On Tap Today: Medical news coming.

We should have something more on Moises Alou and Brian Schneider later this afternoon. Nothing yet, say the Mets. The timing of the Alou mess couldn’t have come at a better time. If the team knows it won’t have him for another month or so, it is far better to know that now than later.
Johan Santana to pitch through the raindrops tonight.
BTW: In response to a caller to the office: Shawn Green never officially retired. He’s technically still a free agent.
Stay tuned for medical news.

It is good to know about Alou sooner rather than later in the season, but I'm not sure it changes anything. Maybe I am wrong, but I don't see Omar emptying the farm for Xavier Nady, or someone like him. That said, they might be able to get someone on the cheap (which Nady will not be) who is better than Pagan. Angel has zero pop in his bat, his average is an aberration, and this lineup needs someone who can belt a HR once in a while. I'm very unconvinced by Delgado, despite his nice day.
JM, read Klapisch in the Bergen Record. He believes Omar and Willie are on the chopping block if the team is .500 by the end of May.
If you believe him (which I don't necessarily b/c he is a Yanks fan), then Omar may trade to get a Nady and dry up the farm to the Sahara desert (not that it is not far from being the Sahara already).
I read Klapisch, and he may be right that they're on the block, but I still don't see it happening. IF the Pirates want to trade him, there will be many offers b/c he is one of the only bats out there, and I still don't think the Mets will give up the farm for a guy like him.
What Klapisch stated doesn't surprise me because I posted the other day on this blog that if Willie goes Omar should go with him because Omar is the one who built this team. Omar stated when he came here how he was going to develop a farm system. Where is this farm system, if Willie goes, Omar should go. I don't see the Wilpon's doing this though, I can see the Wilpon's firing Willie first and than if things don't change than I can see them firing Omar.
Will they wait to call tonight's game until after fans have arrived? Seems like a good, rare opportunity to announce the inevitable.
tomg,
The farm system is in Minnesota. Would you rather have them back? You can't complain about not having a farm w/ Santana here. It's true, Omar's made some bad moves w/ young players – I don't count the Delgado trade – but the real issue is the draft and how much the Mets are willing to pay top picks. If you stay within the slotting system, you get burned.
JM: My impression is that the slotting system is not the real issue. That's just an excuse given by various parties for a poor farm system. Can you or anyone else give an example where the Mets were "burned" by "staying within the slotting system?"
The real issue I believe is poor drafting by the Mets in recent years.
On the injury update front, what is also going on with Castro and El Duque. I would like to see the Mets not have to carry three catchers, unless one can play first. I am also wondering if El Duque is already written off until the second half, or, for the year…..He has really been a good investment this year so far??? The other thought I have is the Mets are fortunate in one respect. The fact that Glavine did not accept his option. That would have been yet another high priced player on the DL.
also – whatever happened to Jose Valentin's injury? I must've missed that one. Did he just retire?
The fact that the "farm sys" is in Minn speaks for itself. If all you have in the farm sys is 4 guys, who no one says are a lock o be a ML let alone an AS, then you don't have a farm system.
The scenario of Willie going first followed by Omar later would not be surprising given past mets history and that Omar is buddy-buddy w/jeff and fred.
Slotting has only exasperated an already poor drafting capability of the Mets FO.
JM,
those players the Mets traded for Santana aren't anything special. The only reason why they traded with the mets was because there were no other team out there. The yankees and the red sox weren't as interested as the media made them out to be so the twins had no other choice but to trade him the the mets.
John I don't think this game is getting in. I was taking a tour of Yankee stadium today
don't ask, and it's been raining heavy all day. I really, really doubt they're going to get this one in.I never said they were special, but they were our guys w/ the most upside, and we don't know whether they will be stars or not. But here is an example of the Mets sticking to the slotting system, w/ Pedro Beato.

"those players the Mets traded for Santana aren't anything special. "
I guess Baseball America lies when they rank the top prospects in baseball then… Only 2 of them in the top 100. I guess you have better info then they have eh?
And I guess all of our guys are super prospects even tho only one is rated top 100 eh?
Watch McClouth tonight. Fine young player.
To Tomg: I don't see Willie and Omar being on the block if Mets aren't .500 by the end of May. I agree about your take on Santana trade. That Mets didn't include F-Mart and Pelfrey indicates Yanks and Sox weren't players at the time. Personally, I think Twins might have taken less.-JD
On injuries…..how is Pedro enjoying the Florida sun???? Do we have a shot of seeing him before June????
Stillsane: Castro played yesterday at St. Lucie, so hopefully he is coming back. On another note having nothing to do with the Mets, Hanley Ramirez is the best hitting shortstop if not one of the best hitters in all of baseball.
Thanks Steve.
JM: I've heard the Beato name mentioned before. But he was a 17th round pick. Does anyone seriously think our farm system was harmed by not being able to sign a 17th round pick in 2005? One who is currently graded only a B- prospect by some?
Are there are any other instances or is Beato it for instances of being "burned" by slotting? If he's it, I can hardly see the case for a slotting issue. Seems more to me that talent evaluation needs to improve.
Stillsane: I don't think we'll see Pedro before June. We might not see him until July.-JD
I love this place… nowhere else in america do so few argue about so many meaningless things. I love you little metsies, I don't know why since you are such an awnry bunch, but what the heck…. well, I guess I do know why, you all wish you were me and loved the game and had fun, something you little metsies forgot over the years. !!!! Thanks to clm for having fun with me… Maybe someday the rest of the little metsies will have fun too!!!!! What I love best is now you little metsies are fighting about farms and ranking ball players just like maple syrup.. Very imaginative little metsies…...much more imaginative than fighting about whether Willie or the worst GM in the world will go first…...
Thanks John. The note about Shawn Green was interesting. Next thing you know, Omar will be looking up Julio Franco's number!
sloppy,
"I guess Baseball America lies when they rank the top prospects in baseball then… Only 2 of them in the top 100. I guess you have better info then they have eh?"
exactly, only two and they were in the middle to end of the top 100, big deal. When they were talking about those players to the twins, there were talks that the twins didn't even have high regards for those prospects. Neither did other organizations scouts. The point being is Omar and his scouts aren't doing a good job so far. It depends how long met fans want to give him and his scouts to build a good farm system. We are still waiting!!!
JD,
I never said that the mets were going to fire Willie and Omar by May if the mets were at .500, that was Klapisch. My point was that if there going to get rid of Willie than Omar should go also. That was what I was saying.
I just heard on the wfan that the met game was canceled tonight. The Mets will make up the game August 11th, it will be a day game.
any word on the game being canceled or not? it is POURING!
sorry didn't see the comment above!
NYMetsGrrl94,
check my post above yours!!!
sloppy,
You don't have to look far in our division to see a team who knows how to draft. The Atlanta braves, McCann, Escobar, Johnson, Francoeur, Diaz, to name a few. They have a good farm system and there GM and scouts know how to draft.
DC: Maybe you should start worrying about the underachieving Ryan Zimmermann and lazy Lastings Milledge instead about what the Met fans think.
What is wrong with the weather? It is cold and grey like the fans?
The Braves did not draft Diaz he was drafted by the Rays.
Traded to the Royals and then the Braves.
Also his splits are terrible, mashs lefty's but is below average against righty's and is now being platooned by the Braves.
Diaz also plays terrible defense.
He is a little better than Pagan, not a game changer.
Scott from Pelham,
Take it easy there fellow, my mistake that diaz wasn't drafted by the Braves. That just shows how well the braves draft, diaz wasn't drafted by them, that's why is is average. My point is how well the Braves draft, not Matt Diaz.
Steve the original who isn't very…...your post shows exactly how "despicable" little metsies like you really are. You see outside of the miserable and very unhappy metsie world we don't worry about a player being in a slump nor do we worry about the guy you gave us who by the way isn't lazy and you show your very lack of knoledge about anything when you say it. We have fun and picking on you grumpy and very unhappy metsie fans is fun. Even the Philthy fans are more a fun bunch than you metsies…..
so unoriginal how much money do you waste to go to a metsie game and be miserable????? I bet it makes you even more miserable when i ask you this most important of questions because it hits too close to home, doesn't it???
Love and kisses from all of us who wish they were me and some of whom are me….
Boo the mets boo the mets…. Carlos Delgado rules for putting it to the little metsies!!!!!!
Shawn Green?
Good Lord, these people. Two years of holding Milledge back and doing nothing out of this guy and people STILL want him back?
Because he was able to hit dingers basically a decade ago?
I mean, it boggles the mind.
Is there no washed-up power hitter that people won't assume to be instantly made ten years younger by a New York uniform?
DC: It's hard to face reality isn't it? How was it watching the Nationals last Sunday giving up 2 runs on a wild pitch? Your team gets a new park and does the unthinkable…it doesn't even sell out!!! And not to mention how thankful you need to be to NY since your best pitcher comes from here. Now go be a good little boy and head on back to Gnational land where you came from.
Steve the very unoriginal: I am so happy to be around DC and away from the stench that "despicable" little metsies like you give out all the time, I am so happy to be away from the "despicable" booing from fans like you, I am so happy to be away from the dirty little parking lot that is all the metsies have to call home, I am so happy to be away from pathetic so called fans like you who just don't know how to have a good time that I really don't care what my team does. If other people don't go to a game, I'm supposed to care? Its good, it leaves more good seats for me to pick. By the way, mr very unoriginal how did the metsies do in thbeir first year in the great Shea Stadium.. Sell out did they??? Hardly They didn't even get close to 2 million little metsies in the big NYC The only had 1,732,597 attendance genius. Boy is that a lot to brag about Mr unoriginal.. I'd rather have people stay home than go to a game and be an embarrasmnet to my team, my city my sport like you little metsies are…...
You think we are so bad, well the only thing you want is a champinoship isn't it. How many do you have since we've been in DC? NONE. How many you have this Century NONE… Enjoy another season of humiliating your team the boosies of the Queens parking lot….
I hope you good metsies get away from the stench of all the mean little metsie. Love and kisses W
CD: You are actually going to compare a stadium opening in 1964 to a stadium opening now? You are a funny funny man! Gee, how much do you want to wager that when Citifield opens up it will be sold out just about every game? And I guarantee you, the Mets are alot more closer to a WS championship then the Senat…oh sorry, the Gnationals are. Oh yeah, did Elijah Dukes stalk anyone yet or get arrested for any other crimes? Just checking…. Just deal with the fact that the Gnats will NEVER be a championship team and never have a chance to even sniff one. Must be alot of fun to root for that kind of team!
