Mets Chat Room: Trying it again

April

Welcome to Mets Chat Room. The tarp is off, but it just started to drizzle. They hope to get this in. The forecast is for rain throughout to the day, but it’s promising tomorrow. Willie Randolph said he’s in favor for playing a double-header tomorrow instead of waiting.

We never got off the ground last night, so if you have a favorite Mets-Braves moment, feel free.

A note to get things rolling: John Smoltz will start tomorrow instead of Tom Glavine.-JD

  2. dave

Saw the lineup by David – what’s with the names? Who coined them?

  3. metsfan

ever heard of a nickname dave? sorry, had to do it…

  4. Doug

Jeez either the Fox gun is wrong or Maine is throwing gas

97? I think the gun might be off a bit

  5. metsfan

yeah, i’m not sure if the gun is fast or not, they had Hudson in the low 90’s on his fastball, which is where he usually sits, i’d say the gun is pretty accurate on Maine, mid-90’s gas. Oh, and Maine had Teixeira on that 1-2 pitch, he’s getting squeezed.

  6. Spiderpig

nice job by Delgado bowling over Larry, then a gift from the Braves second baseman to let Delgado score.

  7. John Delcos

Spiderpig: Agreed. I just hope Delgado doesn’t wake up tomorrow with something sore.-JD

  8. Spiderpig

At least it was better than sliding right into Jones. I was worried, too, though.

  9. Johnny Bravo

Maine is the # 2 guy??? You guys are in big trouble.

  10. John Delcos

Maine looks flat today. Not at all like he’s been this spring. Offense looks listless, too. With them, it’s Hudson.-JD

  11. Johnny Bravo

Same ol’ Mets. Talk big, no results…..

  12. metsfan

amazing how a good pitcher can make your team look like that John, Hudson is on today, his ball is heavy and sinking, and he’s got good offspeed stuff going too. How long has it been since Maine last threw? Looks like he was too pumped up and like he got a bit rattled. Whatever it is, his control is off.

  13. metsfan

Johnny, you’re really going to make a sweeping accusation like that after just under 4 innings in the 4th game of a given season?

  14. Johnny Bravo

metsfan: do all Mets fans make crybaby excuses like you do? Real men don’t make baby excuses like he didn’t pitch for too long. sweeping accusation?? nope just the the same Met garbage that went on all last year as well. Same ol’ Mets. Hudson ain’t nothin special today. Just lucky he’s facing the all talk no action Mets.

  15. metsfan

i will never understand how fans like you can overreact about one game, its one game, and its the 4th game of the season, and you’re already calling this team garbage. Nice.

  16. John Delcos

Wasn’t even close. What a horrible call. That’s so unbelievably bad.-JD

  17. John Delcos

They need to overturn this. Get it right.-JD

  18. RMKMets

That was a terrible call. And McCarver and Buck were making a big deal out of Pagan passing Church, but the only reason that happened was because of the idiot that blew the call on the catch…what idiots

  19. RMKMets

They really need to fine umpires when they make game altering calls like that. It’s inexcusable to miss something so obvious. Sure the Mets scored two but they could have done that with one less out occuring…that totally killed a potentially larger rally

  20. benny blanco from da bronx

    That was sure exciting.

  21. Annie Savoy

As Tim said – ‘what an utterly fascinating play’. I can’t remember seeing one exactly like it myself. Just goes to show you can’t trust the umpires and some instant replay is needed.

  22. Doug

Its not even as if the play was close, the replays showed the ball was at least half a foot in front of Kotsay’s glove.

Professional umpires shouldn’t get calls like that wrong.

  23. Johnny Bravo

metsfan you are so arrogant and stupid. you think I root for your team of has beens, never will be’s and overhyped kids? Your as dumb as those umps are bad…. Johnny Maine Cy Young of spring training HAHA!

  24. Spiderpig

I can’t believe the ump got that so unbelieveably wrong. At least the result ended the same after they didn’t allow Pagan to score. I’m surprised nobody got thrown out of the game after that. Bobby Cox surely would have been upset if more runs scored, though.

  25. metsfan

Johnny, then why are you here? cant you find something better to do with your time then come on other team’s blogs? Isn’t there a Yankee/Philly/Brave blog you can troll around on?

  26. Doug

Looks like the mist is getting a little heavier.

Hope they can get through nine.

  27. Annie Savoy

I’m so glad to be able to hear Tim in the booth today – don’t always get the games he works. I liked him as a catcher and now as an analyst. Boy, can he tell pitcher stories!

  28. Spiderpig

You just knew Gotay would get a hit there.

  29. Spiderpig

Annie – I thought you said last year that you didn’t get FOX games, which I knew had to be wrong, but you never responded. :(

  30. John Delcos

Who didn’t expect Gotay to get a hit?-JD

  31. Johnny Bravo

metsfan, you are so dumb you don’t even know this is a free country. metsfan I’m here to be your worst nightmare today. what’s a matter dopefan, can’t you defend rooting for this pile of junk you call a team. In the clutch, the great David Wright does NOTHING. same ol mets. I’d love to see you guys choke again but you can’t choke when your down with the ants looking up at the big league teams in August and September…..

  32. Johnny Bravo

    Yes, RUBEN GOTAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. Johnny Bravo

David Wright the right guy in the clutch to CHOKE again!!!

  34. Spiderpig

So much for Sosa, eh John?

  35. Jeff H.

John, Please ask Willie why Feliciano or Wise wasn’t ready to face the lefty PH? I knew that and I’m not the manager!

  36. John Delcos

Spiderpig: I think your post landed about the same time that ball did.-JD

  37. Spiderpig

Yeah, soory I’m just piling on because I actually do think he can do a good job in the bullpen. I’m really surprised he wasn’t taken out after the bases were loaded because he didn’t look like he was doing a good job placing his pitches. Where was Feliciano?

  38. Josh

Willie is a goddamn moron. Feliciano should have started the inning, then you bring in Sosa, and at very least, you don’t leave in Sosa to face Kelly Johnson. Horrendous hitting, pitching, and managing today…

  39. John Delcos

To Spiderpig: I don’t know. I saw Feliciano in the clubhouse before the game, so I know he’s here. That was a mistake.-JD

  40. Peter H

Willie made a mistake in not warming up Felicano in time to get ready to pitch against Kelly Johnson. Sosa’s platoon splits against LH are almost as bad as Schoenweis’ splits against RH (not to mention the fact that he just looked like he didn’t have it today) Whenever possible, Willie needs to avoid using Sosa against left-handed hitters in high-leaverage situations.

  41. Johnny Bravo

Where’d metsfan go? jumped off a bridge maybe!!!!

  42. Annie Savoy

This game – interesting and aggravating – is over and it’s “In the Book”.
Tomorrow we get to see Smoltz vs Santana – who will win that battle?
    See you then.

  43. Annie Savoy

Spiderpig – About the FOX games, sometimes I get them, sometimes they are blacked out. Sorry I misled you, but FOX misleads me. Glad I got to see this one if only for that play that the Umps screwed up. The whole game seemed disjointed to me as though this Mets team had never played together before. Oh well, maybe it’s the weather.

  44. Doug

Obviously this isn’t a “losing streak” or anything but this will be Santana’s first test as a stopper.

    I think he’ll do great

  45. Keith

This was a bad game, they happen. However, I do have two complaints: one about the umpire and one about Willie.

About the ump, he was squeezing Maine early, I thought. Maine was running his fastball back over the plate, the same way Hudson was, and he wasn’t getting the call. While Maine wasn’t getting his breaking pitches over, because he wasn’t getting any called strikes, the Braves hitters were just sitting fastball down the middle. I hate this crap, because it feels like this always happens when we play Atlanta. I bet Glavine wins 20 since he’ll be getting the ball 20 feet off the plate again this year. (ok, maybe not, but the Braves always seem to get favorable umpiring behind the plate.)

My one complaint with Willie, and it has nothing to do with Sosa. Why, oh why, did he have Reyes bunting with men on 1st and 2nd with no one out. Maybe if Beltran or even Lo Duca were hitting 2nd I wouldn’t mind, but Castillo is not a run producer and Reyes is one of the best hitters on the team. Plus, he was one of the few guys who was getting the ball in the air off Hudson. Further, Reyes is extremely tough to double up from the left side. I’m sorry, but it is too early in the year and it was too early in the game to be pulling this crap.
