"keith, youre simplifying things too much. your kid sister coulda pulled that trade off? tell me how your kid sister can do that, and 28 other gms in the league DIDNT."

No, I'm not. And yes, the Santana trade was pretty simple. If the Sox and Yanks really wanted Santana, they would have had him. No way Smith turns down Hughes or Ellsbury.

So, the Twins were left with the Mets the last team standing at the altar... so they decided to walk down the aisle with them. Knowing this, Omar told the Twins to pick any players they wanted except for FMart. Don't let Minaya fool you... the reason the Twins didn't ask for Pelfrey is because he has a major league contract and makes more money than the pitchers they got in return. Why pay more money for a pitcher who is negligibly better than Humber, Mulvey, Guerra?

Further, there were only 3 teams in the race for Santana, so your comment about 28 others GMs is entirely inaccurate.

As for why I like Gotay? He can hit. I watch almost every Met game and Gotay has a sweet doubles stroke. Plus, he plays hard and is athletic. You can learn to play better defense (see David Wright). Gotay would have provided an above average bat at 2B. Even if he never learned to hit righties, he would have been a useful players as the LH part of a platoon.

Lastly, I see a lot of bitching and moaning from Mets fans about how old this team is. Well, we now have two of our young position players playing on teams in the division: Milledge and Gotay. Fantastic. And now I get to watch Tatis try to play the OF.

There are plenty of guys who developed or broke out late. Utley, Kent, Bay. Mora didn't get to the bigs until he was 27. The Yanks traded for Paul O'Neill when he was 28. What bothers me about them letting go of Gotay is that he was a former top prospect who looked like he was finally starting to put it together. The fact that the Braves took him tells you something, they're good at evaluating young talent.

As for the Braves already having Kelly Johnson, who someone called better than Gotay. First, Johnson had something Gotay never has had... a chance to play a full season in the bigs. I'm not trying to say Gotay would be better than Johnson, just that we don't know because Gotay has never been given a shot to play a full season, Johnson has. Second, the Braves are a smart franchise. They know it's more important to have good players on your roster instead of filling out these preconceived roles on your roster checklist.

Finally, for those who claim Gotay will never be more than a 25th man... did you watch him play last year?

Too bad Pelfrey wasn't in the Santana deal instead of Humber or Guerra.

Speaking of Gotay, I predict Braves will enjoy him just as much as they enjoyed Franco last year. Those pathetic weasels would pick up my grandmother if she was dumped from the Mets.

"yea, easley was terrible last year. and fuck him for being able to play every infield position and corner OF. what a dick."

We can do better if we invested in true infielders and outfielders.
We're the only team that stacks a bench with over the hill utility guys.
I'm glad you agree big baby.

At the end of the day Gotay was a nice role player for us and helped us through a difficult time last year at 2b.

He is young and has promise even if the org does not believe his D is good enuf.

No one likes to get fired which is what happened to him. I hope things work out for him in ATL.

If he went to the White Sox or Astros no one here would care. But because he goes the Braves, there is widespread panic over a guy who will be nothing more than a 25th man on the roster for his career. Not that a guy like that isn't needed mind you, but it doesn't make or break a team.

That may be true, but Tatis has a lovely 0-4 line today. How can anyone expect this team to start strong out of the gate if we're waiting around for Alou to return in order to get rid of dead weight?

Lets look a little further down the road. Once Alou comes back we can dump Tatis without shedding a tear and Pagan will get to stay on the roster.

I'm disappointed in Gotay being waived but I'm more upset
about the organization's inclination to pile up "VERSATILE" players.
Easley, Marlon, and Tatis all have their best years behind them.
I much prefer 1 young OUTFIELDER and 1 young INFIELDER on the bench
with something to prove than a bunch of washed up UTILITY players.
Marlon Anderson is the only worth while one of the bunch
cuz he can pinch hit like nobody's biz.

Easy there cupcake. I'm not saying that Omar hasn't done a good amount of great things for the Mets since he arrived here Jason. Letting Gotay and Register go? Those both do not qualify. Yes adding Santana was a huge coup, but having a shaky #5 pitcher losing games pretty much negates any win he gets. And don't give me the fair weather fan garbage, I've been a Mets fan for a whole helluva long time, cupcake. Pardon me for expressing discontent with a poor decision by Omar.

if gotay has such a great bat, why was he hitting .240-.250 for his entire minor league career?

he had a hot streak. he was a good guy. such is life.

O no! The Braves just picked up a 26 year old career minor leaguer, who can't hit lefties, can't hit coming off the bench, and can't play defense, but who had ONE good stretch in the majors!

Braves NL EAST CHAMPS!

Why the Braves who have Kelly Johnson who is better than Gotay and hits lefthanded, would even want Gotay makes no sense.
Just remember if they try to send him to the minors the Braves I believe will have to put him back on waivers.
