Mostly waiting for MRI results. Pedro Martinez’s left hammy is being looked at today in NY.
When I hear, you’ll know.
When you come down to it, that’s the news of the day. Injuries always seem worse than the team let’s on, so I have to be thinking DL.
Oh yeah, Oliver Perez is pitching.
Heads: Good game.
Tails: Bad game.

I guess considering Pedro was essentially our #3 starter, I guess it could be worse. Plus, he was projected for 150 innings anyway – we knew a DL stint or 3 was inevitable…Personally, I would have liked him to make a bigger dent in his projected innings before going down.
This is why I wasn’t going gaga over this season learning from last year that the Mets have too many old players that they depend on. Alou, El Duke, Pedro, Delgado. After watching Delgado the first two games hasn’t changed my mind that he is shot. I have no idea what the odd makers were thinking in Las Vegas when they made the Mets the favorites to make it to the world series. The Mets are the second oldest team in baseball. It’s probably going to be another long season until we can get younger in the starting pitching and closer and in the field, left field and first base. My prediction is the braves will win the division and the wild card will come out of the west.
I really felt bad for Pedro last night, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, I think this loss more damaging on the psychological side. Having said that, it’s time for Pelfrey to step up. I don’t know if Maine and he are close or not but I would encourage Pelfrey to talk to Maine more. Maine got over the hump and look what he’s turning into. Pelfrey needs to get his head straight, I want him to get mad and angry. He looked too down on the mound at times. Btw, please go with the 4-man rotation Willie, we can’t have Pedro’s replacement pitch the home opener.
good game.
If there is a solid organization from top to bottom, the team can survive the injuries. So what’s there, those who say I’ve been too hard on Minaya?
I think Ollie will pitch a good game tonight…
Tomg: Yes, the Mets are old. But then you say the Braves will win the division, which seems ridiculous to me. They have a lot of old and injury prone players, Chipper Jones, Mark Kotsay, and 3/5 of their rotation. I don’t see them being immune to injury… Do all these injuries suck? Absolutely. Is it reasonable to say we’re not making the playoffs after 2 games into the season? NO!
Regarding the aging of the Mets, this IMO is a big problem. I know 2008 season just started and I should worry about the present, but think about 2009 for just a moment….NO Delgado, NO Alou, NO Pedro, and NO Perez. So now in 1 offseason, the Mets need to replace their 1B, LF, #2 starter, and their #4 starter. So in 2009, moving into a new stadium, the Mets have 3 starters (Santana, Maine, Pelfrey), NO 1B and NO LF….that’s a lot of F.A. signings and/or trades…and correct me if i’m wrong but we have NO help coming in the minors for those positions….we are screwed!
Josh,
the mets not making the playoff and the braves winning the division was my thought process before the season started. It has nothing to do with pedro getting hurt last night and the mets losing the game. I hope i am wrong but if met fans didn’t learn anything from last year than there not paying attention.
The mets have too many old players in important spots that they are depending on with no backup plans.
tomg, you mean how the Braves are depending on Smoltz, Glavine, and Chipper?
While I ultimately agree with you that the Braves will make plenty of noise this season, I think a lot of times fans overblow their own flaws and take a more optimistic view of other teams.
Oh, and Chili, the minors are not as barren as the media will have you think. Most of our good prospects were in the low minors last year. The hope is that they will take a step forward this season, with an eye towards 09/10.
FMart, Niese, Parnell, Rustich, Vinyward, plus a promising group of international signings provide a reason for optimism.
Here is one for sloppy,
Brian Bannister for who?
By the way Bannister is pitching a shutout against arguably the best offensive team in baseball today in Detroit. I loved Bannister when he came up and remember telling my brother in law that the mets have a good young pitcher here and what does Omar do, trades him for garbage.
Although I think calling Burgos garbage is a bit unfair since he did get injured (no way to predict that), Minaya seriously underestimated the value of cheap young pitching.
I mean, the A’s are holding teams up for Joe Blanton. Lily, Meche, and Silva have all gotten huge deals the past 2 seasons.
This has always been my argument as to why Heilman should have been used as a starter first, then put back in the pen if he failed.
Not only is the transition from SP to BP a whole lot easier, but you can get any clown with a live arm and a decent secondary pitch to succeed in the bullpen. Starting pitching is very hard to come by.
Here is one for sloppy,
Brian Bannister for who?
Why is it for me??? Burgos was young and threw fast. Minaya is always looking for the 99 mph fast ball… Julio, Wagner, Burgos…..
I liked Bannister also as a good back of the rotation guy, but I saw the idea in Burgos. Burgos comes back next year and learns a breaking pitch he can be awesome. I don’t have a problem with this trade even tho it hasn’t worked out yet. Bannister wasn’t a top notch kid being traded for avg talent. You guys think I’m against everything Minaya does; I’m not….
This is two posts in a row that I defended OMAR MINAYA….
gads…. he’s my pied piper now….......
