Mets Chat Room: Figueroa goes against Brewers.

Nelson Figueroa is a good story. A baseball lifer from Brooklyn getting a chance to pitch for his favorite childhood team. I got to talking with him this spring about his cottage industry of making 9-11 T-shirts.
Hard to say the Mets are on a roll. After all, it’s been only two games. The Brewers can be a scary team in that they have some power and that turns games around in a hurry.

Ugh, will they ever get rid of the awful home black uniforms?
Road black is fine, but the home black jerseys stink.
Doug – I agree with you, I’m sort of a baseball purist – white at home, gray on the road.
Here’s the link to John’s recent article about Figueroa:

(in case that doesn’t work, the article appeared on the LoHud Mets Sports Page on March 16, 2008)
Doug: Don’t care much for them either. Like the white with pinstripes best.-JD
Intersting but….
Aaron Heilmann wants to start and is sucking in the pen.
Brett Myers wants to be in the pen and is sucking as a starter.
Anybody awake out there? when does Fig lose his adrenelin?
Omar: It’s flowing isn’t it? The good story is very good. I pull for good stories, and Figueroa is definitely one.-JD
After pitching in Mexico and Taiwan, I don’t think Figgy’s adrenaline will subside until around 2-3am tomorrow morning.
Overweight first basemen should be in the AL and become DH guys. I think Prince is the heaviest vegetarian ever.
Good fundamentals by Easley. The subs play the game the right way.
With a lead the adrenalin may not subside until May!!!!
Before we support road blacks I just want to throw this out there: Road blues. I miss them. I have a road blue racing stripe (88). 100x better than the road blacks.
Like Ron and Gary were saying before, its interesting to see how much Prince has recessed as a first baseman
And wow, Nelson Figueroa, what a start so far and his family was great too
Of course its kinda early to start thinking about “it”, but what a story it could be…
Very important part of the game right here. The tying run is at the plate. He can’t afford to lose his focus right now.-JD
How can Prince field when he can’t bend over?
Nice analysis by Darling explaining the problem on the relay throw.
Looks like the tank is empty and the adrenalin is gone Omar Padilla. Who’s pitching the 8th tonite guys?
Guys wonder why pitchers can’t go deep. There was no reason for Yost to take that kid out. 3-1 in the 5th. Yost is another bad manager. 4 innings. What he throw 60-70 pitches?
I wouldn’t have pulled him either. One horrible AB by Reyes. Could have given us a much needed laugher.
As to the question, in the 8th inning tonite I will close my eyes!
Sloppy: Here’s a thought. If he went with the conventional batting order, then Yost wouldn’t have had to burn a pinch-hitter right there.-JD
Reyes out of the game.
I was wondering why he didn’t motor down the line on the DP.
reyes out of the game? maybe he’s being punished.
delgado should get punished too.
yeah i am hating. my gosh he is so done. stick a fork in him..
But hey its early i could be wrong. but hey i wasnt wrong last year ;-)
i hate the black. it has no place in the mets uniform. its 2 colors.
Dodger Blue and giant orange.
maybe white. every so often…
;-}
loggin off to finish watching this game and see delgado not produce for the 6 game.
Tight left hammy for Reyes. They say day-to-day, which is what you expect them to say. I wouldn’t count on him tomorrow.-JD
Better safe then sorry with Jose.
Let him rest, we certainly have enough middle infielders on the bench
UPDATE: Jose Reyes it out of the game due to a TIGHT hamstring. With damp conditions expected all weekend, we may be seeing more of an Easley/Anderson double play combo.
I knew someone would hit me about the 8 hole!!!! Didn’t matter. Shouldn’t have pulled the guy in the 5th down 2.
Randolph was lucky that inning. Should have pulled te T-shirt guy.
Not watching…was he limping noticeably??
Thanks John, now we know that Reyes has a hamstring problem.
They couldn’t have asked for more from Figueroa. ... I don’t want this to go unnoticed, but Marlon Anderson did a great job backing up that play. Kept a runner out of scoring position. That could be big.-JD
What about Reyes???
Wonder how long Reyes has had hamstring twinges? (Jeter is still day-to-day after almost a week)
I was very glad to see Nelson pitch so well – he’s certainly put in enough time elsewhere.
Not really “limping” but he wasn’t running like usual, especially on that double play ball.
Mike: Tight left hammy. I posted that shortly after he left the game. Day-to-day is what they are saying. Don’t count on him tomorrow.JD
THX
Nothing could help this team more then Aaron Heilman having a 1-2-3 inning here.
What a great story Figueroa is. It’s been five years since he’s had this feeling.-JD
What a great game thanks to Nelson Figueroa -he lived his dream tonight.
Howie has put it in the books already.
OK, JD you have something good to write about… Go to it!!!!
JD—you beat me to it, was about to post the same about Nelson.
I thought this was an encouraging game all-around, would have been nice to bust it open back in the 4th, but I was pleased (albeit nervous) to see Willie show faith in Heilman by bringing him out in the 8th in a tight game.
My guys were there again and had a blast—even stayed to the end, my son was so “damaged” by the Benitez-Looper years that he still usually insists on leaving before the 9th.

Round One: Duaner Sanchez
In his second to last rehab appearance, Duaner Sanchez threw a hitless 15 pitch inning allowing just a walk. Duaner came into a 0-0 game, after starter Joselo Diaz had thrown 7 scoreless innings against Round Rock.
Duaner is expected to pitch again for New Orleans tomorrow, and then if everything goes right, be called up to the majors on Tuesday.
Hopefully Charlie breaks out the pinstripes for Johan’s first home start.
I’d rest Jose for the rest of the weekend and with the off day and look to get him back in there on Tuesday against the Nats.
Well it’s good to know two pitchers we did not expect much out of did well.
I do not understand this black thing. Many teams use black even if it’s not their colors. The old uniforms were fine. These are just wacky. Get rid of them.
Figgy does look more serviceable than Lawrence or Lima at least.
If Reyes is gonna be out several days, can Mets now put Castillo on DL? They’ll be down 2 guys.
To Dave: They designed the black jerseys to they have something else to sell at the souvenir stands. Plain and simple. They make them, somebody buys them.-JD
Yeah, I guess. Black is a popular color.
Still don’t like it tho.
If Sanchez comes out I guess the first guy to go down will be Muniz. When Wise comes back, I guess Smith gets the shaft.
scoopcoop: You and me are more serviceable than Lima/Lawrence!!!!!
Man we had a hell of a thunderstorm. I’d thought I’d come back and see more stuff.
I like the black jersies. Teams look meaner then they do in pinstripes.
Nice call Dan Gurney about Tom Landry. Did everyone mock LaRussa when he invented the rule about the closer be only allowed to pitch the 9th inning. I hate that one but it sure took over the game.
Castillo had better be playing or on the DL tomorrow. Easley/Anderson up the middle isn’t fair to any pitcher. The way this team is hitting its a perfect time for Anderson Hernandez. Nobody will notice the fact that he can’t hit.
I’m sorry guys, but I’ve been having major Internet problems and have to shut it down for the night. Keep posting and I’ll check in tomorrow. Johan Santana makes first Shea appearance as Met. I just hope they get it in.-JD
