All about the Mets

Greetings from DC

April
23

Sitting in the press box at the new Nationals Stadium. Looking threw a spiderweb crack on one of the indestructible plex-glass windows which broke on opening night and takes three months to repair. Perhaps the Mets’ offense will be repaired before then.

There’s a stunning view of the Capitol framed between a bank of lights and a building under construction.

Carlos Delgado was out taking early BP.

We really are high up here. One of my DC friends said he “hadn’t been this high since the 60s.”

Johan Santana pitching for the boys tonight. The best pitcher on the planet? Not so far.

John, I'll give you a "shout" tonight during BP if you're standing near the dugout.

hey Delcos, just wondering if you've ever taken a look at Johan's stats from his cy young seasons during April. That'll tell you what you need to know about how Johan doesn't have the best April's. Even so, I don't even really know what you're trying to accomplish by that statement. Has he pitched the best of any pitcher so far this year? No, but what does that really mean? How much is that really worth? Oh wow, i'm the best pitcher in April! Yeah! John is fine, he showed he gets up for the big games by fooling with Philly for 7 innings. Give him some time to build up the arm strength, and as years past have shown, he starts going deep later in the year, which i'd say is worth a hell of a lot more then in April. But you're right about one thing, the Mets offense has taken a 2-3 game vacation. 2 games? Unacceptable…

  3. Franco

Why take a shot at Santana? totally not needed

  4. JM

    JD,

I love your objectivity, but like Franco said, it's simply not the time or place to take a shot at Johan. The Mets have been atrocious the last 3 games, but Santana hasn't been in any of them. In his last start, he sure as heck did look like the second coming, and in 3 of 4 starts he has pitched like an ace. It's not a question of being a homer or not, but your criticisms need to be credible. If you are simply implying that we haven't seen the best of him, that is probably true, but there are ways to say that without making it sound like the Mets Zito-ed themselves. Please, fire away at Delgado, Sosa, Castillo, Beltran, Heilman, etc. You need to be harsher on some players, actually.

John loves to take his shots.

    This is nothing new.

Real professional. I hope the next time you ask Johan a question he ignores you.

We wonder where the fans get off booing Johan. It's from reading comments like these from the media. The lemmings just follow along.

  6. metsfan

maybe Delcos is still smarting from when Johan had a problem with some question he asked him. C'mon john, i thought objectivity was your thing…?

    • ... The best pitcher on the planet? Not so far.

That's OK. So far = small sample size. The NL seems to be pitching rich this year with Haren having come over and the maturation of some others like Hamels. So Santana may not even end up being the best starter in the NL this year. If that happened,I still would love the trade. We got him to be ace-like. To go 6-8 innings almost every start. And so far he hasn't disappointed.

  8. DelcosEatsBabies

Delcos gets paid by the comment, it's actually quite ingenious. So he feigns ignorance, makes idiotic comments, users flow to the blog to point out how stupid Delcos is, then sits back and profits.

    The man's a genius.

  9. sloppy

Is the press box on the roof?

  10. JM

    JD,

I have the utmost respect for your work, but can we agree that the user name "DelcosEatsBabies" is just a little funny, if only for the fact this is just baseball after all.

  11. Jimmy dean

Wow, if that really is the case that Delcos gets paid by the comment, then that really sux and I will never comment again. So here's your last $1.50 from jimmy dean Delcos. Oh and yes, Johan is the best pitcher on the PLANET, he will show you why tonight!!!

  12. runnin rebel

I agree with John ..Not the best pitcher in baseball right now. I am willing to bet Johan does not think so either. Peavy, Webb and Danny boy are in the way of that.

Indestructable glass? Cracked you don't say? Must not have been UL tested. Who's to blame? The architect? Contractor/ Installer? Manufacturer? That's drama.

  13. Scott from Pelham

Why is everyone so worked up over JD's comment.
Did he say something that was not true.
So far Johan is not the best pitcher on the planet.
    It's April chill a little.

  14. John Delcos

To JM: A little funny? I am still laughing. BTW: I get the same whether I post twice a day or ten times. I post more than most and respond more than most. I think that says something.-JD

  15. sloppy

Most of these press sites have a comment every three days. This blog is the best. Keep stirring the pot Delcos. Met fans very angry after three baddies in a row. Stir the pot…... Maybe somehow it will rub off on the sleeping horde known as the 2007/8 New York Mets.

    130 games of mediocrity…. Don't worry…its early…..

  16. Keith

Delcos, you're the man. It is incredible how you play puppet master on this blog.

If we go by stats, Cliff Lee is the best pitcher on the planet at this very second. Anyone want to argue Cliff Lee is better than Johan? I didn't think so.

Watching Johan pitch is an absolute pleasure. He barely breaks a sweat, and only when he has to.
