Pedro Martinez was just placed on the DL and Nelson Figueroa brought up from Triple-A New Orleans. Manager Willie Randolph said hamstrings plus pitchers usually equal the disabled list and he was right.
I’m aware of Claudio Vargas’ name. So are the Mets. First things first, Nelson Figueroa is coming up. Randolph also likes Jorge Sosa to stay in the pen. Oliver Perez starts tonight and the current plan is give him the ball for the Shea opener. Makes sense because he’ll have five full days of rest.
Personally, I think the Mets should look at this with the thought they won’t get Martinez back. Yup, that’s negative thinking and I admit it up front. Yes, it’s a hamstring, but the truth is everything about him in terms of starts and innings is wishful thinking.
Their priority should be to protect themselves. Quick question for all you Mike Pelfrey haters. How do you think you would you feel if the Mets added him in the package for Santana?

Keith: I wouldn’t exactly expect Schneider to keep it up for the year. Even Kelvin Chapman hit over .400 for a month. lol. As far as Church’s defense, well that’s another story. I would expect it to continue. As far as him hitting off lefties, last year was the only year he was poor. Otherwise, he was fine. Only time will tell.
Kelvin Chapman never hit .400 for a month and neither will Schneider.. Kelvin did hit .400 in his first major league game…..
I was basically kidding Ghost. Geez. How about even Rey Ordonez hit .350 in a month? Would that make it better?
Steve: I agree with you on all counts. However, once upon a time Schneider was an ok hitter… maybe HoJo has helped him out. But again, not expecting Victor Martinez or anything like that… just a useful #8 guy who gets on base.
Keith: Schneider tweaked his hitting stance based on suggestions from Beltran. It’s in an article on the Mets website. Who knows if this will help in the long run. But so far, so good.
Oh, the little metises and the nonmetsie are all so happy you won less than all the games from a minor league team. good job…... well when you play real teams like we did and you are undefeated then you will have something to chirp about. meanwhile the metsies have 60 losses coming just from your 4-5 starters this year. big figeroa and big pelf the boy who is afraid on the mound….. your top 3 better be perfect little metsies because if you’re banking on schneider to boost your offense you guys all know as little as that nonmetsie jk knows…
little metsies getting the daily news and looking at the standings and you see paul loduca and lastings milledge looking down at the lowly metsies….. the nymetsies the # 3 team in nyc forever…. even your owner wants the brooklyn dodgers back…...
JK, thanks for passing that on. You know, Schhneider was stuck in that awful organization for so long, perhaps he needed a change of scenery. Church himself said that HoJo is his first real hitting coach since coming to the bigs. It must be a breathe of fresh air for these guys to get some coach coaching while playing alongside hitters like Wright, Beltran, and Delgado (although he has slipped, he still has a lot of knowledge to impart.)
Hello from DC: They let you out?
Keith: Yeah, big market teams do have that advantage where there usually are better coaches and more solid established veterans to learn from (unlike the poor poor Nationals!). Ollie said as much in the papers today—how he can learn so much from Santana and Pedro. I don’t think Ollie would have turned it around so fast had he stayed with the Pirates. BTW, Pagan also credits HoJo for helping him a lot this spring.
I found this blog really informative. thanks terribly much!
