Mets Chat Room: Mets going for series win vs. Phils

April
10

I’m expecting a turnaround game tonight from John Maine. For whatever reason, he didn’t look good vs. Braves, but I have a feeling he’ll come up big tonight.

No Jimmy Rollins tonight for the Phillies.

In-game analysis: Mets 4, Philadelphia 3 (12)

TWELVE INNINGS:  Angel Pagan comes through and it looks like the Mets caught a break on the call at the plate.
BOTTOM OF THE ELEVENTH: Scott Schoeneweis came up big.
EIGHTH INNING: You just saw 2007 in capsule form. The bullpen giving it up and the offense failing in the clutch.
SEVENTH INNING: Maine was fortunate to get out of the sixth, but couldn’t get one out in the seventh. Good luck for him, but Pedro Feliciano struck out the side.
FOURTH INNING: Nice bit of hitting by Ryan Church in going the opposite way for two-run single. Both he and Brian Schneider have hit well so far.
THROUGH THREE INNINGS: Maine dealing so far. He got away with a mistake last inning. Adam Eaton also on his game. Jose Reyes hit the ball hard, but if the balls aren’t dropping, what’s wrong with dropping down a bunt?

  1. stick

this is the Mets. If Castillo says just let him be Day to Day, put him on the DL right now and get a replacement up.

I hate when they carry injured guys like this, forcing the bench to be short handed.

  2. John Delcos

Stick: Exactly. Remember in 2006 when they carried Cliff Floyd for over a month and got nothing out of him? Or, how about the nonsense last year with Paul Lo Duca? Put him on the shelf and be done with it. Frankly, I like Damion Easley better.-JD

  3. Doug

Agreed. Argenis Reyes has a .850 OPS and a .350 BA and he had a pretty solid spring, give him a call.

This is where having Jose Valentin healthy would have been huge.

  4. Doug

I love SNY and I like that they try to be innovative and do new things, but honestly, I don’t need to watch every other pitch behind the mesh screening.

  5. John Delcos

Doug: I just looked up and saw it. It’s a great shot. But, it’s like they found a new toy and can’t stop playing with it.-JD

  6. John Delcos

Maine had him at third. I think he knows it, too.-JD

  7. vanlinglemungo

The new Mets radio announcer does not know the players’ names! He confused Beltran and Delgado (hint: only one plays in the outfield). He refers to players by their position: “the right fielder,” “the second baseman.” That’s sloppy when referring to the visiting team, but unforgivable when referring to the home team. Maybe unforgivable is a bit harsh, but it’s not good.

  8. Doug

8 games, and 3 stolen bases.

I’m surprised Willie didn’t hit and run with Pagan and Wright.

  9. JM

    Ryan Church has friends!

  10. John Delcos

Great inning by Maine. Six pitches. Gets his team up quickly after getting the lead.-JD

  11. JM

    JD,

As you pointed out in the first game of this series, the Phils are not likely to be shut out. The Mets will NOT win this game with 2 runs. They MUST add on.

  12. John Delcos

To JM: As good as Maine is tonight, you’re right. They are too good to get blanked. One of their problems has been taking their foot off the gas.-JD

  13. Doug

What a throw by Schneider, just money.

And what a mess of a play that just was, the ball hitting the bag, the close play at first and then the collision.

    Yeesh.

  14. John Delcos

Stat note: Pat Burrell has 41 career homers vs. Mets. This is a potential turning point in the game.-JD

  15. Annie Savoy

Vanlinglemungo – FYI – the Mets radio announcers are Howie Rose, Wayne Hagin and Eddie Coleman. Tom McCarthy who worked for the Mets the last couple of years has gone to the Phillies.

  16. John Delcos

The wisdom of The Jacket: Throw a damn strike.-JD

  17. John Delcos

    Can I hear an AMEN?-JD

  18. JM

I am scared to death anytime Delgado touches the ball.

  19. Doug

This is a key inning with 2-3-4 coming up

A run here would be massive.

  20. JM

Is anyone else surprised at how patient Pagan is and how well he goes the other way?

  21. vanlinglemungo

Annie-thanks. It was Wayne I was complaining about. Howie and Eddie are excellent. I know Wayne is new, but he seems to leave out details that are key, like the number of outs, and as I previously mentioned, the names of the players. I listen to a lot of games on the radio and can be a little picky. But its early in the season and everyone is working out the kinks. I should give him a break.

  22. Evan

The rest of the goof troop should take a lesson from Angel Pagan, He seems hungry to win and always ready to go. Lets go mets!!!!

  23. Annie Savoy

VLM – I think it’s hard to be the new guy when Howie has been in the booth for about 15+ years. I’ve listened to games on the radio for years – no annoying flashing numbers, boxes or charts and a good announcer will give you all kinds of interesting information.

I’m late to the game tonight because the Masters ran late. They had a fog delay this morning.

  24. John Delcos

Bet on this. After the game Maine will talk about losing focus. He did in the sixth, ran up his pitch count, and didn’t get an out in the seventh. Saw a camera shot of him in the dugout. I’ve seen him happier.-JD

  25. Doug

Maine’s velocity seemed to dip to start this inning, I wonder if those walks finally caught up to his arm.

  26. JM

Now Keith Hernandez has Ron Darling calling our catcher, “Snider.” He is such a bad influence.

  27. Evan

    JD,
Whats with the article in the post that says other gm’s are wondering why the mets do not use aaron heilman as a starter? How much interest is there from the other teams and what are they offering? Also according to mike and dog he wants out of here as soon as he gets the chance because of the organizations refusal to start him. Id hate to lose him.

  28. Doug

Besides the one hitter, Heilman was a very lousy starter. People also forget he came back his next turn after the one hitter and got lit up.

5.93 career ERA as a starter in over 130 IP

If he wants to walk, he’ll walk and we’ll take the two draft picks.

  29. John Delcos

Evan: Old news. Any opposing GM that wants to use Heilman as a starter is looking at it from his team’s perspective in its rotation.

And, Mike and Dog aren’t breaking any news in that statement. I’ve been writing it for two years now, and I’m not the only one, that Heilman will test the FA market to try to start.

The Mets do not want to use him as a starter. He hasn’t been used in that capacity since 2005 and will have to be built up again if that were to happen. It can’t be done in the middle of the season, at least not with a lot of success.-JD

  30. JM

    Trouble.

  31. Evan

Well he shut me up. He cant relieve so how can he start.

  32. John Delcos

Here’s another thing about Heilman staying in rotation. He told me this spring that unless he can do his current job he’s not going to get the opportunity to do another job. Guess what? He’s not doing it in the pen right now.-JD

  33. Doug

Duaner Sanchez can’t get back soon enough.

If his back to back appearances this weekend go well, I hope they will have him activated by Tuesday.

  34. fire me

hey its me willie… pls fire me. i suck i should of left in feliciano but i dont know how to manage. i am an idiot who keeps bringing in lame relievers and oh yea ill leave them in until i feel like walking back to the mound

  35. John Delcos

We’re going to hear some boos here. There they are.-JD

  36. Annie Savoy

Of course it was too good to last…... Are these pitchers listening to the Mets pitching coach?

Rick Peterson has a great expression: “Velocity gets you signed, command gets you to the majors.”

  37. JM

If the roles were reversed, the Phils would come back and find a way to pull this out. The Mets have a chance to show some heart here.

  38. John Delcos

See what happens when Jose Reyes hits the ball on the ground? You have to get the runner over, but I might have given Reyes a chance to steal before going to the bunt.-JD

  39. RMKMets

Heilman sucks. This is no different than how he pitched last year. He’ll have one or two straight outings where he looks unhittable and then he’ll pull this garbage. I mean the guy’s ERA last year WAS in the mid 3s if I recall….that sucks for a reliever.

The team was stupid to think they could rely on him. In fairness I guess they didnt have much other choice…

  40. RMKMets

Beltran needs to put his bat where his mouth is…he talked a big game now he needs to come thru and get it done here with a big hit. Jimmy Rollins, for all his talking, would deliver here…

  41. RMKMets

Beltran K’d…so typical of this team of heartless players

  42. John Delcos

Nice numbers by Delgado vs. Romero (1-for-12).-JD

  43. John Delcos

I’ve seen that inning more than a few times.-JD

  44. BH

I’m really starting to hate this team….just not fun to watch play.

  45. Annie Savoy

    Billy Wagner?? God help us…

  46. Dan Gurney

Is it time for a rant about “can’t get a big hit..or even flyball..out of Beltran and Delgado?” Are the Mets stuck in a time loop, repeating the last two weeks of September? We will find out.

  47. Doug

Here comes the heart attack inning.

    Wagner vs. the Phillies.

    I’m not confident.

  48. Flmetfan

Unreal!!! How do you not score their?

  49. Mike

There are two guys on the entire 25-man roster who I trust to come through in the clutch: DW and Marlon Anderson.

That is pathetic, just like that last showing. I don’t even get that disappointed when they don’t come through in situations like last inning because they just never do.

  50. OMAR PADILLA

What’s the good of having Reyes on first with none out if you’re gonna waste an out every freaking time with a bunt.
But besides that, BH you are so right. this team has no entertainment value anymore. They look like losers, and they play like losers.
The pen’s so bad you can’t even bring this Schonesweis in to face Howard because he’s so freakin bad and you can’t take Heilmann out when he sucks because its against some law that Wagner can’t pitch in the 8th.
Man, I missed the first 6 innings. I wish i missed the whole damn game.

PS: What’s their avg with guys in scoring position??? Is it even .100?

  51. Doug

Before tonight they were hitting .133 with RISP

Hopefully they can end this sooner then later.

  52. OMAR PADILLA

“You just saw 2007 in capsule form. The bullpen giving it up and the offense failing in the clutch.”

Man, Why did anyone really think the same group would change. Either your clutch or your not clutch….. The New York Mets are not clutch.

Even if they win, how many times are you going to win with no hitting and no bullpen? Not enough for sure.

  53. Cliff

Heilman needs a change of scenery – he just plain stinks. This team can’t hit. It is 2007 deja vu all over again. Boring team to watch.

  54. John Delcos

To Omar: If Jose Reyes is the gamebreaker of a player the Mets build him up to be, then give him a chance to steal. The odds are with him. I don’t like that decision. I’m not saying it will cost them the game, but it didn’t help any.

Just a thought, but I don’t think Castillo makes that play.-JD

  55. Mike

John- I know you can’t really do this, but your first question should be, whether they win or lose this game:

“is there a reason none of you can hit in the clutch at any time?”

  56. OMAR PADILLA

So right JD: Bunting Pagan is absolutely horrible…...
Three chances to score on a single vice two…. Horrible and they do it many times.

  57. JM

Mets cannot keep this lineup down much longer . . .

  58. John Delcos

Reyes doesn’t look right at the plate, but I like that he worked the count, which is something he hasn’t done this year. I’d like to see Reyes walk a lot more than he does, and at least he was thinking that.-JD

  59. John Delcos

Mike: Thanks. That’s the first laugh I’ve had in two hours.-JD

  60. Annie Savoy

Is David the only player with any baseball sense? Looks like that’s the case tonight.

  61. Josh

Geez, Beltran Ks in a clutch spot, how shocking.

  62. JM

    Good grief.

  63. Josh

And now there’s 2 on with nobody out. I f**king hate this team.

  64. John Delcos

That botched play is going to bite them in the butt.-JD

  65. OMAR PADILLA

Everybody who’s here should be happy because you probably don’t have season tickets.

  66. JM

The Show cometh. I’m pouring myself a drink.

  67. Annie Savoy

FYI – Andy Pettitte is ahead of KC 4-1 in the bottom of the 7th. Joba will be pitching the 8th.

  68. John Delcos

Scott Schoeneweis is in with the game on the line. He can create a lot of good will for himself now.-JD

  69. OMAR PADILLA

JD: How about a poll to pick the date for the firing. This team has nothing, and the manager goes first…...

Did I read in the Spring what a great defensive catcher Schneider is? Well it must be a different Schneider.

  70. John Delcos

To JM: What did you make?-JD

  71. JM

Scotch, just the bare commodity. Big glass.

  72. Josh

Holy crap. Schoenweis just came through in the clutch…

  73. JM

    In

  74. Doug

    Correct bullpen management

    SHOCKING!

First Delgado fist pump of the year

  75. Annie Savoy

Omar – Season Tickets? I can’t even get the Mets on TV -maybe that’s a good thing…......

  76. OMAR PADILLA

The Tugger must ‘ve been looking down on Schoeneweis and gave him a little miracle….. Think that will inspire the offense???

Scotch good choice…I’ll sticke to beer. I bet its cheaper than at Shea…..

  77. JM

    Awesome.

  78. OMAR PADILLA

    You are very lucky Annie!!!!
I guess you watch the Sox??? At least they are exciting… And good…...

You like that new guy on the radio? Tonight was the first I heard him.

  79. Annie Savoy

Omar – I can still see the Tugger on the mound and I still believe, but it was easier to believe Tugger than these guys.

  80. OMAR PADILLA

    HA HA Good one Annie…..

  81. Doug

Sticking with Show here is a good move IMO

He’ll be gone after Howard though

  82. Mike

John- I know you can’t give a truly accurate answer…but what has happened to this team since ‘06?? I’m not one to panic so early in the season or anything like that…it’s far, far, far, far too early…but it’s largely the same squad and all of that clutchness and grit is completely gone.

I was and to a certain extent, still am a Randolph fan, but I’m beginning to seriously wonder if this team needs to pull a 1995-1996 Knicks. IOW, firing the coach/manager and bringing someone else in to get these guys shaken up.

  83. JM

And the tootsie pops are out.

  84. Doug

I can’t believe they scored that an error on Easley

Thats a tough play to make

But good job by Show and Sosa

    How about a run guys?

  85. John Delcos

To JM: They don’t make scotch flavor Tootsie Pops, do they?-JD

  86. JM

4-4 would feel so much better than 3-5.

  87. JM

No, but that’s not a bad idea, JD.

  88. Doug

    Thats a big win!

  89. Dan Gurney

    Amazing!

  90. JM

    Winner winner chicken dinner.

  91. Annie Savoy

Love that little Angel – let’s keep him. Bring on the Brewers… Howie has finally put this one “In The Books”

  92. OMAR PADILLA

Thank goodness Reyes was on with 2 out. Otherwise they’d have made Pagan bunt. Please don’t let Alou come back. Pagan is one of the few guys with life in his game.

  93. JM

I don’t care what day, week, or month it is. After what happened on Tuesday, coming back and taking 2 of 3 is a sign that this team has some sack, too.

  94. dave

    Pagan is mvp so far.

  95. BH

JD – I wouldn’t say they caught a break on the call at the plate. They showed a bunch of angles and it was “tie goes to the runner” close. Yes Reyes had his foot blocked, but his hand gets in there around the same time he finally gets tagged.

  96. John Delcos

To BH: I wrote that because it was so close that if it went the other way I wouldn’t have been surprised.-JD

  97. Azy

I slowed it down on my tv and it looked like Reyes just nipped the plate a split second before he got tagged.

He should have just ran Coste over but I’ll take the win.

  98. John Delcos

    Some random thoughts about tonight:

-Angel Pagan was the hero, but kudos go to Scott Schoeneweis. It must be tough to go into a game being booed and having to face one of the NL’s toughest hitters.

-They need to get Aaron Heilman fixed, and fast.

-Jose Reyes did several good things tonight to believe he might be coming to life.

-Ryan Church needed a good start and he’s gotten one.-JD

  99. BH

    JD, gotcha…that’s fair.

  100. runnin rebel

Snow White did a fine job of getting out of Jams especially with that DP ball.

  101. Steve C.

You know, with the bullpen being so,so, not unlike the 80’s. maybe the pitch count should go to the dogs and leave the starter in until he’s done. Like the old days. :-)

Last night was a good game. I still Delgado is hurt and shouldnt be playing. It was good to see wright and reyes steal. :-)

We have a good chance this year as long as these guys stay humble and play the game.

  102. scoopcoop

A glass half full says 4-4 is not bad considering poor hitting and BP.

Heilman will be fine. He usually does this early in the season.

  103. dave

    Steve,

I said recently that Delgado is slow on the fastballs his 300 avg and hr notwithstanding. I am starting to feel his critics including yourself are right. He is done. Not that it would matter since he make 20 mil. He is here to stay and will not be re-signed.

Right now Pagan is the hero of this team.

We have 3 pitchers and need 2 more. The rotation is not what it should be.

I have been picking up on your comments about pitchers going at least 7. We have 3 that should be able to do that which should help the pen.

  104. Steve C.

    dave, i hear ya..

think Monday could have been a win if they left Perez in, he was taking out way too early. he stumbled but a wee bit. oh well. one game at a time… lets go mets go..

  105. Keith

This was a good win. Walk off wins can have a galvanizing effect on a team.

    Random thoughts:

Liking Pagan in the two hole. He is patient at the plate and hits the ball where its pitched.

Reyes’ last two hits are exactly why you should NEVER SACRIFICE BUNT WITH HIM. He can hit it far for extra bases, and even when hit on the ground, he is almost impossible the double up.

Church is looking good at the plate. He has a good eye and looks like he is going up the midde/oppo in his approach.

Beltran is so quick to balls inside.

Unfortunately, I may have to concede on Delgado. He missed a few fat pitches yesterday.

Feliciano’s slider was filthy. As was Schoenweiss’ sinker.

Steve, I totally agree with you. Maine, Perez, and Johan should all be going 7 more times than not. I think Pelf could get there eventually once he starts missing some more bats. In Maine’s defense, he likely would have gone 7 if Utley didn’t extend the inning with that lucky bounce off the 1st base bag.

  106. dave

I havent heard Church refered to as a stiff lately.

Perhaps that is a good thing.

  107. hello from DC

“I havent heard Church refered to as a stiff lately.”

    CHURCH IS A STIFF

    Feel better now dave?

  108. metsfan

hey here’s one for you, hello from DC is an internet troll with no life who trolls around on other’s teams’ blog sites because he has absolutely nothing better to do with his time. Good work DC, I commend you for whatever it is you think you’re doing by posting on this blog.

  109. dave

    DC Dude

    Thanks!

  110. hello from DC

glad to make you happy metsfan but you have to admit I’m a lot less boring than that horrbile team the worst gm in the world has put on the field. your most exciting player is Angel Pagan and what’s gonna happen to him someday when Alou declares himself ready for prime time. He’s benched so another overpaid guy can go thru the motions for the worst gm in the world and the worst manager in the world.

Even Met fans hate this team. The booing in Shea Stadium is so loud you can hear it over the roar of the planes… Phillie fans stopped booing their team because they cannot find a way to boo as much as Met fans boo their own team. Even Pat Burrell doesn’t get booed anymore.

  111. metsfan

you make me laugh DC, you really do, i mean, i’m so unhappy with a team that will compete for the division, I mean, I’d much prefer a team that will finish in the basement, you know? I mean, what fun is baseball when you’re playing competitive games, fighting for the division? I’d much rather cellar dwell. Now, if I was the Phillies, I could always hang my hat on having the most losses of any professional sports team in history. Now that’s something.

  112. sloppy

Ignore it and it will go away, maybe….... But since I didn’t either, I wonder what’s selling better in the new park in the middle of hell; Zimmerman shirts, or bullet proof vests? Is it raining in New York tonight?
