Weather update #2

April
4

Now, it’s not so good. Sun is gone; replaced by grey. Tarp is on the field. They are trying for an on-time start, but don’t bet on it.

“I hope we get to play,’’ Willie Randolph said.

If not, most likely the Mets will push everybody back a day, meaning Johan Santana  would start the opener.

Randolph said he didn’t consider starting Santana tomorrow, which would have made him available to face the Braves and Phillies.

You think Randolph means what he said there?

Considering one extra day will give all the other guys who need the extrea rest, not playing could help here. The timing in this might be their blessing in disguise.

Reb: I would think so. But, if it were me, I would have gone Santana in both series. You would think you’d like him against Utley and Howard, not to mention Rollins.-JD

  3. runnin rebel

Sure, but I would also think considering El, Pedro acquisition talks, Schneider’s knees, Castro’s knees (and all the other knees I forgot), and Sanchez rehab, buying at least one extra day via tornado for those guys seems to be a more pressing issue. As all the press has said, the key for the Mets this year is health. An extra day’s rest goes a long way towards that.

I tend to cut WIllie some slack, but if he runs Figgy or Pelfrey out against the Phils, just so he can not upset his preciouse order, even though it means Santana would go on 5 days, then he is not qualified to be a ML manager.

You lose a starter, and get handed a gift (maybe) to avoid a turn by a guy that should be in AAA, and you don’t take it? That is nuts.

Santana missing the phils twice is dumb, dumb, dumb. And Willie better be held accountable if he does it, and they light up PelFiggy when the $137,000,000 man is sitting on the bench, relaxing.

Have the Mets thought about going to AZ for Spring Training? I have heard Barometric pressure is terrible for the injuries and joint problems (Florida seems to fit that environment).

  6. runnin rebel

Well I am no Manager so I don’t know what Willie would do in the effects of a perfect storm but….

Ones days rest-is one-days-rest and you can’t beat that with a bat.

  7. metsfan

i think it’s way too early in the year to be switching around pitching or having guys go early just for match ups sake.

  8. MrMet

You’re definitely correct reb, in the fact that a day off would be nice. However, I think with the Braves reeling a bit, and their pen putting in alot of innings so far, they would benefit the most.

Would have been nice to catch ‘em when they’re a bit weak.)

  10. Mike

Hey nice blog, what do you think about mines?

  11. MrMet

    JD,

Santana pitching in both series was no doubt the way to go.

Willie missed the boat on this one.

When you have the Golden opportunity of getting our newly acquired Ace into games against our 2 biggest competeitors, you take it.

  12. Josh

    I need some clarification here…

If the game is rained out, and it’s Maine, Pelfrey, and Santana against the Braves, Braves, and Phillies respectively, wouldn’t the rotation be set up so that Santana does face the Phillies twice?

  13. MrMet

    metsfan,

Nobody would have had to pitch early.

Willie had the rotation set so each guy would pitch on 5 days rest (1 more than usual) to start the season. It’s believed that he did that so that Pedro can get the extra day.

With Pedro out, the correct move would have been to get everyone back to their normal 4 days rest, and allow Johan to pitch against both the Braves and Phils.

  14. MrMet

    Josh,

    No.

The only way Johan could have faced both teams is if he pitched on Saturday, then again in the last game of the Philly series (5 days later).

By Willie pitching him on Sunday (which is 6 days from his first start) he will not be able to pitch again until the first game of the Brewer series.

  15. Josh

I know Santana will be missing the Braves if it rains out tonight, since Willie said everybody’s pushed back a day. (Maine- Saturday, Pelfrey- Sunday)

I was asking if he would get the Phils twice, because someone said he would miss them twice, but I then looked at the schedule, and if Santana starts the home opener, he would get the Phils, then the Brewers, and then the second game in Philly…

  16. mick

    I say we start dong.

    Anyone with me?

  17. MrMet

I see what you’re saying Josh. And you’re absolutely correct.

If Johan pitches the home opener, he will face the Phils in both series’.

    Excellent point.
