From the clubhouse: Atlanta 11, Mets 5

WILLIE RANDOLPH on Jorge Sosa: He said he liked the match-up with Kelly Johnson in that situation. Result was a grand slam.

JOHN MAINE on his performance:
“I felt the same as I did in my other starts,’’ discounting Randolph’s theory that he was too strong and overthrew. “They did good job of putting the ball in play.’’

Maine said the third was frustrating for him in that he gave up a pair or RBI singles after two were out.

“I wanted to get off to a better start, but I’ll still have 30 some starts left,’’ Maine said.

DAVID WRIGHT:
Said the offense failed on some opportunities (2-for-11 RISP), but: “when you give up 11, there’s not much your offense can do about it.’‘

we will never win with willie why not feliciano for sosa against johnson.. his gut will be what has him fired by may 1 he sucks.. and clark pinch hitting with anderson and endy on the bench.. cmon

  2. benny blanco from da bronx

    Felicano,
    Sosa,
It doesn’t matter they wouldn’t have won the game anyway.

Jeff: It was really early in the game, what difference did it make if he pinch hit Clark, Endy, or Marlon? Personally I would rather Clark over Endy regardless.

As for Sosa over Feliciano, I don’t mind Sosa facing Johnson. My main gripe with that decision was that Sosa had loaded up the bases. He probably shouldn’t have been facing anybody at that point.

Ultimately, Benny is right. Tonight wasn’t our night.

  4. Two-By-Four

If you look at Sosa’s 2007 splits his WHIP and BAA versus left handed hitters is 1.89 and .326 respectively while against right handed hitters it is 0.97 and .202. Lifetime Johnson (although it is a very small sample set) has a 1.000 OPS against Sosa. It should be clear that Sosa should not have been allowed to face Johnson.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

While you all may blame Willie for one reliever vs another, the killer was D Wright… Twice up with two out and runners in scoring position when game was close and he tried to pull two balls and grounded out both times. After the ump botched call, they should have had a big inning but Castillo/Wright killed it. Couldn’r even get Hudson out of game.

Watching Castillo hit little league grounders all the time makes me dread that 4 year deal every day.

“Watching Castillo hit little league grounders all the time makes me dread that 4 year deal every day.”

Ditto. And the biggest reason why I was so puzzled Reyes was bunting with 2 on and 0 outs.

  7. Ryan

As with Schoeneweis last year, there is no evidence that Willie understands platoon splits. Lefties have an 890 OPS against Sosa for his career, including an OPS of 938 against him in 2007.

  8. sloppy

Lets burn the hell out of the bullpen much earlier then we did last year. Use em all every night then we won’t be embarrassed in September because we’ll be long out of the race. Maybe if the offense had done any clutch hitting the bullpen would have been used more fully. But, why bother when nobody can get a hit with runners on 2nd/3rd. Don’t blame the offense because you can’t blame Willie when D Wright sucks correct?
