Mets in the Afternoon: Pre-game notes

-Duque update: Orlando Hernandez has a strained tendon in his right foot. He’ll be placed in a walking boot for a couple of weeks. The Mets say it is not related to the dislocated toe he had surgery. The Mets aren’t saying if this is related to the experimenting with his wind-up, but that’s a reasonable guess.
-No Luis Castillo tonight. He’s resting his sore right knee. Castillo said he doesn’t believe this is a DL thing. Of course, that can only mean one thing.
-Jose Reyes isn’t concerned about his slow start: “I will get to my level. I’m not worried.”

So we’ll see Luis when the weather gets hot? Miss Julio Gotay. Maybe the Wilpons can add a dome to the new place real fast so Luis can play all season.
El Duque: One more contract a bit too long. So what else is new.
Sloppy: No doubt. I can’t imagine teams lining up to give Duque two years. He and Castillo they will regret if they don’t already.-JD
I know the posts here should be Mets centric but did everyone hear that prize Brave prospect Jordan Schafer the heir to Andrew Jones was suspended 50 games for using HGH.
Could you imagine if this was F Mart.
Met World would really be going nuts.
Scott: No limit on what you can post about. But, you’re right. If F-Mart were to get busted, I would be typing my fingers off.-JD
Hey John, the Mets just signed (or will sign him on Thursday) Claudio Vargas. This according to the NYP.
Thoughts?
“the Mets just signed (or will sign him on Thursday) Claudio Vargas.”
Wow, I’m so excited i can’t wait for him to pitch in a Met uniform, NOT!!!.
Another bum who won’t be able to pitch pass five innings, great.
By the way, I heard Willie Randolph on mike and the mad dog answer Mike’s question “why did you remove Oliver Perez from the game, was it the pitch count?” Willie’s response, “I didn’t like the way he was pitching, he was struggling from the start. When i heard that I almost fell off the chair I was sitting in. Oliver Perez had a 2-0 lead, if that is struggling than I hope Oliver struggles some more. I did not like the things Randolph was saying today. I will be surprised if he last the year as the met manger.
Sign me! I can help
Tomg, maybe Perez wasn’t “struggling” from the start, but there is no way you leave him in the game after that walk. He had lost all control, and it was pretty obvious he had nothing left.
Roger: My first thought is it means they have no confidence in Duque coming back. This isn’t a guy who can carry a team, but maybe he can eat some innings.-JD
tomg, this is what happened before Willie pulled Ollie:
P Burrell walked.
P Burrell to second on balk by O Perez.
J Werth walked, P Burrell to third on passed ball.
Seemed to me like Ollie was about to self-destruct. Further he threw 94 pitches throug 5.2 innings. Not exactly the picture of efficiency. He only had 2 K’s… so there was no reason for him to be running such deep counts.
Good signing I guess. As I said yesterday, you manage for contingencies. We have no pitching ready to come in to help. Time to sign the garbage floating out there and hope the two ancient wounded can come back and help this year.
Vargas on a ML deal? Good signing.
IMO, Castillo can move to Tibet and spend 4 years chatting with the Dali Lama. If I never saw him at Shea again, it would be too soon.
I was pushing for Pagan in the 2 hole, and darned if I didn’t get my wish! I don’t want to see Easley long term, but I really feel the lineup will work better with Pagan up top, and Castillo can take his bunt or try to walk approach to the 8 hole.
Oh, and El Duque is El Duno. At this point, I honestly don’t think we will see him pitching for the big club.
2-4 weeks in the boot, another aborted rehab attemp (ending of course in another injury) and he will just retire. I hope.
El Dookie has to retire… what is he trying to prove? He has ring, what else does he need from MLB anymore?
Reyes:-Jose Reyes isn’t concerned about his slow start: “I will get to my level. I’m not worried.â€
What are we talking about here? His bat or fielding percentage? If I didn’t know better I would say his slow start on the DP last night. He needs to learn to field before he bats..
When he fields, he needs to keep his head down to look at the ball. Baseball 101. If he is worried about getting hit in the face with the ball, wear a Pelfrey guard (this may help him with Rollins too if you know what I mean).
If willie is going to have that passive approach to the media, I hope he is saying things differently behind the door. If he is not, then he needs to takes notes from Davey J. (the player’s type coach, buddy-buddy)
