. Wagner said what had to be said and he had every right to do so. How the starters do in the game directly correlates to how the bullpen will be used. Yes the offensive has a lot to do with it as well but a starter who does not even put up a fight is worth criticizing.

I find it hard to believe that any Mets fan had a problem with what Wagner said that night. I also think that most fans want to hear it more often if they perform the way they did in with Bucs.

If Willie is not going to criticize his players then someone else should. That someone else should be a person who has experience and can back his own work up.

Day by day I continue to question whether Willie can handle his job. Its a good thing it is not up to me.

“I wouldn’t go that route, but that’s Billy,” Randolph said. “Billy gets a little emotional at times. If he feels that way, it’s fine. Billy doesn’t speak for the team. That’s just him. That’s just his opinion.”

It is me or am I the only one is pretty tick off how this is just another example of how dismissive Willie is toward his teammates?
