-I think it might be overstated to say Johan Santana pitched a great game. It was very good. He was in total control, and that gives the team a sense of calmness. Too often last year Mets starters had high stress outings.
-I didn’t ask the question about Luis Castillo because it had no bearing on the outcome of the game and isn’t reflective of how he usually plays. Castillo was on base all day and put his speed to use, which was an issue concerning his knees.
-I have confidence in Jorge Sosa as a set-up reliever if the Mets wanted to go that way. And to those who are trying to build my trust in Sosa into a lack of confidence of Aaron Heilman, you’re fishing for something that isn’t there. The issue is my confidence in Sosa and nothing else.
-I am not ready to bail on Carlos Delgado, although I admit there’s concern. He did not look good yesterday.

Just got done watching the game. I don’t understand the hystrainics about Sosa pitching in the 8th inning that were posted. One would think fans would be glad to have trusted arms in the pen. The Delgado bashing year 2. Can hardly wait. For all thise who don’t like criticism of Minaya moves, how come its so easy to criticize the guy’s that Mr Perfect has brought into the team?
Santana to me looked like he was pitching to a minor league team (he was wasn’t he?). Why over extend, especially after the 6 run inning. Pedro has lived on knowing situational baseball for a long time now.
I was watching Marlin broadcast and you couldn’t tell from it nor their replays if Castillo hustled or not.
That question was kind of a reach. I was so locked in on what Santana was doing that I didn’t even notice it. But I think I can guess who asked that question based on the column about it in the Daily News. Seems like a bit of nitpicking to me.
Sloppy,
I knew I had saved the June 18, 2007 copy of Sports Illustrated with Omar on the cover for a reason. There is an excellent rather lengthy cover story by Gary Smith inside about “O”. It’s worth the read.
PS – My apologies about the frozen twinkies location – you were right – it is Cincinnati. I checked with an authority.
I think Castillo could have been going full speed and still would have been thrown out by 20ft. The only guys who might have scored would be Reyes and C Gomez.
Sosa in the 8th. It was obvious that he gained some confidence being in there, so that was a good thing. But his slider does float up there sometimes. But it looked sharper yesterday. Maybe Pedro being on the team from the beining of ST has helped him. It was reported that Pedro made some comments to Sosa last yr and that he made some adjustments. At least for awhile last yr that worked.
But unless Sanchez is out for an extended time, it would seem that Sosa is headed for the long man or some mixture of long and short.
Santana does have tendency to fall in love w/Changeup. Changeups can more easily be smacked out. The more you throw, the more likely that one won’t spin down but will spin sideways over the plate. That can lead to more HRs-like last yr. Hope you are right that he did not need to exert himself and that is why he threw so many changeups.
I thought Delgado got some good cuts in. He cold have had a hit early, but hanley made a nice play. i didn’t think he looked that bad
I thought that Willie made the right move. I had no problem at all with Sosa. Even if he would have given up a homer in that situation, Mets still would have been leading. I mean I wouldn’t really trust Sosa as a go-to set up guy, but in certain situations like yesterday i’m sure he could do fine.
I’m glad people like Minaya: If everyone felt the same way this would be very boring. Everything I read indicates a good guy, I just don’t think he’s the GM so many think he is.
PS: I didn’t eat those fried twinkies. I think Delcos ate too many of them.
I see I put Annie in the name place and not in the comment place. This is the second time I did that. My new reading glasses are supposed to be ready tomorrow. I hope that helps me!!!! sorry Annie…..
Sloppy – I’ve worn glasses since I was two – I forgive you.
Delgado didn’t look too bad from what i saw. Most importantly, he needs to just stay healthy and feeling good, and playing of course, and the results will come.
Watching the game, it looked like Castillo was hustling, and then kind of stopped/started when he got near 3rd base. That is usually a sign of the 3rd base coach screwing him up. And once he hesitated like that, it was safer to hold him. I really didn’t think at the time he was dogging it.
Pedro could be huge. He seems to be in better shape then he has been for years. Be prudent, but just let him pitch like anyone else. If he feels good for the first time in 5 years, combined with his pitching IQ (and vast array of pitches), and he can just toy with the league.
Have to start calling you Wallace Matthews if you don’t watch those question, why spoil the mood?
