Today’s pitcher: Oliver Perez

Talked to a scout about Oliver Perez. Asked him if he thought if CC Sabathia continued to get ripped that Perez might become the top dog in the free agent market next winter.

“No,’’ he said. “He’s still Oliver Perez. He’s never going to me more than a No. 3 pitcher.’’
There’s no denying his stuff, but there’s also no disputing his reputation for being inconsistent.
Perez is 1-3 with a 4.28 ERA lifetime against Philadelphia.

You just never know with Ollie. Could make Sandy Koufax jealous, could channel Mark Redman.
I realize that Perez is somewhat erratic but… he’s on more than he’s off and… more and more as he grows into his career.
Dude was the #2 starter by rights on Opening Day, Pedro was only the #2 for his ego and out of seniority.
How Ollie keeps getting killed for being erratic when a guy TWICE as mind-bendingly inconsistent, John Maine, is in the same team’s rotation… I’ll never know.
At least Ollie melts down after an error or a bad call or something… Maine’s just cruising for five innings and his mind falls out of gear, he forgets he’s playing in a major league ballgame and… back-to-back home runs by the 7 & 8 hitters, out of the wild blue nowhere.
It’s not hating on Maine… he’s a great #4 option but… if you wanna talk about a pitcher on the Mets whose mindset won’t keep up with his stuff, it ain’t Ollie.
At least Ollie melts down for… reasons.
Being a # 3 on the free agent market ain’t a bad place to be, is it?
JM: There is not a pitcher anywhere who is going to make Sandy Koufax jealous.
I should stay away. Was gone a few days and the Mets win win win, if they lose today metsfan will call me a jinx and say bad things about me like he does to you Delcos!
yeah, sloppy, that was metaphorical.
If Oliver Perez wins 15 again, he’ll be worth $14 million a year on the market. How often does a lefty under 30 with back to back 15 win seasons hit the market? This year there might be two.
Ollie is no ace and certainly not on a level with Bedard. But calling his ceiling a #3 might be selling him a little short. The fact that he’s proven he can be a big game pitcher somewhat mitigates his maddening inconsistency and untimely meltdowns.
If Ollie and Boras insist on every last penny, then Ollie most likely won’t be a Met next year. Since he’s a high maintenance starter in terms of coaching, it’s to his benefit to stay with the Mets and The Jacket. If he leaves, I can easily see him regressing without the constant attention heaped on him by Peterson.
The early success of Pelfrey and Figueroa and Niese’s continued excellence make next year’s uncertainties regarding Ollie and Pedro less of a concern. I can easily see the Mets offering Figueroa a contract for next year if he continues to pitch like he’s been doing.
I agree with JK.
Ollie is a nice pitcher but has always been inconsistent. The coach is always reminding him to stay within himself.
I remember last year he started getting wild cause he was pitching well and just wanted to change his arm angle to see what happened. It didn’t work and he was coached back to where he should be.
To Mike C’s comments regarding Maine. Maine and Ollie are two different pitchers emotionally. Maine tries to keep it level, Ollie is out in the open. It turns out Maine was hurt last year but we didn’t hear about it. It was also his first full year in the majors. Ollie has been here before. Not quite the same.
It is in our interests to resign him, somehow I don’t think that will happen and we will have a top 3 of Johan, Maine, Big Pelf.
It is looking more and more like the senior citizens will have a hard time pitching this year let alone next.
Mike C, how do you determine inconsistency or consistency?
Maine and OP had almost the same ratio of good (6inn/3 run) starts as bad last yr. It was about 1:1.
I’d say they have the same inconsistency.
