Josh: Probably because our (the fans) expectations are much higher. And as long as they continue to play like the last half of 2007 Mets, there is going to be pessimism.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but the Phillies have lost series both to the Nats and Mets, and are a game under .500, yet I don't see nearly as much pessimism over on their side as I do over here.

In any case, we have to take 2/3 at least from the Nats because they just are not a good team...

Steve (The Original),

I don't think you are asking a lot either, but as you and I both know, this team has failed time and again to win games that it should win. Just b/c you aren't asking a lot doesn't mean the Mets will be able to do what you are asking. It wasn't much to ask to beat the Phils 1 time out of 7 down the stretch last season either, but they couldn't do it. It wasn't much to ask to play .500 ball against the also rans of the division in September, but they couldn't do it. At this point, any sign - let alone a sweep - that they are heading in the right direction would make me feel better than I do right now.

JM: I don't think i'm asking alot. The Nationals are a team that if the Mets are as good as they "think" they are, should sweep. They should feel nothing but the same way.

It would be a really really good thing for the Mets if they sweep. I don't think winning 2 of 3 is good enough. Just for the fact of how bad the Nats have been doing, and revenge for what the Nats did to the Mets at the end of 07, the Mets need to sweep this series.

Pitching, defense, and smart play. That is what wins and loses games. They may never hit great in the clutch, but it's Wright throwing the ball into the dugout, Delgado throwing it at Chase Utley's back, Perez blowing a 4-run lead, and Brady Clark getting thrown out at home when he never should have gone that loses games. The Mets scored enough runs last year to win the division. It was everything else that they didn't do enough of.

Just to back up the point I made earlier, I combined the stats of Church, Pagan and Schneider vs. Wright, Delgado and Beltran thus far. I excluded Reyes and Castillo because of the games missed. Here's what you get:

Church, Pagan, Schneider:
.326 avg.
.416 obp.
24 RBI

Delgado, Wright, Beltran:
.278 avg.
.398 obp.
18 RBI

We obviously know the capabilities of that latter three, but let's be honest here, this is THEIR team, and they need to take control. If you're going to blow smoke all winter and tell me you're over September, then start playing like it. Can Willie start acting like he wants to be there, too? In mid-March, I really didn't expect to be this upset just a dozen games into the season.

On Jackie Robinson nite it would be befitting that the Mets play a clean, crisp, hard-nosed game.

On the other hand, if they play like Sunday maybe Jackie will turn in his grave in disgust.

The Nats are not very good, but they handed it to us last year. If the Mets do not sweep or take 2 of 3, there will be riots. As there should be.

Until Willie is gone, this team is doomed to repeat the same failures of last year (horrible bullpen usage, no killer instict, total complacency, etc.)

As Willie says this is the test in front of them. They should sweep. If the Mets are the team they say they are they should stomp all over these guys.

If they lose the series the fans have a right to be worried.

We also should have beaten these guys down the stretch in 1998 when we were going for the wild card. And didn't. Is Duaner Sanchez going to pitch in this series?
