Pregame: Mets vs. Nats, Game 3

April
17

Hey everyone this is Josh Thomson subbing in for John. Here is tonight’s lineup:

SS Reyes
RF Church
3B Wright
1B Delgado
LF Pagan
CF Clark
2B Castillo
C Cassanova
P Figueroa

Pregame chatter: Carlos Beltran is out with a sore neck/shoulder. Brian Schneider is just taking a day off. … Beltran’s left shoulder has felt stiff where it meets his neck since he woke up yesterday. He felt better by the time he came to the park, but it hadn’t gotten better by today. He’s had trouble turning his head to his left, making it difficult to hit right-handed. Rather than push it, Willie Randolph decided to give Beltran the day off against Nats LHP John Lannan. I asked Beltran about his availability to pinch hit and he said he’d be able to go lefty for sure. As for righty:  “Later on we’ll go to the cage and try to move around,” he said. “If I feel like I get better and they need to use me in the game, I’ll be available.” … Randolph said he didn’t know the Carloses had spoken to Jose Reyes, but he was all for it. “We haven’t hit too many home runs this year so we haven’t gotten a chance to see it,” the manager said. “If we could hit a few more and we can jump around a little bit, I’d like that. You have to enjoy it, have fun man. You really have to.” … Don’t read into Raul Casanova catching Nelson Figueroa for the second straight game. This is no Randy Johnson or Greg Maddux situation. “It’s just the way it worked out really,” Randolph said. “I wasn’t thinking about trying to pair ‘em up. I’m sure Figgy’s going to get a couple starts — he could go even longer than that depending on when the other guys are ready — but he’s not going to be here for an extended period of time so we’re not going to get into personal catchers. It’s just the way it happened to work out.”

Beltran isn’t used to talking this much. He hurt his neck helping Reyes.

  2. Josh

Sucks that Beltran is out of the lineup tonight, but I’m fine with it as long as he can play tomorrow night…

  3. Azy

Pagan should be playing center and Clark should be in left.

    Azy:
    He is?

welcome to the lineup brady clark

  6. Mike C.

    Clark’s in centre?

  7. Andrew Vazzano [TheRopolitans.com]

I’ve seen it both ways…I’m not sure.

  8. Donn

    Wow, that’s a pretty anemic 5-9 vs a lefty.

    “Wow, that’s a pretty anemic 5-9 vs a lefty.”

On second thought, that’s a pretty anemic 4-9 vs a lefty.

    anemic 1-9 anyone? jeez.

The Mets are 5-1 against lefties, and I don’t think Beltran and Schneider are doing all the work.

The bottom half of the Mets line up has done nothing for the last two games yet they have won both, so as long as the top 3 can produce, we have a good shot, Wright is not going to get anything to hit though.

Andrew: Beltran has 6 doubles, 6 walks, and a home run in 22 plate appearances versus lefties so far (compiling .438/.591/1.000/1.591 numbers). He and Wright are the principle reasons why the Mets are 5-1 versus lefties so far (with some surprising help from Church in this area). Take him out of the lineup, and that record versus lefties looks different.

I’m not bashing Willie, as I recognize that his hands are pretty much tied due to injuries. I’m just stating an observation on tonight’s lineup.

    Alright. Good point.

Yeah, there’s really nothing he can do here, so I don’t think we can complain.

  14. Josh Thomson

Sorry folks. Clark is in LF and Pagan in CF, as you expected. That was a mistake on my part.
