Agreed, Mike. He can make a big difference, both with his own bat and by protecting Beltran, who I refer to as "The Good Carlos."

It's stupid and a fantasy to think otherwise, but just imagine IF he Alou could have one more year in that body of health for the rest of the season.

The lineup would really be improved, and IMO, allow this team to start to seperate itself despite its other warts.

This is why JD is a writer and not a doctor. But he is right that Alou could be back to the DL just as quick as he left it. Thing is, this team is desperate for his bat, so however long he can out there, it will help.

Duque will never pitch another game for the Mets. I am 50-50 on Pedro ever pitching another game. At this point starting pitching is not the biggest problem. Getting Pedro back is a bonus.

Everyone talks about Alou being brittle.
The funny thing is last winter people actually thought
Castro could be the Mets starting catcher. At this point
I wonder if he will ever play another game for this team.

If the Mets can tread water till mid June a lot of talent will be available. That may just cost picking up over priced contracts.

From Adam Rubin's blog:

April 29, 2008
Alou: No fracture, will return Friday in Arizona

The Mets will have a press conference with Moises Alou later this afternoon. The early buzz is that he may be back this weekend in Arizona, but that hasn’t been confirmed. Stay tuned …

UPDATE: Can’t be too bad with Alou. He’s working out with the team today. “He looks good,” Willie Randolph said. “It’s good to see him.”

UPDATE: Moises Alou said he’ll be ready to be activated Friday in Arizona. He said there’s no fracture of his right ankle.

I'm going to bet the under...say Friday in Arizona. I'll even bet that Alou is working out with the Mets as we speak with Willie Randolph saying, "He looks good, and it's great to have him back!!!" Just a hunch... ;-)

The Pirates GM has already gone on record stating any trades he makes he wants back young pitching. I say forget the pirates and Nady. I do not want Omar trading anymore young pitchers in our farm system. It's to early in the season to think about any trades anyway.

Joe,

Very optimistic w/ your injury prognoses. Can't say I agree, but this blog could use some optimism. But the Bucs will not trade Nady for Sosa, unless David Wright is included in the deal. You can always dump a player on someone (witness Mota), but you're not getting back premium talent in return for a career failure like Jorge Sosa.

Sosa and Wise do not get you Nady...

And isn't it a bit early to say what it will take for the Mets to get to the playoffs? Also, it's ridiculous, or downright retarded to say the only chance they have to make the playoffs is if other teams get injured..

As for Alou, I'll have to say over... The dude is way too brittle...

I wouldnt hold my breath with Alou. We just need to play with whom we have, unless omar has a trick or 3 up his sleeve.
Otherwise, we need a new 1st baseman. and an extra catcher..
oh and the pitchers need to practice going the distance like the old days.

Pedro back in late May. Schnieder will join the team in Arizona. Alu - betting that the ankel swelling is not a fracture - will be back for the next home stand.

Tougher questions:

1) When Wise is ready, who does he replace in the BP?
2) When Pedro is ready, who does he replace in the SP?
3) IF Duque is ever ready again, what happens with him?
My thoughts... Pedro replaces Figueroa, and Figueroa replaces Sosa. Wise / Muniz wait in the minors for trouble with Smith or Heilman. Sosa and Wise traded for Nady. Can't trade any SPs because big contingency is needed with injury prone guys on roster.

Scoopcoop,

You made a very good point. Whatever confidence I have that the Mets are a playoff team - and it's not a lot as of this moment - stems from the injury/performance problems that have or may in the future beset the Phils and Braves. I certainly do NOT hope that another person gets hurt, but if Smoltz and/or Chipper start missing time, or Hamels or Lidge goes down, it may be the only thing that gets the Mets over the hump. It's not a good feeling to have to rely on other teams' failures, but that is where we are I feel.

Over. I've become very pessimistic about Alou's ability to stay healthy. If his ankle is not seriously injured it will be something else.

If it takes until August for Alou to come back, the Mets best chance for playoffs is for the Phils SP and the Braves SP and Bp to be as bad as they have been so far.
