You could look at last night from several angles. I am thinking the Mets could have lost last night and dropped two of three to the Phillies.
But, they didn’t.
They overcame Aaron Heilman and their offense slept in the clutch, yet, they still found a way to win. Right now, that has to be looked at as a positive thing.
That’s the big picture.
Heilman will get it together eventually. That’s what his track record says. He’s somebody to worry about. Just not yet.

I agree. They could have lost but they didn’t. Heilman has his issues but usually is an effective pitcher.
Winning 2 of 3 is better than losing 2 of 3. Now the daily questions of do they fear the Phils will subside a bit.
JD: Spot on. They found a way to win, even if it wasn’t crisp and pretty at times. It’s easy to win and relax when everything clicks, but last night’s game is how you win a division over the course of 162 games.
They won last night because of old fashion “small” plays.
get the guy on base. steal.. get a single or double..
it wins he game every time. Not having someone go up there and swing for the fence when he’s had a lousy 2 years.
I did notice he got dropped to the 5 spot too. cant wait to see him go to the 6 or 7 spot.
8th is too important. ;-)
gee who could i be talkin bout???
Phils are 4-6. Moyer and Eaton stink (except against the Mets-has there ever been two SP on the same team who are so good against one team and so bad against everyone else?) and Kendrik is not much better
Braves are 3-6. They have already lost 5 one-run games and their BP has given up more HRs than anybody else. They have the worse record in 1 run games (a sign the BP is bad) for the last 2 yrs. Yeah, I know. They looked good against Mets.
These teams have problems too. Probably worse than the Mets.
Where is the DC dude? I want to hear him talk up his last place team.
I’m not worried about Heilman. He’s had a rough start both of the last two years, but is lights out from the all star break on.
Please tell me that you are not hating on Delgado, Steve C. He’s hitting .313 and is consistently hitting the ball the other way. Aside from throwing the ball into Utley’s back on Tuesday, Delgado has been fantastic so far.
When Scot Schoenweis comes thru in the clutch it makes me believe in miracles. LOL. I think in the long run, as Jose goes, so goes the Mets. He got a couple of hits, hit the ball hard on one of his outs, so hopefully he can get things going.
Dave,
I was thinking the same thing. I remember that moron (dc dude) made a comment that the Mets beat a minor league team (florida marlins) mean while that same team (marlins) just swept his pathetic nationals. It’s a free country so I don’t have a problem with people trolling, I just have a problem with people trolling just to talk nonsense to instigate and that is that dc dude. He talks garbage and shows he doesn’t know anything about baseball, his motive is to try and instigate.
I’m right here. Unlike you little metsies who hide in a corner and cry when your metsies suck, I’m here no matter what. You only can beat the phils when J-Ro takes a vacation. you are the 3rd tem in nyc forever. you will never be # 1 in your own city and you boo your own team so much your entire organization and fandom is the laughingstock of America. You have the worst GM in the world, the worst manager in the worlds, the worst farm in the world, and by far the worst fans in the world and you will be down with us soon enough…
tomg: You are 50% I am here to bother you little metsies, the worst fans in the world, but I know more about baseball than all the little metsies here combined, except maybe Keith, who knows baseball but has bad taste in teams to root for. (and Delcos, who is covering the Mets but it is obvious he’s too smart to root for them!) And unlike you sore loser metsies, I’m not afraid to show up when my team loses. You won 2 games and you’re big tough little metsies. You make excuses for everything because you know your team is a bunch of wimps, weak but very rich wimps. I wish I was a metsie so I could make a lot of money to play way below my supposed abilities.
I see Minaya brought one more old buddy in to make you a bit worse. Maybe Frank Robinson will be your next manager. At least he wouldn’t trat your old over the hill wimps with kid gloves. He’d make them miserable for sucking so bad.
Let me ask you little metsies something. 2 out Reyes on second and he barely gets home and should have been out if there was a real catcher blocking him. Did he get slow over the winter or did he not hustle home becauase he wants to be like the old metsies anf be lazy?
I’ll come back tomorrow to see all yoyur little metsie answers.
Yankees # 1 in NYC forever. Brooklyn Dodgers # 2 in NYC forever.
PS: I forgot to mention that you have the most boring team in history as well. At least the metsies are # 1 in something.
GO BREW CREW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Donn..I think however that Delgado is aging a bit. His defense has not changed, was never really the strong point of him….but his hitting even though he is going the otherway does not mean he is doing better, he seems to even take the inside pitch the other way..aka..is no longer driving the ball…I’m sort of worried about him…anyone else agree?
I gotta hand it to the DC dude, he comes out even when his team sucks. Maybe I shouldn’t call him a baby anymore. We shall see.
As for Delgado, yes he is hitting 300 but with the exception of a weekend with ATL we did not face good pitchers. There were many fat pitches with men on base that 2 years ago would be over the fence or at least roped and he wiffs or fouls off.
At this point I would rather have Church at #5.
hello from DC,
any mature adult would see from your post above that you know nothing about baseball. All you do is talk trash against the mets and there fans. That’s not knowing baseball, that’s just being immature. I really hope you are a 10 year old because if your not, that’s sad.
hello from dc,
“2 out Reyes on second and he barely gets home and should have been out if there was a real catcher blocking him. Did he get slow over the winter or did he not hustle home becauase he wants to be like the old metsies anf be lazy?”
Dushbag, let me try to explain this so even your IQ could understand. Pagan has no power and is mostly a singles hitter so the centerfielder is playing shallow, that’s why it was a close play at the plate. Your comment shows you know nothing about baseball, case closed, just a low life that has nothing better to do with his time but to come on another teams blog and irritate people. I know your type, tough guy behind a keyboard but a little girl when confronted in person.
Hello from DC,
one more thing, since your post are totally retarded and childish I will skip your post when I see your name because you have nothing to bring to the table when talking baseball, your post aren’t worth reading or getting excited over.
Dan & Dave:
Of course I’ll agree that Delgado is aging and not driving the inside pitch like he used to, but he’s our 1st baseman for better or for worse. Willie will never bat Church in front of Carlos because Willie loves his veterans, not to mention that Church hasn’t hit lefties any better than Delgado thusfar. Because of that fact, I choose to cheer Carlos on – especially when he’s hitting over .300 and going opposite field consistently.
It’s funny because last year everyone wanted to run Delgado out of town because he was hitting .220 and was trying to pull everything. Now he’s hitting over .300 and going the other way consistently and people still aren’t happy with him (granted it’s only been 8 games). I feel like Delgado will never get a fair shake here because people are expecting the numbers he put up when he was in his prime 5 years ago, and that’s just plain not going to happen.
A healthy and effective Duaner Sanchez could change this, but as of today I think the Phils’ bullpen is better than the Mets’ bullpen. The Philly starting rotation, of course, is brutal and can be counted on to get ripped w/ regularity I think (except when Eaton and Moyer face the Mets).
And yes, you should be worried about Delgado b/c he is done as a power hitter. But like Donn said, he is the 1B for better or worse and will not be dropped in the order unless he hits under .200. So really we can stop talking about who should replace him b/c there is no discussion to be had until the offseason.
Heilman is not good….he’s a 7th inning pitcher at best. I hope by mid-May, Dirty Sanchez is able to secure the 8th inning slot because without him, the Mets are dead men walking, IMO.
Donn,
In my earlier post I said he is the 1B because of the contract. He is not useless. In fact if he was a walk on we would love him like Pagan.
Last year I defended him until about August. In 06 he was great and was the best clutch hitter in the post season we had. Last year his numbers were good, but considering who he is it was a disappointment.
I am watching him when I can to see if I believe he has recovered. At this early date I feel he is who he is. He will end up with whatever avg he will. He will probably end up with 20-25 HR. Not bad. But IMHO he adds no protection for Beltran and if they can throw an 89 mph fastball by him what good is he at 5?
I havent looked at the numbers but I believe Church has 8 rbi’s and is hitting north of 350. Again I have no long term faith in him. I hope HoJo has fixed his swing so he is effective. The real #5 is on DL. But I would rather have someone with the ability to fight off pitches and perhaps get a hit over someone who will get burned with RISP.
At this point I think this means Church over Delgado.
I do not think the mgr owes Carlos anything at this point. He is playing for next year and probably won’t be back. Willie is free to do what is best for the team.
tomg: I’m in your head more than J-Ro is in the Mets head…. 3 responses form one little metsie to one post.
Love you little metsies…. can’t even be happy when you get lucky and win a game.
dave: you’re ok too!!!!! dave the only difference between you and me is I know the worst gm in the world destroyed my franchise and its gonna take a long time to recover, and you haven’t come to that realization yet….
DC
Your team was destroyed by the ownership of the team which was the Commissioner. A few years ago Montreal was a good franchise on a budget when baseball did their best to destroy the team.
There is talent on the Nats, notably the 3b – altho ours is better. You guys are young and not a threat although you may think you are.
If last year tought us anything, it is that “w win is a win”
Just get it, and put it in the books. And don’t get too hung up on the Aesthetics.
hello from DC: One comment on Met history. It is apparent you have no idea of the colorful early history of the Mets.
From Marv Throneberry and Casey Stengel to the 69 Miracle Mets. The Mets had many moments that were far from boring.
In fact if you look it up the early Mets drew more fans than the Yankees.
Scott from Pelham:
Actually Scott I do know about the early Mets. I grew up not so far from Pelham in the Bronx, near Pelham Parkway, you know all those big ugly buildings off of I-95, Co-op City, the most hideous thing ever built other than your current team. Ok, I agree the early Mets weren’t boring but the 2008 Mets are very very boring…...
Hey DC, what do you think of Shawn Hill? There are some out there who think he could win double digits this season.
As for Heilman, the guy drives me nuts, but he is actually one of the better setup men around. We’re spoiled by ‘06 when we had a ridiculous bullpen. I said it the other day, you could have picked names out of a hat that year. Everyone in that bullpen pitched awesome that year.
Hill is on the disabled list. He pitched a rehab start in A ball and only threw 67 pitches. His elbow always hurts. How is he going to win double digits? The say he’s going to pitch in AAA next and then maybe be brought back. I doubt it. Our rotation is so freakin bad I think El Duqie could start for us with his boot or cast on or whatever he’s wearing. Did you see who opened the season for us? We’ll never recover from having the worst GM in the world.
This is for all you Milledge haters:

Must piss some of you little metsies off to see a kid like Milledge doing good in the community….
Heilman is not good? Let’s remember his last 3 yrs.
Last yr he gave up 6 HR before AS game, 2 after. I believe he did about the same in 06. He pitches better in the 2nd half. He was only scored upon in 5 of his last 37 appearances last yr.
Inn Wk so era
87 37 106 3.17
87 28 73 3.62
86 20 63 3.04
Judge based on facts. Don’t be one of those emotional, uneducated callers that talks to fat man and puppy dog. Look it up before you speak nonsense.
The Mets problems last yr had little to do w/heilman. Their problems were Elduqe hurt, and no BP depth (Mota and Sele and Show stunk).
Well, Hill will only have missed, what, 4 starts? He was supposed to be your opening day starter and all he had was forearm tightness. I think he may have an outside shot at 10. Especially as your younger players come on at the end of the season.
I always liked Milledge. But I am also liking Church. While Millz has the potential to have a much better career, I think Church is a fine player.
I was going to leave but if we’re gonna talk real baseball I’ll stay. I’ll believe Hill is ok when he comes up. The Nats lie about injuries just like the Mets and everyone else I guess. Can he win 10….. I doubt. Acta has a really fast hook. Sparky Anderson type guy. And with little offense it makes it hard for anyone to win 10.
DC
Stop with the insults you are much more interesting when you are not trying to bait.
