On Tap Today

April
14

Sitting at the dentist’s office. Fitting, because watching the Mets has been as much fun the past two days.

It was as if they fell out of the ugly tree this weekend and hit every branch on the way down.

I don’t want to hear anymore “we’re better than this.”

Prove it then. Time for me to rinse and spit.

    I despise that place.

The dentist office is the worst place on the planet.

  2. sloppy

I agree about the dentist office and the I don't want to hear WE're better than this

I also don't ever want to hear "We'll be all right".

  3. JM

    JD,

You're playing right into their excuses! They did not fall out of the ugly tree "this weekend," they fell out LAST summer and haven't stopped falling. The players act like these types of games are an aberration, but they're NOT!!! This is how they play on an average day.

  4. John Delcos

To JM: You must not have read me the past few days. I have been on them.-JD

  5. scoopcoop

Tomrrow will be a good test if they (players) are as upset as DW stated in the quotes. A bad team coming off a win after a 9 game losing streak, on the road, ought to be an easy one to pick off.

  6. scoopcoop

another quote from DW, "The best way to describe it," David Wright said, "is just sloppy."

I think your blog name could be used alot if they don't Wright the ship…..Sloppy

  7. ghost of bad Met trades

Just remember scoopcoop that this same bad team kicked our butt in September, and Acta had them playing hard even though they were long gone from a pennant race. I haven't seen them this year but I suspect Acta has them playing hard again despite their record.

  8. scoopcoop

They might be playing hard, but they have not played well enough to win. And since everyone is on the bandwagon right now that emotions are controlling the outcome of the games winner and loser, I'm suggesting that if the Mets are truely angry and the Nats are exhaling b/c of winning a game after losing 9, The Mets ought to kick their butt tomorrow.

Let's see what happens. A buddy and I work out the whole yr's schedule with wins and losses. We had them going 5-4 on this homestand after going 3-3 on the road (2-3 as it turned out b/c of the rain). So despite my frustration (and alot of others), I'm not that surprised with their record.

A 90 win team (as I still believe they are) has alot of flaws. We are seeing that right now. But youv'e got to beat up on the lesser teams at home.

And let's remember, Braves just had Glavine go out w/a hammy. Hampton is out and Smoltz could go at any time.

And even though Moyer and Eaton mezmorize the Mets, they stink.

I'm keeping the faith (but w/baited breath).

    Re dental work—
Always get the nitrous oxide (laughing gas). You'll still know what's going on, but you won't care.

Could sure use it for Mets games ….

  10. JM

Honestly, the only thing that has me keeping the faith is how flawed the Phils and Braves are, as scoopcoop points out. But that is a bad thing to be counting on mediocrity from other teams when you're own team has enough talent to win on its own merit. And even if the Mets do win this division, does anyone think they can make a championship run? The playoffs alone are not good enough, not after 2006, not after all the money sunk into payroll, not after the increased cost of seats . . . This team needs to start playing like they at least believe they can be champions.

  11. Scott from Pelham

I know it is way to early for this but if Willie were to be replaced who exactly is available ?
I am sure Omar has A list even if he never could admit it.

  12. scoopcoop

JM, once you get to playoffs anything can happen and anyone can win (STL, NY Football Giants).

Santana, maybe Pedro and a Maine/OP would match up pretty well. It then comes down to whomever gets that timely hit.

But, they have to play better. A nice, crisp win tomorrow would be good.

  13. dave

we are supposed to beat this team.

    let's see if we do.

  14. JM

    Scoopcoop,

The problem w/ Maine and OP is that they seem as likely to go 4 as they are to go 8. I guess the silver lining is that they some big-game playoff success. But you are completely correct, once you make it to the dance, anything can happen. I still have faith we can get there.

  15. scoopcoop

Maine/OP not going 8? Like Suppan who killed Mets in 06 not going 8 yesterday? You never know.

  16. sloppy

Scott from Pelham: Who is available if Willie is axed. Its obvious, everyone who posts here is available and ready!!! Seriously, it has to be one of the coaches or someone from Orleans. Its pretty hard to go outside mid season.
We need fire! BRING BACK BOBBY V…...

On the other hand everyone wanted Coughlin fired and he's a hero now isn't he, so as scoopccop says….You never know.

  17. Scott from Pelham

Sloppy not much to choose from with the exception of HoJo and you would only choose him because he is well liked by the fan base.
I guess this means the Mets are going to have to be a real disaster for any managerial change. This is probably a good thing. At least at this point in time.

  18. Steve (The Original)

It will never happen, but Ken Oberkfell would deserve a shot at managing the club.

  19. sloppy

Hey Scott from within has worked well in the past. The promoted Davey from tidewater, and the best of them all remember the heavyweight champion of the world and NY Met manager Joe Frazier? promoted from within. Wes wEstrum promoted. But Harrelson. Well I guess a .250 avg ain't so good. BRING BACK BOBBY V
    Can we trade with Japan?

  20. Mike F

Every day this team looks more and more like a 500 club at best.
How about Wally Backman for manager.

  21. Scott from Pelham

    Bobby V would be great.
    Trivia question for the day.
Who was the interm manager when Wes Westrum was fired ?
Sloppy I know you have the answer but I wonder if anyone else does.

  22. Steve (The Original)

Salty Parker (And I didn't look it up either!)

  23. Scott from Pelham

    Well Done

  24. sloppy

I didn't know the answer. Good for you Steve (the original)..... That was the 60's bro….. You know what they say about the 60s. "If you remember them you probably weren't there."

  25. JK

The team is not better than its record. But I think they certainly have the talent to play better. And it is way too early to panic the way many Mets fans have.

Yes, I'll say it. It's only April.

I know it's hard for Mets fans to chill out. But that's exactly what they should do. Let the Mets get back Duaner and Pedro and Alou. Let the season play itself out. If it gets down to the wire and there's no chance for the playoffs, then the panic is warranted.

I know parts of the team have not looked good. Like the bullpen. But I think that'll improve. The lack of timely hitting is glaring, and I don't think it's going to get much better. The pitching will just have to pick up the slack.

A managerial change mid-season is not the answer and it's not going to happen. They'll at least wait until after the season. And if Willie's job is on the line, so is Omar's. I don't believe the Wilpons are going to give him a free pass.

  26. scoopcoop

Let's remember that unless the team is a total disaster (like under .500 BB at mid-yr), Willie is not gonna be cut loose b/c he is owed a lot of $$. Very unusual for Mets to pay someone who is not working for the team.

Yeah I know Howe was owed alot but I don't see the same thing playing out.

  27. OMAR PADILLA

"If it gets down to the wire and there's no chance for the playoffs, then the panic is warranted."

If there's no chance for the playoffs pal the smart fan will be watching the Giants or the Jets.
