Mets Chat Room

Welcome to Mets Chat Room. Tonight we have Pedro Martinez making his first start of the year. Willie Randolph said prior to the game that the kid gloves are off and there are no restrictions. We’ll see. Martinez is a very important part of this team, and regardless of what Randolph says now, they won’t push him.
Of course, all topics are welcome here. Let it fly.

What did you think of Castillo not running hard in the 1st inning yesterday?
You learn in little league to just break and run hard when there are two outs. I expected more from Castillo.
Wright just missed that pitch. Beltran finally looks healthy and I expect a huge year from him.
Joe D. He was initially held up by the third base coach, which made it hard to turn it on again. I mentioned it at the time, but was told in the clubhouse he had been held. So, I can’t fault him. And, I have not forgotten, I will take care of that for you.-JD
I have this vague remembrance Hanley Ramirez was particularly chatty in the final series of the year at Shea.-JD
damn, so far, so NOT good
Pedro’s pitches are all over the place, except for that dead red fast ball to Uggla.
Schneider and Pedro are not on the same page at all. Not sure if that is because Pedro is fishing to find his feel, but wow he could use Castro right now.
Willingham is so underrated. He’s the type of guy I hoped the Mets would have gotten in the offseason. His righthanded bat would have been a nice fit.
To BH: Why do you think Castro would make a difference now?-JD
I agree BH, hopefully they get in sync after the first inning. Schneider did a fantastic job yesterday.
I was big critic of the trade that brought us Schneider and Church, but now I’m starting to see some of the wisdom behind it.
I love the way Gary keeps reminding us of former Mets having big games.
John, do you think Alou will be back before may as he intimated?
JD, Castro probably wouldn’t have helped with the HR, but Pedro is always better when he works quickly and he spent a ton of time between pitches shaking off Shneider. The faster they get in sync the better for us…I think.
Wow, nice hustle and good heads up play by Pagan!
lol, Pedro looked determined up there. At least we got the pitchers spot out of the way.
My biggest concern this season is Delgado more than the number five spot in the rotation. I cant believe how barren we are at the position in the minors.
To Joe: These hernias take a long time. I’m thinking he’ll be back in early May.
To BH: He’ll get it together with Schneider.-JD
Watching Pedro Martinez at bat makes me wonder who is the best
hitting pitcher in Mets history. I suppose Mike Hampton, one season only. Dennis Cook was pretty good but only had one at bat..I think Leyland actually used him as a pinch hitter a few times in Florida. Warren Spahn was up there in career home runs but wasn’t a great average. Gooden had something like 8 HRs and a .194 average. With many teams carrying 12 pitchers I always wonder if you could ever get a pitcher used as a pinch hitter.. a Tommy Byrne, Don Drysdale or Red Lucas.
I may be wrong, but I seem to remember Darling being a good hitter too.
game over
yep I was definitely wrong, .144 ouch
fun while it lasted…game over
fun while it last game over
game overs
Jack: May I remind you the other team is the Florida Marlins.-JD
glad they came to play tonight…they stink
I think a lot of the late 1980s Mets pitchers liked to hit I think Sid Fernandez was probably the second best
Another guy who could be considered is late 1970s reliever Skip Lockwood. I think Charley Finley signed him originally as an infielder before the amateur draft, was converted to a pitcher. The same could be said about the infamous Victor Zambrano although he may not have hit much with Tampa and with his limited appearances as a Met.
Pedro has no control. This is not the catchers problem. He needs to work it out.
As for hitting pitchers, Jake Peavy yesterday hit pretty well.
As I remember Sid, he could hit, but he couldn’t run.
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
We interrupt this blog to tell you that Carlos Delgado just singled for his first hit of the year.-JD
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Relax, Jack.
There’s a lot of game left to play.
feels soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good
I would like ALL of you to refer to my terms of service.
Thank you.
What a difference a day makes. Santana good. Pedro bad.
Hope he didnt hurt himself.
Looks like a left hamstring just knocked Pedro Martinez out of the game. Will give you updated info as I get it.-JD
See Pedro in 2-3 months. No depth comes to haunt first week of season.
Oh No, not Pedro— I’m going to have to log off, we’ve got severe thunderstorms approaching – I’ll catch up later.
Un-be-lievable.
Looks like a strained hammy or groin, damn, he worked so hard to get healthy.
Wow, worse case scenario, do we look for outside help or go with El Duque and Pelf?
Uh OH….. wanted to beat you little metsies fair and saquare but now that you’re all sad because the Pedro is down its not fun watching you little metsies lose. oh well…. maybe you’ll still finish ahead of the fish!
Hey baby from DC, isn’t it past your bedtime?
What exactly happened to Pedro? Was it bad looking? Was he limping?
John, Are the Mets thinking about Claudio Vargas?
No word yet on the severity of the injury.-JD
fernando for matt morris make it happen omar
Jeff: He was on their radar. If he’s out for any length of time, they’ll probably send out some feelers. Don’t forget Nelson Figueroa and Jorge Sosa.-JD
Hello??? Anyone out there? Did it look bad? Was it a knee, hamstring, etc????
Big Baby: Are you nuts? They wouldn’t deal Fernando for Santana and you want them to trade him for Matt Morris?-JD
It seems he got his foot caught on the mound and grabbed his hammy.
BigBaby are you serious?
Thanks John. See you at Nats Park on the 23rd.
Pedro really winced. They took him out real quick. Probably just to wait and see. If Martinez only had the durability of a Tom Glavine or Jesse Orosco (never DL-ed guys)....
Ughh…does this mean Sosa starts the last Opener at Shea?
no. i’m not serious. i’d want at least chan ho for fernando.
Mets are calling it a strained left hamstring. Day-to-day.-JD
I knew there would be a “day to day” in the Met statement!!!!!
Pedro replacement? I would like to see Ron Darling come out of the booth and start the final Opening Day at Shea
May not keep him out long-term, but there is no way he makes his next start. This is total speculation of course, but seemingly in line with the progression of Met injuries over the last couple seasons. Ugh.
Sloppy: Of course. I have ``day-to-day,’’ programmed into one of my keys.-JD
Iknew it JD>>>> Sosa did a good job. Put him in the rotation. There’s nothing else internal or extenal that’s better and available.
o christ….schoenweiss
Sloppy: That would be my choice. Maybe he’ll get a couple of starts before Hernandez is ready.-JD
You CAN’T walk the leadoff hitter in the late innings and expect it not to bite you. C’mon, Aaron!
JD-
Did it look like he was in a lot of pain? Based on what you saw, would you say it’s serious or more of just a minor thing (of course, with Pedro, he’ll be treated with kid gloves)?
Mark: He looked in obvious pain. It seemed pretty high up there, too, which makes it difficult.-JD
I have to say… I’m pretty bummed.
Obviously we still don’t know how serious this is, but still. Sure, part of the reason I’m disappointed is the loss of Pedro, but I really feel bad for the guy. He worked so hard to get back. I hope he is able to come back and contribute.
aaron shows the golden rule:
lead-off walks aren’t great, but they’re better than lead-off doubles, triples and homers.
Great to see Aaron get his command back. Great stuff! Gotta get at least one in the 9th before facing Hanley Ramirez in the bottom half.
This shouldn’t go unsaid: But, another good job by Jorge Sosa.-JD
At first, the way it looked, I thought it was Pedro’s groin, as he grabbed at his crotch. Either way, it sucks. He had the honor of getting the call at the last Shea opener and now this.
He’s been snake bit these last couple of years. That’s all there is to it.
JD,
Do you know when Heilman is eligible for free agency? Must be coming soon, no? This idea that he will be the Mets’ next closer seems like fancy; he maintains that he wants to start and the Mets don’t see him as a starter, so I assume he will sign somewhere else.
What a horrible atbat by Church.
I support Ryan Church, but that was an AWFUL at-bat. The pitcher had thrown 14 of 17 pitches for balls (including the previous eight in a row), so what do you do on the first pitch? Swing over a breaking ball in the dirt, instead of sitting on the first hittable fastball?
Come on.
Gotta be smarter than that.
Do you remember the movie network where the anchor leans out the window and screams, ``I want you to go to the window and yell, I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.’’
At Shea, they substituted: ``Let’s go Mets.’’
They just did it here: ``Let’s go Fish.’’-JD
Horrible? Yeah, that might be applicable. He could’ve earned a lot of goodwill with a hit there.-JD
Hell of a play by Beltran. But, I’m not so sure he wasn’t safe there.-JD
Heilman is just flat-out impressive. Great to see him going after the hitters like that.
Almost raises my spirits—but not quite. Poor Pedro.
JT
Heilman looks very relaxed.
To JM: Heilman won’t be a free agent until after the 2010 season.-JD
Delgado/Church back to back is a horrible combination. They look like twins at the plate. bad twins.
JD, personally, it’s not always about the hit. For example, his at bat against the LH earlier in the game when he drew a walk was fantastic. That was a great at bat.
second time’s the charm.
they were just saying nice pitch, not too often.
JD—Please promise that tomorrow morning’s lead will include something about Pedro’s injury being the unkindest April Fools joke of all. Thanks.
a least Pedro can miss a start without disrupting the team, since they already have the 5 man rotation set up. Just skip his turn, and let the other guys stay on normal rest.
My guess? 2 months, minimum.
Tiffany … Damn, that’s good.-JD
From the Clubhouse
-Pedro Martinez will go to NY tomorrow for a MRI.
-Pitching coach Rick Peterson said it’s too soon to name a fallback plan, but it was obvious from talking with him that Martinez will miss some time.
-Jorge Sosa pitched 2 2/3 innings tonight, but said he could work tomorrow to a batter or two. Sosa could be an option, but Willie Randolph also mentioned Nelson Figueroa.
-Quote: ``We’re being tested early,’’ said reliever Billy Wagner.
-The Mets had their chances after falling behind 4-0. They left 12 runners on base.-JD
delcos, you’re enjoying every minute of this, no fun writing for a team with everything going right huh? always better when the team falters and the fans gets restless, just so happens it occurs pretty easily with Mets fans, great job huh? never run out of things to write about…
If you think I like that somebody got hurt tonight, you’re an idiot.-JD
Even I am not enjoying this. I want the lttle metsies to suiffer as a healthy overpaid unit, not an injured one that gives them excuses for their bad season.
One thing I have learned from watching baseball – the injuries are always worse than the team lets you think.
Last year the other team in NYC had too many hammy problems and made a very smart move by ridding themselves of their head trainer and going with a new guy and a new methodology. Mets should take the same approach. Far too many hammy problems in this organization the last couple seasons.
One question: Is Feliciano not on the team? I’d rather see him against a righty than Matt Wise against anybody. Two days of him was enough to know that Minaya has successfully replaced Mota with someobody worse.
Good call letsgometsgo.
Where is Keith when we need him to be GM? We need to get that Claudio Vargas today. Don’t look behind you big Pelfrey because you’re the guy now. I know pressure doesn’t do much for you but your job now is to replace Pedro Martinez for a couple months. Watch T-shirt guy if they call him up. He has nothing but guts. If you learn something from his mental outlook you’ll be much better off.
I agree with Sloppy about picking up Claudio Vargas as a number five starter and that Pelfrey has to step up and stop looking over his shoulder if he wants to make it in the big leagues. They don’t call it “The Show” for nothing. Time to rid himself of his stage fright and confidence issues.
I am curious to see if Brian Schneider will end up as a positive influence on Pelfrey, he certainly has extensive experience in working with young pitchers. So frustrating to watch a guy with potential let his head get in the way.
And boy, seems a little early to throw Wise under the bus. He left a changeup up in the zone after striking out 2 guys, didn’t Santana give up a dinger the same way yesterday?
JT
They have to sign Vargas or Jeff Weaver. Like JD said, there is no way they can predict what they’ll get from Pedro/Duque. They need a guy who can come in and give them innings. Sosa looks good coming out of the pen, he needs to stay there. Any of the guys in the minors would have been fine as 5th/spot starters, but if we need a 4th starter, I would like them to go after Vargas or Weaver.
Thanks for support on Vargas, but I stole it from Keith. Keith called for Vargas the second he was released. You know how much faith I have in Pelfrey? I have as much faith in him as I would have if they picked up Lawrence again. By the way Lawrence is free. Don’t tell Minaya…...
As for Wise, we needed to use 4 guys opening day because he sucked, and he followed up with yesterday. Santana’s HR was given up with the score 6-0. Big difference. And didn’t Wise throw the same pitch to Andino right before the HR? How many batting practice balls you gonna give a guy?
Well, if Wise keeps stinking it up, he’ll be the first one out the door when Sanchez is ready. I think he has some good stuff, but he could be this year’s Burgos/Julio/Rojas. Guys with good stuff but give up massive homers.
Vargas would fit right in… former Expo!
But seriously, I’ve always liked his stuff. He would benefit from Peterson and Shea Stadium.
Expecting Sanchez???? Almost 24 months on the DL. Any expectations are unfair to him….....
Letsgo… what are you talking about? I didn’t say I had any expectations of Sanchez at all. But you do think he’ll be back eventually, no? And when he comes back, someone has to get dropped. My point was that if sloppy is right and Wise turns into a pumpkin, then he’ll be the first one out of here when Sanchez is ready.
Everyone needs to get a grip this morning.
I’m not expecting him to ever make it back. He’s been hurt longer than Pedro and he doesn’t have the reputatiopn for having Pedro’s work ethic. If he makes it back great but …..
