Pedro Martinez was just placed on the DL and Nelson Figueroa brought up from Triple-A New Orleans. Manager Willie Randolph said hamstrings plus pitchers usually equal the disabled list and he was right.
I’m aware of Claudio Vargas’ name. So are the Mets. First things first, Nelson Figueroa is coming up. Randolph also likes Jorge Sosa to stay in the pen. Oliver Perez starts tonight and the current plan is give him the ball for the Shea opener. Makes sense because he’ll have five full days of rest.
Personally, I think the Mets should look at this with the thought they won’t get Martinez back. Yup, that’s negative thinking and I admit it up front. Yes, it’s a hamstring, but the truth is everything about him in terms of starts and innings is wishful thinking.
Their priority should be to protect themselves. Quick question for all you Mike Pelfrey haters. How do you think you would you feel if the Mets added him in the package for Santana?
