Should be a good one today: Santana vs. Smoltz. Good, but hardly the best pitching duel I have seen.
The best live duel?
For me, it probably was Clemens v. Pedro.
Do you have a favorite pitcher’s duel?
Dwight Gooden vs Fernando Valenzuela in 1984. When Fernandomania was still pretty strong and Gooden was the new teenage ace.
My # 1 Met pitching duel was in April 85 at the Vet in Phily: Young Dwight Gooden against aged Steve Carlton. Mets won 1-0, Carlton pitched 7 shut out innings and Gooden pitched 8 shut out innings. I don’t think Carlton had many more good outings. I think Keith drove in only run in 9th….
I am trying to think if Tom Seaver had any mano a mano duels with Juan Marichal, Bob Gibsob or Ferguson Jenkins.
For non Mets it was probably Clemens vs Dave Stewart in the late 1980s.
I have to agree with Dan. Seaver’s battles with Gibson & Marichal were always something to look forward to.
I tend to think of pitchers as individuals on a team and not in relation to the opposing pitcher. Also in a time when a young, talented pitcher is being criticized for his exuberance (please, leave Joba alone) for me it is always the individual traits of a pitcher that stand out in my memories of them.
The elegance and class of Sandy Koufax
The utter arrogance of Bob Gibson
The endurance of Warren Spahn
The strength and athleticism of Tom Seaver
The wonderful grace of Jim Abbott
The winning salutes of Dennis Eckersley
The determination of Tug McGraw
The intelligence of Ron Darling
The joy of Pedro Martinez
I’m too young for all of the one’s listed above, but the bet pitching duel I was in attendence for was Pedro vs. Webb twoor three years ago. It was 0-0 late into the game and Endy Chavez hit a walk off and won it. Both pitchers looked freakin awesome.
Jack Billingham. He was the best as far as I was concerned.
This was best from last year:
