Why this was called: There was a tornado watch for the area. They didn't announce that to the crowd for fear of panic, but wanted to clear the area as soon as possible. That's what I was told.-JD

New Bond movie coming out? The series hasn't been the same since George Lazenby left. "Casino Royale" was real lame. Do better, guys.

How about a Mets versus Milwaukee Braves memory? July 26, 1964 at Shea Stadium 31,782 for a Sunday doubleheader (2 games for the price of 1). In the first game in the second inning pitcher Al Jackson (my sole regret of 1969 is Jackson didn't last enough enough to be on the team in October) hits a home run off Warren Spahn and the Mets take a 5-2 lead. But the pitching staff implodes and gives up 7 runs in the last 4 innings to lose the game 11-7. Spahn is basically taken out of the starting rotation (3 more starts as a Brave). Some Braves catcher named Joe Torre goes 3 for 3 with a home run.
Game 2: A real "Pier 6 brawl" as Bob Murphy would say. Mets score 7 runs in the 7th to take a 10-7 lead. But the Arson Squad is in even better form giving up 8 runs in the last two innings for a 15-10 loss. Spahn pitches the last two innings to get a save.
John, I wonder if the "Journal News" might do a daily report of what was going on in the Mets first season at Shea in 1964..both baseball and in the world. For a 109 loss season it was exciting: new stadium with an extraordinary attendance of 1.7 million vs the 1.3 million the Yankees had winning a pennant, Bunning's perfect game, the 23 inning second game of a Memorial Day doubleheader, the final weekend at St Louis where the Mets almost through a monkey wrench into the works by winning 2 out of 3. It was also the last full year of Casey Stengel who had been in baseball for over 50 years and was the only man ever to play/manage all four New York baseball teams. I know it is a lot of work and reflects a Baby Boomer's insistence "The World Revolves Around Us". But the baseball season was great and is a favorite for Strat-O-Matic players to replay

hey dc, I actually live about 10 minutes from Turner field, and it hasn't rained since about 7:30... no lighting, not even thunder... plus, if the Braves were truly concerned about people's safety would they not have canceled the game earlier in the day since we've had a tornado watch since about 5pm?

I seriously think it has something to do with their overworked bullpen, and I don't blame them... I would expect the Mets to do the same thing in that situation.

John - Thanks for the Bond suggestion - right now I'm waiting for the Scorsese film "Shine a Light" about the Stones to make it out of the city and up here in the country. It's getting excellent reviews. Of course - it's Scorsese.

"I'm not going to pretend I know the field conditions, but I wonder if the Braves postponed this one because their bullpen is overworked."

I know ny metsie fans can't understand this but maybe they be a bit nervous with tornado watches in Atlanta after what happeened during the SEC hoops tourney.... i know the metsies would never consider safety.......

time for big league ball.. you metsies fight on....

Doug, actually your writing the word "nightcap" brings me happy memories from back in the day when there actually were scheduled doubleheaders and old school Mets' announcers Lindsey Nelson and Bob Murphy would always call the second game "the nightcap."

Doug, there's no doubleheader tomorrow, hence no nightcap.
Jon: Will Maine go tomorrow then and Santana on Sunday on regular rest, or, I wonder if they'll start Pelfrey on Sunday and have Johan start the home opener on seven days' rest.

JD,

Sorry to hear you time was wasted. However, I don't thinking either team is going to regret holding out for the DH on May 30. Alou may even be back by then but the way Pagan is playing I don't think they would rush him. Pedro should hopefully have a good change to make it back by then as well but we also question how much gas is in his tank....Either way, I don't think it is a lose-lose situation.

So I assume tomorrow it will be Maine/Hudson and Pelfrey Glavine in the nightcap?

Or will they bump Pelfrey now?
