As Scoopcoop alluded to, there isn't exactly any future Cy Young winners to bump Figueroa from the rotation. Short of Duque and/or Pedro coming back, Figueroa has earned the right to pitch until he stinks it up a few times, at which point Vargas will slide into the rotation.

Surfing around the sports pages this morning, I learned that Tony Pena, Sr. called Omar last year when Figueroa was in the Dominican pitching what he called "ten inning games" and Omar went to see him and ended up inviting him to Mets ST this year.

Also because he was small he thought he would never get a college invite, but he did get one at Brandeis where he made the team immediately and also got a BA in American Studies.

I saw him on the SNY.tv video clip this morning and he certainly is poised and well spoken - reminding me very much of Ron Darling - who also had nice things to say about Nelson during his recap clip.

Let's hope the story has more chapters and that Nelson continues with his dream, all summer.

from Scott Erickson and James Baldwin to Chan Ho Park and Brian Lawrence the Mets have tried guy after guy who has had former success, and is clearly done. Its about damn time they tried someone who's never been given a true chance for success...

During the course of his career, Figueroa has been a teammate of Dale Sveum, Pete Incaviglia, Dan Plesac and Mike Morgan.
